Looks like Pitchfork media has posted a video from a live recording I did of Colin Meloy. You can even see me in the background. Keep an eye/ear out for video of the Black Keys at the Crystal sometime soon. I recorded that this past friday.

Marty Crandall, Joe Chiccarelli, James Mercer and Me

The new record by the Shins, Wincing the night away, comes out this Tuesday.
I'm super excited, as this is by far the biggest engineering credit for me so far. These guys were great to work with and were about the farthest you can imagine from being Prima Donnae (or pre-madonna?).

I always marvel at the constant interplay and balancing act between composing and studio experimentation. Sometimes you get people recording songs before they've even written the lyric. To me this is nuts. It seems like the posture is: "Oh, I just come up with something at the last minute...whatever comes into my head."....Well, it usually sounds like it.....In my opinion, the best writing takes work and focus - even the songs that seem to come out easily require your attention and patience to get them down on the page. There are nuances in the music which have to be informed by what's going on in the vocal line.

Where I'm going is this: James came into the sessions pretty fully prepared as far as having the songs written. In fact he had already recorded at home some of the elements of each song - a vocal and a guitar part, the steel-drum-sounding keyboard part on Red Rabbits.....Yet there was also quite a lot of room - meaning openness and willingness on the part of James and the band - for experimenting with forms, sounds, rhythms and other elements.....

I have to say, having a lot of room for experimentation can also, for some folks, lead to getting mired in too many options. Producer Joe Chiccarelli [you have got to see his credit list; it's HUGE and varied] really kept things on track, getting the home-recorded tracks to mesh with the live-in-studio parts and all the guest musicians.

This past week, I've been doing some behind-the-scenes work as the Shins get ready for TV appearances and touring.....Look for some great remixes coming out soon, including at least one by DangerMouse.

Recording the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It was like doing an unplugged session with three cute little mice. You might easily walk right past them at the student union. They spoke in light little whispers like children in the library so that I had difficulty discerning when they were talking to me and when they were using their own secret language among themselves.
There were no outlandish costumes, no stage antics, just simple, delicate versions of three songs two guitars and Karen, who sat on stool and looked to us for permission to begin. This was an entirely different show than the one you saw later that night.
The mixes I did are going to the radio station knrk and will likely make their way around the net.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Live (unplugged) at Mississippi Studios. Portland OR. 4/26/06

Another great session yesterday with Michael Carothers and Paper Cameras at Mississippi Studios.
Michael is a prolific and unstoppable force. We've got about four to five EPs worth of material in the works with much of it nearing completion. Watch for the new EP Love is a Paper Camera in April.

Sam f**ing Henry rocks once again. He came in for a drum session on 3 songs and proved himself to be a total pro and one of the best drummers I've ever had the pleasure of working with. We got some crushing tracks. You may not know it from listening to his work with the Wipers, but Sam has serious jazz chops. With a lot of rock drummers, when you hand them brushes they just get confused or treat them like floppy drumsticks. Sam's just a natural musician.

First time I met and worked with Sam, he came in to play organ and snare on an album I was doing for Chris Newman (they were in Napalm Beach together). Later, when my favorite Portland songwriter Morgan Grace was looking for a drummer for some recordings we were planning, I called Sam and asked if he'd be interested. His reaction was not olny positive, but also kind of sweet. I think he said, "Yay!".
Well, now they play together all the time (Morgan's album The Sound of Something Breaking was out last year and you can hear tracks on her MySpace) and the three of us plus guitarist Geoff Clarkson are bringing out a tribute band that should set your socks on fire. More details on that later, but if you're in Portland, we'll be debuting at Sabala's on Saturday, June 10.

Just got done mixing and recording a live 'acoustic' set for Alex and Nick of Franz Ferdinand while they're here in Portland. These guys are about as nice and as charming as you could possibly ask for in a couple of Rock Stars. They played just a short set on 12-string and 6-string acoustic guitars - with Nick switching to piano on a couple of tunes.

They did, however, debut a brand new song: Lindsey Welles "I wish I could feel as good as you..." goes the chorus. I just wish I could be like David Watts...

Sorry, but I don't think I have clearance from Epic to post the song here.
