So going back to my hitchhiking misadventures, the man who picked me up asked me at one point, since we were talking about music, if I’d heard of Alert the Medic. I had, but I’d never heard them. Or so I’d thought. I’d actually gone to school with them, except back then they were known as Rudy.

They had changed more than their name since I’d last heard them. I never cared too much when I saw Rudy, perhaps it was just that I wasn’t as open minded musically, and they weren’t playing what I wanted to hear. Whatever the cause was, I’d only heard them from the lobby of the amphitheatre on the waterfront in New Glasgow, while I was waiting for The Unwise, and The Salads to play.

After talking about them for a few minutes, we put on the record, and was able to listen to it straight through to Moncton. It was a lot better than I originally expected. It is the type of music that I would have originally referred to as “Generic Rock” except it actually sounds good. Unlike some other rock bands, who can pump out the same song again and again, and keep getting paid for it, these guys have an entire album of single worthy songs.

The album opens with Atlas, and lets you know that these Maritimers mean business. Leading up to songs like Let’s Hear it for the Symphony, and Hey Kid, to the Back of the Line. All these songs sound great on record, and have chorus’ you want to shout the first time you hear the song. I can only imagine how fantastic these songs are for a live crowd, especially if the audience is into it.

I’m proud to say that these guys are from my home town, and I’m going to be keeping my eye on them, and their shows.

Alert The Medic - We, The Weapon
By Ryan Conway
(09/30/09)

ALERT THE MEDIC - We, The Weapon We, The Weapon by Halifax natives Alert The Medic is fast-paced, heavy-hitting fun. With many memorable hooks that you would find in any hit pop song, with the exception that the lyrics are good. Very good.

Songs like Aid the Getaway, Hey Kid, to the Back to of the Line, and Stealing Scenery are fine examples of how to use repetition to captivate the listener. The verses of these songs can be so catchy you may find yourself doing plenty of toe-tapping or possibly even singing along. Even if you are in an office setting. Not that I have ever done that.

They can perform more light-hearted fare very well. But can Alert The Medic make a believable enough transition into tracks with a more serious tone? Yes. They can. Alert The Medic have a pretty decent flare for the dramatic.

"The Weatherman Pt. 2", for example, is well-executed. The piano used on the track really helps to build the song's dramatic atmosphere. The guitar shreds are a nice touch as well, giving the song some extra power.

Lead singer Ryan MacDonald, delivers a soild vocal performace throughout the album. His versitile vocal range only makes the songs all the more memorable. The shredding skills of guitarist Troy Arseneault also prove to be noteworthy as they provide the album with a little extra hard-hitting edge.

We, The Weapon is very solid overall. A good and very fun listen.

Alert the Medic to headline two Act Your Age tour stops in Cape Breton
By: LAURA JEAN GRANT - The Cape Breton Post
Date: May 27/09

GLACE BAY — Alert the Medic will have some brand new material to showcase during two performances in Cape Breton this week.

The Halifax-based rock band, which just recently wrapped up recording their next album, performs Thursday at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay and Friday at Strathspey Place in Mabou, as part of the Act Your Age all-ages tour, which is being supported by the province of Nova Scotia, Music Nova Scotia and the Bringing it Home Program. Fellow Halifax band, The Stanfields, will also perform both shows.
Alert the Medic bassist Matt Campbell said both bands really thrive on the live stage so the audience is in for some great nights of music.

“There’s a lot of energy. It’s just a lot of fun and it’s a really upbeat atmosphere,” he said. “We just like to have fun on stage and hopefully that kind of energy bounces off the audience and in return they can have some fun watching the bands as well.”
Featuring Campbell, Ryan MacDonald, Dale Wilson and Troy Arseneault, the Alert the Medic members grew up together in the small Nova Scotia town of Stellarton and have been performing together for years. The group’s self-titled album, released three years ago, earned them several Music Nova Scotia and East Coast Music Award nominations, including one in the CBC Galaxie Rising Star recording of the year category.
Alert the Medic will be performing tunes from that CD as well as playing new songs  from their soon-to-be released album recorded earlier this year in Toronto with producer Laurence Currie, who has worked with many successful East Coast groups including Wintersleep and Sloan and also produced Alert the Medic’s previous album.
Campbell said they’re eager to get their new project out there.

“It’s the first one since 2006 for us so we’re due. We’re looking at hopefully getting a single out by August and then a CD release in September so it’s kinda crazy and hectic trying to work all those details out right now,” he said. “To me, where we’re at now, this is the most complete sounding album that we’ve had to date.”

