Finnish Female Fronted Rock-Metal Tour kicks a rocking start for year 2010!  For Selena and Sin, Manzana and Teardown will be touring Europe in January.  The package brings a breeze from various metal genres without forgetting 100% rock attitude!


FOR SELENA AND SIN is with no doubt one of the future major names in the scene of female fronted metal bands. Performing an unique mixture of metal, rock and pop, FSAS have had their distinctive sound right from the beginning. In 2007 For Selena and Sin recorded their debut album Overdosed on You. After the album being released, the Selena’s wasted no time getting on the road. Intensive touring through ..Finland.., Europe and ....Russia.... made sure the band became known by the big public. Finnish Melancholic Rockers will release their second album Primrose Path in ..Europe.., right after the tour, on 25th of January 2010.

MANZANA is a rock metal band from ..Tampere.., the working- class, industrial center of ....Finland..... Band combines heavy guitars with punky rock vocals, but also gothically darkened Bon Jovi- melodies, ice -cold loops and touching lyrics are there. Debut album “Nothing whole as a broken heart” went on Finnish album Chart on position #24 and second album “Babies of Revolution” on position #26. Manzana has toured ..Finland.., ..Europe.. and Baltic countries several times, and they are well known as a madly energetic live performers.

Manzana will release their third album “Industrial Hippies” on February 2010. First single and video "Everything but You" will be released for the European fans just before the tour.

TEARDOWN is ready for it´s first visit in foreign countries with many complimented demo reviews. The messenger of depressive metal was founded in the beginning of this century and had released three EPs. The latest, called "Cyanotic" was chosen for the Demo of the month in various metal magazines. Teardown gigs are usually considered well planned, atmospheric and heavy at the same time. Along with gigging, the band has been preparing material for the upcoming debut album that is so far without publisher.

Ydinkysymys: Tuliko kylmät väreet?

Jos oikein yksinkertaiselle päälle sattuisi, For Selena and Sin -yhtyeen voisi tyylillisesti sijoittaa johonkin Nightwishin ja Sentencedin välimaastoon. Kun bändin uusi levy Primrose Path jyllää useamman kerran soittimessa, huomaa siitä kuitenkin olevan moneksi.

Joissakin introissa on samaa tunnelmaa kuin kymmenen vuoden takaisessa Cradle of Filthissä. Myös Angtorian coveroimana kuultu alun perin Kylie Minoguen biisi Confide In Me on toteutettu upean jämäkästi ja naisvokalisti Annika Jalkasen puhdas, enkelimäinen ääni kuulostaa lähes epätodelliselta. Särmää viiteen biisiin tuo kadehdittavasti jyrähtävä vieraileva vokalisti Tuomas Tuominen.

For Selena And Sin on mielestäni ehkä yksi parhaista naisvokalistin omaavista kotimaisista metal-yhtyeistä. Musiikki on sielukasta ja taitavaa ja turhanpäiväiset tiluutukset on onneksi jätetty vähemmälle. Tunnelmat kulkevat pitkälti mollissa koko 12 biisin ajan ja niin taidokasta, sykähdyttävää ja ihanan melankolista kuin tuotanto onkin, loppupuolella matkaa alkaa puuduttaa. Ei makeaa mahan täydeltä.

Jyväskyläläisyhtyeen parin vuoden takainen debyytti sai kohtuullisen hyviä arvioita, vaikka bändin tunnelmallinen metalli oli laskettu turhankin varmalle pohjalle. Uusi levy on äänitetty reilu vuosi sitten, mutta jostain syystä sen julkaisemista on venytetty.

For Selena And Sin osaa tehdä hienoja biisejä, siitä Primrose Path on hyvä todiste. Totta on, että bändi ei ole omaperäisyyden perikuva, mutta sävellysten kaihoisat melodiat sinällään ovat vangitsevia ja yhtye käsittelee kappaleitaan pieteetillä. Vahvimmat vaikutteet löytyvät The Gatheringin vanhemman tuotannon suunnalta, ja yhtye on omaksunut hollantilaisbändin linjan hyvin.

Juuri vaikutteiden itsestäänselvyys tekee hallaa For Selena And Sinille, koska bändin omaperäisyys peittyy esikuviensa varjoon. Toisessa vaakakupissa hyvillä kappaleilla on oma painoarvonsa. Pikemminkin yhtyeeltä voisi toivoa hieman omaperäisempiä avauksia sovituspuolella, sillä nykymuodossaan sävellykset vaikuttavat perin turvallisilta ja – niin tosiaan – varmoilta. Rohkeutta, sitä ryhmä kaipaa lisää.

