Its been nearly six months since Pool of Frogs epic Fall Tour 2008, and we really miss the road. And what better way to remember the turbulent times than with modern mans' scrapbook: the photo-blog. As per always, the beautiful photographs of Ms. Jonaki Sanyal will be featured along side wacky anecdotes and thought provoking commentary.

If you recall, the night prior saw Pool of Frogs playing their songs to the good people of Akron, OH.  We drove night and day towards New York, only stopping to water our steed at the above depot, and later, taking a moment in a sunny cemetery to reflect.

Then we totally crammed into an old phone booth and took silly pictures...

We made it to New Paltz, NY as the sunset. A quaint college town at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, New Paltz holds a special place in the heart of dummer Will Duncan, a University of New Paltz alumni. In fact Will was practically mayor of the town and the many contacts he maintains was the impetus for Pool of Frogs coming thru to perform. Chief among Will's old buds is Jesse Towey, one of the most naturally talented musicains and artists you'll ever meet. We set up a show with his group: A Black China. He also let us all stay at his enormous apartment in the nearby town of Rosendale.

It Jesse took little time to acquaint himself with Budica.

It took POF even less time to unload our gear, soundcheck, and start tearing the townfolk of New Paltz a new one.

Chad is pleasantly surprised mid-song by Brent's infamous Australian handshake.

Will does this at least once every show.

And also he does this...

Also every show Joanki sneaks away and snaps one of these...

Pool of Frogs left the stage a sweaty mess for their buds A Black China.(clockwise) Matt, Jamal, Jesse, and Johnny Wang.

We had a great time in New Paltz. Will got to see a lot of old buds, we had Gormet Pizza, a few beers, some laughs. And the next day we had enough time to film a live performance in Jesse's little backyard garden.

And here's the video we made of the song "Eyes Roll."

Fall Tour Video 1: Eyes Roll in Upstate NY Garden

Big thanks to all our friends who came out in New Paltz, the boys of A Black China, Jacob Diaz for the surprise appearance, and especially thanks to Jesse and his girlfriend Erin for putting us up.

See more great photos by Jonaki Sanyal at flickr.

Next stop: POF takes a Brooklyn sized bite out of the big apple...

Finally we left Chicago early on Tuesday September 17th. We packed the trailer for the first of five thousand times. The cast of characters....

Chad Fess.............singer/ scientist
Brent Engel............bass/sales rep/ steel toe boots
Blake Sloane..........guitar/keys/wheelman
Will Duncan............drums/hype man/management
Jonaki Sanyal..........photos/moral support
Marius Glaus...........videos/photos/german-english translator

We had like eight hours til Akron, so Brent read aloud from Woody Guthrie's autobiography "Bound for Glory." You should read it.

Akron, OH: The Rubber Capital of the World

We had some time to kill so we strolled around the city block that is downtown Akron. Good people there.

We played at this little bar called The Matinee. It's one of two bars on the strip so at least half the folks in town
who wanted a drink that night had no choice but to witness the wrath of Pool of Frogs. It had this weird
open window in the front right behind the stage. More on that later...

Blake, Marius, Brent, and Will (front to back)

Jonaki was pumped.

We started playing and we were all pumped.

Chad was pumped.

Brent was quite pumped.

Even this girls stomach was pumped.

(Marius was the heartless bastard who snapped that shot, by the way.)

Most drummers can't make their entire kit sound as rock n roll as Willy D makes that one cymbal sound.

And most guitar players can't hold up a cue card with this kinda grace.

All night long Will and Brent couldn't stop running and popping their heads out that open stage window.

Then some cutie tried to fish-hook Will. But he didn't miss a beat.

Play on playas.

After the show we dragged Brent and Will away from a squad of hot chicks and drove by night. Once at a motel somewhere in
Pennsylvania, we began our narcissistic ritual of watching the video tape from that night.

About a half hour into that, we got this funny feeling that something was amiss, did a role call, and...

...realized that we had left Jonaki behind in Akron. She didn't seem all that mad about it, but was silently plotting revenge for the rest of the tour. See some more
of her photos at Flickr.

Next stop : New Paltz, New York

We took the stage and photographer Jonaki Sanyal
started snapping shots with a sweet new lens.

The crowd was awesome.

The Pool of Frogs beer cozy made its official debut that night.

Brent almost rock n rolled right off the stage.

Our good bud Coley from Welcome to Ashley, one of Chicago's finest rock
bands, was really hyping up the front row.

Then he ran up on stage to help sing the "Hallelujah's" in
King of the Catholic Church.

Marshmallows were pelted at the stage.

Budica was selling merch like crazy all night.  We'd like to especially thank
all the peeps who bought shirts, cds, or cozies.

We also need to thank a million times Mr. Arunas Inguanis aka Pauly D
for his continued help and support.

