Wassup my good peeps?

I found this little oasis in the middle of the trees somewhere south of Seattle and north of Portland. It's cold up here but warm enough to play basketball during the day. I am a bit of a hoopaholic these days joining my first team in some five years. Put up 36 on some teen wolfs last week. I still have a lot of work ahead of me but I'm feeling better than I have in years. I don't know if this is an act of love to tell you I am going to Hawaii so I won't say it. Dang, too late you figured it out. Yea while the brisk pacific northwest turns frigid I am lucky to fly across the ocean to a tropical environment. I am at a conference right now leading worship with Rootdown. There is no better place to be than God's will and often times it's not what we do but who we are that defines that. I feel like I've been challenged with this thought head on to put oneself in front of the other. I wish I had more success at it or maybe I don't and that's why I fail but I wish I had more desire to to do it. I guess that's my defining moment, not the songs I sing or the words I write but the life I live... for all music flows out of life like leaves on a tree. My attempts apart from Him are like dry leaves, fragile and tossed by the wind. I hope that as you put others first this week you will step into the kingdom because it's not far away. It's here and it's now and to live in harmony with God and community is the best music.

We have written a handful of new tunes, the live show is as good as it's ever been and we just need to record the new material. I hope you stick around so you can hear them or come out to a show so you can see them live. Afterall, our next show is in Hawaii :P

Awwww,
Paul

Hi Paul,

I bought Kingdom Come at your concert in Hollywood a couple of weeks ago and love it. I really like how you included the bible verses as reference to each song. So I finally got around to actually looking those verses and had a question I was hoping you could help me with.

In Bring Me Back the song ends with the line "... where the old man wishes it was over now there's less candles on a cake as we get older" I've read the lyrics over and over and the prodigal son story and I'm still a bit confused.

Again I really appreciate the references to go along with each song. Its not very often you get to know what exactly an artist was thinking when they were writing.

Thanks,
Laura

My reply

thanks Laura for coming to that show in Hollywood earlier this month. This is a question I have been asked before and it's one of my favorite lyrics on the record. While I was recording this my Grandfather was in a nursing home and I got to spend some time with him while he was in there. He didn't want to be there. He'd actually try to escape by waiting close to the door and wheeling out when it opened. I don't blame him. He and my Grandma were married for over 60 years and he missed home where she was!

Death brings forth life. Think about the food we eat. Whether it's fruits or animals it's a necessity that they die to sustain the life we live. Think about Jesus when talking with Peter shortly after telling him He was the rock in which He would build his church (Matthew 16:18) he told him "Get behind me Satan!" (verse 23). Why would he utter such words? Maybe it was because Peter didn't realize the Son of Man must suffer and die in order that He could give us life.

The song 'Bring Me Back' is a song everyone can relate with because we have ALL fallen and gone astray. No one is perfect. The verses are a confession to that and the chorus is a proclamation to our victory in Him. (By Your Love / By your grace)

The bridge is a picture of transformation. Out with the old and in with the new. So instead of me saying I feel happy or I am a new person why not paint a picture that makes the listener happy and new?

To me that means an open and honest community of people who love God and each other (where there was cold stares now there are hello's hi how you doin?)

It means a family living and loving God together. A family brought together in the light. A couple building a foundation not by daring to cross the lines of God's commands but living in the truth Remember truth or dare? (no truth but only dares lead to homes that are built on these ruins)

Where the past is forgiven (monsters hiding in the closet now there are no more nightmares or the one who caused it)

Where the old man is dead and the new man is alive. And though we physically age we are merely getting closer to the other side of eternity in which we will live in fellowship with God and others forever (where the old man wishes it was over now there's less candles on a cake as we get older).

To me that last lyric relates to the prodigal son based on his decisions. I'm sure when he left home, spent all his money and woke up in a pig sty he felt hopeless sort of like an old man who just wants his life to end. But just as the prodigal son returned home we have the power to walk in the Spirit and come home to a family who cares.

You know when you get to a certain age and there's not enough room to put all the candles on the cake? So they just put 5 and say it represents 50! Or you get a wax figurine in the shape of the number 50. In any case it's okay because it's a celebration that you are alive and maybe one year closer to heaven. It'll be nice to see my Grandpa and Grandma again on that side of eternity. They are probably dancing if he isn't playing golf.

Thanks for asking
Paul

For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for it.

--You say: "It's impossible"

God says: All things are possible...
(Luke 18:27)

--You say: "I'm too tired"

God says: I will give you rest...
(Matthew 11:28-30)

--You say: "Nobody really loves me"

God says: I love you...
(John 3:16; John 13:34)

--You say: "I can't go on"

God says: My grace is sufficient...
(II Corinthians 12:9; Psalm 91:15)

--You say: "I can't figure things out"

God says: I will direct your steps...
(Proverbs 3:5-6)

--You say: "I can't do it"

God says: You can do all things...
(Philippians 4:13)

--You say: "I'm not able"

God says: I am able...
(II Corinthians 9:8)

--You say: "It's not worth it"

God says: It will be worth it...
(Roman 8:28)

--You say: "I can't forgive myself"

God says: I FORGIVE YOU...
(I John 1:9; Romans 8:1)

--You say: "I can't manage"

God says: I will supply all your needs...
(Philippians 4:19)

--You say: "I'm afraid"

God says: I have not given you a spirit of fear...
(II Timothy 1:7)

--You say: "I'm always worried and frustrated"

God says: Cast all your cares on ME...
(I Peter 5:7)

--You say: "I don't have enough faith"

God says: I've given everyone a measure of faith...
(Romans 12:3)

--You say: "I'm not smart enough"

God says: I give you wisdom...
(I Corinthians 1:30)

--You say: "I feel all alone"

God says: I will never leave you or forsake you...
(Hebrews 13:5)

Let our focus be, not on the negative things that we can say, but the positive promises that God has said and given to us.