Follow up album for the Finnish gothic band after their debut in 2007.

 

Primrose Path is a good album for those of you who like gothic melodic metal with female singers on the front, in the same line than bands like Nightwish, Lacuna Coil or Evanescence, for putting a few examples. The voice of Annika Jalkanen is crystalline and clear, straight to your heart, but sometimes I  miss a bit more of risk trying to get higher notes.  

As most of the Finnish metal bands, their style and musical skills are excellent, and the album sounds very mature for a band not so well known internationally. However, the saturation of bands in the same genre during the last years puts some doubts in my head if they will be able to breakthrough, although it seems things are going well so far for the Finnish guys, touring around Europe.

 

Listen to tracks like Countdown to the Starts, the initial one, or Rusty Rails of Yesterday, and get immersed in a surrealistic atmosphere of musical pleasure (and a little bit of sorrow).

Primrose Path

Melodista metallia tarjoiltuna naislaululla, pienillä pop-koukuilla, sekä tuhdilla määrällä rock asennetta, siinä on osapuilleen jyväskyläläisen For Selena and Sinin perusidea. Yhtyeen debyyttipitkäsoitto Overdosed On You sulautti näiden ideoiden jatkoksi myös hiukan progemetallointia, mutta moiset koukerot on unohdettu tyystin toisella kokopitkällä. Nyt pääasiallisina aseina toimivat tarttuvat kertosäkeet, sekä suorasukaisemmat nostatukset.

Muutokset ovat kyllä ymmärrettäviä, mutta pientä syvyyttä bändi jää edelleen kaipaamaan, eikä Primrose Path nouse aivan ainestensa tasolle. Yhtyeen ytimen muodostaa tunnelmallinen metalli, jonka terävimmästä kärjestä nousevat mieleen ne alankomaiden kaksi suurinta alan bändiä. Vokalisti Annika Jalkanen ei kärsi vertailussa Sharoniin tai Annekeen, mutta muilla rintamilla jyväskyläläiset jäävät vielä useamman askeleen verran esikuviensa taakse.

Kiekon rokkaavampaa osastoa edustava Broken Mirror virkistää ronskilla otteellaan ja Bring Me The Sun kasvaa melkein albumin pelastavaksi kohokohdaksi, mutta lopulta kaikesta jää kovin keskeneräinen fiilis. Yhtyeen suunnattoman kunnianhimon voi maistaa Kylie Minogue lainassa Confide In Me, mutta edes tämä idioottivarmalta kuulostava liitto ei tuo täyttä pottia yhtyeelle. Bändi on kyllä kehittynyt, mutta samalla se on muuttunut vaarallisen valtavirtamaiseksi.

For Selena and Sin "Primrose Path"

“Primrose Path” is a brilliant fairy tale! It shows a more dynamic side of the band than the previous album “Overdosed on You”. Melancholic legends of stars and sun are melting down the feast of sounds in the second release of “For Selena and Sin”. The compositions carry away to a vortex of melodies…

The vocal’s line brings associations with lots of names in the field: Anneke van Giersbergen (ex-The Gathering, Agua De Annique), Nell Sigland (Theatre of Tragedy), Andrea Ferro (Lacuna Coil), and Amy Lee (Evanescence). But the manner of the singer Annika Jalkanen is not their copy in any way. She has the characteristic for the Finnish scene excellent voice training. The same as in the most of the Finnish bands we cannot find any influences – the voice is sterile pure, emotional and crystal clear.

Heaven is opening with the enchanting intro and an angel’s voice in “Countdown to the Stars”. The darkness still covers the seeking hearts in the second track “Bring Me the Sun” which appeals to finding an illusive path to the light of life. The songs “Rusty Rails of Yesterday”, “Horst” and “Summer Hill” are more symphonic notes of passion, trust, understanding and loss of opportunities. “Broken Mirror”, “Colour My World” and “Don’t Touch the Sky” provide a gorgeous contrast of the female vocals and male backing vocals in choruses. The bonus tracks “Five Days in a Row” and “Sister Sunset” feature other nice melodies with a great acoustic intro and powerful male vocals in the first and surprising voice technique in the second one. In this album you can find awesome guitar sounds and delightful atmospheric keyboards.

