I'm thrilled to announce my fabulous agent has sold my darling Roman in a two book deal to Kate Seaver at Berkley Heat!

The books are scheduled for release in 2011.

Here's the scoop from Publisher's Marketplace:

Christina Phillips's HIS FORBIDDEN PRINCESS, in which a Roman centurion leads an invasion into Cambria, and the druid princess who both defies and enthralls him, to Kate Seaver at Berkley Heat, in a two-book deal, by Emmanuelle Alspaugh at Judith Ehrlich Literary Management.

And here's a slightly longer blurb!

As Rome conquers Cymru, Centurion Maximus falls under the spell of ethereal Druid princess, Carys. Charged by his Emperor to eliminate all cursed Druids before they rise up against their new masters, Maximus is unaware of her heritage and is determined to possess her and discover where she and her kin are hiding from the might of the Eagle.

Despite knowing he's the enemy of her people, Carys is fascinated by this commanding foreign invader, a barbarian who displays unexpected honor, and willingly meets him in secret to satisfy her desire for sexual pleasures. But when Maximus captures her heart her loyalties are twisted and freedom from Rome is no longer her single-minded obsession.

As the summer solstice approaches Aeron, the High Druid and ex-lover of Carys, gathers the dark gods to crush the enemy into oblivion, the Druids into submission and Carys to his will. Maximus and Carys must defeat the encroaching devastation, overcome the prejudice of their warring gods and opposing cultures and find a way for their love to survive.

Now I just have to write book two!!!

Today I'm visiting with the lovely Kealie and ladies over at The Menagerie, where I'm chatting about drinking, thunderstorms and the last movie that made me cry (won't be going to see that one again, and I'm completely avoiding going to see My Sister's Keeper too!!!)

Please welcome my special guest today, Susan Macatee, whose novel, Erin's Rebel, was released yesterday through The Wild Rose Press!

Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog, Christina.

Thanks for stopping by, Susan. Can you tell us a little about your book, Erin's Rebel?

Erin's Rebel is the book of my heart
I started work on it about 7 years ago, when I decided I
wanted to try writing romance. It's a time travel romance. The heroine, Erin Branigan, is a modern day journalist who's transported back to the year 1863 and meets Will Montgomery, a Confederate infantry captain. She'd been dreaming about him for months before this happened, done research and found his grave. Of course, by the time she meets him in the flesh, she's already in love with him.

I love time travel romances. How did the idea for the plot come about?

I've always loved reading time travels. The idea of going back and actually meeting people from the past is a fascinating idea. I also love the idea of reincarnation which plays a big part in this story. And being a Civil War reenactor, I love the period. As a result of the reenacting, I also know a lot about not only the history, but the small historical details that make a story like this seem real to the reader. So, I combined the Civil War with time travel and came up with the plot.

I love sale stories (ok I am just nosy!!) so can you tell us about your road to publication - and your call story?

This sale story is a tale of sheer determination. I queried countless publishers, got one positive response asking for the partial, then waited 2 1/2 years to get a rejection. In the meantime, I'd been entering Erin's Rebel in contests, took third place in one, fourth in another, but didn't even final in the rest. I did, however, as a result of all the contest critiques, find I had some major problems with the plot. So, I went back and replotted the story, scrapped about two-thirds of the original manuscript and rewrote the rest of the book. By the time I got that rejection, I had a whole new story. I submitted the partial to another publisher, who requested the full, but declined it after about five months. I finally submitted a query to The Wild Rose Press, got a request for the first three chapters, then shortly after that a request for the full. Within three months of submitting, I was signing the contract.

What a wonderful sale story! We are all about the love here, so please share your fave books, movies, TV shows or current fantasy squeeze (it's all in the line of research!)

Well, I read so many books, including romance, sci-fi, historical, mystery and suspense. Too many to name, but one of my favorite romance authors is the late Dawn Thompson. I particularly loved her paranormal/historical romances. They were a great influence on my writing. As for sci-fi, my favorite authors of the moment are Elizabeth Moon and Catherine Asaro. Catherine's books combine romance and sci-fi. Yum! My all time favorite movies, include Glory, Gettysburg, A League of Their Own, all the Back to the Future movies, Braveheart, Cold Mountain. There are more, but these are ones I love to watch again and again. As for TV, I love all the Star Trek series. Yes, I wear my geek badge proudly. LOL. I don't get too attached to current TV shows because most of them are so short-lived, but one of my favorites is House. I spend most of my TV time during baseball season keeping up with my team, the Philadelphia Phillies. Love to watch those athletic hunks step up to the plate. LOL. And the only fantasy squeezes I have would have to be the heroes in my stories. I fall in love with each and every one of them.

