Menno De Jong Interview (Aug 09)

1) Hi Menno, how are you on this fine day?

Very well thank you. On my way home from a trip that went through Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Beijing. It’s been another week full of new and exciting experiences with some rocking events and crowds.

2) You’ve had a bit of an action packed summer haven’t you, any particular highlights?

This summer has by far been the best one I have had so far. I was invited to be the resident of Global Gathering this year and those have been some of the best gigs I have played to date. Other than that, Nature One, a tour in the US, playing alongside names ranging from Carl Cox to Orbital and Armin van Buuren to Tiësto, what more can a DJ want?

3) From all the Global Gatherings you have played, which has been your favourite?

That’s pretty much impossible to answer! I must say that it was very unique to play in Belarus as an event of this size is something very new for the crowd there, but nevertheless all the other ones have been amazing. Closing out the UK Global Gathering was great too, Markus Schulz and I jetted over from another festival in The Netherlands and I played after him to end what was a long day for the clubbers. I felt very honoured that everyone partied hard till the very end!

4) This summer also saw the return of your massive Intuition Summer Festival, how did it go? How long has it been running for now?

This was the fourth Intuition Summer Festival that we organized. It started out with about 500 people on a very rainy day on the beach back in the days. This summer we had around 1500 Trance lovers going crazy to some of the best DJs we could get a hold of. Just picture it: the DJ booth is placed so that the crowd can see the sun setting over the ocean, the entire crowd is jumping to the tunes that are played and everyone is walking around smiling. It just doesn’t cease to amaze me how the event has grown to something so beautiful.

5) The Top 100 DJ Poll has come back around again, if you were to vote, whom would you be voting for?

In random order I would vote for: Gareth Emery, Mat Zo, Cosmic Gate, Sander van Doorn and Eric Prydz.

6) Now, as you well know you will be featuring at Godskitchen’s birthday, with this in mind, what would you buy Godskitchen as a present if you could?

A bottle of Sambuca! In fact, I might bring one indeed.

7) We’ve all been bought rubbish birthday presents over the years, socks, underwear, you know the culprits, what is the worst you have ever been bought?

I only ever get alcohol for my birthday. People must think there is something seriously wrong with me! Or perhaps they just look forward to drinking it on my next birthday or BBQ.

8) A reliable source here tells me you like to play the Rusty Trumpet (don’t shoot the messenger haha), would you care to elaborate on that for us?

I have a disgusting little brother who likes to spread false rumours about me to the people of Godskitchen. Very naughty considering that I took care of his ill self after he had too much to drink at the Godskitchen Future event in Newcastle a few weeks ago! ;)

9) What’s the funniest thing you have experienced this week?

In Kuala Lumpur where I am about twice people’s height I had to run to meet someone whilst it was raining as if there were a monsoon going on. I wore a plastic poncho to stay dry and the local people looked at me as if I came straight from the zoo. Their faces were priceless.

10) What was the last text message you received?

From a friend / fellow musician saying he just got the new job he had applied for. Congrats Joost van der Vleuten!

11) If you could go back in time and live in any era what would it be?

I would have liked to witness the first 5 years of Electronic Dance Music. Otherwise – I would have also loved to see Beethoven in real life.

12) What is your pretend porn star name? If you don’t know how to do this, you have to take the name of your first ever pet and your mother’s maiden name…

Pookee Buffalo. Well, sort of.

13) If your house were to burn down what would be the 3 things you would save?

My MacBook Pro, vinyls collection and piano. Judging by the weight of the last two I would probably end up dying of smoke poisoning.

14) Finally, what is your favourite joke at the moment?

Two elephants and a snake fall off a cliff. Buddum, tschhhh

Many thanks for your time Menno De Jong and we are all looking forward to hearing you back at Godskitchen for "The Birthday" celebrations on Saturday 26th September.

