Le Tourcoing Jazz Festival et Jazz En Nord ont le plaisir de vous annoncer le concert de Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 au Théâtre Sébastopol le 23 octobre à Lille.

Seun Kuti est le dernier fils de Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela Anikulapo Kuti était le musicien populaire nigérian le plus aimé, réputé pour ses textes engagés, ses prises de position contre la junte militaire de son pays, les politiciens véreux et tous les maux qui ravagent l’Afrique contemporaine. Il a créé une nouvelle musique l’«Afro beat» qui a marqué la scène nigériane au début des années 70.

Lorsque Fela mourut en 1997, Seun avait tout juste 15 ans. Il était prêt à prendre la relève : depuis lors, il dirige Egypt 80 dont il est le chanteur soliste et saxophoniste. Il a relancé ce groupe qui est devenu l’un des orchestres les plus légendaires d’Afrique.

L’Afro beat de Fela était un mélange mordant de funk et de jazz additionné d’une sensibilité africaine, une réminiscence de James Brown, en moins propre et vaguement perturbant. Avec Seun, Egypt 80 est aussi explosif qu’avec Fela, combinant les cuivres, claviers, percussions, guitares et chœurs dans une combinaison irrésistible.

Seun Anikulapo Kuti possède la grâce, l’énergie et la fureur de Fela. Tout est là : le geste, le phrasé, la solidité des cuivres, le groove incomparable des percussions et des voix d’Afrique. Étonnant de maturité, Seun et ses musiciens explosent sur scène. Ils ressuscitent avec bonheur le répertoire de Fela mêlé à leurs propres compositions.
