Bru Lei :: Shroom Crumbs :: Public School Records

as reviewed by Justin 'Tha Shiznute' Chandler

If someone was to write a story about hip-hop music the narrative would
be perpetuated by the loss of its soldiers. In June 2007 a fine
producer and staple of the Columbus, OH scene, going by the stage name
of DJ Przm passed away due to a heart condition. Luckily, an emcee was
able to get the rights to some quality productions of Przms to help
let his legend live on posthumously, like so many of this musics
greats. That emcee is Bru Lei; a rhyme spitter that gives himself a
whole lot to live up to with his EP release "Shroom Crumbs."

It is pretty audacious, and possibly alienating, to call a release
"Shroom Crumbs" but it is a fair representation of the type of gritty,
raw, hip-hop music therein.

The album kicks things off with the track "574," which opens with a
pretty funny skit that sounds like an excerpt from the show "Cops" of
an alcohol-induced man doing a field test. Then the essence of the
music fades in--a funky piano cut that sounds like hip-hop version of
the Peanuts theme music. Here Bru Lei attacks the beat with his
straightforward flow, sounding like a less rugged version of MF Doom,
with this descriptive lines like, "My New Balance check me styling in
so many places/Chocolate Suede with the camouflage laces" and he keeps
on topic by expounding on his shoes throughout the cut. The song is a
perfect introduction to Bru, given that it isnt anything too deep to
draw a casual listener in, while it showcases his obvious skills.

He follows this up with a pair of nice concept-tracks with two very
different tempos. "Bad Reviews" features a soulful grunt backdrop,
whereas "Jean Grae" is a very soft and airy affair. The latter, of
course, pays homage to perhaps the best female rap artist in hip-hop;
almost certainly the best classified as underground. He explores both
his sexual attraction to her and the utter respect he has for her
abilities.

The only semi-misstep on the short release is "The Bruce Burnett Show,"
which has cool enough old school horns, though the sound is decidedly
lo-fi. In this case, the slightly subdued vocals hinder the overall
result.

The closer, "Spit About," has that same crackle of a record spinning in
the background and the levels seem a little off, which sounds like it
might have been a conscious effort to deliver a more pure form of
hip-hop, without all of the gloss. He spits more battle-style bars. He
comes across rough-edged here and may remind some of Sean Price with
his occasionally humorous slant.

So despite the daring recruitment of the sadly departed DJ Przm for the
release of "Shroom Crumbs," Bru Lei manages to more than hold his own
with the use of his solid mic skills. At only six tracks and a running
length of 18:30 the release does exactly what it aims to do; get you to
the dealer (or local record store) asking for more than just the
crumbs.

     Biography/>

Bru Lei

Tube tops and fortune cookies.  Not what you would expect in conscious hip-hop yet Bru Lei, Cleveland, Ohio native has his own marketing plan for success, touring with Atmosphere, Eyedea's & Abilities, Blueprint, Illogic, DJ Przm, Greyskul, Coolzey & Seel Fresh and Amos Famous would only be an appetizer for this starving artist's hunger. He has also performed with Sacramento, CA natives where; as he likes to be referred to as Bru resides for now.  These groups consist of Neighborhood Watch, Tribe of Levi and Righteous Movement and others.  Bru has spoken word talent from the heart that can be seen when he performs.

With parents who lent him the tools at an early stage in life to begin his career in music, Bru began making magic with a Fischer Price portable record player which led into receiving records such as RUN-DMC, Beastie Boys, Kool Moe Dee and LL Cool J.  Lastly, his parents provided him with a ticket to visualize hip-hop in all true cultural form: Krush Groove.  This inspired him to beat box, break dance and dabble in rapping.

"I wrote raps first when I was 10 or 11-years-old – I started recording in my uncle's studio," says Bru.

Once his love for hip-hop was solidified, Bru began to research the early 90s culture by means of MTV Raps, Rap City and The Box as well as various publications and his new out word love, video taping; at the tender age of eight-years-old.  Bru moved to Columbus, Ohio at this time and gained interest in Wu-Tang Clan, Nas and Mobb Deep.

Think Camp Lo, Atmosphere, DangerDoom and Wu-Tang Clan mixed together in a fresh blend of hip-hop fruit.  Bru brings a very natural spoken word sense, street smarts and humbleness with his music and because of this he has performed with such acts as Ghostface Killa, GURU [Gangstar], Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, RJD2, El-P, CAGE, Mr. Lif, Brother Ali, Soul Position, Envelope, Jean Grae, Pigeon John and many more.  With such a unifying collection of performances, Bru and his group, Spitball have been able to catch the USA by storm.

"I try to make my shit timeless," says Bru about his lyrical content.

Bru emceed a 16-bar line for a DJ Przm piece entitled, 'The Perfect Storm' that featured Illogic, Elypse The Pretenatural and Dro [Mighty Spitball Krew].

"Columbus was a tightly 'niched' scene where wack emcees stood no chance; ask anybody who knows the history," explains Bru.

Bru moved to Sacramento when DJ Przm fell ill and asked for personal support.  He stays in Sacramento because he sees potential growth within the local hip-hop community.

"Ask Huey P. Newton," says Bru who is conscious of Sacramento's history not to mention he emceed on the front steps of the State Capitol.

Sacramento has a new emcee, are you ready?
