SL Records Singles Club

volume five

I Am Scientist - Cancer Stick

Cruiser - it's all good baby (The Magnificents remix)

Welcome to the latest installment of the SL Record singles club. This month a bit of a change, we've got two tracks from the lovely people at KFM Records, another Edinburgh based label with a multifarious back catalogue of gems.

I Am Scientist - Cancer Stick

First up an old classic from KFM Record's founder, and world BMX Champion, Scott MacDonald's rock outfit I Am Scientist. Described as "better than Elastica" by the NME at the time of it's release in 2000 the bands debut, and so far only, album "No Signal" had crtical acclaimed heaped on by the music press and public alike. Scott, as well as hold the reins of the lable, is currently recording under the moniker Iglomat along with David Jack and Texan Sandy Carson

Cruiser - it's all good baby (The Magnificents remix)

Cruiser's stunning second album "happyrobots:smilingpeople" was out last year and being tireless workaholics the band have been busy putting together an album of remixes, faeturing the likes of Kid Carpet, Tiger Tiger, Luke Solomon and this tasty little number with labelmates The Magnificents twiddling the knobs.

If you want to catch a listen to the freaks very own Luke Solomon's epic remix of 'a gentle press', get on over to our beloved KFM records as they have it up on the infamous myspace player

Luke Solomon launches New Label 'Little Creatures'

Inspired by Talking Heads and newborn children, DJ and producer Luke Solomon is doing what he vowed he would never do again – set up a record label. The label named ‘Little Creatures’ is a continuation of Luke’s musical manifesto that saw him set up the clubnight of the same name. Starting out at the now defunct AKA in London, Luke used the moniker to showcase his musical tastes through 8 hour DJ sets. These legendary sets encompassed everything from funk and soul to disco, house and techno revealing Luke’s stand against the ever increasing desire to pigeonhole dance music. Now, five years later, this concept is being played out with the emergence of this label.

In addition to being released digitally, each release will also be put out on limited edition vinyl complete with artwork and with an exclusive mix of each track. Luke’s first release for the birth of this label is the fittingly titled ‘Ultrasound’ which will be remixed by a few of Luke’s favourite artists, new and old. This will be followed by Luke’s remix of a track by the Scottish band Cruiser as well as a live tribal track featuring Nigerian singers and a mid tempo disco record.

The intention: to take people on a journey through his left field taste in dance music with absolutely no compromise.

24th OCTOBER AT THE GREENSIDE

Something of a treat and a double bill we can heartily recommend to you - Dutch masters Persil are making a rare and welcome visit to the UK and take in the outer reaches of the Kingdom of Fife, at the Greenside in Leslie, near Glenrothes.

We’re fans of David and Martine’s infectious electro pop, having promoted them more than once, indeed staging them at Tigerfest and GoNorth. And we make no apologies for our unbridled favouritism in making this an itm? recommended show, as we’re in good company - the band received the endorsement of no less than John Peel, recording two sessions for his show.

Sharing the bill with them, another favourite and another band we’d call friends, if they’d let us.

Cruiser have seen many lineup changes through the years and their musical style has moved from kitchen-sink “21st Century Caledonian Pop” to something more minimal and electronic. The now four-piece have over the years, gone from being faves of Steve Lamacq to the more current Colin Murray, if we’re collecting Radio One DJ kudos.

All this plus the chance to check out one of the most interesting venues in Scotland, one which despite its fairly off-the-beaten-track location consistently gets in interesting and high profile lineups. Hopefully we’ll see you there, if you see us buy us a drink…

IS THIS MUSIC? (August 21st)

Resplendent in tartan, Cruiser are in line with the weekend’s Scottish theme. Their blend of neatly produced electronica, with floaty, dreamy unison vocals is a perfect antidote to the hangovers we’ve all been fighting. The crowd are more than receptive, and the two female fronts look relaxed and happy as they run through their set with ease. A nice highlight is the use of vocoder, and as they wrap up I feel refreshed, and ready to tackle more Bella!