Thanks to Roosevelt Jenkins and Pistols at Dawn for playing their asses off.

Thanks to Jonaki for the badass photos. Support her work at Flickr.com.

And thanks to all the folks that came out that night.
We couldn't have asked for a better send off.

Stay tuned for more tour blogs. This is part one of a baker's dozen blog entries
 highlighting the Fall Tour 2008.

Amidst the commotion and calamity that was Pool of Frogs Fall Tour 2008 the band found time to craft a haphazard miniseries of live acoustic performances. The goal was to grab some unique moments from important locations along the tour route. Each of these videos is a rough and tumble rendition, less about superior fidelity and more about odd versions of our tunes in odd places...

This first installment was shot in our old friend Jesse Towey's backyard organic garden. He pulled out that old pump organ that Blake is playing and we went for a version of a newer Pool of Frogs tune called 'Eyes Roll'.  Thanks of course to Jonaki Sanyal for her participation as Polaroid Photographer and to Marius Glauer for shooting the thing all sweet and pro...

Fall Tour Video 1: Eyes Roll in Upstate NY Garden
..

For the second short in the series Pool of Frogs trudged directly into the belly of the beast. This video was shot in the middle of The Mall in our nations capital, Washington DC. Nestled snugly between The Washington Monument and The US Capital building we tumbled through a version of one of our new favorites 'Giant Molecules'. Stoic Dude With Mustache is played with astounding acumen by our old friend Zach Speakes. Thanks to Marius Glauer for shooting the thing all slick and pro...

Fall Tour Video 2: Giant Molecules @ The US Capital
..

Finally Pool of Frogs Fall Tour 2008 Made it's last stop in Brent's home town of Springfield Illinois. The best place to shoot the final installment of the Miniseries was without question The Cob House that Brent and his buds built. Cob is a building material consisting of clay, sand, straw, water, and earth, similar to adobe. Cob is fireproof, resistant to seismic activity, and inexpensive. It has been revived in recent years by the natural building and sustainability movements. It was decided that 'Black River' was the best tune for the setting so Marius Glauer
submerged us in his plastic version of said river for a portion of the tune...

Thanks again to all of our friends and loved ones who helped out on the Fall Tour. It would not have been possible without the continued support of good people like Jesse Towey,  Jonaki Sanyal, Zach Speakes, and Marius Glauer.

Pool of Frogs and Skybox, united in their awesomeness, played a show together a few weeks back.  Aside from the Boston/Styxx tour this summer, we challenge you to name a better two band bill.  Jonaki Sanyal was behind her camera, documenting the action...

The boys from Skybox made Brent smile with their hacksaw proficiency.

Skybox did a few acoustic hits on the rooftop to get things started.

Then Pool of Frogs wrangled the herd inside for their set. And you can probably guess what happened next.

Rock.

And more rock.

And even more rock.

And ever harder rock.

And river punk.

And then even more, harder rock than before.

And then, just when no one thought that any band past or present could possibly rock harder and louder, Skybox took the stage.

Tim and Chad shaking hands.

Christian with a rock pose.

Dan with a bloody head, cut on a cymbal whilst rocking too hard.  Notice drummer Mike with the guilty mug.

Will is feeling it.  Let it be said that Skybox is one of our absolute favorite groups. We listened to their record a bunch on our tour and we try to get out to see them whenever possible.  They are really blowing up right now in Chicago.  Tim and Christian harmonize like angels, and the band really rocks hard, and they write some of the catchiest tunes this side of ABBA.  It was an honor and priveledge to play with them.

Then we all hung out on the rooftop.  Brent's home-made moonshine got passed around like the antidote was in it. But Will definitely bogarted a lot of it.

Thanks to all the folks that came out, and also Sharyn, Diamond Don, and Mikul from Screen Print My Life for setting the thing up. Also props to Prash for helping run things.

Chicago based Pool of Frogs loves heading downsate to play for the rowdy river punks in the capital city. First, we love the drive (gas prices be damned)...

Next we love the history and politics...

Thirdly, we love Brent's pool...

Photobucket

But mostly, we loved the river punks.

Thanks to all our friends downstate, Marly's Pub, and Nil8.  And as always, a special thanks to the lovely Jonaki Sanyal and her prolific photodocumentation.

Ah friends. Just when you thought we couldn't possibly milk our recently completed five night winter tour for any more blog content, we have again defied your expectations.  Here's some more photos by the prolific Jonaki Sanyal. The feature of this spread is Budica. She's the rather stunning mannequin torso and head that the fine people of Cafe Kanichi-wa loaned us for the tour. She got onstage, helped sell merch, packed the trailer, and in a few rare moments when no one was looking, Chad swears she spoke to him.

Thanks, and stay tuned.