The album features a Kylie Minogue cover song “Confide in Me” which in my opinion is better than the original, because “For Selena and Sin” have made the sound heavier. These guitar riffs express strength. The interpretation in melodic metal gender is splendid. The richer voice of Annika imparts depth of tones.

All fans of Tiamat, Paradise Lost, the late albums of Cemetary, Dreams of Sanity, Silentium will be pleased to listen to “For Selena and Sin”. The band works in a well known niche which becomes more and more limited. “For Selena and Sin” are metal as far as there are strong guitars in their music! They are gothic as far as the 4/4 time rhythm sounds monotonous! They are pop as far as the crowd adores their music! Recommended tracks are: “Bring Me the Sun”, “Broken Mirror”, “Don’t Touch the Sky”. This band is awesome, and they are worth checking out!

Jyväskyläläinen For Selena and Sin julkaisi debyyttinsä tarkalleen kaksi vuotta sitten, ja tuolloin bändin melodinen, paikoin rokkaava musiikki herätti pienoisia lupauksia kohtuullisen tarttuvasta naislauluvetoisesta metallista. Vaikka tuore Primrose Path kohentaa pienin askelein monessa suhteessa verrattuna Overdosed on You -ensilevyyn, kääntyy tason kohentuminen monin paikoin ikävästi tasapäistymiseksi ja -paksuuntumiseksi.

Valitettavasti For Selena and Sin on mielestäni kaiken kaikkiaan hyvin tavanomainen ja keskinkertainen yhtye. Hivenen keskimääräistä tunnelmallisempi ja rauhallisempi Rusty Rails Of Yesterday on harkitun ja merkityksellisen oloinen kappale, ja samaa voi sanoa Fall of the Leafen Tuomas Tuomisella ryyditetyn Broken Mirrorin kertosäkeestä ja muutamasta muusta yksittäisestä hetkestä. Erityisen heikkoja lenkkejä ei Primrose Pathin biisitusinaan mahdu, mutta valitettavasti sen enempää Annika Jalkasen laulu kuin itse sävellyksetkään eivät onnistu nostamaan sitä myöskään toivotun tarttuvaksi tapaukseksi. Primrose Path on ehdottomasti laadukas ja ammattimaisesti tehty albumi, mutta samalla kaavamainen ja paikoin hieman väkinäinenkin - esimerkiksi Psycho Loverin kohdalla tuntuu siltä kuin bändi yrittäisi epätoivoisesti saada kappaleensa rokkaamaan ja groovaamaan siinä kuitenkaan onnistumatta.

Aivan kuin For Selena and Sin olisi tyytyväinen yltäessään naislaulullisen, kevyesti rokkaavan metallin perusstandardeihin. Kappaleet ovat rakenteellisesti todella helppoja, ja vaikka tuotanto on debyyttiin nähden voimakkaampi, koetaan silläkin saralla yllätyksiä vain harvoin. Samaa voi toden totta sanoa myös sovituksista, sillä ainoastaan Rusty Rails Of Yesterdayn helmeilevä kitaranäppäily ja kertosäkeen taustakitaramelodia sekä Summer Hillin alun kitaratapping-kuvio jäävät mieleen näkemyksellisinä ratkaisuina. Vielä kun Kylie Minogue -laina Confide In Me kuulostaa lähinnä laiskalta ja tylsältä, jää Primrose Pathista enemmän pettymyksen kuin onnistumisen jälkimaku.

Když poslouchám novinku kapely For Selena And Sin, v porovnání s prvním albem mám pocit, že každé musela nahrát jiná kapela. "Nové album zní víc tak, jak bychom chtěli hrát naživo", dozvěděla jsem se. Tedy dobrá, Selenu jsem sice naživo neviděla mockrát, ale musím znat, že živému projevu kapely se nové album skutečně blíží mnohem víc.

Pro mě má album "Primrose Path" dvě části - před "Psycho Lover" a po "Psycho Lover". První část lze hodnotit dost vysoko, skoro ze všech skladeb by tady mohly být hity. První "Countdown To The Stars" je perfektním otvírákem rockového alba, naproti tomu z balad "Rusty Rails" a "Horst" člověku běhá mráz po zádech, a "Broken Mirror" a zmíněná "Psycho Lover" jsou zase energické pecky, které na koncertě nechají jen málo lidí sedět.

Zajímavá je skladba "Confide In Me", kterou v roce 1994 nazpívala KYLIE MINOGUE. Přestože se mi původní verze celkem líbí, muzikanti ze Seleny jako by jí dodali něco, co jí chybělo.

