Matter Club welcomes Karl Bartos to perform his audio-visual programme.
Karl Bartos’ Live Cinema refers to the classic form of cinema as well as to media art. Together with Mathias Black – on deks and vocoder – he performs his new programme “The Rhythmic Screen”. The large screens are home to films, video loops and animations of cleanly simple pictograms – emphasizing the surrealistic flow of information within our media.
Attending to his set, the audience will have the chance to experience some of his past and present works; The electro classics in which he took part as co-author like “Numbers”, “Computer World”, “Homecomputer”, “Computer Love”, “The Man Machine” or “The Robots” as well as samples of his critically acclaimed solo work “Communication.”
“You can dance to the music while you watch the screens”, he comments. “It’s all about rhythm: How the rhythm of the moving images and the rhythm of the music converge into an all-over audio-visual performance.”

Coverversion, remix, graphics, cut-up, mashup… what are you up to?
At regular intervals we are getting offers for remixes or any kind of collaboration. Usually the requests are based on the decontextualisation of Karls material.
Yes – we are really up to it, though we never liked the idea of a competition.
So, if you can't wait to send in a remix, cut-up, mashup, graphics or a video (mashup or recorded) to one of Karls tracks, you are welcome. Please let us know. A cut-up of the lyrics could be possible as well.
To give all those pieces an outlet we provide the WHITE CUBE page on our webside
www.karlbartos.com
It would be great to get a picture of the participant along with the media. A few words on the work would be appreciated.
One last thought: please don't send in any remix or other work on the music of Karls former band – you know, the electro pioneers from Düsseldorf.
If we can count you in, please send us a word document, pdf, jpeg and/or a mp3 file or a YouTube address to kbdirect@karlbartos.com and we will get back to you soon.
Sorry, we can't give away audio extracts or midi files. Please be aware it's not gonna be a competition it's gonna be rather an exhibition! If there is demand for dialogue, please use the forum.
Okay – we are looking forward to your input!
Kind regards, cheers,
the AudioVision gang
Glossary:
A remix is an alternative version of a song, different from the original version. A remixer uses audio mixing to compose an alternate master recording of a song, adding or subtracting elements, or simply changing the equalization, dynamics, pich, tempo, playing time, or almost any other aspect of the various musical components.
The cut-up technique, also known as fishbowling, is an aleatory literary technique or genre in which a text is cut up at random and rearranged to create a new text.
Mashup (music), a musical genre of songs that consist entirely of parts of other songs.
Mashup (video), a video that is edited from more than one source to appear as one.

Between the KW records "TOUR DE FRANCE" (1984) and "ELECTRIC CAFE" (1986) work at the Kling Klang Studio, the band's long-time home, hit a snag. But Karl knew how to make good use of the uncalled-for spare time. Being a classically-trained percussionist he tied in with his studies at the Robert Schumann institute and started to compose several pieces for percussion instruments. In 1990 the "Fifteen exercises for two snare drums" were released by the renown publisher Zimmermann in Frankfurt, appearing in the series DUO FOR PERCUSSION.
These intermediate duets for snare drum contain fifteen studies, which include the use of frequent dynamic changes, all standard meters, embellishments, and rolls of varying duration.
Karl Bartos: "The purpose of this text is to provide the intermediate student with practical duets which will aid in developing the rhythmic discipline necessary for ensemble playing." New in stock: "FÜNFZEHN ETÜDEN FÜR ZWEI KLEINE TROMMELN" by Karl Bartos, appearing in the series DUO FOR PERCUSSION, published by Zimmermann Frankfurt 1990.

Get The Message: The Best of Electronic to be released in the USA - including tracks co-written by Karl Bartos
(Rhino) Two of the most recognizable sounds from a pair of the most influential alternative rock bands of the '80s -- the melodic melancholy of New Order's Bernard Sumner and the sharp hooks of The Smiths' Johnny Marr -- joined together in 1990 for the single "Getting Away With It." A Top 20 hit in the U.K. featuring guest vocalist and co-writer Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys, the song marked the beginning of a decade-long collaboration between Sumner and Marr. Rhino Records brings together a compilation featuring favorites selected from all three of the band's studio albums along with alternate mixes and rarities.
Taking 10 of its 13 tracks from the group's studio albums, the collection contains music from 1991's self-titled debut, 1996's follow-up, Raise The Pressure, and 2000's Twisted Tenderness. The compilation also includes the single-only "All That I Need" (the B-side of "For You,") and 1996's "Imitation Of Life," the B-side of "Forbidden City."
Throughout Electronic's first decade, the group featured Sumner and Marr performing together with a shifting cast of collaborators that included Tennant; Denise Johnson, who sings on several tracks including "Get The Message"; Karl Bartos formerly of Kraftwerk, who joined the group for much of Raise The Pressure and co-wrote several singles, including "Forbidden City", "For You", "Until The End Of Time", "If You..ve Got Love", "How Long", "Time Can Tell", "I Feel Alright", "Imitation Of Life", "A New Religion".
Not only does GET THE MESSAGE span the group's career but it also spotlights the band's range of sounds from the insistent rhythms of 1991's "Feel Every Beat" to the ringing majesty of 1996's "Forbidden City".
GET THE MESSAGE: THE BEST OF ELECTRONIC Track Listing
