I first heard of French multimedia artist and noodle-fetishist Tampopo (pictured above) via this entry on mnml ssgs in which blogger Chris mentions the Tobias remix of his track "Helicopters Got Cameras". I too loved that cut, so I went and found Tampopo's discogs profile which led me to his MySpace. I sent him a message giving him props for the track and letting him know I was probably going to use it on an upcoming mix. (mix yet forthcoming, watch this space) He replied, which is rare, and even went so far as to check out this blog. Tampopo related a funny story about sharing a cab with L.B. Bad during which Lamont lamented the Sabres of Paradise use of the melody from his cut: "The New Age Of Faith" (which I wrote about tangentially in this entry from a couple weeks ago)

Tampopo said:

"That's a long story and I laughed a lot because LB 'Elbee Bad' was so funny telling me (he's a black guy from NYC and it was like watching a good show on TV) the whole sh** on our way to Munich airport. He was pissed of course but in the end it seems that Warp gave him money for that and I think that he was credited on the record covers of the next editions… maybe you shld interview him…"

To which I replied:

"Maybe after I interview you first"

Imagine my surprise, then, when the somewhat reclusive Tampopo (in the tradition of some techno artists Tampopo is notoriously unphotographed) agreed to an interview! Things fell together relatively quickly and I emailed him a set of questions, he replied and then we went back and forth a bit. Interview and an exclusive unreleased Tampopo track behind the cut...

VINYL/DIGITAL RELEASE
The remix by Tobias. of my track 'Helicopters Got Cameras (nightflight)'
which was released in May2007 on the Belgian label Curle Recordings
is available now on vinyl and digital format on Curle's sister label Métisse (ref.03).

TRACKLISTING
A. Mark August 'Warm' (ZANDER VT Detune Mix)
B. Tampopo 'Helicopters Got Cameras' (TOBIAS. Remix)

INFO
'Warm' by Mark August was featured on the very first Curle
and got charted and played by everyone from Michael Mayer
and Miss Kittin to Âme, Sasha, Ripperton, Steve Bug,
Joris Voorn or even Convextion.
No wonder it got licensed to the 'Secret Weapons ep' on Âme
and Dixon's Innervisions label. Now it's finally time for a remix
on the original imprint, one by, without a doubt, currently the hottest names in the scene, Zander VT.
We've been following them since their first release on the Bpitch Control sublabel Memo and have been a fan ever since. With their deep and floating sound,
to us they seemed the only valuable remix candidates for 'Warm',
and as you can imagine they did a terrific job.

Tampopo's wicked track 'Helicopters Got Cameras (nighflight)'
on the other hand unfortunately went a bit unnoticed at the time
of its original release, since it was the B-side to Efdemin's 'Acid Bells' banger.
A good reason to have it remixed by one of the most important artists in the Berlin
scene since many years, Tobias Freund. Operating as Tobias. (on Logistic),
Pink Elln or together with friends as NSI (on Candenza), Sieg Über Die Sonne
or Odd Machine (with Ricardo Villalobos), he is a true talent that you will find difficult
to match. Something that you can clearly notice from the amazing remix
he did for us. What a package!!!

FEEDBACK
Josh Wink (Ovum)
Both are good. Different for different times of the night.
But both groove and work in a subtle fashion. Thanks!

Laurent Garnier
The B-side is nice atmospheric deep tripy techno, will definitely play it out.

Hernan Cattaneo (Rennaissance)
Excellent stuff, both tracks are really good. Please send more like this!

Mathias Kaden (Vakant, FAT)
10/10! I'll play both tracks, really good record!

Deetron (Music Man)
Yes, the Zander VT remix is exactly my thing, absolutely great track, I love it!
Will play this all the time...

Ripperton (BC, Planet E)
The Zander VT remix is in my chart at 5!

Kiki (Bpitch Control)
Both sides are killer! Full support!

Dan Curtin (Tuning Spork, Peacefrog)
Thanks for sending this killer record! Both tracks are excellent, the Mark August track
is full of tension and energy making it a for sure floor killer just like the Tampopo
track is, except in a different way. The Tampopo track is my choice here because of
its originality, deep and spacey but a completely wicked crowd freaker-outer.
Full Support!

D'Julz (Ovum, Pokerflat, Klang)
Great release! Both remixes are ace!
The Tobias. remix of Tampopo's track is in my chart at 4!

Ramin Raissi (Groove Mag)
Tobias. and Zander VT are some of Berlin's finest!
Will feature in the jan/feb issue of Groove.

Giles Smith (DJ Mag, Dessous, SecretSundaze)
Really diggin both tracks here. Zander VT's is a dramatic,
epic workout and love Tobias' heads down tracky groove.
Full support! Will give full review in forthcoming DJ mag.

Nico Deceglia (BBC Radio 1)
Thanks for this one, I like both of these remixes
and I've been playing them both in my sets!

Efdemin (Dial)
The Metisse03 is amazing!
Your label is on the right track, keep on like that!

Darko Esser (Ovum)
Very nice!! Especially Zander VT. Super dope!

Denis Karimani (Remute, Smallville)
I prefer the Tobias. remix here, cool sound!
He's one of my favourite producers of the moment.

Nico Purman (Vakant, Crosstown Rebels)
I like both remixes, great record both sides!!