The Back to the Future movies are great. What are you working on now?

Several projects, actually. I have another book contracted by The Wild Rose Press, also set during the Civil War. The title is Confederate Rose and we'll be starting edits on it soon. It's the story of Katie O'Reilly, an Irish immigrant who disguises herself as a man to fight in the Confederate army. She meets a Virginia gentlemen, Alex Hart, who just happens to be spying for the Yankees.

I'm also working on a couple of short stories. One's a ghost story for a Civil War romance anthology, involving a Civil War reenactor and the ghost of a Civil War nurse. And I've finished the first draft of a Civil War set vampire story.

I'm thrilled to share that on Friday night I accepted representation from Emmanuelle Alspaugh of Judith Ehrlich Literary Management for my darling Roman!!

I'm so excited. Emmanuelle has been at the top of my dream agent list ever since she read the full of my first full length paranormal romance a couple or so years ago, and made some very insightful and encouraging suggestions. I'm deep in revision mode at the moment, tightening up the manuscript after our chat on Friday but still can't quite believe it's all true!

Thai'd Up - Helen Hardt

Today I'm interviewing Helen Hardt, who has been a very busy lady this last year with several releases from The Wild Rose Press, and an upcoming release from Ellora's Cave. Today we're chatting about Thai'd Up, the fabulously titled Scarlet Rose Destination Pleasure which is scorching up the bestseller charts!

Helen it's great to have you back on my blog. Can you tell us whether being published is how you imagined it would be? Given the chance, are there things you'd do differently?

Here's the weird thing -- I don't feel much different at all, LOL. I'm still learning. I'm stilling finding stuff in my work that makes me say "I can't believe I did that!" I don't think a writer is ever 100% satisfied with her work. I know I'm not. I started out with a small press, The Wild Rose Press. I have six contracts with them, and no, I don't think I'd do anything differently. My success there gave me the courage to submit to Ellora's Cave, and I now have a contract there, which is exciting. I'm still holding out for New York with my longer works. But honestly, I've only submitted a few times. At my first writers' conference, key note speaker Susan Wiggs said she stopped counting rejections at 140! I'm not sure I've even gotten fifteen yet. So I need to bite the bullet, grow that thick rhino skin (I'm the biggest thin-skinned wuss you'd ever want to meet, LOL) and SUBMIT.

I know what you mean about a writer never being 100% satisfied with her own work! Do you write every day? Do you give yourself daily/weekly goals?
With all the other stuff I do, I found myself putting my own writing on the back burner. In May, some friends and I challenged ourselves to write everyday. I personally decided to do it in the morning, before emails, blogs, etc., with a goal of at least 1K. It has worked well, and I wrote over 26K last month. I'm continuing this month.

I'm terrible at procrastinating on the Internet! Now to your writing process. Would you say you're a panster or plotter?

Such a pantser! Though for my recent western historical novella, The Outlaw's Angel, I wrote a synopsis first because the submissions call required it. Do you know something? I love writing from a synopsis! I actually know where I'm going! It certainly gives writer's block the boot. Of course, then you have to write a synopsis, LOL, which I normally don't do until a project is complete.
When I get stuck and I need to brainstorm, I use the W plot method, which you can find at my friend Karen Docter's website: www.karendocter.com. It's a plotting technique for pantsers ;).

What keeps you motivated when the writing gets tough?

Tough question! Friends who understand. A wonderful husband who thinks I'm the world's greatest writer ;). He always makes me feel better about myself when I get a rejection.

Supportive hubbies are the best! Is there any advice or light bulb moment you'd like to share about getting/being published?

Don't stop writing! Once you're published, all of a sudden there are loops, blogs, promotion. Your time can easily get eaten up. Always put family first, then writing, then the rest of the stuff.

That's great advice. Do you have critique partners (CPs)? If so can you tell us how you met up and your process?

Yes. I have five CPs altogether. Three of them are local, and we blog together at The Colorado Vixens (www.coloradovixens.blogspot.com.) I met Tricia Leigh Wood first. We joined Colorado Romance Writers at the same time. Then we hooked up with Monica Kaye a few months later. A few months after that, Viola Estrella joined us. We meet and exchange pages every two weeks. We all have different strengths, so our sessions are always helpful.
I also have two online CPs who I met through freelance editing -- Cari Quinn and Paty Jager. Cari is a huge help with my erotic romance, and Paty with my historicals. Paty and I exchange weekly and Cari and I every two weeks. It all works well!

I love my CPs too! Tell us about your latest release. What can we expect?

