GIANT insect fair this weekend!!!!

Saturday May 16th and Sunday May 17th the Los Angeles Natural History Museum is throwing their annual bug fair.  It's North America's largest and I can't help but spam it every year because it's AMAZING!!!!!

They have so much insect stuff to see, touch, buy, and EAT!  Yeah.... I know!  Like I said last year, "Whether you want to eat a barbecued cricket, see a 10" bird-eating tarantula, buy a collectors case full of preserved butterflies, pet the softest silk worms, bring in some creepy crawly you found at home for official identification, see a preying mantis egg case hatch, taste some fresh honey in 12 odd flavors, or just nerd-watch old men with magnifying loops searching for rare fruit fly specimens, this fair is BEST!

It's in the two main halls of the museum, and with the $9 to get in, you can see the whole museum (the rocks and minerals exhibit can't be beat but most like the enormous amount of taxidermy this museum has) or just camp out in front of the enclosed beehive and try to find the queen bee from 9:30-5"

I'm usually there both days and I hope to meet a few of you there!

See you there?!?!

This Sunday, September 21st, the Los Angeles Natural History Museum is opening their yearly Spider Pavilion!

http://www.nhm.org/exhibitions/spiders/

Basically, it's a GIANT tent you get to walk through where orb-weaver and other harmless garden spiders are living, eating, and making their impressive webs. Plus there are other (caged) species of spider that are a little more on the creepy side!

This year I am especially excited because all of the spiders in the open air exhibit I personally helped collect with my favorite bug guy, Brent Karner! There are going to be some MASSIVE spiders to see! If you're braver than me, you could even hold one!

I have lots of pictures and video of our spider hunt that I will post here in this blog next week sometime, but I hope to see some of you at the public opening this Sunday! 10-5 (I'll probably show up late afternoon though).

This Saturday and Sunday is North America's largest bug fair right here in LA at the Natural History Museum.

Whether you want to eat a barbecued cricket, see a 10" bird-eating tarantula, buy a collectors case full of preserved butterflies, pet the softest silk worms, bring in some creepy crawly you found at home for official identification, see a preying mantis egg case hatch, taste some fresh honey in 12 odd flavors, or just nerd-watch old men with magnifying loops searching for rare fruit fly specimens, this fair is BEST!

I'll give you the website and you can get all the info, but I'll be there both days, grinning from antenna to thorax.

Alright... Most of you know I have quite a zoo over at my place, though nothing you can ever play with -- mostly black widows, venomous tarantulas, fishies with attitude problems, and a handful of iron clad beetles that are pretty much a garbage disposal for my table scraps.

Last week I rescued two baby guinea pigs for a friend that rescued two pregnant mom pigs. They are really very cute and make all kinds of noises (I'll attach pics and video) and are pretty funny but furry, interactive pets that require tons of fresh food are taking some getting used to compared to critters that live in a jar and eat once a month!!!

Though none of my "pets" have names, I feel that because these are "normal" pets, they should have names and I'm TOTALLY at a loss as to what to name them. Most pet names I see online are unimaginative (Fluffy, Blackie, Patches) or too matchy (Salt and Pepper, Fred and Wilma, Yin and Yang) -- you get the idea.

Here's the scoop on these two -- The smaller black one is a girl. She's really docile, scared, delicate, quiet, and always more content with her head buried in a pocket or just crawling down your shirt to hide. The other one is the black one's brother. He's a brave explorer type that doesn't jump at each noise. He eats more, talks/squeaks/coos more, can be lured out of his pigloo with treats, and is quite curious. When it comes time to pick them up, she runs from me and he usually just stands there and accepts fate.

PLEASE post any name ideas here!?!?

Now here they are:

Okey doke!!! There's a few things coming up this month that I want to invite y'all to so get out your calendar and pencil me in...