Ve chvíli, kdy píšu tuhle recenzi, vzniká o patnáctset kilometrů severněji videoklip k prvnímu singlu, právě "Psycho Lover", která je podle kapely nejlepším "vzorkem" hudby FSAS. Já se do ní zamilovala na první poslech, tak uvidíme, jak si povede v hitparádách...

Druhá část alba je trochu slabší - "Don't Touch The Sky" a "Summer Hill" snad nejsou špatné, ale tak nějak se mi slévají v jednu a "Five Days In A Row" nejsem při nejlepší vůli schopná si vybavit, když na to přijde. Úroveň konce desky pak aspoň trochu zvedá poslední "Sister Sunset", která zase ukazuje tu lepší stránku Seleny.

Novinkou oproti albu "Overdosed On You" představuje hlas zpěváka Tuomase Tuominena (FALL OF THE LEAFE, NOUMENA), který si s Annikou zazpíval zhruba v polovině skladeb. Rozhodnutí přizvat k nahrávání dalšího zpěváka hodnotím jednoznačně kladně - hlasy zpěváka a zpěvačky spolu výborně ladí a písničky pak zní zajímavěji, než kdyby zpívala Annika sama.

Pokud bych měla alba FSAS porovnat, "Primrose Path" vás mnohem spíš zaujme na první poslech, zatímco "Overdosed On You" si musíte poslechnout několikrát, než objevíte všechno, co skrývá. První deska je metalová, druhá rocková. Přitom se ale nedá říct, že by jedna byla lepší a druhá horší. A pokud ano, tak to ukáže čas.

Jyväskyläläisen For Selena and Sinin toinen albumi on nimetty kryptisesti Primrose Pathiksi. Tuon nimistä biisiä kun ei kiekolta löydy ja jää muutenkin vähän hämäräksi tämä neilikka-bisnes.

 
 
 
 
Kiperää on myös bändin musiikin tyypittäminen. Melodisessa soitossa on mukana elementtejä niin metallista, rockista kuin popistakin. Perinteisesti näitä naislaulajien johtamia särökitarabändejä on tyydytty nimittämään goottimetalliyhtyeiksi, mutta nyt tämä johtaisi pahasti harhaan.
Primrose Pathilla yhtye on halunnut suoraviivaistaa soittoa ja panostaa koukuttaviin kertosäkeisiin. Liike näyttää kannattaneen, sillä biisit soljuvat vaivattomasti ja melodiat jäävät välittömästi hengaamaan nuudeliin. Koukkua piisaa eikä levyltä ylipäätään löydy selkeitä täytebiisejä.
Annika Jalkasen laulu toimii pääsääntöisesti, parhaimmillaan jopa lumoaa, mutta täydellisyyttä rikkovat korkealta ja kovaa tulevissa nuoteissa äänen pinkeäksi ja ohueksi venyminen.
Kauneusvirheistään huolimatta Primrose Path on osoitus vahvasta tyylitajusta ja sävellyskyvystä. For Selena and Sinissa on huikeaa potentiaalia, jos bändi onnistuu säilyttämään tämän tekemisen tason.

The second album by this Finish gothic rock band, following the excellent Overdosed on You, released back in 2007. They have a highly successful formula of laid back verses full of atmospheric keyboards, with the guitars kicking in for the soaring choruses. It certainly suits Annika Jalkanen’s pure, emotional voice. It kicks off ith ‘Countdown to the Stars’ with a super catchy chorus, ‘Rusty Rails of yesterday’ (great title) is wonderfully anthemic, ‘Horst’ and ‘Colour My World’ are more symphonic, while ‘Broken Mirror’ and ‘Don’t Touch the Sky’ have powerful male vocals in the chorus that provides a nice contrast. Fans of Kylie Minogue and Angtoria will recognise their excellent version of ‘Confide With Me’. This is a really good album for goth and melodic rockers who like band such as Katra, Lacuna Coil, Paramore, and Delain, 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Phil)

Finnish melancholic rockers will release their second album on 19th October 2009. Primrose Path shows heavier and more energetic side of the band, without forgetting the original sound of FSAS. Album features 12 new songs, including Kylie Minogue cover song "Condife in Me". Album was recorded and mixed at Studio Underground, Sweden. Band worked with producer Pelle Saether;

"After first album we spend a lot of time on the road. When we started to write material for the new album, we wanted to get the same wibe to the songs that we have when we play live. Pelle was in the same page with us and the album sounds extremely good!" , says band guitarist Martti Pohjosaho.
