This image of course belies the sweeping energy that flooded our little downtown bunker last night where friends upon friends gathered at first to hope, then to celebrate because we were given a reason to truly hope...but the image says everything that I felt in that moment. While we bigger people watched our bigger screens, Ricky, Sophie and Brooke watched their own little screen; placing pegs of their choosing to create an image of their liking. For them it was minutes of play. For us it was eight years of work and heartbreak. Too soon will they know what it is like to have to make impactful choices in this world. They will inheirit the consequences of our choices. But last night, I feel with all of my soul, that we gave them (finally) a new and better future.

In his resignation speech, I saw the McCain that I used to admire. Freed from the bonds of aproval he spoke his heart. For the first time since this campaign began...i believed the words he spoke. Electability was sadly his stumbling block. When he could have stood on his self realized foundation, he moved shop over a fragmenting sea of an embittered GOP and gave way to dirty pool that undermined his ability to lead and blackened his character...a character we all saw was there not long ago.

He was cursed with a nearly impossible job: solidify a base that not four years ago cursed his name with such vitriol that it peeled paint that could never be quite covered again. And how exactly would one bring together the base and still separate oneself from an administration that will go down in history as one of the most destructive in American history? You stay true to your convictions...and lead. But a pressure (none that any of us will probably know in our lifetime) caused you to choke. It turned you into a puppet of the traditional slogans, none of which rang with any genuinous. You jumped into the mud. Then they forced Palin on you. A woman who in another incarnation would imbody all that the Grand Old Party stood for and with the ability to realize it, but here in this reality was a whily, black hearted amateur - ten years short on experience, embarassingly undereducated and 40 IQ points short. And in that miasma of needing to win at any cost, you debased yourselves, your convictions and your party by using smear tactics that insulted us all.

But even with this win, the popular vote was frighteningly and disapointingly close. While Chicago cheered Obama's praise of McCain, Phoenix booed. We have a long way to go in rebuilding a unity back into a United States. But with all of my heart, I believe we have the team that can do so....