Pablo Bolivar (Regular)
The Zander VT remix is big, I will play for sure! Full support!

Lucy (Perspectiv, Meerestief)
For me the one here is the Zander VT Remix, this is what I love to play!
I was already in love with the original,
and here Zander VT has done an incredible powerful trancy work.
It's a great innovation in relation to the original mix.
It's always difficult to touch such a magic track like 'Warm'.
I will play it really often. For sure in my january chart.

Anthony Collins (Get Physical, Resopal)
A is a great track and super sounding!!!
B is so hypnotique it makes you go wild :-)

Will Saul (Simple, Aus)
Love this – both mixes are great – difficult to choose a favorite
but I think the Tobias. mix just pips it...

Nhar (Mobilee, Plak)
Love the Zander VT remix, will play it for sure!!

Patrick Bateman (Tic Tac Toe)
Really really good release again from Curle!
Both tracks are SUPER hot! Full support and chart (January)

Benny Rodrigues (Underwater)
Wow, this is a great release with on both sides splendid trippy mixes.
Perfect for those late our moments, no nonsense but just a trip down
memory lane, full support!
Also still in love with the original 'Warm', you go Curle!

Fabrice Lig (F-com, Versatile, Third Ear)
Thanx for the tracks! Two artists, but a homogenic EP…
Everything about nice atmospheres and sound,
2 great deep/mental tracks!
Darko (Statik Dancin)
Another very good one from Metisse/Curle.
Personally I prefer the Tobias. rmx but I will play the Zander VT rmx
in more techno sets.

Tomaz (Switch, StuBru)
10/10! Two great remixes with a slight preference for Zander VT's job
on 'Warm', deep trippy stuff. Nice one!

Prinz (Café d'Anvers)
The Zander VT is a nice one!
But i like the Tobias. too ;-) will play both for sure!

Mark August / Tampopo
Warm / Helicopters Got Camera's Remixes
(Métisse-Curle)
4.5*

Great set of remixes of previous releases on the Curle imprint.
First up Zander VT put Mark August's warm through the blender.
Their remix is a long, drawn out epic affair with great pounding drums,
Detroit riff's and ethereal background soundscapes.
This has 4am stamped all over it and can see being big with fan's of Ame.

On the flip the ever on form Tobias. does what he does best:
a stripped down, heads down, lights out groove that just goes on and on.
A perfectly produced, warm bassline, simple percussive claps
and a mystical synth phases in and out of the groove getting louder
and quieter at key moments.

Go seek. (GS)

The new Curle Recordings, catalogue number 003, is available now as a 12 inches vinyl single and as digital download mp3s on usual recommended boutiques. Curle Rcds (based in Belgium, Europa) releases split singles featuring two artists, each one proposing a track. The missing one, number 003, was released on May 7th 2007.

ASide: Efdemin
'Acid Bells'
BSide: Tampopo 'Helicopters Got Cameras (Nightflight)'.

***

Having the likes of Troy Pierce and Magda playing your cut certainly endears it to the minimal techno crowd but dj's like Tiefschwarz, Ivan Smagghe and Chris Fortier are banging this double dose of dark mesmerizing evil minimal gear. Both cuts on this EP are stellar, not obvious boring minimal shit but well executed bigger than big room gear that begs for massive soundsystems! (seen on www.poo-bas.com).

Mystic and dark movin minimal tune. (seen of www.fenders.de)

WORLD DESTRUCTION
performed by TIME ZONE

Speak of the destruction. (x3)

This is a world destruction, your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
Countries are fighting with chemical warfare.
Not giving a damn about the people who live there.
Nostradamus predicts the coming of the Antichrist.
Hey, look out, the third world nations are on the rise.
The Democratic-Communist Relationship,
won't stand in the way of the Islamic force.
The CIA is looking for you.
The KGB is smarter than you think.
Brainwash mentalities to control the system.
Using TV and movies - religions of course.
Yes, the world is headed for destruction.
Is it a nuclear war?
What are you asking for?

This is a world destruction. Your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
The rich get richer.
The poor are getting poorer.
Fascist, chauvinistic government fools.
People, Moslems, Christians and Hindus.
Are in a time zone still searching for the truth.
Who are you to think you're a superior race?
Facing forth your everlasting doom.
We are Time Zone. We've come to drop a bomb on you.
World destruction, kaboom, kaboom, kaboom!

This is the world destruction, your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
Nationalities are fighting with each other.
Why is this? Because the system tells you.
Putting people in faceless categories.
Knowledge isn't what it used to be.
Military tactics to control a nation.
Who wants to be a president or king? Me!
Mother Nature is gonna work against you.
Nothing in your power that you can do.
Yes, the world is headed for destruction.
You and I know it, cause the Bible tells you.
If we don't start to look for a better life,
the whole world will be destroyed in a time zone!

Speak of the destruction. (x3)

---
Yeah! Lyrics again!
During the year 1984, Material (conducted by Bill Laswell)
teamed up with Zulu Nation impersonator Afrika Bambaataa
and 'Anarchy In The UK' punk rockish hero John Lydon (ex-Rotten)
and made this crazy single titled 'World Destruction'!

Still a sick tune to play, heavy rhythm
and simple but explosive synth lines.
Mutant electrofunkula at its best!

And what's left to say after taking a deep look at those clever lyrics?
Well, let's go for a 2007 re-release boys!