Thai'd Up is my latest erotic romance and is available at The Wild Rose Press, Wilder Roses. Here's a blurb and excerpt (R):

Blurb:

Visiting Bangkok to do an interview for her employer, Heidi Clarke is intrigued by the wild and raucous nightlife. When a handsome and engaging stranger, dressed as the Phantom of the Opera, offers to escort her into a BDSM club, she's too curious to refuse. As the man behind the mask introduces Heidi to new and exciting pleasures of the flesh, she can't help but wonder who he is. Or if she really wants to know.

Excerpt (R):

“I know how to keep my submissive safe. And I know what will feel good to you. Trust me.” His velvet voice slid over her, caressing her with its whiskey-like smoothness.
Trust him? Should she surrender to his power over her? God, she wanted to. He wouldn’t hurt her. She was positive. It was in his voice. In the way he looked at her. The way he kissed her. Her pussy still pulsed from her orgasm. She wanted more. Taking a deep breath, she turned over onto her stomach.
“Your skin is the color of moonlight.” His fingers trailed down her spine over the small of her back to her bottom. He squeezed the taut flesh. “Such a beautiful ass.” He pressed a finger to her anus. “Tell me, teerak, has anyone ever fucked you here?”
“N-no.”
“Would you like me to be the first?”
“I...I don’t know.” Anal sex? She had never considered it. Ever. Hadn’t given it a thought. So why was the image of him pounding into her dark tunnel making her so hot she couldn’t see straight?
“I’d love to take you there.” He smoothed his finger along the crease of her cheeks. “So lovely.” He sighed. “But for now, I have a promise to keep. Put your hands above your head and grab the bars in the headboard.
Heidi complied, her body quivering in anticipation. A soft whispery caress fluttered across her back.
“Silk, my angel.” He bound one wrist to the bars of the headboard, then the other. “Now get on your knees.”
She tucked her knees forward, her head buried in a silky black pillow. Another feathery caress flowed over the cheeks of her ass.
“Will you trust me, teerak?” Phantom’s breath puffed against her hips.
“Yes.” Tingling sparks threaded through her body. “I trust you.”

Oh whoops. Another week slipped by without me noticing! I'm a very bad blogger. But I've been busy writing, so I'm pleased about that and have just hit the 12k mark on my new novella. Currently the hero is misbehaving and my heroine is enjoying every moment.

I don't have a proper title for it though, which is a bit distracting since I usually need that in place before I can really get stuck into it. It does have a theme title, which isn't the same but appears to be working so I'm going with that for now. But I really want a rocking one before I sub, that sums up the story and catches the eye.

I've also now got my own group over at Coffee Time Romance. Yay! I'm a Coffee Corner Author!!! I'm so excited to have my own space over there. I haven't done much with it yet but I'm gradually moving in!

Kaye has a great post about research today, and it was very timely for me since last week I started a new story and realised there was a lot I didn't know about the period.

Anyway, for some odd reason today I gave my hero a codpiece. And the more I thought about it the more I wasn't sure he ought to have one. So I had a bit of a Google and stumbled across this most delicious site, Renaissance Dancewear which kept me enthralled with the history of this intriguing article of manly modesty.

But the bit which totally cracked me up was a snippet from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales", when apparently men's shirts became shorter thus ensuring all their unmentionables were on public display. I've pasted it in below for your educational pleasure!!!

Alas! some of them show the very boss of the penis and the horrible pushed-out testicles that look like the malady of hernia in the wrapping of their hose, and the buttocks of such persons look like the hinder parts of a she-ape in the full of the moon. And moreover, the hateful proud members that they show by the fantastic fashion of making one leg of their hose white and the other red, make it seem that half of their privy members are flayed. And if it be that they divide their hose in other colours, as white and black, or white and blue, or black and red, and so forth, then it seems, by the variation of colour, that the half of their privy members are corrupted by the fire of Saint Anthony, or by cancer, or by other such misfortune.

Today's the final day for Red Wolverton Howling! Can't wait to find out how it all wraps up. It's been such a blast being involved in this story and I'd like to give a huge Thank You to everyone who's joined in!!

In other news, I'm chatting at the lovely Allie Boniface's blog today and if you get a moment we'd love to see you over there!

On Saturday I attended the 2009 RWA Romance Roadshow in Perth. What a fantastic day! The Roadshow Committee did a wonderful job of organising everything. We were lucky enough to have Kelly Hunter, President of the RWA and published with Harlequin Mills and Boon Modern Heat/Sexy Sensation, Keri Arthur, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Riley Jenson, Guardian series, and Denise Rossetti, erotic romance author published with Ellora's Cave and Berkley Sensation.

