I first met Kristen at Jabberjaw in L.A. We talked for hours in the TV room. Then all of a sudden she got up and walked away. I didn't know what to think. Well, the reason she left our conversation was to play. I had no idea she was in the band at all until that moment. That was about '92 or '93. I'm not too sure. She was fun to hang out with. She would call when she was in town playing or not. Shows at Bogart's in Long Beach, the Whiskey in Hollywood. Good times!
So, whoever this is, thank you for bringing back some fond memories.

A mini biography of Kristen Pfaff By: Lynda (with permission of Ms. Janet Pfaff)................................................................................................................ Kristen Marie was born May 26, 1967 to Janet and her first husband in Williamston, NY. Her parents divorced when she was young, and Janet remarried Norman Pfaff, who quickly adopted Kristen, giving her his surname. In January of 1976, Janet and Norman had a child of their own-Jason. Norman and Janet eventually divorced, but both children kept the last name Pfaff. Janet never remarried, but Norman did many years later. Kristen went through Catholic schooling at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart. Even as a child, Kristen was "bright, self-motivated and very independent", recalls her mother. She was very family and friend-oriented, a feature that she would maintain into adulthood, and would ultimately take with her to an unworthy grave. She was a Brownie and later became a Girlscout, and while other little girls were playing with dolls, Kristen preferred a tape recorder, which she would use to record Girlscout songs, but would make up her own lyrics. Her tape recorder days were only part of the building blocks that would form the basis of her later musical career. She also studied classical piano and played cello. Graduation from the Sacred Heart Academy would arrive in 1985, when she would leave the school behind with a scholarship to Boston College. Kristen would study at Boston College for only a short time before receiving a scholarship that would take her to study in Holland. When she returned home, Kristen took a year off from school and worked in a Buffalo hospital as a computer programmer, but decided it was not a job for which she really cared. She then decided to attend the University of Minnesota. It was at the U. of Minn. that she became most active in the humanities department. She majored in Women's Studies, but was also fond of, and good in, the field of English/Writing. (Kristen was always a good writer. She had pieces published in school chronicles at both the Sacred Academy and the U. of Minn.). It was during her years at the University that Kristen marched on the White House, became active in getting extra campus security, and even counseled rape victims. She was definitely very much an activist. Some of the most noble stories come from her years at Minnesota. Kristen was part of RSVP (Restore of the Sexual Violence Program) which offered a crisis line, counseling services, and training in self-defense programs. The SVP was begun in 1985 by University officials under the pressure of the students due to the abundance of campus rapes. When cuts in funding for the program were initiated, the RSVP came into action. After being ignored, and after realising that the administrators continued to be in denial about the sexual violence the campus was undergoing, the RSVP staged a "raid" (a "sit in") in dean Hasselmo's office in February 1989. (Kristen was designated as the RSVP contact person by Hasselmo in 1990.) Kristen also took part in the annual "24 hour rape free zone", which in 1990 took place in Coffman Memorial Union Plaza. Kristen was quoted in the Minnesota Daily as saying the goal was "to draw attention to violence brought against women on campus and in the world." As only one of a few results of the combined efforts of the RSVP and other humanities departments, there is extra lighting and extra security on the Minnesota campus. Kristen left college before she graduated. She felt she still had too many credits to gain, so she graduated herself. But one can seriously doubt that while thinking about and admirably fighting for women's rights, Kristen would have foreseen that roughly three years later she would be playing bass in a relatively well-accepted rock band. In 1993, Kristen Pfaff, one-third of the band Janitor Joe, would release her first major album on the Amphetamine Reptile record label. "Big Metal Birds", as the album is called, signified her aggression into the rock field. The band gained an ample following, and the album received honorable reviews. *On a personal note-to me, one has not truly heard Kristen's talent in all it's glory if they haven't heard "Big Metal Birds". Not only was her playing remarkably more perceptible, but she also participated in an immense amount of the writing of the album. She even took solo credit for writing the most excellent "Limited Edition", a song which would later "donate" a part to a Hole song. ("Limited Edition"-"You've made your bed you'll lie in it, You've made your bed you'll cry in it...". Sound familiar, all you Hole fans?) With that in mind, keep this as motivation to go out and find the album. You can find it in most record stores. If not, most record stores can order it. Remember, "Big Metal Birds" by Janitor Joe.