Masquerade Meliah Rage – Masquerade (Screaming Ferret) 2009

1.    Lost or Found (7:57)
2.    Chosen (6:15)
3.    History Will Tell (6:47)
4.    Dreamer (5:09)
5.    Seeker (6:58)
6.    Hour Glass (5:06)
7.    Masquerade (6:00)
8.    Last Rites (4:56)
9.    Whatever it Takes (7:32)

2009's "Masquerade" is Meliah Rage's eighth release and marks the return of the original Meliah Rage line-up, including vocalist Mike Munro. With Munro returns the dynamic songwriting of early Meliah Rage. On my first listen I found myself enjoying this album. One more quick pop into the car stereo and I was hooked. This is without a doubt the best Meliah Rage. The songs on "Masquerade" offer a bit of diversity, but stay within the walls of classic power metal, like old Metal Church, Vicious Rumors and, of course, Meliah Rage. Basically, Meliah Rage have always walked a fine line between classic heavy metal and U.S. thrash metal.  However, with "Masquerade" the songs are a bit longer and slightly more progressive than in the past. That is not to say that "Masquerade" could be labeled prog metal. No, this is still just 100% American, heavy, power metal. "History Will Tell" is a prime example with it's mid-paced groove and crushing riffs. Some of these songs have a heavy vibe like the classic Bay Area thrashers. "Chosen" especially game me that ‘tallica vibe with it’s quick pace and double bass assault. "Dreamer" and "Whatever It Takes" also have that fast, thrash feel. The title track has an eerie Alice Cooper feel to it, while "Seeker" had a melancholy, doomy vibe. Metal Church vocalist Ronny Monroe makes a guest appearance "Last Rites". Monroe even contributes the lyrics for this particular song. Monroe was a great addition to Metal Church and sounds great here as well.

"Masquerade" marks the return of original vocalist Mike Munro. Munro's voice really brings the classic vibe back to the band. While he probably isn't technically the best vocalist in the world, he brings a ton of attitude and his own charisma. That charisma is part of what gave Meliah Rage their charm on those early records. Munro also brings something new to Meliah Rage. His lyrics seem to be focusing on life from a Christian perspective here, which is something this band has never focused on before. The fist few lines of "Lost or Found" make the stance crystal clear, “why do you hide? Why do you lie? Can’t you see that He knows all and all? All that we do, all the way say. All shall kneel down on our judgment day”.  "Masquerade" is just an all around great metal album, from the music to the lyrics.

MELIAH RAGE "Masquerade" (2009, Thrash Metal)

ENGLISH VERSION (Para versión en español, leer más abajo)

The years pass and Boston’s Heralds are still alive and well releasing CDs. For this new album Darren Lourie fills the bass that Jesse Johnson left, Paul Souza also left the band... and Mike Munro is back!!!.

“Masquerade” shows a genuine, mature Meliah Mage with extended compositions (6 minutes average). The trademarks of their sound are very benefitiated thanks to the stong and solid production of Rich Spillberg – In my opinion the best that the band had in all their career – every instrument is perfectly audible. The six string tandem of Tony Nichols/Jim Koury thrash, harmonize, make twin guitars, also “counterpoints” and as never, remember some elements of their first two efforts but with a 2010 sound and without cloning the past.

“Chosen” and “Dreamer” had a little taste of “Kill To Survive”, “Lost And Found” and the galloping “Whatever With Takes” remember some moments of “Solitary Solitude”. Darren Lourie is a solid and precise bassist, benefitiated thanks to the compositions and the strong production. Never before I’ve listened so clearly this instrument on a Meliah album.

And Mike Munro not only decide to come back, here he brings us his best performance of his career. Specially on “Seeker” during the first two minutes and the same happens with the calm and cadence that with the other guys achieved on the title track.

“Hour Glass” is more catchy, with hook and many colours and guitar resources. “Last Rites” comes with a surprise, Ronny Munroe (ex Metal Church) sings on it. The guy shines with an excellent performance. Anything else to add?. A great album, the tracks are amazing, much less darker than “The Deep And Dreamless Sleep”, and perhaps it’s a work that for a listener that it is not familiarized with Meliah Rage requires more spins for the lenght of the songs and some complex structures.

While other bands go and came back, they still are here with their distinctive sound, heavier, a sort of thrash (Not 100% thrash) with a strong Metallica and metal of the eighties influence, but the enchant that they offer here shines.

Unfortunately the world are still missing them... nothing has changed. Some brilliant things in life remains for a few ones.

10 out of 10 Stars Hands Down! The best Metal Album of the year.....I take that back,  The best Metal Album of the past 2 years. Better than Megadeth's "End Game" and yes better than Metallica's "Death Magnetic". This IS the BEST Meliah Rage Album EVER! I loved Death Valley Dream, but this has far passed it up. "Masquerade" is now in my classic collection, along with "Rust in Peace" and "Master of Puppets". IT is THAT GOOD!

Lets start with the Artwork: AWESOME! It's nice to see a band care about their album covers again. It's not over the top, it's perfect. Pamzy Love did a Fantastic job! (I hope to see this on a new Meliah shirt)

Bring'n Back the Thrash: Chosen & Last Rites are Instant Classics. Solo's are top notch. I would'nt expect anything less from Tony & Jim. These guys can shred. When the fury started in "Chosen", I was happier than a kid in a candy store! I was like "YESSSSSSS"!! Finally, "Real Thrash"! Bang'n Thy Head and Horns were flying. The same with "Last Rites" applies here! Ronny from Metal Church sing'n his ass off! Bad Ass!