In September, it's Godskitchen's birthday and that can only mean one thing - one hell of a party. After a little time away from Air, the smiling dutchman Sander Van Doorn makes a welcome return and will be raising the temperature in the main room with a typically electric performance. Markus Schulz was announced as GlobalGathering's worldwide resident this year which has seen him fly to all corners of the globe, wowing crowds with his powerful blend of melodic music. Menno De Jong has quickly become a crowd favourite with the Godskitchen regulars with show stopping performances at last year's christmas party and this year's GlobalGathering, his Intuition podcast is now one of the most downloaded podcasts online and is most definitely one to watch in the future. Another man to watch for the future is Jerome Isma-Ae who will be making his much anticipated Godskitchen debut, his blend of Progressive House and Trance has been sending shockwaves across the electronic scene and is now held in high regard by all of the big players within the industry.

Few people can claim to have been at the pinnacle of their profession for a sustained period of time, having enjoyed so much success and still be leading the way forward. John 00 Fleming, one of the dance music industries most revered personalities, is amongst a small band of people who can say they were responsible for igniting the spark of the scene we all know and love today.

A DJ career spanning more than 20 years from the ripe old age of 15 has afforded John 00 the sort of experience that most other DJs can only dream of. Never afraid to push the boundaries in the projects that he turns his hand to, he is the owner of the hugely successful J00F recordings and hosts his own radio show on Ministry of Sound/DI.FM, the highly popular Global Trance Grooves.

A musical taste that transcends genres and his determination to seek out fresh, new, exciting music has resulted in John playing in almost every corner of the world and selling over 1 million CD compilations in his career.

Where are you at the moment?
Talking to you!

How has 2008 been for you?
I dream for a whole week where I can have a huge lie-in every morning and not worry about deadlines and having to get on a long-haul flight….as you can see it's been very hectic!!

Your latest album (with Digital Blonde) has had it's release date put back into early next year, what can we expect from it?
Even more music! The release date got too close to my Ministry of Sound Euphoria album, so it made sense to delay it. This has bought us more time to dig into the 00.db hard drive and finish of even more gems. The album has now turned into a double CD with a gem of a single to support it.

You also have a 00.db tour of India coming up soon, any plans to do more live stuff over here in the New Year?
We're keeping the 00.db live thing pretty exclusive, after all you don't want to ruin a good thing. When we where asked to perform at Sunburn festival in Goa, we jumped at the chance!!!

You're returning to Godskitchen after a quite an absence, any particular tracks you are looking forward to digging out for your classics set?
People who know me will know that I don't head for the obvious classics, after all we've heard them time and time again at various classics nights and on many compilations. I like to surprise people on the dancefloor, making that 'wow' moment bringing back memories of a track they haven't heard for a long time…and those are often the best ones.

In the spirit of the NYE party being a classics night, can you name your top 5 all time tracks?
No, wait until the night…it'll spoil my surprise!

What was the best night of your life?
Being told I had been cured of cancer, a precious moment that will stay with me forever :-)

Any particular disaster stories you care to share with us?
A club in Dorset catching fire as I was playing. They was confusion at first with people not realizing what was going on then we all ran outside…only after a grabbed my record box of course!

What were the last 3 items you bought?
Onmisphere synth for my studio. Sports exhaust for me car and USB modem for my laptop…not very exciting I know!

What is the last text message in your inbox and who is it from?
A very poor joke for Ricky (Digital Blonde), cant be repeated here as its that bad.

You write alot of blogs on your myspace page, some of them quite controversial, what made you come up with the idea and have you ever written anything you wish you hadn't?
I'm simply passionate about the scene I'm in. It's difficult seeing people abuse our club scene for the wrong reasons and know one seemed to be doing anything about it. I'm from a background and culture of music lovers, and this scene seems to be getting replaced by fame hungry greedy people, that are taking away the specialist clubs and clubbers. I figured if I don't speak out, who will. After all many people are feeling the same.

Finally, what is your ultimate midnight NYE track?
Stop trying to get my secrets out of me!!