The day could have been tailor made for me, since Keri took workshops on world building, on how we as authors can successfully create an alternative and believable environment. I find setting a challenge and have to constantly remind myself to layer in the landscape/climate etc so this was invaluable for me.

Keri also did a question and answer session on writing urban fantasy/paranormal and all the nitty gritty bits of the publishing world which was completely fascinating!!!

Me and Keri Arthur (not that I'm name dropping here...)

Then we had the Sealed Section with Denise which
proved very popular for some reason!!! We discussed language, the differences between erotic romance, erotica and pornography and the importance of vivid sensory detail and deep emotional point of view. Her tips were invaluable.
It was also great to chat about publishing in general with authors who've experience in both e and traditional publishing marketplaces.

There were also tutorials on deep point of view, effective story dialogue and romance heroes, lots of spot prizes and goody bags!

Me with Denise Rossetti (OK I AM shamelessly name dropping!!)

It was fantastic to meet up with so many other writers, and it sure didn't feel like a whole year ago since the inaugural Roadshow when I was so inspired that I subbed Foretaste of Forever to The Wild Rose Press!

Here's a pic of me with my good mate Nikki Logan, who a few months after last year's Roadshow signed a two book contract with Harlequin Mills and Boon Romance! Her debut book is out in the New Year and I can't wait to read it!

Destined to Mate - C.A. Salo

Please welcome my special guest today, C.A. Salo, whose recent release from The Wilder Roses, Destined to Mate, is racing up the bestseller lists!

C.A, please tell us about yourself!

..

I’m a mom and sister, living off Florida’s Gulf Coast with my son and several pets.

I like to write anything from sweet to HOT, HOT, HOT with a happy ending.

When not writing, I home school. Exploring interesting ideas and places has become a norm for us.

Travel, reading, photography, coffee, and wines are also a favorite for this diversified Gemini.

Can you tell us a little about your book?

As a Chimera, half lioness/half human, Alexis Xanthis, has never released the beast within. Until she meets Lykan Alpha, Morgan LeVey. Being near him triggers a powerful need to mate, but is Morgan strong enough to dominate her feline side and still handle the human half with a gentle hand? And will the powers that be allow it?

How did the idea for the plot come about?

I remember a Chimera being mention in one of the Hercules – The Legendary Journeys TV shows on television in the 90’s. So I looked a Chimera up, (isn’t the web a wonderful tool.) LOL, and learned a little more about the Greek mythological creature before writing her a story of her own with some of my twists added.

I love sale stories (ok I am just nosy!!) so can you tell us about your road to publication - and your call story?

LOL, no prob. I was first published in 2006 with a couple small e-publishers, who shut their doors for one reason or another. I have two best sellers with Whiskey Creek Press Torrid. And decided to rework Destined to Mate and send her in to The Wild Rose Press.
Silly me sent her into the wrong line, but the editor loved Destined to Mate so much, she send it to the wilder side of TWRP. *Grins* and here we are today. The reviews coming in are awesome…so yeah…I’m PSYCHED!!

We are all about the love here, so please share your fave books, movies, TV shows or current fantasy squeeze (it's all in the line of research!)

Hey I’m all for research! LOL. I am such a diversified person. I love so many things, but I have to say my favorite movie of all time is Highlander with Christopher Lambert & Sean Connery. If you look beyond Connor being an immortal, you’ll see it’s also a love story between Connor and his beloved Heather.
Books, well there’s just so many of them. But the first book that really caught my temptation (shall we say) was written by the wonderful Beatrice Small. It was the first “hot” book I read, and you know, I’m embarrassed to say, I can’t remember the name of it *blushing* If I had all my belongings unpacked from our recent move, I’d be able to tell you in a heart beat, but I read it over ten years ago. SORRY!! But I can still remember the exact scene I just wrote about *Big Grins / Wiggling Eyebrows*

TV Shows – I’m a total Sci-Fi nut. Seeing as how they just took my Battle Star Galactica off and Fringe just had it’s season ender, I’m waiting for Sanctuary to start up again.

Christina: Oooh yes. I LOVE BSG. Don't get me started!!!

Current Fantasy Squeeze – Hehehehehehe, J Well, That’s being plotted in my head at this moment.

What are you working on now?

I’m drawing up an outline for a sequel or two to Destined to Mate, and am self editing the sequel to A Slave’s Way Out.

Quickies
What's your fave:

Time to write: Mid-morning
Song: Anything Rock and Roll
Pair of shoes: Sneakers
Food: Sushi
Place (on earth or off!): On Earth - A Quiet place in the woods or where I can sink my hands into the soil / Off Earth – anywhere the closest star ship would like to take me. J
Guiltiest pleasure: Chocolate