This Saturday, May 12th, is the annual LAPD Rampart Station Open House / Street Fair. It's at the police station at 2710 West Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90026 Front Desk:(213)485-4061 and scheduled to be from about 11am-2pm. They'll have a ton of free food, entertainment, informational booths, plus you can meet my favorite Rampart officers AND get a tour of the station (which is cool)!! I'll be volunteering there ALL day, sweating and smiling. You can't miss me and my RED hair.

Next Saturday AND Sunday, May 19th and 20th is the Los Angeles Natural History Museum's annual INSECT FAIR!!!!! You know I go buggy for this thing every year and it's the largest in North America! They'll have preserved and live bugs including: spiders, butterflies, beetles, scorpions, stick bugs, mantids, and all kinds of creepy crawly excitement you can hold or take home! Everything's bug related - books, artwork, equipment, T-shirts, toys, etc. Plus, they always have a plexiglass encased bee hive, strange kinds of honey to taste and buy, a booth to bring any of your household spiders to for classification and collection (aka the Spider Survey), a giant outdoor tent you can go in with lots of butterflies inside, and a cooking demonstration using some kind of foul insect you can gobble up if you're a freak. Regular museum entrance fee includes the entire museum, but it's a busy weekend for them, so pack your patience and some comfortable shoes.

Then the following weekend is the Star Wars Convention!!!! It's a four day thing I think, but we'll be there Saturday. It's too late to get your tickets online, but you can buy them the Wednesday before at the LA Convention Center with the rest of the procratinat-nerds. Me and the geek gang are still pondering the possibilities of dressing up for this, but until one of us commits to my fantasy Jar Jar Binks costume with a "Kick Me" sign on the back, I'm probably going "normal."

Lastly, I added 10 NEW Modeling Galleries to my website but you can see some teasers in my MySpace folder titled "New Crap." ANYONE WHO POSTS A COMMENT TO ONE OF THESE NEW PHOTOS, GETS AN OUTTAKE PHOTO OF ONE OF THE SHOOTS SENT TO THEIR INBOX!!!

See you soon?

All the pics from the birthday parade will end up on here next weekish (and if you have some, send them to me!), but here's the up-to-the-minute update:

This Saturday (Aug 12th) is my fourth and final birthday party before I collapse with my eyes rolled back into my frosting-covered face.

for the whole story...

Basically, it was a high-contrast birthday for a couple of us birthday girls (Remy, Maggie, and ME) -- with the last streamer falling during this sweltering Saturday on the hot and dirty beach in Venice! Come wade in the raw sewage with me!?

Thanks for giving a crap -- and check out the web page I made for it. It's got more details, maps, a beach gear checklist, and all kinds of festive crap I got off on Google image search just to get a chuckle out of someone, dammit!! ; )

RSVP or just SHOW UP!!!!!!!!!

This birthday makes me SO old, I need TWO parties, and YOU'RE invited to BOTH!!!

For all the general birthday spam, click on the ret hot invite, but here's the non-html basics...

PART ONE --- Sunday, August 6th is my actual 32nd birthday. That night from 10-2 I'm hostessing a night of dancing, drinks, and cupcakes at a cool and creepy club, Malediction Society. Now this isn't my event, but they are generously letting us crash it and the attached "MaledictionPass.jpg" WILL GET YOU IN FOR FREE if you print out one per person and give it to the cashier B4 10:30

(Malediction Society is @ 3100 Wilshire Blvd, LA - 2 blks east of Vermont - enter in back - lots of free street parking - and at http://www.maledictionsociety.com/ for more general club info, past photos, directions, etc. )

PART TWO --- Saturday, August 12th 2-7pm is where things heat up -- at a giant BEACH PARTY!!!

By that Saturday, I should be used to being 32 and relaxed enough to soak up the sun and eat worthless calories with you! We'll be right on Venice Beach @ the breakwater. The nearest inland address is 1400 Ocean Park between Market St & Windward Ave, by the graffiti towers, skate park, & just 1/2 a psuedo "block" north of Muscle Beach. There are TONS of places to park, eat, shop for crap, take a crap, and even shower if you really want to impress me...