You can catch John performing at Godskitchen's huge NYE classics party at Air in Birmingham alongside Tall Paul, Guy Ornadel and more.

We bring in 2009 with a bang as we welcome one of the biggest hitters from 2008 back to Air, Eric Prydz. Eric's profile has rocketed over the last 12 months which has lead to him reaching almost inconic status in some parts. With numerous headline appearances at some of the major festivals around the world as well as a tour list as long as anyone's he is as busy as ever. All this backed up with productions galore coming from his many guises, Eric is on a one man mission to take over the world, his skill behind the decks as well as in the studio is almost un-rivalled. The Nitrogen room sees local heavyweights, Spectrum take over once more following on from the success of their last visit to Air. They have sealed the services of another production hotshot, Hervé who will be headlining proceedings. El Residente, Pete Jordan gets in on the action once more and will be joined by guests such as Dolby Anol, Heavyfeet and Jo & Will Ask for some break-tacular action!

Blake's love for electronic dance music began in New Orleans. At the age of 15, he would sneak into the cities freshest clubs to see such influencing acts as Sasha, Armin Van Buuren, and Sander Kleinenberg. Almost immediately, Blake started making his own contributions to the underground dance music world, firstly in the form of a floaty progressive breakbeat single "Apricot" with former production partner, the late Starkid. From here he helped define the atmospheric and progressive breakbeat movement at the time with singles such as "Destin Beach" and "Okoboji". His production efforts not only got him acclaim in the dance music community, but academically as well, having received a full scholarship to Loyola University New Orleans College of Music Business.

With Blake's return to Godskitchen imminent, we thought we would catch up and take 5 minutes with him to find out what's going on in his life at the moment!

With 2008 coming to an end now how has it been so far and how is 2009 shaping up for you?
-I've recently started a very unique album project that I plan ..ing by spring 2009...and lots of touring.

What have been your highlights of 2008?
-This recent tour of Asia has been amazing - Shanghai, Hangzhou, Bangkok, Manila, Seoul, and Tokyo, all fantastic gigs!

How did you initially get into Dance music?
-My older brother Shane used to bring home mix CDs from local New Orleans DJs every weekend after clubbing. I started sneaking into clubs with a fake ID soon after that and it just grew from there.

You are well known for your productions, which came first for you, production or DJing?
- It was simultaneous really...I wanted to make the records I was playing

You must rack up alot of air miles through touring, obviously this would have many perks but what are the downsides of this for you?
-Jetlag definitely...also being in airplanes for 20-40 hours a week really does a number on your sinuses and its really easy to become ill. Passport control officials and customs seem to not really like DJs.

How do you find the difference between playing back home and say, playing in the UK?
-Its really not that much different...Both Chicago and UK have a rich history in dance music, therefore the audience is really educated and up to date on the tunes. It makes DJing alot more fun than just playing the hits.

Any DJing disaster stories you care to share with us?
-Plenty...I've had the power in the DJ booth go out on me 4-5 times now in front of 3000+ people. Im just not lucky when it comes to that.

Have you ever had any strange requests from fans on your travels?
-No not really yet, my fans are pretty reasonable people.

If you hadn't become a DJ/Producer, what would you have been?
-Sound Engineer or Tour Manager / Booking Agent

Do you have any strange requests for your rider?
Ive never even seen my rider so I'm not sure whats on it lol.

Where are you right now?
-Narita Airport, Tokyo Japan, waiting to board my flight home.

If you ruled the world for one day, what would you do/change?
- Id buy everyone a drink

So what can we expect to hear from you at the Godskitchen Xmas party?
-lots of great tunes from all my favorite producers, and some new productions and remixes of mine.

You have 50 words to plug anything you like, go for it.............
-Please check out my radioshow "Concentrate" on DI.fm every 3rd thursday of the month, also check my website blakejarrell.com and add me on facebook and myspace.

You can catch Blake playing alongside Armin van Buuren, Menno De Jong and more at the Godskitchen Xmas party on Friday 19th December.
