This Month at CHROMA we'll be hosting a special Listening Party from 9pm-10pm, Curated by Paul Martino. This month's listening selection is Raiding The 20th Century by DJ FOOD. Check out what Paul has to say about his CHOICE CUT>>>
Cataloging popular music is impossible. Over the past decade and especially so since the creation of the magnetic tape and the digital boom, attempting to filter any of this and gain insight on the evolution would take years and even then you would run out of time. Mashers, cutters, producers, DJs and bootleggers however do their best to make sense of this problem by using songs played over other songs blending into each other merging into a new beast while obtaining the nuances of itself to remain whole.
Before through the effective use of turntables and a mixer a DJ could blend with effective skill. Now with digital technology, songs can be completely remade anew. Effective use of the mash-up can allow someone to make sense of the chaos of the musical scene. With so many songs it is impossible to listen to them all. Taking pieces of them all though, we can do a fine job of attempting this.
One group, DJ Food, effectively attempted to make sense of cataloging popular music. To do this he released a compilation in 2004 to form a 40 minute epic album of mash-ups, tape manipulations, and turntable megamixes. It was more a nice mix rather then a history lesson. Listening to it at the time you got a sense that this was something special.
Afterwards DJ food got a hold of Paul Morley's book "Words and Music" who attempted to do the same thing DJ Food was doing but in words rather then music. It was here that DJ Food decided that he would create a history of this genre along with a history of sound appropriation. Paul Morley was found by Strictly Kev (a piece of DJ Food) and the two would collaborate on merging Paul's book with the original mix while adding in some new work to keep it fresh. It was here that the catalog and history of popular music was completed.