Beach gear checklist, Venice Beach map, and link to MySpace invitation (if you're a MySpace geek like me and want to RSVP through there) also at http://www.MollyBrenner.com/birthday.htm or HERE!

No presents, kiddies! I'd really just be happy to SEE you!

Well, I thought my adventure with Elyse last Tuesday deserved special mention and LOTS of gorey photos!

Here's Elyse and I on a good day:

and here's a pic of us in the ER last week:

The amazing thing is that she's still smiling in the ER!

Now, here's the story (and I'm getting to the gorey pictures, you damn ambulance chasers!):
Elyse and I take a quick walk about 10 houses down from her house to see some place that's for sale. Her husband told her to let me climb the gate because I had pants and good shoes on while she was wearing a floaty skirt and flip flops (this will be important in a minute).I wasn't sure what house we were going to until Elyse started climbing the gate -- one of those 6 foot spiked iron gates with brick pillars every so often.

Basically, she gets up to the top, falls back just enough to get her balance while impaling the back of her calf on one of the spikes and is standing with one leg on the pillar and one half on the spike but weight supported on the pillar.Got it?Here's a wideshot so you can see what I mean:

Now, here's the whole "this all went really fast, but it was in slow motion" part. She knew she hurt her leg, but at that point she thought she just banged it really good and somehow caught her skirt or shoe on the gate because she couldn't move her leg but couldn't see it because of her full skirt."Oh. Oh!" she said kinda surprised, but not at all as surprised as I was staring at what was happening eye level and about a foot away from me.

I guess my first thought was just "get her down and then we'll think about this" so I yelled at her "Get down here right now!!!"She said, "I can't" and then (this is the worst part) slid her leg up and down on the spike about 4 inches, not knowing how high to lift herself to get free (about 5 inches).Watching and hearing the spike squish up and down Elyse's leg was... bad.I panicked and screamed, "Lift your leg all the way -- GET DOWN HERE!!!"

She got off the spike and the blood started to drip instantly, but just a trickle, not a shooting surge or anything. She steadied herself on the pillar and lifted her skirt to inspect her leg. That's when her face turned from comedic folly to shock and horror."What do I do?"She practically whispered it out of her totally white face."Jump!"I yelled, and she did.

There was a bit of a splatter as she landed.I sat her down instantly and grabbed her by the hand so she could cut off the blood supply below the knee and I could get the car.I think I told her she was going to be fine, but all I remember next is running.I ran faster than I've ever run in my life and thought it still wouldn't be fast enough for poor Elyse sitting there on someone's steps waiting for someone to rescue her.

I sent her husband Michael over, got some paper towels for the car ride, and drove back to the gate, and as I pulled up, she was lying down, the neighbor had come out with her first aid kit, and Michael was cutting off the blood to her leg.I told her it wasn't bleeding that much, she was going to be fine, but she'll need stitches, and I knew she was freaked out, but we were going to take care of everything and she'd be back to normal soon.I didn't mention that her blood was getting soupy all over the sidewalk, her leg looked like shit, and there were fat globules ripped out of her leg and on the fence, her leg, and puddling in her shoe.

While I was talking to her she asked me, "Is Molly coming back?" so I just stopped mid-sentence and called the ambulance.I knew I couldn't drive to the hospital and hold off her leg if she passed out en route and she looked like she was losing consciousness. The sirens came immediately.Everyone wanted to know the same questions -- how did it happen, who is she, when?

I rode with her in the ambulance. They kept her talking about all kinds of things like the neighborhood and schooling, but her blood pressure was dipping below 80 and she was in danger of passing out.She refused pain medication then and really took the ride there like a champ. Once there, she was wheeled into her room and everyone crowded around to figure out what to do next. She got an IV and they took a quick medical history. The pain started in.

Elyse is like me - never takes so much as an aspirin for a headache.I guess the thought is that your head is hurting for a reason, so instead of numbing the pain, maybe you need a drink of water or to step away from the computer screen.Fix it, don't mask it.But in this case, she couldn't fix it, only the doctors could and they can get in there better if she's not squirming, squealing, or screaming.I talked her into the morphine.

