D3Publisher's Matt Hazard: Blood Bath & Beyond now has a date with both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. It will arrive on January 6 and 7 on Microsoft and Sony's platforms, respectively. Playing on the same camp featured in the original retail Matt Hazard game -- which parodied other games and featured an aging video game star -- Blood Bath & Beyond is a 2D shooter in the same vein as many classics like Contra and Bionic Commando.

Santa has added a layover in PlayStation Home to an already-packed holiday itinerary. On December 10, Sony Computer Entertainment is opening up a new PlayStation Home space that allows you to see Santa's workshop through the unique Home filter -- by which we mean it's now kind of eerie. The new Winter Wonderland space will allow you to interact with a vaguely Shatner-esque Santa Claus and elves like Robin Williams here, as you help the crew get all its preparations for Christmas done. Which means minigames!
There will be presents, of course, and a Photo Elf who will take festively decorated pictures of your Home avatar. You know, so you can always remember the time you saved Christmas.

Since the game's launch, LittleBigPlanet fans have only been able to create new levels offline. Over a year after initially promising a patch, Media Molecule is finally ready to unveil its online Create mode. Coming in the 1.21 "Leerdammer" patch, online Create works exactly as expected: you'll be able to invite friends to your Pod and work collaboratively on new levels. The most important improvement over the offline Create mode is the camera: each player gets his or her own camera, allowing them to work on different parts of the level simultaneously. For veteran creators, this should speed up the process quite significantly.

Other enhancements, according to Media Molecule:

  • If you play a level but do not complete it, a silver Sackboy medal will be displayed on the badge, to get a gold medal you must complete the level.

  • The LittleBigStore a bit easier to navigate and also to download things after purchase.

  • There is now an option to 'Auto-Reject' invitations from other players. The option is in 'Profile Settings'. If you have this set to 'On, no one will be able to join you unless you choose to 'Play Online'. This setting is not saved to your profile and needs to be set every time you play.

  • Sticker switches have been made more noticeable and give better feedback to the player when attempting to place stickers on them.

  • Checkpoints can now be activated using switches.

  • Race Gates can be made thin again!

  • You can now use the Sticker and Decoration tool and turn Sackboy around while in Customisation mode.

  • Added the QWERTY keyboard layout to the text chat menu.

  • Play, Create, Share scores have been removed – we thought these scores were a good idea but they never worked in the way we wanted them to. They may return one day. Maybe.

  • If you collect a key whilst playing a community level, you will now see the level unlocking for you once the level you are playing has been completed. You can also search for linked levels in the search menu.

  • Pressing L2 and R2 while browsing community levels can now show you the name or the author of each level on the earth as well as the Heart Count and Rating.

OK. I admit it. I'm a sucker for remakes of classic video games that I have played during my childhood years. And this one has me pumped about the possibility of getting my hands on a port of Sega's classic flight combat sim, After Burner. According to the OFLC and the Korean Game Rating Board, it's only a matter of time before our wish is fulfilled -- GamerBytes recently noticed that both groups have rated Sega's After Burner Climax for home console distribution.

According to the Korean board, the rating was applied for by Sony, leading some to believe the title's planned launch platform is the PSN. However, considering the multi-platform release of Outrun Online Arcade, I wouldn't be surprised if Sega decided to share the aerial dogfighting love with the 360 as well.

Consider yourself lucky!

You read that right. Sony's PlayStation 2, which the great majority of the world has been enjoying since 2000, is just now officially touching ground in Brazil. We're pretty sure it's been making its way into the country for many years by not-so-official means, but if you've gone the legit route, last-generation's game console king can be yours for just 799 Brazilian Real, which we're sad to say translates to about $461 in US currency. Yeah, we're expecting this to just fly off the shelves.

Not to be overshadowed by its bigger brother, a new PSP firmware has gone live tonight. Update 6.20 adds the ability to export video and photo playlists from an updated version of Media Go. However, the biggest addition to this update is the PlayStation Network Digital Comics Reader in a new "Extras" section of the XMB. While the Reader can be downloaded tonight, the service won't go live until December in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Japan will be getting a manga service slightly earlier. French, Italian, German and Spanish stores will follow in early 2010. Here's the full change log:

  • The importing of playlists from the Media Go application is now supported under [Video].

  • The importing of playlists from the PlayStation 3 system or the Media Go application is now supported under [Photo].

  • The [TV] category has been integrated into the new [Extras] category in the XMB menu. Compatible models: PSP-2000, PSP-2005, PSP-3000, PSP-N1000, PSP-N1005

But does it work? Surprisingly, it's not as bad as we'd expected. No, it doesn't provide the "fully 3 dimensional experience" that the company originally promised, but even they've ramped that down somewhat, now merely promising a "really there" effect. That's not exactly truthful either, but it is kind of fun, warping and bending things as if the system's image was projected into a spherical screen. You feel compelled to tilt the system side-to-side to look around corners, and while that's partly because you have to if you want to see the extents of the screen (otherwise the edges are obscured), it does actually boost the immersion factor somewhat. However, it also reflects and distorts anything in the room, so turn out those lights.
Worth $40? Not really. It takes what was hardly a svelte system before and turns it into a brick -- a lightweight brick, but a brick nonetheless. If you're the sort who uses your PSP exclusively at home (and mostly in the dark), is willing to drop a couple Jacksons for a bit of a toy, and need the ultimate in immersion it might be worth a look. That said, we're going to go ahead and guess that isn't you.

Update: RealView has stated that this device has been delayed until a January release. Your stocking, like your hopes, has just been emptied.

Sony has revealed via the official PlayStation blog that PS3 firmware 3.10, due "soon," will allow the console to communicate with social media site Facebook. The news comes on the eve of Microsoft's latest Xbox 360 Dashboard update roll-out -- which, among other features, introduces Facebook functionality to that platform.
Once firmware 3.10 is installed, the PS3 will be able to send updates to a user's Facebook wall indicating which Trophies they've just unlocked in games and what they've recently purchased from the PSN's PlayStation Store. Developers will have the ability to access Facebook functionality to send more detailed updates to the site from their games, and these options can (as was the case with Trophies) be patched into titles currently on shelves.
