common cause #19 (w. elitechnique)

to be honest, i only really knew "munich emotions" when i asked elitechnique  to make a mix for my show. but as you've heard in that mix, and as you will read below there ofcourse is a lot more to those Rotterdam disco-brothers.

Q/A WITH ELITECHNIQUE

1. what are future plans, musically?
We're dedicated to putting the new Clone Loft Supreme Series firmly on the map with a series of upcoming 12 inches. After that we plan to work on an Album. Generally we always look forward to expanding the No Shit Studios (we have a new mixing desk but no toilet) with more and more gear, thus expanding the elitechnique orchestra with evermore sounds (last years Hammond and Flugelhorn have been featured heavily in our recent releases) maybe a marimba?

2. what are you doing besides music?
We (Remco and Florentijn aka Phako and Florintintin) make our living from making music. Besides elitechnique we work together on quite a lot of (music)theatre projects mainly in Holland and Belgium but next year also at the Deutches Theater in Berlin (somewhere in May 2010). We're specialized in creating very specific sound systems for each play we work on. For a recent King Lear we bought 200 organ pipes to build a computerized organ from Hell during the Storm scene, for a streetcar named desire we had Talkboxes plugged into a central heating system to suggest the sound coming from the neighbours. Futhermore we organize various "art" projects like a midified drehorgel/carillon project (link) , Florintintin Dj's for the Holland Festival and there is a rumour that we are somehow involved in "Italo Maiden" (link)

3. is there anything else you want to say?
I told you more than i was supposed to

Elitechnique (Florentijn Boddendijk and Remco De Jong) is a Rotterdam based cosmic disco duo closely associated with Clone Records. They are known for their funky disco edits and solid remixes for Alden Tyrell, and Black Devil Disco Club, Sally Shapiro and more. They apply an array of vintage synthesizers to do disco edits on Magick Edits and live instrumentation productions for Clone.

The first Elitechnique release was the We Shall Control EP (Radius Records, 2006) – the Dutch origins and cosmic Italo sound of the record fuelled speculation that it was Alden Tyrell behind the mystery project. The guesses proved to be not too far off base: the next Elitechnique release was a remix for Tyrell taken from his compilation Times Like These. "La Voix", with its haunting vocals by Nancy Fortune, was released with remixes by The Isolators and Elitechnique in vocal and instrumental versions. A remix of Jupiter Black’s Giorgio Moroder tribute edit "We Like Moroder" followed – with a syrupy dub version that favours the slow-build of a New York indebted disco cut.

Early in 2007, an Elitechnique remix appeared on Black Devil Disco Club’s Black Sunshine (LoEB) "The Devil In Us (En Francais)". Elitechnique’s original production "Fingerfood" was delivered on Clone in early 2007, earning the pair accolades for their instrumental, as opposed to sample based approach. The EP was a seventies, New-York style, percussion driven disco track and featured a remix from Major Swellings (aka Prins Thomas) on the flip. Two edit projects followed in early 2008 under the name Editechnique on the famed Magick Edit Allstars – Disco Editions series. Hanging On A Solina, which featured edits of "Hanging' On A String" by Loose Ends and "I Got to Little Love" by Angela, and Dirty Kissing featuring an edit of Eddie Murphy and Simple Mind's "I Travel".

Boddendijk and De Jong have collaborated on a number of projects, including theatre music production for ZT Hollandia, among others, and work for theatre director Johan Simons. Level 8 (2004) was an early release from a former incarnation of Elitechnique called Level 8, released as a special production of the Paradiso Melkweg Productiehuis – the combined theatre department/production house of two of Amsterdam’s finest clubs the Paradiso and Melkweg. After many requests, the piece was released as a promotional item for the "To the Max" theatre performance, and featured an Italo disco remix by Ardath Bey (aka Alden Tyrell) on the flip side.

Florentijn Boddendijk studied sonology at the Academy of Music in The Hague where he developed programmes for computers that generate music independently. Boddendijk also continues to make remixes and edits, notably under the moniker Florintintin producing live edits of jazz standards for the project Lapbop.

Rotterdam born Remco de Jong released a number of 12”s on Dutch and American techno labels (X-Sub, Tapes and Direct-Drive) in the late nineties, and launched his Phako moniker in 1999 with a noir and loungey signature style. His first untitled 12” with Clone’s experimental imprint Dub (Djak-Up-Bitch) was a split release with E.O.G (Richard Barendrecht and Alden Tyrell). De Jong released three more 12”s and a full length CD, Shipyards and Engineering Co Ltd (2002) under his Phako moniker. He used to be a member of the Beta Bodega Coalition, with whom he performed at CTM.02.
