WEST VIRGINIA FILMMAKERS GUILD SUMMER MEETING AND WORKSHOPS

SUTTON – State filmmaking takes center stage on June 5 – 7, 2009 when the West Virginia Filmmakers Guild (WVFG) invites media professionals, enthusiasts, students, performers, and anyone with an interest in film and media to the annual workshops held at the beautifully-restored Landmark Studio for the Arts at 401 Main St., Sutton.  On Saturday, June 6, this year’s workshops and presentations will include:

o 1:15pm Tax Incentives for the Film Industry

– Pamela Haynes and Jamie Cope of the West Virginia Film Office will provide a brief overview of the tax incentive program for the state film industry.  Local and regional filmmakers are encouraged to attend this free presentation.

o 1:30pm Workshop - Directing Actors

– Presented by actress and stage director Susan Marrash-Minnerly, this workshop demonstrates techniques to facilitate a constructive collaboration between independent makers and aspiring talent to produce sharper performances for a better film.  Narrative filmmakers are encouraged to bring in a 2-3 page unproduced script segment for possible use in the workshop; some audience members may be asked to perform as actors.

o 3:00pm Discussion Panel - High Definition Video Production

– A discussion regarding Hi-Def video production, post-production, and the continued emergence of the medium.  Moderated by filmmaker Jason Brown, the panel will include award-winning filmmaker Paul Harrill (www.lovellfilms.com), and media professionals Debra Keddie and Richard Warmuth of Wheeling’s The Walkabout Company, LLC (www.gowalkabout.com).

“We are excited about offering these top-notch filmmaking workshops in West Virginia,” said Terry Lively, WVFG President.  “And we’re proud of our members who have helped build the foundation of our industry over the last quarter century.”

Admission to the Directing Workshop and HD Panel is $10 for non-members, and $5 both for Guild members and/or students with valid I.D.  Meanwhile, a reception will be held Friday, June 5, in the lobby of the Elk Hotel – located at 200 2nd Street – for all visiting filmmakers and returning Guild members.

Returning, new, and prospective Guild members are urged to attend an executive meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Landmark Studio.  New opportunities for filmmakers and upcoming events will be discussed, as well as organizational business.

Guild members will also have the opportunity to screen works-in-progress Sunday afternoon at the Landmark for discussion.

Paul Harrill – a native of Knoxville, TN – is a filmmaker whose short works include: “Gina, An Actress, Age 29” which won the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival; and “Quick Feet, Soft Hands” – a co-production with ITVS (Independent Television Service) – which premiered in competition at the Nashville Film Festival in April 2008.  Harrill – who has been an Artist-in-Residence at the University of Tennessee and a fellow of The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts – is also known for his popular weblog Self-Reliant Film (www.selfreliantfilm.com), which champions small-crew, low-budget, and regional filmmaking.  Harrill received his M.F.A. in Film & Media Arts from Temple University in Philadelphia, and has taught Digital Cinema Production at Virginia Tech since August 2006.

Debra Keddie has managed all documentary, broadcast, and non-broadcast media projects for The Walkabout Company, LLC since 1992, when she oversaw the production of two weekly series for youth, which aired on WV PBS.  Recent broadcast productions include “The Historic National Road - The Road That Built the Nation,” which received a 2006 regional Emmy nomination for Achievement in Writing, and the Videography Award for achievement in production.  She is currently the producer for the first two episodes of “New Mountain Living,” a new series that will be broadcast via WV PBS and other regional PBS stations. Keddie also serves on the Board of Governors, National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Ohio Valley Chapter - WV, OH, IN, KY).

Richard Warmuth has served as principal scriptwriter, director, and editor for all media projects from The Walkabout Company, LLC since 1987, and received a 2006 Emmy Nomination in Scriptwriting for “The Historic National Road - The Road That Built the Nation.” The recipient of the Videography, Hermes and Accolade awards for excellence in production, Warmuth’s work also includes 45 episodes within the company’s two weekly series for youth that aired via WV PBS, and three long-form broadcast documentaries for the company.

You know how it is...

You work your tail off all week,
having to deal with the crap life throws at you on a daily basis.

So naturally, when Friday night finally comes,
you just KNOW you’re dying to head out on the town to see a movie
with questionably liberal rhetoric about the war and potential Presidential assassination
within the context of a university environment… and STUFF!

Yeah… that’s right. I went there...

And now… you get your chance!

Attend the April 24 screening of “The Paradigm Shift”
at the Keith Albee Theater in Huntington,
then afterward, go to your nearest bar and play
“’The Paradigm Shift’ Drinking Game.”

Here’s how you play…

FIRST, attend the screening at 10pm and pay EXTRA CLOSE ATTENTION!
Every time you hear the phrase “Paradigm Shift” during the movie,
that’s one shot you MUST take at any bar of your choosing AFTER the screening.

