bonjour!

it's a sunny blue-tinted fall day in new york city, and my thoughts can't help but turn back to this marvelously kickass weekend at smith college. my good friend liz willis produced a truly gorgeous evening of music on friday, which was filmed by my dear new friend erika mcgrath, documentation of which you should be able to check out on youtube pretty damn soon.

for those who came out to see the foliage and the music on friday night at the smith college alternative rock festival, you know that it was a once-in-a-lifetime line-up. for those of who didn't come, you seriously fucking missed out. if you've followed me at all, you've probably heard me mention my friend noah harris, the neoromantic piano balladeer, who opened the festival alongside his charming wife adriel's band the Wandering Sons. i urge you to listen to them both at myspace.com/noahharris1 and myspace.com/thewanderingsons; they have that impossible combination of being both wonderful people and inspiring artists. just do yourself a favor and order his cd, because as noah said friday night: "natti has great taste in music and he likes my music, so you should buy it." i daresay he's right.

i was really floored by the audience's reaction to my music.  it is such an indescribably great feeling to see so many people get what i'm doing and so obviously appreciate it. to know that you're responsible for giving someone new music that they can latch on to and love is gratifying as hell, because i know from experience how good it feels when i find myself on the receiving end. being an independent artist lets me build intimate shows with people i respect on my own terms, but it also means that i don't have a bunch of suits out there pushing me. obviously, i'd much rather just have appreciation generate organically and trust that you all will just spread the love and spread the word. as BETTY from the L Word said on saturday night (when we were unexpectedly asked to play a second night): "keep it going, keep it growing." by the way, betty is also now admittedly a big fan of my music, which makes so much sense, because if you knew me in high school, i was totally known as the kid who listened to "lesbian music." and damn proud of it, fuckers!

audience love and giving hugs to new and old fans alike, and signing tits and the like aside, I felt it to be just a great honor to open for the superlative Amanda Palmer - who gave a remarkably powerful performance, even while on the rag, such a trooper... - as well as Mr. Brian Viglione who ended up crashing the party to add some guitar, humor, and a couple classic rock throwbacks. I was convinced at the end of Amanda's set that she is one of the best songwriters around today, all hyperbole aside, and that if she does not rise to/surpass regina-spektor-esque levels of international recognition, there is something horribly wrong with the world.

...my vocalist dara eagle (who you'll find in my top 12) was on the rag as well, but you wouldn't have known because she made me so proud crooning her heart out in that irridescent Oona's outfit we nabbed off mass ave. one week prior. thanks to lily lamboy for the midol complete. i think that helped too.

for those of you who don't know, I often play with a fantastically ferile self-trained drummer named Ace Salisbury, whose profile you'll also find in my top 12. coincidentally, Ace has also engineered/mastered/played on all the tracks you hear on my myspace. he's basically my hero. love him as you love me. also, i understand that some of you may have developed brief but heady crushes on my bassist and cellist. their names are Jesse Taub and Louis Dimeglio respectively, and they have girlfriends. i know that's disappointing, but they're also very young, talented and sponttneous folks, so don't lose hope. it should also be mentioned that my manhood is significantly larger than theirs. i'm just saying.

before i go to next topic on this blog, i MUST give shoutouts to the wonderful women of Northampton who put me and my ragtag band up each night.
Lily Lamboy: thank you for your knowledge of local panini-making businesses and songs from ancient Disney musicals. you are probably one of the only people i can comfortably big-spoon for an entire sleep cycle.
June Millington and partner Ann: You rocked out for the world long before I was even born, and I'm really thankful that you could rock my world so much today. Thanks for taking us in at 4am and showing us such great warmth, love, fire, and not to mention a wonderful breakfast.
Jane Jones: You're so cool. Erika and I want to be you. I would love to brunch with you and your charming co-op members the next time I find myself in western mass.

NEWS
this just in. there is talk of a music video for the anorexia song. all i will say is that shooting begins wednesday and we're all hoping for the best. expect a benefit show at Pianos sometime quite soon to fund the damn thing; it should be a blast. to get an idea of what's to come, please take the time to view this silent-film clip by the soon-to-be director of my video: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/6503. brilliance.

for those of you in boston, i'll be giving a donation-only performance at the lilypad at 9pm this coming Friday, october 19th to support Gil Aharon's beautiful grand Kawai. i've always loved the sound and feel of the thing, so i've enthusiastically agreed to play for its benefit. i hope to see all of you bostonian/cantabridgian folk there. i will also debut what i feel to be a kickass new song. it should be a wonderfully intimate little gathering.

so, before i get off to booking my ass for the rest of the season, i've decided to share with you a couple of good ideas for enjoying the sublime pleasures of autumn. they're included below my sign-off.

oh, and on a last little musical note, i've got a couple little new songs that i'm hiding away but i'm feeling quite generous so i'd be glad to send them to anyone for a couple of bucks should you send me a message with your address.

