Red Dirt Roundup Lineup Sizzles by Jeff Prince Cross Canadian Ragweed’s annual music festival in the Stockyards is always a blast, and this year’s lineup looks like another winner. One of North Texas’ most exciting bands, Jonathan Tyler and The Northern Lights, will be performing. I love the CD cover from their 2007 debut “Hot Trottin,” and the album is kick-ass too. Since
then, Tyler has signed a record deal with Atlantic Records in New York,
toured with Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd, won “best blues act,” “best
male vocal,” and “best group” at the Dallas Music Awards, and is
currently in the studio recording his Atlantic debut with producer Jay
Joyce (Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin, Cage the Elephant) to
be released next year. The
Gourds is another personal favorite that’s scheduled for the CCR show
this year, but there’s hardly a bad band among the entire lineup: The
Wallflowers, Randy Rogers, Robert Earl Keen Jr., Charlie Robison,
Brandon Jenkins, Band of Heathens, Stephanie Briggs, Seth James, Micky
& the Morotcars, Johnny Cooper, Whiskey Myers, Lucero, Jason Isbell
& the 400 Unit, Bart Crow Band, and, of course, the always rocking
CCR. The
5th Annual Cross Canadian Ragweed Red Dirt Roundup is from noon to
midnight on Sept. 6 in the “north 40” area next to Billy’s Texas.

Paint me a picture, Tell me you're story, Lately, I need to hear something real Time moves so quickly Changes come everyday Sometimes you find yourself drifting away When you're just playing the game
I felt your fire Took all your cigarettes Funny the simple things you never forget Like days in the summer Seem like they end too soon I watched the sun go down thinking of you What else can I do
Drove to the city Shuffled through our old bars 6th Street and Congress up late after dark Chapters and seasons Weren't meant to last so long Ya take what you can Before time pulls you on Where will you go? Where will you go from here?
There's a moment that you realize With every moment that you choose You're just one step closer to a day When you've got nothing left to lose
I couldn't tell you that I loved you I couldn't be the one to stay But I'm always thinking of you I hope you find a peaceful way
Where will you go from here? Where will you go?
-Jonathan Tyler

