Fri, August 14: Shakin' All Over Under Sideways Down w/Mr Jonathan Toubin and special guests DAVID JOHANSEN and Josh Styles, Home Sweet Home (131 Chrystie, Lower East Side, Manhattan), 10:30pm, $5:Most of you are aware that Shakin' All Over Under Sideways Down is the weekly maximum rock and soul party where Mr. Jonathan Toubin and regular amazing guests throw down wild 45s, primarily from the mod soul, r&b, girl group, and garage rock canon but also a bit of movin' doo wop, glam, rockabilly, punk, boogaloo, ye ye, blues, and other related genres. So New York Night Train is thrilled to present special guest DJ David Johansen this week not only because he is one of our favorite vocalists, performers, and cultural figures, and the front man for one of the finest rock and roll outfits of all-time, but also because the New York Dolls are educators who introduced us to so many of our favorite songs that helped launch us on our current path. Mr. Toubin heard the Dolls versions of "Stranded In the Jungle," "Pills," "Don't Start Me Talkin'," "There's Gonna Be A Show Down," and the intro to "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" before he ever heard the originals and can hardly believe he's going to share the DJ booth with such an seminal figure in his musical journey. As one could imagine from a very eclectic career that started with the Dolls and wound up with all kinds of great contemporary rock solo albums, his tropical loungy persona Buster Poindexter, and his distinctive yet faithful interpretations of the Anthology of American Folk Music and other downhome blues material with the Harry Smiths (did you see him jam with Howlin' Wolf guitar god Hubert Sumlin a few years back?), Johansen is a solid music lover who's been studying popular song for decades, and, according to sources privileged enough to hear his mix CDs, the man has exquisite taste. Speaking of amazing records, Mr Jonathan Toubin's favorite DJ, Smashed! Blocked!'s Josh Styles, is also gonna throw down because Johansen is also hands down one of his all-time heroes as well.

next week, a living legend comes to Home Sweet Home! - Fri, July 17: Shakin' All Over Under Sideways Down w/DJs Mr Jonathan Toubin & James Chance (Contortions! James White and the Blacks!), Home Sweet Home (131 Chrystie), 10:30pm - 4am, 21+, $3: Next week New York Night Train Soul Proprietor Mr. Jonathan Toubin returns to his Friday Home Sweet Home base after much international touring with a very special surprise in tow - special guest DJ and performer - Mr. James Chance himself! That's right, THEE James Chance, the central figure in No Wave ( check out these cool photos), also one of the most important forces in the establishment of the dance punk genre (he pre-dated Gang of Four and made them look like Air Supply), the leader of The Contortions and James White and the Blacks. This massive skyscraper in the skyline of subcultural music history ( look at his discography!) will be hauling his legendary collection of get-down tunes from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s - super rare deep cut soul, funk, r&b, and other kinetic rough delights. James will also be blowing his saxophone and dancing like no other. A truly rare and legendary NYC experience. Dont miss it! Contort yourself one time! Contort yourself two times! Contort yourself three times!
Here's a short bio of James Chance lifted from Trouser Press for those of you who need a brief introduction:James Chance arrived in New York from his native Milwaukee in the mid '70s, hauling his saxophone and his given surname, Sigfried. He soon hooked up with Lydia Lunch and her crew of downtown adolescent artists/mischief-makers, playing briefly in the seminal Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, but he left in 1977 to form his own band, The Contortions. Maybe more than anyone else in the so-called No Wave set, Chance was fascinated with black music of the era, and with The Contortions, sought to integrate the horn-spiked stop-on-a-dime rhythms of funk and the heady freedom of Ornette Coleman's sax playing with the confrontational and political theatricality of punk. A tight rhythm section provided the band's funky skeleton, while open-tuned slide guitar, lurching organ, squawking sax, and all manner of groans and yells gave The Contortions their wild dissonance. Even today, with numerous bands in the post-punk renaissance acknowledging their indebtedness to No Wave in general and Chance in particular, The Contortions' blend of organized twitchiness and raw anarchy sounds remarkably unique. But like the scene to which they were so central, The Contortions burned out quickly, releasing only one album, Buy the Contortions, along with the four songs they contributed to Brian Eno's legendary No New York comp. Chance soon resurfaced as James White (in honor of James Brown) with a new band called The Whites which actually featured almost the same personnel as The Contortions. Part parody, part homage, part smirking catastrophe in action, James White and the Blacks moved away from the punk that had defined their earlier incarnation, and towards a fusion of the soul, funk, and free jazz with disco that ranks as one of the weirdest musical hybrids of its era. But like all of Chance's endeavors, The Blacks' one album, Off White, called into question in all sorts of interesting ways the meaning of "black" music and "white" music and the ways racial identity is inscribed in artistic creations of any sort. Also, in coming weeks look for more of Mssrs. Toubin and Styles, DJ Pasta from New Orleans, Ian Svenonius of Make-Up, Jon Spencer, Kid Congo Powers, Howie Pyro (Danzig, D-Generation, Blessed, etc), and many other prestigious Friday guests.