The List (August Issue)

HAPPYROBOTS: programmed to love you

Despite a touring schedule which might fairly be described as minimal, Fife’s long-serving Cruiser are still criminally under-rated. So anything that gets the gospel out there – particularly a well-realised remix version of their last album Happy Robots:smilingpeople – is a good thing.

HR:ptly is a good to gorgeous record in its own right, although many of its contributors (Laugh & Peace, Tiger Tiger, pndc) might be unfamiliar names. Perhaps the most recognisable are Kid Carpet, who provides a suitably DIY electro version of ‘Input’, and Luke Solomon, with one of three versions of ‘A Gentle Press’. Edinburgh’s The Magnificents also make a welcome return with a suitably Krautrockin’ take on ‘It’s All Good Baby’.

Hey there peoples we are proud to announce that our remix of kid carpets hitting the wall will be included on sunday best records album increase the peace vol 2, were mega thrilled about that and a big thanks goes out to the kid for letting us get our greasy paws all over his thingy and of course all involved at sunday best.

Photobucket
Sunday Best Recordings proudly presents the 2nd in our series of Increase The Peace digital compilation albums - designed to showcase our latest and greatest cuts, plus a few gems from our back catalogue, and all at a bargain price to help people can get a flavour of what we’re all about. It will be available on iTunes from March 2nd 2009 and all other DMS from March 30th.

This edition kicks off with Soft Little Sound a classic track from Lazyboy’s 2004 album Penguin Rock.  Lazyboy is Sunday Best head honcho Rob da Bank’s alter-ego alongside multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire Dan Carey (who has just finished producing the new Franz Ferdinand album and has worked with Hot Chip, Kylie, CSS, Sly & Robbie and Lily Allen in the past). A new Lazyboy album is due later this year so this acts as a wonderful reminder of what we’ve been waiting so patiently for!

Next up is Say You’ll Be Mine by Kitty Daisy & Lewis – the B side to their Going Up The Country single and a track many would argue should have been on their debut self-titled album, particularly as it was written by Lewis.  This is followed by The PolarBear P.S. version of dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s phenomenal Letter From God To Man.  A digital-only B side to the single release, this version of the track sees Dan drop the Radiohead sample in favour of a stripped down stuttering beat and sees spoken word maestro PolarBear add his own P.S. ending to the track, lamenting how God’s ‘funny side’ often gets overlooked. Genius.

Hugh Frost AKA Sportsday Megaphone steps up next with his recent single and album highlight Meet Me In Middle - a dazzling, bedroom-disco evocation of young love and compromise. With a bit of luck there’ll be a beautifully animated video for this tune coming your way soon (that right Hugh?!).  Kid Carpet graced 2008 with his wonderful 2nd album Casio Royale and here we have the album’s epic opening track Hitting The Wall remixed by Scotland's finest electro heads, Cruiser, who turn the track all gospel and goose-pimply!

Christopher D Ashley picked up props in 2008 for debut album Cruel Romantics from the likes of the NME ("Sluttish warehouse electro from London's coolest new producer") and Music Week ("Something quite special") and here we bring you album track We Ain’t Though for your listening pleasure.  Grand National released their much anticipated 2nd album A Drink & A Quick Decision in early 2008 and Cut By The Brakes was the 3rd single from it that never happened. Which is a shame as it’s sensational!

More dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip goodness comes in the form of the Sunday Best Cosmic Dub of their Thou Shalt Always Kill anthem.  It’s the first in a series of Sunday Best remixes produced by one of our in-house musical whizz-kids.  Next up is a special dub version of You’ll Never Find featuring Rodney P from the Dub Pistols brilliant 2007 album Speakers & Tweeters. The Dubs return in the coming months with a new single Back To Daylight featuring Ashley Slater (of Freakpower fame) and a brilliant new album entitled Rum & Coke. Be prepared to be blown away … again.

And finally, we come to Kid Carpet’s charming Cowboy. One of the many highlights from his live shows and also the closing track on his Casio Royale album. And perhaps a lesson for some in these ‘credit crunch’ (yawn) times…
