BUBBLEGUM SCREW - London's premier glam punk crew

Bubblegum Screw is London's newest glam punk 'n' roll band. Formed in late 2006, they're stalwarts of the busy live music scene and have recorded an EP "St Valentines Day Massacre" with Simon Trought (Television Personalities). The disc sold out within only a few months.

Mark Thorn on vocals and bassist Zuri Z formed the band after finding a mutual love for the 1970s American punk sound, primarily artists such as New York Dolls, Dead Boys and the Ramones. Drummer Mike Fury was then brought in to provide some muscle to the group.

Rich van Kerr, formerly of New Zealand punk band The Panties and now claiming to be Dutch (the name sounds better with an accent), plays rhythm guitar and attempts backing vocals. Rock'n'roll hellraiser Tommy Atkins on lead guitar is a recent addition, allowing Mark the freedom up front to perfect his Iggy and Jagger impersonations.

So far, they've toured as far away as Latvia, Estonia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria, as well as played a host of gigs around the UK. Bubblegum Screw were officially the first British rock'n'roll band ever to play Bulgaria's second largest city Plovdiv. They've been asked if they'd be interested in appearing as the house band in a porn movie shot in Prague. Zuri's suggestion of the song 'Feel the Pain' being used for an anal scene didn't go down too well.

Bubblegum Screw's song 'Love Is Inspiration' was featured on a CD that came with the December issue of London's 'Bubblegum Slut' glam punk fanzine.

Their song 'Rock'n'Roll Loser' will be on a compilation CD 'Sons Of Guns' in the April issue of Classic Rock Magazine. Theme: bands that have the fire of early Guns N'Roses.

Gigs aplenty around the UK have been booked for the summer and interest has been widespread, including some from the management of the New York Dolls.

More information can be found on their myspace page www.myspace.com/bubblegumscrew

LIVE REVIEWS

"Putting the rock 'n' roll into punk are tonite headliners Bubblegum Screw, and the wild bunch certainly have a Ramones like sound as well as look... the songs are very riff driven, and can have a dark, urgent tone at times, but raunchy solos always arrive to glitz things up. This is one act you need to see live and even if punk is not your bag there's lashing of good rock here. Trashy, crashy punk 'n' roll that hits the spot - they're gonna kill ya."
(Neon Promotions)

"A brand of punked out rock n roll that seems to draw influence from the New York Dolls and the Ramones as much as it does from the likes of Motley Crue and LA Guns... frontman Mark launches himself around the stage like kangaroo on speed, hardly standing still for the entire set."
(Komodo Rock)

"An action packed rock'n'roll rollercoaster right from the off. The lead singer jumps around while snarling out the lyrics and can be reminiscent of Jagger and Iggy as he struts confidently around the place...  fierce chordwork, plenty of solos... drums hammer away and bass follows suit with thunderous lines... fuelled with an American punk attitude -Stooges, Ramones- with a big wide streak of rock'n'roll running through, though occassionally there's a hint of early Damned to be found... Their chaos is always controlled... just! A real powerhouse of an act, these guys deliver a brilliant live show. Band of the night: Bubblegum Screw."

EP Reviews
Just imagine that you're in their audience seeing BUBBLEGUM SCREW for the first time, I guess that you could feel a moment's hesitation, like in a dream thinking that you're actually looking at Johnny Thunders and Dee Dee Ramone rocking the stage. A brief look over the singer's shoulder is also inevitable to check out if Razzle has joined the party too… But thank God, Mark Zuri, Johnny, Rich & Mike don't live in a ghost world in which Junior LesPaul guitars start playing on with a "1, 2, 3, 4" unity shout! On the contrary, they are genuine London rockers who grew up listening to The HEARTBREAKERS, The DEAD BOYS and HANOI ROCKS. On this first try, these British cats went shopping to the glam punk sleaze counter to offer us four delicious meals that could have been cooked by the best chefs in town. They got it all despite their young age and seem to have written these catchy debut songs without any real difficulty. This "St Valentines Day Massacre" should leave some blood traces but their willing victims will turn their stereo with a smile on their faces./Franckie.

Live Reviews
Club Cavaral @ The Bowling Green, Manchester 27/10/2007
You would not believe the amount of people that looked at me with wide eyes when asked what I was doing at the weekend... "I'm off to Manchester to see Bubblegum Screw"!

It took a while to actually sink in that I was going to see a band and this was their name... I kid you not! But please, can someone remind me next time I'm waiting for a band to finish soundcheck NOT to start drinking Black Russians, followed by mass amounts of Kahlua. Yes, it definitely gets one merry, however, it does seem to leave ones head wishy-washy... so to say.