Seeker is an Awesome song! Mike is one of the only singers I know in Metal that has complete control over his voice. Hetfield only wishes...

FINALLY somebody wrote a REAL ALBUM again and that someone is MELIAH RAGE! A lot of effort & detail was put into this record and you can tell from the opening round with "Lost or Found".

Putting "Masquerade" up against "End Game" and "Death Magnetic":
We all know Metallica and Megadeth can play fast, but it seemed like that was the point. "We can still play". Well no shit! The problem is, they forgot how to write. I listened to "Death Magnetic" for about 3 days and "End Game" for about a week. I can't listen to them anymore. They're good, but not classics. Nor Megadeth or Metallica have drive anymore, and you can tell.
Meliah Rage has the drive and ambition and every sound you hear from "Masquerade" is from the heart, not from the bank. It's great to hear some real music again and I can't thank you guys enough.

2 Horns way way up!

Meliah Rage - Masquerade (2009)

I normally wait until I have heard a new album a few times before I give my opinion. There's always that initial excitement with a new release that may sway my thoughts. I have listened to this album a whopping two times and decided to write this "review" because I have to tell you about this record.

2009's "Masquerade" is Meliah Rage's 8th release all together, and it's one of their very best. After 2 albums with vocalist Paul Souza, original Meliah vocalist Mike Munro was welcomed back into the fold. I still remember hearing about that awhile ago and grinning from ear to ear. It's really like a dream come true for me. Meliah means that much to me.

I had a teeny bit of apprehension upon receiving this CD because the last 2 with Souza were lacking some essential elements. "Barely Human" was a decent return to form, but "The Deep And Dreamless Sleep" sounded like it was called in. So would the dynamic songwriting that graced the classics "Kill To Survive" and "Solitary Solitude" return along with the voice that defined the band? In this fat guy's opinion, hell yes it did!

What the listener is given with "Masquerade" is nine really solid tracks that honestly pick up where "Death Valley Dream" left off. However, I think this album blows DVD out of the water. The band sounds hungry and ready to regain the momentum they began with their earlier records.

The production is very impressive to me. Producer Rich Spillberg managed to capture the essence of the band. Every instrument can be heard clearly and the album isn't overbearing in the volume department, an unfortunate phenomena which many new metal releases suffer from. There are no unwanted surprises on this album, no experimentation, just straight ahead, no holds barred energy.

The songs that were posted on the Meliah Rage Myspace page represent this album very well. In fact, at this moment, my favorite songs on the album are "Lost Or Found" and "Hour Glass". Maybe that’s because I played them over and over again during the last couple of days waiting for my CD to arrive. :) I mentioned no surprises earlier, I lied. There are a couple. First Ronny Monroe's (Metal Church) performance on "Last Rites" is PHENOMENAL! He sounds alot better fronting Meliah than he does with Metal Church. He really gets to show his talents on that song. The second surprise is the almost classic Alice Cooper-ish sound of "Masquerade". While it's a song like no other they have released, it is still a real treat to listen to. The atmosphere is HUGE on that song. I think most will dig it, although some nit-wit metal fans won't understand it.

Overall, I am overwhelmed by Meliah Rage's "Masquerade" album. It is what I had hoped for and more. I just hope that the band continues with Munro at the helm because with him in the band, the guys are firing with all pistons, and to be honest, with that lineup I think they are untouchable in the metal world. The guys haven’t reinvented the wheel with this album, but they have created an album that should impress even the most jaded metal fan.

There are a few big name metal albums still to be released this year, but I have a feeling this one will be my top choice for this year.

Yes. It's THAT good.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

MELIAH RAGE REUNITE WITH ORIGINAL SINGER, BEGIN WORK ON ALL-NEW ALBUM

Throughout the course of their career, Meliah Rage has refused to let line-up changes derail or silence the mighty metal quintet from Boston, Massachusetts. And the group continues to live by this rule, as they've just announced the re-entry of the group's original frontman, Mike Munro. After singer Paul Souza exited the band late last year, a six-month search for a suitable replacement began, which led to a dead end. That is, until producer Rich Spillberg suggested that they should contact Munro, and get back to their roots. After being out of Meliah Rage for over a decade, Munro is back for more, joining band mates Anthony Nichols (guitar), Jim Koury (guitar), Darren Lourie (bass), and Stu Dowie (drums).

And in a twist of fate, the last Meliah Rage release to feature Munro, 'Death Valley Dream,' was recently remastered, with its release – July 29th - coming right on the heels of the announcement of Munro's return. To mark the album's reissue, a rare, never seen before video from that record is currently being re-edited, and will be posted on the band's website and Myspace page in the near future. Additionally, the Munro-fronted Meliah Rage is currently working on a new record with producer Spillberg (who has worked with everyone from Steel Assassin to Josh Grobin), at Red Devil Recording in Stoughton, MA, and should be on store shelves by early 2009. Keep your eyes peeled for the next phase of Meliah Rage, which promises to be one of their best yet!
