The Apathy Code

Members:

Jason Montagna-Vocals, Guitar,

Brian de Mello - Drums,

Michael Murphy - Bass (Quit 9-18-04),

Ryan Eger - Guitar, Vocals ( Quit 6/04)

and at one point Trevor Ramen played drums.

A quick side note: I can't format this interview like the others because of the in-depthness of the answers (which I would like to thank Jason for!) so I'm just gonna let him explain all of this and leave out the "From" and "Sounds like".

Give them a listen: www.purevolume.com/theapathycode

How long have you been playing together?

That question is hard to answer. The Apathy Code has gone through many different phases. I'll give you the band history.  In the summer of 2002 I started writing things with Ryan and we booked a show for August 29th as The Apathy Code.  I went away for a few weeks, when i got back i couldn't get in touch with Ryan, so I had Mike Murphy who i had been in a previous band with fill in.  Him on synth and bass. Me on guitar and vocals.  In the Fall all 3 of us started writing songs together and we got our first drummer Trevor.  Trevor quit and we didn't find a drummer until January.  In the meantime we recorded the (alternate versions) of Structure Vs. Compulsion and No Alarms in Mikes attic with acoustic instruments. de Mello joined the band in January and we recorded a demo with The Apology and  An Obstruction to Speech in March at Technical Ecstasy in New Brunswick.  Those recording ended up on Thick Red Moment.  We Played our first show at the Brighton Bar in May.  Soon after we moved to a house in New Brunswick and had shows in the Basement.  We played a lot in the next year with the same line-up.  In March Mike quit.  We decided we should record the songs we had been playing live before he left so we went back to Technical Ecstasy and recorded Thick Red Moment.  Mike decided he wanted to stay.  A few
months later Ryan quit.  We've played as a 3-piece ever since and our Cd has Just been released. Mike Has now left the band for good and the future of The Apathy Code is undetermined.  We are hoping Ryan will re-join and we can just find a new bass player.

Who would you consider to be your biggest influence?

My personal biggest influence was probably Neil Young.  He has a biography called Shakey.  That man has become my hero.

What made you want to join a band?

I think it was a combination of Pearl Jams No Code album and not really having any friends in High School that got me to really love music on a level that I hadn't before. So i started  playing music and writing songs.  I started to get into underground music and going to shows and stuff and that's when I felt I  NEEDED to be in a band.  It wasn't so much a decision as a compulsion.

How'd you learn to play an instrument?

I guess it was like summer 1995.  I had always been into music but at that time I found myself in the hospital in New Brunswick for a week undergoing major surgery.  It was explained that I would be in bed for like a month or 2 and it would be a full year before i could resume any type of physical activities.  My parents got me a guitar.  I guess i was 15.  That September I entered a new school where I knew no one.  And music really became my life.  I took some guitar lessons.  I learned a bunch of cover songs, but not really any theory. and that's how I learned to play. I've never really resumed any physical activities. haha.  I'm not really answering the questions you've asked me am I? Sorry. I'll try harder.

Who are some of the bands you've played with?

Some of my Favorites have been Fanshen, Outsmarting Simon, Bear Vs. Shark, Codeseven, Liars Academy, Boys Night Out, The Break, This band called Gods was real cool. The Grillers, The Killing Gift. and My Shining One. We've played with The Fever Few and Meghan Storm a few times and they are always awesome.  We just played with Let It Burn and this band called Bubble/Gum and both those bands were really cool. We are supposed to be playing with Del Cielo and The Scarlet Letter at their last show on October 30th. Hopefully we can get our shit together before then because I really love those bands.

Have you been in any other bands besides this one?

Yeah I did a band when I was younger, and right now I'm playing with a band called Silhouette with Jason from This Ship Will Sink and some of the guys from Is This Real and Kill Crush Destroy.  I don't know if it is going to work out with me, but what they are doing is really awesome.  So if anyone should get a chance to see that band they should go see them.

Do you have a favorite part about being in a band?

Writing songs, playing them for people. RECORDING!!! I just wish I could afford to do it more.

Do you have a least favorite part?

Driving, fighting with band members.  All the politics involved.  And the compromises.  I think that is why Neil Young is so awesome. He completely avoids that.

What plans do you have for the future?

I'm hoping we can keep The Apathy Code going for at least another LP and a tour.  I want to do an acoustic record by myself soon, and I hope I can fit into this new band. If none of that works out i will just keep writing songs if nothing else.