This was a weekend I'd decided to chill out in Preston, it's not often I don't have plans and it seemed like an age since I'd been to the local… and that was that! Invited to Manchester, and how could I refuse? I'd begun to wonder how busy the gig would be, Tigertailz were playing the Academy, a space of 2 minutes walk away from the Bowling Green, and having never even heard of Club Cavaral before, let alone seen advertised gigs for the place... I hoped in my heart of hearts though that the muso's of Manchester would be out in force to show their support. For me personally, I definitely made the right decision on heading to Manchester to see these guys and wouldn't have had it any other way.

But blimey-o-riley, what a multi-national gathering the night turned out to be. Bubblegum Screw consists of a German, a Jew, a New Zealander and I have no idea where Mark and Mike are from, but I'm sure you may be wondering where you've seen them before… think London, think 'Dead Famous'! But whatever you do, do not think of this band as being just another re-hash trying to make it in different form. They're in a class of their own! And fair due to them for actually turning out as they were all suffering quite badly with this nasty evil cold swarming its way round the country.

So what to expect? Well the guys classify themselves on myspace as Punk/Garage/Glam. Do I agree? Hell yeah! Their influences domineer everything, from stage presence to attitude to length of track to the most important factor; sound, which to be honest makes a refreshing change. There are so many bands out there who state their band influences when really they should be saying, ok, these are the bands we listen to, but they've got fuck all to do with what we're actually producing!

Firing on all eight cylinders (to coincide quite nicely with their 8 song setlist) the guys delivered a splintering punk fuelled exploit of rock n' roll delight with opener 'Love Is Inspiration', waking their audience in one fail swoop, and after the tripe we'd had to listen to beforehand, we needed waking. And wake with a smile is what I did.

Imagine amalgamating Iggy & the Stooges, Faster Pussycat, The Orphan Punks and The Damned and you'll be one step closer to the reality that Bubblegum Screw truly are. There really was no stopping the onslaught of sleaze infused punk, the only problem, the set seemed to be over before it really begun, which left me distraught and begging to hear more.

It was an absolute pleasure to have had the opportunity to hang with these guys and even more a pleasure to have seen them live. If you miss this chance, shame on you!

and to finish, as I said I would...... Bubblegum Screw 'RUNNING FREE' in Manchester!

Bubblegum Screw top the bill tonite - and it's an action packed rock 'n' roll rollercoaster right from the off. The instrument free lead singer jumps around while snarling out the lyrics, and can be reminiscent of Jager / Iggy as he struts confidently about the place. He's accompanied by fierce chordwork and plenty of solos from the two guitars. Drums hammer away and bass follows suit with thunderous lines. Songs are fuelled with an American punk attitude - Iggy, Stooges etc, with a big wide streak of rock 'n' roll running through, though just occasionally theres a hint of early Damned to be found. Some intelligent chord structures see to it that things stay fresh and the band work tightly ensuring that their chaos is always controlled...just!. Even a few gremlins in one of the guitars can't stop 'em. A real powerhouse of an act, these guys deliver a brilliant live show.

"Putting the rock 'n' roll into punk are tonite headliners Bubblegum Screw, and the wild bunch certainly have a Ramones like sound as well as look. Some wild lead guitar solos come flying out, and the singer struts around with a Jagger-esque vibe, but at his most frantic and punky he leans towards a more Iggy pop like character. The songs are very riff driven, and can have a dark, urgent tone at times, but raunchy solos always arrive to glitz things up. The demo certainly didn't do these guys justice - this is one act you need to see live and even if punk is not your bag there's lashing of good rock here. Trashy, crashy punk 'n' roll that hits the spot - they're gonna kill ya."

Taken from Mike's own blog...

Me and the gentlemen of the band just finished mixing the final tracks of the new Bubblegum Screw EP, along with exceptionally easy-going and tolerant producer, Simon Trought. We went on later into the night than planned and I was very tired by the end, but it is finished and I hope you like the results...

The EP, is titled "St. Valentines Day Massacre", as all the rhythm section was recorded on that day of romance, not that I experienced any of that being trapped in a studio with a bunch of guys! Haha. Anyway, it includes 5 solid songs from our setlist with a little bit of variety throughout. I'm happy that this was a far less stressful recording than previous experiences I've had, and I would attribute this to the first rate attitudes of the good natured motherfuckers I work with, and the laid back atmosphere of working at Soup Studios with Simon.

Have a listen at: www.myspace.com/bubblegumscrew and drop us a friend request if you havn't already! Thanks and hope you dig it!