* On a more definite note, one can doubt that Kristen would have dreamed she would be in a band with Kurt Cobain's wife. The story of how Kristen was asked to join Hole has never been clarified to me. Whether Eric Erlandson (Hole's guitarist) and Courtney Love, or just Eric, or just Courtney, approached Kristen that night in 1993 at a Janitor Joe gig is unknown to me. At any rate, she was asked to join Hole and she was originally reluctant. At the time, although Hole was just recently signed to a much larger label-Geffen Records-and they had previously outsold Nirvana's "Bleach" with their debut "Pretty on the Inside", Kristen knew she had a good thing going with Janitor Joe. Eventually, she agreed to join as a temporary bassist. After the completion of her only album with Hole "Live Through This", which was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, she decided to stay on as a permanent member, a decision that was not only hard to reach, but was supported by all. Kristen moved to Seattle, WA so she could be closer to the band, as this was their residing place. She enjoyed a few months of joy with Hole. In 1993, she would go to Europe with Hole to play in the popular Phoenix Festival. They would play a few other gigs in Europe, some of which would be documented in bootleg videos and audio cassettes. No one (outside of Hole who aren't disclosing the info) knows when she began using heroin, nor do they know how bad or maybe how not-so-bad her use of the drug was. But Seattle has come to be known for their "cappuccino's and heroin". Kristen knew she had to get out of Seattle, and had already moved back to Minnesota (Minneapolis) in February 1994. She had began to rebuild her strength and happiness. She even temporarily rejoined Janitor Joe for a European tour while Hole awaited the release of their album "Live Through This". But all that happiness took a twist when Kurt Cobain was found dead, April 8, 1994. Kristen had highly admired Kurt as a musician and as a friend, and the effect it took on her personally was only a scrape compared to what it would do to the band as a wHole, especially with the focus being diverted to Courtney Love. It probably didn't help that "Live Though This" was released so quickly after Kurt left. In any event, Kurt's death was a tragedy for her as well as for everyone else. She told the "Minnesota Nightly" (May 10, 1994) that Kurt broke her heart. Only two months later, the Minnesota Nightly would be running another Kristen-related article, this one titled "Kristen Pfaff Broke Our Hearts". In June of 1994, Kristen had gone back to Seattle to pack up the things that she had left behind when she had moved back to Minneapolis. Her U-Haul was packed out front of her King County apartment. A friend slept in another room while she went in to take a bath. The friend awoke and realized Kristen was not out of the bathroom yet. He knocked. He could hear that she had fallen asleep in the tub-a normal thing for Kristen. He went back to sleep. The next morning, June 16, the worried friend kicked open the door only to find that Kristen had died during the night, a victim of a heroin overdose. What happened in that bathroom that night in June is Kristen's most devastating secret. Hole has gone on with their lives. But most important, her family members and friends have gone on with their lives. Most admirably has been the crusade by her mother Janet, a member of the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Ms. Pfaff has made many appearances in the NY area. She uses her tragic loss as a motivation to help people realise how important it is to stay away from drugs. She mostly speaks to young people, and sees many Hole and Nirvana fans in these crowds. Along with her, she brings her memories, her feelings, her emotions, her advice, and her desire to help persuade, help and change-quite comparable to what Kristen did her college years. She also brings literature. Maybe most hauntingly, however, is the physical achievement of Kristen's that Ms. Pfaff brings along with her. To these events, Ms. Pfaff brings her copy of the plaque of the platinum status "Live Through This". Kristen never got to see this accomplishment. There are people who die and stay dead, but Kristen is not one of them. As long as there are people who keep bringing up her name and her memory, she will live forever. That is how you keep a person alive. It's important that we learn from her mistake. And despite this mistake, it's important that we let people know that she's not just another heroin statistic; she's not just another rock star junkie. She was a person, and a beautiful one-one most of us are never going to have the honour to have even met. But all of us can have the privilege to be touched by her story. *********************************************************** THANK YOU SOOO MUCH LYNDA http://www.myspace.com/tobietyler77