The band is also thrilled to be headed back to Cape Breton having performed here twice last year, opening for Canadian rock legends Our Lady Peace at the Centre 200 and playing at Cape Breton University as part of the D250 Rollercoaster Tour.
“We played some pretty big shows there in September so we’re looking forward to getting back,” said Campbell, noting they’re excited to be part of an all-ages tour. “It is really refreshing to get out there and get to play for a younger audience.”
Admission to both shows is $5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the shows at the Savoy Theatre and Strathspey Place are available through the box offices at each venue.

Hey everyone!

Just a quick little update. We've got a new video up from our stay in Toronto. It's parts 1-3 which have already been released as well as a new part 4.

We're still in the recording stage of the album, adding more ear candy that will definitely add a new dynamic to our sound. It's exciting! After the recording comes editing, mixing, mastering etc. so we still have a while to go, but we'll continue to update the progress. In the meantime, we are playing some shows around Nova Scotia in May and June, if you get the chance, come out and hear some of the new tunes that will be on the new album!

After one crazy month in Toronto we arrived back in Nova Scotia on Saturday.

Our last full night in Toronto we had a show at the Tattoo Rock Parlour on Queen St. We ripped out a few new tunes but ended up having to call the show a little early due to Dale putting the kick pedal through the drum, Rock N' Roll! After the set we ran into Mike Turner (formerly of Our Lady Peace) and Jeff Burrows (formerly of the Tea Party). Edwin (formerly of I Mother Earth) works at the bar and these three have a new band in the works called Crash Karma, look out for it! Hangin out with these guys for a night was an awesome way to wrap off the month. Big shout out to Cam as well for booking us at this spot!

Although we're out of the province of Ontario, the recording is still going on. During our last day in Toronto we met Ryan at Laurence's who was doing his last lead vocal tracks. The four of us then got together with Laurence and Ryan's brother Brad who's been doing all the kick ass documenting, and laid down some group vocals for the album. Good times.

We topped the month off in Toronto by going up to the CN Tower for the first time. A few of us aren't fans of heights, but we handled it. We got there during sun set and left later in the night, so we got to see two sides of the city which was interesting.

So back at home Ryan's going to be laying down some back up vocals, and we're stoked to have Rob Crowell lay down some tracks for the album on keys. You may have noticed this musical monster on stage with us recently.

Once those two sections are wrapped up, the recording is all done! We're expecting to have mixes back from Laurence in May and we'll take it from there! Expect to see more videos uploaded in the next few weeks as well. We've got a ton of footage and more work to be done on the album, so stay tuned!

Current mood:  awake
Hey all,

Today is the first day I didn't have to set my alarm, in three and a half weeks. It's finally nice to have a day off to recharge the batteries. Laurence says Troy and I are 75% done of the guitar tracks. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We're taking advantage of this incredible weather and are heading down to Niagara Falls to check out the sights. I have to finish writing some lyrics, so I think some inspiration is in order. The album is really starting to take shape now and each day the canvas gets a splash with a new color. It's like a trip on an airplane, it's really exciting, but will be glad when it's over.

Check back for video and blog updates. Dale says hi.

Rock and Roll,
Ryan

Current mood:  stoked
Hey friends!

Since we've been in Toronto we've been pretty busy. We played a showcase during Canadian Music Week put on by Music Nova Scotia. It was great to see everyone there. It felt like we hadn't left Corner Brook! The show was a lot of fun for us, very cool introduction for our tenure in Toronto so thank you to everyone who was a part of that show. There are some clips of the show on the video attached. The tune playing is called "Hey Kid, to the Back of the Line" which will be on the new album.

Besides the CMW Showcase we've also played the famous Horseshoe Tavern which was quite the experience, also the Boathouse in Kitchener and on April 9th we're booked to play at the Tattoo Rock Parlour. Hopefully we'll get some video up from that show because apparently you can get tattoos there while watching rock concerts and drinking, scary thought!

As for the actual recording process, it's been great to work with Laurence Currie  who produced and engineered our last album. He's got home court advantage here in Toronto, and it's awesome to have someone so familiar with the city around. This place is huge.

Last week we did pre-production, worked out some new song arrangements, re-wrote some parts and wrote a completely new song. This past week we've been in Hallamusic Studios which is a great spot. Dale flew through his drum tracks in about two days which put us ahead of schedule, that's unfamiliar territory for us so we weren't really sure how to react.

This week coming is bass and guitars at Greendoor Studios and right now there's one bass and about ten guitars in our apartment, it's like Christmas!

Can't wait to get the album out for everyone to hear, we're really excited with the songs we're recording. Please check out the following video which is part one of this craziness!

Matt