On the first day of tour the people in Bend said to me, cool freestyle flow and good luck down in Cali. On the second day of tour we traveled to Ashland and played a really fun show and hung out in a pool with friends. On the third day of tour we stopped in Roseville and Tim turned a year older. Happy birthday Tim.

On the fourth day of tour we were in Benecia and Scott got Jackson in a headlock. On the fifth day of tour we were in Pleasanton hanging out with Jeff and VCC at a pool party! On the sixth day of tour we rocked VCC and said bye to Rachael Lampa. On the seventh day of tour we were in Visalia and 3k peeps showed up thanks to KDUVs radio signal.

On the eighth day of tour we went to Pismo Beach and went out to Denny's (again) in SLO. On the ninth day of tour we were in Santa Cruz singing at Bethany University. On the tenth day of tour we went to Hollywood and got some mexican food in the hood. Mucho Gusto! On the eleventh day of tour we played in Huntington Beach and ate some sushi on fire on main street.

On the twelfth day of tour we were in Chico and it reminded us of Eugene but more like Old School. And on the thirteenth day of tour we played in Redding and Hunter found out that Tim really likes ranch dressing. And on the last day of tour we played in Salem and sang songs of redemption like the Wailers wailing.

Thanks to all who came out and sang songs with us! We had a great time. We hope to record some of the new songs soon such as Debbie, I Wish and some more. Thanks to Will Foster for being our photograhper/sound engineer. Hunter Gray for playing drums and being such a rad dude!

Our next shows: Eugene and Corvallis, Oregon

God is love,
Paul & Rootdown

Aloha friends!

Tonight we had a superb experience in Visalia. How many people can say that? We can. Visalia has one of the coolest looking Denny's too. Not the guy, the restaurant with the legendary grand slam. KDUV FM had us play their annual freedom celebration and it was pretty much amazing. We have had a great road trip thus far playing in Bend, Ashland, Sacramento, Benecia, Pleasanton and now well Visalia. Tomorrow we are off to Pismo Beach and then heading up to Santa Cruz before turning back around and heading down to Hollywood and Huntington Beach.

I am instant messaging in spanglish to a fan from Chile on facebook right now. Should I say that on MySpace? My bro Jackson and I were searching youtube for some current videos of the tour and came up blank on the dance we do in our set :( But I did come across a really good cover of From Sunrise To Sunset by AJ Rafael.

Check it out:

We are also going to be in Chico, Redding, Salem and Eugene soon so if you live near we'd love to see ya at the shows. Oh and Hawaii - October? YES!

Buenos Nachos,
Paul

It was pretty cool at Spirit West Coast last week after the show everyone started singing me happy birthday at midnight:

That was really nice... but do you ever feel awkward when people are singing you happy birthday in public places? Maybe it's because everyone's attention is on you and they are singing. Idk but it's always fun to start singing happy birthday to someone you don't know at a restaurant with a group of people as a joke.

Shawn McDonald was in Eugene a couple weeks ago playing after the Eugene Emeralds game. He invited me up to sing the song we wrote together, "Take My Hand". We used to sing that song together all the time in Eugene playing at Starbucks and a handful of other cafe's around town. I needed to brush up on the lyrics though cuz as you watch this you'll see I forget the beginning of my verse. Lol. Make sure you check out Shawn's music if you haven't already, it's amazing!

It baffles me to think Jesus lived on earth without committing one sin. Do you ever wonder why God would risk our salvation on Jesus life? I mean just one little sin and it's over. And the bible says He was tempted like us in every way and was still without sin. How did he do it? He spent a lot of time connecting with the Father. He'd get away in solitude and pray. He lived in dependence on the Father. When I'm struggling to walk in victory over temptation I realize it's because I have stopped spending time with God. I have stopped reading the bible, or been in fellowship or prayer. You and I can't do it on our own. We need to follow Jesus model and submit ourselves to God and being disciplined to hear from Him. From sunrise to sunset and maybe more importantly from sunset to sunrise we need to fix our eyes on Him. Just like our bodies need food our spirits need His word. It's not what I've done but who I've become and I can't change myself I need something else. I need God. I need to focus my lens on who He is more and more.

There is two ways to thinking about God. The first is by piecing together an idea of who He is by what happens to us. The second is to study His word and stand on what it says. It's hard not to do the first. But if what happens to us defines who God is than He is always changing. One moment He's good and another He's bad and that's not true. Sometimes we put our hope in things that we shouldn't and like bubbles they pop right in thin air. Let's get in tune with who He is and He can reveal what is temporary and what is for real. Our emotions will rest on the goodness of God knowing that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. I may not understand it now but I hope to understand Him a little more through it.

In awe,
Paul
