50 Great Voices:
Invitation to Send Your Nomination for Yulia
ABOUT 50 GREAT VOICES
October 5, 2009 - In January 2010, NPR will launch a year-long exploration of 50 of the great voices in recorded history. With the series, we're hoping to discover and re-discover awe-inspiring vocalists from around the world and across time. Through archival material, interviews and music, NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered will spend the year delving into the lives and legacies of these voices. But we don't know yet whose voices they'll be.
Between Oct. 5 and Oct. 16, we're asking you — NPR listeners and readers — to tell us who in the whole world possesses the most beautiful, singular voice you have ever heard. Leave your picks, along with a sentence defending each choice and a link to an audio clip if possible, in the comments at the link below, or email GreatVoices@npr.org
LEAVE YOUR PICKS AT THIS LINK: http://www.npr.org/templat..es/story/story.php?storyId..=113301632
We'll compile your nominations, along with those of our panel of experts, academics and public-radio critics. At that point, we'll name the nominees and ask you to help us winnow them down to the 50 great voices we'll profile in the coming year. We're relying on you to remind us of those voices we may have forgotten or never got the chance to hear; those voices that may sound strange to Western ears; vocalists silenced by politics or history; the singers who are only really embraced by critics and those who are heroes of the everyday listener. No voice is too outlandish, too old or too compromised. It's All Voices Considered here, and we can't wait to see and hear what you send us.

“Come and hear the ‘new voice’ of Yulia!” “Although Yulia holds the New Zealand record for being the first female solo vocalist to achieve two back to back number one hit albums in New Zealand, she has not rested on her laurels. Yulia has been busy taking her ‘voice of rare beauty’ to all new levels of beauty and power.
After many months of intense training with Ukrainaian Opera coach Valeriy Maksymov, Yulia’s first live concert performance on 29th Aug, 2009 resulted in a lengthy standing ovation in Kerikeri, New Zealand. The Dargaville show on 30th Aug, 2009 was sold out one month prior and left those attending recognising they had witnessed an International phenomenon.
Robyn Downey of the ‘Dargaville Times’ cites in her front page review of Yulia’s performance "Yulia, whose stage presence would have wiped out many an International singing A-lister, gave a performance described by accordionist and MC for the Sunday afternoon concert Kevin Friedrich as "magical and beautiful".
In attendance at the concert was an executive from the International touring agency Showcase Entertainment Group. CEO Layton Lillas has just signed Yulia to a NZ touring contract for a slot which has been actively sought after by NZ record industry executives in the Popular Classical Crossover genre.
The months of intense ‘Russian and Italian methods’ daily voice training has resulted in the discovery of a greater than four octave vocal range, which is still yet to reach it’s peak. This makes the now seasoned live entertainer and recording artist one of the most versatile and highly awarded voices to be developed to represent New Zealand on the global music scene. Yulia is currently focused on introducing her music to the UK for the first time.
The previously untrained 18 year-old incarnation of Yulia was considered to be a Contralto. Now 23, the newly re-classified (and for the first time refined and professionally trained) ‘Mezzo Soprano’ voice of Yulia is sure to delight all of the old fans who drove Yulia’s album sales to six times platinum status. The new voice of power is bound to win Yulia many new fans.
Evidence of this is already showing with 15,000 new fans discovering Yulia over the internet in 2009. Yulia is currently the number one unsigned artist on MySpace NZ and she is the number one NZ pop artist on internet chart Reverbnation which has over 400,000 musicians listed including Madonna and Michael Jackson. As I write this Yulia sits on the independent Reverbnation (Worldwide) Pop chart position at 134 with Michael Jackson at 148 and Gwen Stafani at chart position 129 after her home demo, a cover version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Ben’ was released to friends and fans as a tribute to her recently deceased ex-boyfriend Ben Thompson.
Yulia is currently unsigned and is seeking either to find a new record label or to raise funds from her live concerts to buy her master recordings back from Sony Music NZ and release the sought after albums in the UK.
Months of preparation has gone into an all new concert programme of some of the most beautiful female solo vocal repertoire. ‘The Passion of Russia’ programme includes such favorites as Dr Zhivago’s ‘Somewhere My Love’. Fans of Celine Dion and Lara Fabian will be delighted by ‘Yulia’s version of Lara Fabian’s beautiful song ‘Adagio’.
The uplifting and poignant Christmas Tour “A Christmas Romance’ with Brendan & Yulia also features another New Zealand favorite with John Rowles. The show which will feature beautiful romantic duets and solos will also reconnect the New Zealand public with popular TV1 personality and ex-weatherman Brendan Horan. Known as ‘Mr Sunshine’ or ‘Mr Personality’ on the corporate entertainment circuit, Brendan brings a natural charm that has endeared many of NZ’s top CEOs in corporate entertainment.

YULIA NEWS
Female Solo Vocalist Yulia MacLean (formerly Yulia Townsend) has been in training with Ukrainian Opera coach Valeriy Maksymov over the last 12 months. She has recently been re-classified as a Mezzo Soprano with more than a 4 octave vocal range and an ability to master some of the World's most demanding repertoire. Yulia has mastered two more languages during 2009 and now sings fluently in English, Russian, Ukrainian, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin and Maori.
The latter part of 2009 has resulted in a number of sellout shows with Dargaville selling 618 tickets in the 500 seat Town Hall main theatre. See concert review at: http://www.stuff.co.nz/auc..kland/northland/2821353/Ma..gical-afternoon-at-town-ha..ll
Last weekend's "Yulia & Friends" concert resulted in a long standing ovation from an audience which was astounded by a remarkable live performance. Yulia and her manager Glyn plucked two local singers from obscurity and developed them in just one day to put on their best performance.
On the strength of her current performances winning standing ovations and accolades Yulia has been signed to a touring agreement by Layton Lillas from Showcase Entertainment Group. Yulia's first national tour event with Showcase occurs this Christmas with the debut of ex TV1 weatherman come entertainer and very special guest star John Rowles in 'A Christmas Romance' with Brendan & Yulia. Four dates are set so far and more may follow. Event link: http://www.showcasegroup.c..o.nz/events.php?id=anytime..4a652db869e18
Also on the radar are Yulia's new September shows "The Passion of Russia" and "An Intimate Afternoon with Yulia" which debut in Wellington. Event link: http://www.pscevents.org.n..z/yulia/
Yulia directly contributed to helping raise over $700,000 for NZ charities in 2008. The planned concerts aim to raise $37,000 for Presbyterian Support Central. The recent sold out 'Concert at Karaka' raised over $54,000 turnover for Rotary Papakura.
Yulia has also been developing her technological footprint and is amongst the first musicians in the world to successfully broadcast concerts live over the internet using Ustream TV, Twitter and Facebook gaining 13,000 new fans (across all platforms). Yulia is currently ranked #1 (unsigned) Classical Opera and Vocal on Myspace and 14th (worldwide/classical) on www.reverbnation.com which has over 400,000 musicians ranked including Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Who would you like to see paired with who?
Who would you like to see Yulia sing with during that period?
Who are your personal favorites and why?
If you'd like to be involved in a focus group providing feedback on this and (or) you'd simply like to share your opinion, I welcome you to contact my email with your information.