She was GONE.I hope the audio plays on this dumb photobucket video:

Here's another closeup of the gash, though all you see is the entry point and not the fact that that "canal" goes in about 5 inches, almost out the back of her calf (which she sure discovered the next day as the bruise went up behind her knee!)

They irrigated the leg with saline and Betadyne in a big ol' official turkey baster kind of thing, ran a portable X-ray machine over it (just in case), and gave her 3 really deep stitches under the exposed fat to put the muscle together, trimmed the skin flap (gross!), and gave her another 7 skin sutures over the deep stitches. One big ass bandaid (and bill) later, we were wheeling her out of the hospital and onto more important things -- like getting burritos!!!

She's in a lot of pain now. It's hard to walk or flex her foot because it pulls on the stitches and stretches the torn muscle! Please send Elyse a get well message!!!

We simply couldn't get it all to the last one, so... a handful of us are converging one final time to offer you untold treasures (and a bunch of cheap crap) for our sweltering sidewalk sale!!! Vintage furniture, clothes, costumes, housewares...

Sunday, 8am 'til we hit heatstroke.

In the bank parking lot at the corner of Silverlake Blvd and Glendale Blvd, or 2420 Glendale Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90039 if you're mapping it.

Also, if you have stuff to sell, bring it down and make some money with us! One girl made over $500 last time with her garage goods. And some guy sold stuff his old roommate left behind and was VERY happy to clean house for cash. There is a TON of space and parking here and the bigger we are, the more people stop, so don't be shy!

For the first time in a thousand years, I'm pushing back this cobwebbed computer chair and heading out of town for a little adventure!

Tonight (after the usual stop at the cheesy gay bar) it's over to Remy's because we will be scouting the location of our first summer beach party!!! Being sheltered under the proverbial gothic parasol for many years, leads me to this -- HELP!?!?! Where's a good beach that has parking, a snack stand, and plenty of space on a Saturday for all us kiddies to stretch out and have some fun?

Tomorrow is for packing, helping Michael Michael Motorcycle get out his poster subscriptions, then some show in Glendale, then off to my gal pal Sarah's and the rest off the weekend Sarah and I will be in the desert at the motorcycle races!!! I can smell the sunblock and nacho sauce already!!!

Other than that, the Shannen Doherty show went OK, but there wasn't too much TV drama to report (other than the girl that got set up totally read her dumb ass roommate).

And in MySpace news... I have 11 new Myspace pictures, do you even care? Hahaha... Also, I changed my front page a bit for now. Then, I'm allowing mail again on this thing for the time being. We'll see if it gets as overwhelming as before. I may just accept the 500plus friend requests and then use my MySpace gestapo tactics on dumb mail and accepting giant comments from these people I don't know well -- unless the comment is a photo of my name spraypainted on the space shuttle or something... How does anyone have a job and MySpace at the same time?

For TONIGHT ONLY, I'll be slinging green over at the freshly re-opened Dungeon tonight, so make your way over to Hollywood Blvd and take advantage of me (well, my free pass* that is) and shake your shit to Goth, Electro, Dark 80's, Industrial, and Alternative.

You know the usual -- 10-2 / 18UP / full bar / sexy go-go dancers / 3 rooms / tons of parking / only in the theme of perverts and torturers. In case you want to join in their debauchery, wear clean undies (and don't speak to me).

The only raping I'll be doing tonight is on your wallets, but print this bulletin as a *F*R*E*E* *P*A*S*S* to parade past me unscathed -- you can even give me the finger if you need to -- I couldn't give a crap.

*NOT SO FINE PRINT -- 1 printout per person (duh) and GOOD BEFORE 10PM, good as a $5 pass between 10-10:30, and good for $10 all night if you leave it in your car or run out of printer ink or any of the dozen dumbass excuses that refuse to impress me... ever.
