Hello Friends,

Portland radio station KUPL 98.7 now has a hold off my new CD Dip Your Beak!  Looks like they are playing I Don't Want It Told tonight sometime between 10:15-12am.  So call up the station and request to hear it.  If we call enough, we might get some regular rotation!  Here's the request line: 503-733-5000 and tell them you wanna hear James Sasser's I Don't Want It Told.

thanks-James

James Sasser: Dip Your Beak [Album Review]

James Sasser always seemed to transcend the typical country stereotype. There are no pickup trucks here; there are, however, plenty of broken hearts. What sets Sasser apart, as far as my limited experience with country music can tell, is that Sasser doesn’t write country songs. He writes your standard rock tune but puts it to a country sound.
Dip Your Beak, then, follows along the lines of prior releases The Melcliff and Southside Of Sorrow. Songs like “Lonesome Eyes” and “I Don’t Want It Told” include that southern swagger, while tracks like “Beautiful” find Sasser dropping in rock-based riffs and, perhaps most surprisingly, harmony vocals.
What isn’t surprising is that Sasser continues to make country music fit for the non-country fan. His drawl backed by the occasional hand-clap and highly distorted guitar riffs in “If You Think You’re Mine” are telltale signs that Sasser is in rare territory. This style has grown from the early days, and it continues, progressively, with Dip Your Beak.

Hello friends of internet bloggery,
Much has happened since I last did one of these things.  We finished a new EP called Dip Your Beak, had two great cd release shows on the same day and now Dip Your Beak is out on CD Baby.com.  As you can tell, we're going to be playing a lot more this year.
If we haven't played your neck of the woods in a while, send an email and let us know!  Hopefully you'll be seeing our striped Ford Econoline roll in!  We're also dialing in the website, which is brand new if you didn't know.  So the big question is: Do you have a copy of Dip Your Beak yet?

See you at the shows!- James, Greg, Phoebe & Kevin

Hello Friends,

I'm extremely excited to announce that Kevin Major will be our drummer! For those of you who don't know Kevin, let me tell you, he is one of the most talented drummers in the Northwest...without a doubt. Kevin and I played together from '00-03 in our band called Junco Parker. He's been a mainstay of the Portland roots scene since the nineties. This is the main reason we'll be taking more time with the recoding of Dip Your Beak. The last three weeks of rehearsal have been very inspiring, with Kevin and Phoebe really gelling and Greg's move to guitars. This is the best we've sounded, period. -james

Can't wait to hear us play?
Here's your first chance:

Looks like we're going to take a little more time with this one.

The projected August release is now being pushed back.  We'll be updating the update update real soon...So you know, we have a new member of the band, but we're gonna hold on and tell you all later.  It is really kinda big, at least for me it is!  Later on-james

Hello Friends,

Just thought I'd fill you in on how the new CD is going...So far we tracked about 15 songs and it will most likely be trimmed down to 10 or 11.  As you may or may not know, its called Dip Your Beak.  I'll be posting some of the songs in the next couple of weeks.  We're (greg, phoebe and i) shooting for an August release, so stay tuned for a release party around then.  I'm really happy with how the songs are turning out.  I think its the best stuff yet.

Hello Friends,
Back in September our song Chinatown, was selected for the soundtrack of Rip City a documentary of the Portland skate scene. It was featured at the X-Dance Action Sports Film Festival in January 2009 nominated for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Original Soundtrack!  The movie was made in association with Fuel TV and NikeSB.  We are really excited about being a part this. Check out clips at www.myspace.com/ripcityskate
Big thanks to Hank at Failing Records for all his help and support!

The Melcliff is now up on a great site called Miles of Music. Here's the link: http://store.milesofmusic.com//S/James_Sasser/44799.html Check it out! You'll find tons of great folk/country/roots/americana rock bands here. -James

The Melcliff
The Melcliff shimmers, vibrates and swirls as if it was recorded in the halcyon folk-rock days of Los Angeles in the 1960s, not Portland in 2006. Sasser combines a soft croon with minor chords, chiming acoustic guitars and a warm reverb. Think an Everly Brothers record without the harmonies or a Mamas and Papas record, with just one Papa. Sasser's engaging songwriting makes The Melcliff one of the terrific surprises of the year. -- Jeff Weiss. Miles of Music (self-released)