Much has happened since Halloween, but we gotta talk about Halloween! The venue was Rathskellar's Rest in Indianapolis, Indiana and the weather was prime for ghouls and goblins to be in effect. We were excited because up until that point, the tour had been mediocre at best. The worst was having to load all music equipment up 49 steps of stairs respectively only to play in front of two people (the opening act's mom and dad) prior to arriving in Indianapolis. So the Halloween show was something we were looking forward to, if for nothing else getting to perform in costume. But it was so much more than that. First, Rathskeller's is a prime, first class place with great food, a gracious owner, and a bar staff that should have it's own Olympic sport: Pouring drinks... they'd take the gold. JT and the Northern Lights were pirates. Kansas had a permanent marker and went totally all out to make his mustache (see pics). JT had the white wig, which would have made Dolly Parton envious. In the crowd there was everything from robots, to Sponge Bob. Running around after the show we were going to get into some trouble and we did, but it was at the after party we'd been invited to. Definitely sorority girl type of environment. Tim (Alternate Routes) is with us and with one of our crew screaming out of the van door at random ladies on the block, we embark on this party. The house is big. Three stories deep and like leaves in Chicago we scatter in this place. In the main house there's cheesy tunes playing on a big screen television, in the garage, there's beer pong and darts, and a pool table is going unused in the dining room. There's a moth in the spiked punch (still alive) and we're turned off because people are just standing around in their costumes. Turn off. But old Kirbster is having a good time with a cute little chef-ette he met at Rathskeller's. The chemistry is undeniable. It wasn't until JT started heckling the strangers that the fun begin. Once again, things happen in bits and parts; so it ends with a glass pitcher being smashed and shattered in the middle of the street by one of our own, the pumpkin holding the door open was kicked and damaged by one our own, some poor girl has her drink 'swashbuckled" from her hand by a sword-yeilding member of our clan, and Kansas got beat at a game of pool by a guy dressed like a plastic green army figure, and Beau lost at beer pong to a plastic green army figure. Go figure. We won't get invited back. Actually we were never really invited, but we made the party a real Northern Light party. Most of the pics are at Rathskeller's. Enjoy. So here we are in Morrow, Georgia on a midway stop to our next show with O.A.R that will be in Statesboro, GA. We did our first show last night and it was not only exciting, there was a sense of electricity in the air with the fans. Shout out to dude in the gray shirt who stood up the entire time of our show and enjoyed every minute. Also, shout out the the fella who danced during bright energy. He's sure to be sore right about now. But what you don't know is about NASHVILLE, baby! Two days of pure rest and unadulterated good times happened in the "ville." We shacked up with our publicist who welcomed us into her home and we had no issues denying her open arms: great showers, food, company, and peace of mind for the seven of us. We get in and immediately we're on the ground running by resting. After a brief stint of recharging our internal batteries, we hook up with a producer and from there we meet up with our booking guys and the hang out begins. So the night comes fast and it's Election Day eve, so Nashville is all about making sure folks vote and all we're about is making sure people know we will be performing the next night at 3rd & Lindsley. Now this venue has been described by every person we know as not a good performance space. Located in a mini-mall type of situation. Either way, we have plenty of invited guests so it could have been in the bathroom of a gas station, but we were ready to give the show our all. And to an extent . . .we did. We are loved for our gift of passion on the stage. Good music and passion is what we heard after our set. The place also emptied out after our set because we were ready to let loose. By the time we get to the Tin Roof (this was the first spot we EVER played in Nashville) O'Bama has won and we're on our way to doing our next show with O.A.R - so many reasons to get lifted. Here's the low down: Mo and Beau leave the Tin Roof in "bad condition". Mo is talking shit and Beau is seated on the sidewalk, head bowed, like a man who's lost everything . . . or is about to. We get back to our hostesses house and chaos in silence ensues. Mo and JT raid leftover homemade chili and Beau is roaming around trying not to become more victim to his condition. At some point during the night, Mo lost her chili and Beau was sitting in the hallway profusely apologizing to our much too kind hostess (Love you "H"). By the way, Mo didn't remember throwing up the chili and was reminded when she tried to blame it on JT. She still has no recollection. It's EJ's FAULT and we stand by that conviction. If you don't know EJ then you don't know E&J. Epic Night. THE DAY AFTER . . . we move in the silence of our thoughts and load the van with Kirby telling us if we want to eat and take piss breaks we "better" leave now. It was too much for Mo and Beau who cooperated beyond their own abilities. Jordan, Kansas, and Nick were the good guys this time. Actually Jordan has been on good behavior since the cops pulled us over in Iowa, but that's another story. So we are now back on the highways and bi-ways to our second gig with O.A.R on their REVERB campus consciousness tour: BE GREEN. That's our specialty being aware of how GREEN we need to be to keep the planet in check. So you have other tales coming in the next 24 to 48 about this entire journey. Questions that will be answered at some point before we return: How did the sprinkler head get caught in the trailer? How many articles of clothing have been lost since the trip? What's up with Kansas' amp? Subway anyone? Why is Kirby the lucky one? These an other answers to come with the next Northern Light report. We're having fun, making new music, meeting the greatest people and showing love wherever we go. Until next time! -Mo- Jonathan writing on the road The mighty Mississippi Where Champines Roam Halloween 08 Whig party - 01 Whig party - 02 Captain Morgan & Cheddar

The next big names in Texas music POP MUSIC: Our critics tell you which Texas acts deserve success in 2008 06:05 PM CST on Sunday, January 6, 2008 This time of year, plenty of music publications like to tell readers which up-and-coming acts will become big in the coming months. Is that interesting? Sure, if you like to dive headfirst into the murky pools of hype that still churn outside many recording labels' headquarters. Instead, music critics Thor Christensen, Mike Daniel and Mario Tarradell would like to inform you about some Texas music acts that actually deserve success. "The big time" isn't necessarily inevitable for these nine notable artists. But in our judgment, it should be. (there were 8 other artists listed in the article i left out for times sake-j.t.)
Lupe Hernandez Dallas musician Jonathan Tyler Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights At 23, Jonathan Tyler is too young to have seen Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin or Janis Joplin, but he's got their sound down pat. The Dallas singer-guitarist plays blues-rock with spit and swagger – check out his sweaty YouTube version of "Gypsy Woman" – but he also sings tender ballads that will appeal to the John Mayer crowd. Mr. Tyler and his band, the Northern Lights, recorded their debut CD, Hot Trottin, with help from local producer-engineer Chris Bell (Erykah Badu, Polyphonic Spree). And while it's not the most innovative album in the world, it has enough radio potential that major labels have reportedly begun sniffing around. • Mr. Tyler and the Northern Lights perform Saturday at the Cavern.