SECOND, go to any bar of your choosing AFTER the screening.
(Pssst! It works so much better if you’re 21 or older with a valid I.D.)

Now Let’s Review:

You hear somebody say, “Golly gee whiz, that sure is a 'Paradigm Shift.'”
Later at the bar… knock one back.

“I always feel safe with the ‘Paradigm Shift’ in the house.”
Time to knock one back.

“Uh-oh, I think I’m gonna’ sneeze… ah… AH… ‘Paradigm Shift!!!’”
You guessed it! Knock… one… back!

BONUS!!!
Every time you hear the word "Teacake" during the movie,
take TWO shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But enough of that crapola. Where does this crap happen???

WHAT: “The Paradigm Shift” at the Appalachian Film Festival
WHERE: Keith Albee Theater, 925 4th Ave., Huntington, WV

THE PARADIGM SHIFT Screens Friday & Saturday in KENT, CT!!!

Folks, I have to tell you…

If you’re not attending the Kent Film Festival in Kent, CT in any capacity this year, and you live much closer than I do (I live in West Virginia), then you’re really missing out on a terrific experience.

Friday at 11am, our award-winning short film THE PARADIGM SHIFT screens in Community House I in a very diverse block of short films.

Saturday at 7:30pm, we screen again in Community House II.

And if you simply must miss our Saturday screening, I’ll withhold my scowls for anyone who goes to see Route 30, which screens at the same time.  I saw this film in Des Moines, IA back in November, and it’s a very warm and lively comedy set around the Gettysburg, PA area along U.S. 30.  And the writer/director John Putch is a very straightforward, friendly guy.

Another nice guy, filmmaker Dan Mascucci, who I met briefly in Illinois in 2007, has his new short Against the Wind.  Also of note, former Temple undergrad Tim McDermott’s senior thesis film Call Waiting - a pleasingly absurd comedy which features both Mary Sharples & Ashlee Elizabeth Bashore from our film - is also screening.

Nestled along the Housatonic River on U.S. 7 in western Connecticut, Kent and its surrounding areas are places where I will gladly return… particularly with a different economy and a different bank balance.

Otherwise, how can you willingly pass up the crème brûlée at the Fife’n Drum Restaurant, or an hour spent in either the town’s used bookstore (Richard C. Lindsey, Bookseller or Kent’s literary landmark, the House of Books.

The festival directors Frank and Patrice Galterio are very friendly and approachable, as is the rest of the festival staff.  And both filmmakers and attendees alike seem to genuinely enjoy themselves at this festival, which successfully mixes the formality of the festival experience with the intimacy of its environment.

Dare your New England friends RIGHT NOW to make the pilgrimage this weekend to the Kent Film Festival.  And I double-dog dare you to pass this message on!

“THE PARADIGM SHIFT” ACCEPTED TO SCREEN IN NEW MEXICO AND CANADA

The short film The Paradigm Shift -- directed by Jon Barr and written/produced by Sam Holdren -- has just received another double dose of good fortune.  The film has been accepted to screen in competition as part of the upcoming White Sands International Film Festival  in Las Cruces, New Mexico in late April, and then again at the ReelHeART International Film Festival  in Toronto, Canada in late June. This marks the 8th and 9th festival acceptances for the film, along with the very first acceptance to screen outside the United States.

The Paradigm Shift is about an activist history professor (played by H. Michael Walls - 12 Monkeys) who assigns his class to design a plan to assassinate the President.  The repercussions are immediate for everyone involved, particularly upon the professor’s teaching assistant (Nicholas Wilder - Flogging Margaret), a timid young man whose reluctance to choose a side plants the young man right in the middle.

The Paradigm Shift has previously won the Audience Award at the Main Line Film Festival  in Wayne, PA; Best Student Narrative at the Peace On Earth Film Festival  in Chicago, IL; Best Student Film (College/University) from the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival  in Des Moines, IA for Barr and Holdren, as well as Best Actor from the same festival for the film’s lead actor H. Michael Walls.

More information, along with trailers, is available at the OFFICIAL MOVIE WEBSITE.

As always, congratulations to the cast and crew!

Hello Folks,

Check out what I am personally dubbing as a timely (and accidental) response to the recent news stories involving Delegate Jeff Eldridge of Lincoln County, West Virginia.

Eldridge, as some of you may have heard, is making national headlines for pushing legislation to have the sale of Barbie dolls banned in West Virginia on the grounds that the dolls serve as an unrealistic role model for young girls.  (This is not a joke!)

You can read more about it right here:
http://dailymail.com/News/statehouse/200903030085

Unfortunately, while his intentions may be noble, Eldridge sets back his own cause through his lack of common sense & foresight.  Worst of all, it is yet another embarrassment for West Virginia on the national stage.

The following response - however incidental - is by someone who can be considered an actual feminist icon.

FYI, the song in this video is a tune featured in the new Broadway-musical adaptation of the movie "9 to 5."

Best,
Sam Holdren