Love
natti

sublime fall pleasures

1) if you're in boston: go to the Toscanini's on main street in Central Square and get yourself a thing of their cinnamon ice cream. then, walk north along mass ave til you get to the harvest. buy some fresh berries if you can afford them and then turn right at the parking lot. proceed down the street perpendicular to mass ave until you get to broadway, at which point you'll turn right until you reach the garment district. do yourself a favor and pick up something that you would otherwise buy for halloween and simply wear it the following day. you'll feel so good about yourself that you'll call nstar/coned/whatever and switch to solar/wind energy. then you'll feel even better.

2)if you're in new york city: take the l to bedford and have some coffee at cafe 1980 between north 7th and 8th. you'll notice a 10 dollar baked apple dish that will look really fucking tasty. don't buy it. just walk to 88 north 11th and try a bunch of shit on in the dressing rooms at beacon's closet (purchase optional). return home with a loved one, shnuggle them (interpret this verb at will) and make said apple dish by your damn self because it will taste better and save you money. you'll feel so good about your finances that you'll call nstar/coned/whatever and decide to spend the extra few bucks to switch to solar/wind energy. then you'll feel even better.

With the advent of two new recordings on the myspace, some questions may naturally arise; and the ones that may not, I will artificially raise:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q: Why have there been three different recordings of Hedon's Playground up here?
A: Why, that's because the song keeps undergoing modifications. And maybe I'm just like my mother; she's never satisfied. (at 2:45, my drummer can be heard saying "third time's a charm"... I thought he was referring to the take, but, I don't know, you decide...)
Q: OMG, like why don't you totally have like 10,000 friends on myspace?
A: Well, I haven't had this page for a while, firstly. I am but a young lad, and essentially my myspace gig history IS my solo gig history. voila. Secondly, and more importantly, I don't friend people who a) I don't know, b) won't respond when I send them a message asking why they've friended me. This is both idealistic and practical: if you want to send myspace invites out, it's such a bitch to parse through every single person on your friends list, and even more annoying when you don't even know if they give a shit about you/vice-versa. I am indeed friendly, and do not bite (unless you're into that), it's just that I'd like to know who my "friends" are. It's cuddlier that way.
Q: What's this "vurv" thing I may have heard about?
A: This brilliant woman, Liz Willis, is all about promoting indie music and is throwing together a massive undertaking which will SELL SONGS ONLINE FOR A MUCH LOWER PRICE THAN iTUNES (i think it's like .69 instead of .99, and sweet underground indie artists like mook, the blow, me, etc. will license their music on the site). She's calling it "vurvmusic" and the website will be vurvmusic.com. I am with Liz 100%, who is doing great things for the indie scene. more on this later.
Q: Is nattivogel.com up yet?
A: Kind of. Go see for yourself.
Q: Why did you write a song about anorexia?
A: Why the hell not?
Q: Do you have an album out yet?
A: Si, senor/senorita, I have a 5-song EP as of now. It sounds fucking tight, just hit me up and I'll send one to you. They're 5 bucks a pop and have sweet color cover art. A longer LP thingamajig is going to be out soon.
dear beautiful humans,
i am back in new york from a most intense and lovely recording session (in retrospect, it feels so mundane to call it such) with the talented and energetic Ace Salisbury at his studio basement in a most prominent victorian mansion amidst the urban decay of chelsea, mass.
literally from the moment i arrived this past thursday at 1:06 in south station to about six hours ago, i rehearsed, performed take after take with drums and bass, added multiple spontaneous harmonies, and melded my mind with ace's in a way that produced a great batch of six recorded songs.
they are being fully mastered as we speak. i will be sure to post some treats from the batch once i have them at my ready. i hope you will all enjoy.
yours,
natti
so, about a month ago, this chick eamiled me all like "hey, can I interview you?" and so I make her tea and chat her up a storm, play her a tornado, and here are the results of the climate of our meeting and the unusual sprituality of her writing:
Tonight at the Regina Spektor show, Amanda and Brian filled me in that an email I had gotten from Emily (webmanagerlady) the day before meant that my cover of "My Alcoholic Friends" had been chosen by Amanda to stream on their website under the to-be-created Covers section. So there it will lie in the interweb in all its three minutes of glory --i changed the key, added more cantabridgian-bostonian friendly lines, and an extra couple of modulated choruses. you can find it soon at www.dresdendolls.com/closet/covers/index.htm !! enjoy.
love. N
I'm spending $30 on Fung Wah to come play this amazing show at the lilypad in cambridge this coming Sunday. I want to see all of you there, but it costs $90 to cover the space for the evening, and the only way I'm gonna even avoid getting negative profit is if all of you people come and bring every single friend you have. ---
the incomparable Ben Miller and the lovely Sarah Schofield will be there as always to welcome you lovely folks into the spectacle that is a Vogel (in this case Vogel-Eagle, check out Dorothy Eagle's myspace) show. THERE WILL BE THREE NEW DEBUTS, violin and piano and voice and new songs by natti, and tons of donuts coffee lemonade and soft pretzels for all with an incredibly affordable cover charge of $5. be prepared to be amazed.
i do this all for you.
love, NaTTI
