So....
I had this great dream the other night..
Woody Allen was trying to explain to me, in his own neurotic way, his latest script and, while I like his writing a lot, he started to kinda get on my nerves, which I guess is in some ways his vibe.. Anyway, I decided to work out some vocal harmonys with Brian Wilson instead...who just happened to be in the room....
Good times... now if only I knew what it all meant.... answers on a postcard to...
peace Andrew

So I touch down in SF expecting one scenario, I get another…left hangin at the airport…some people just can't be relied on…nuff said!!… head into the city on public transport, you get some funny looks getting on the 38 Geary bus laden down with 3 months worth of gear and a guitar…lol…. Eventually get sorted and start dealing with my latest adventure. Back minding a friends cat….no fear here…never was…sometimes your head plays games with you…sometimes people do…. in a daze for about a week due to jetlag and some other issues but good friends and some inexpensive margaritas soon have me back to my punching weight and off I go into the gigging wilderness. First gigs come to me at The Cannery, 3 hour outdoor slots playing for tips with lots of friendly tourists in attendance, a great way to improve your playing and stage act…I dig it!! Of course luggin around an amp a guitar and a mic stand on buses does have its disadvantages….however I am unphased…I meet some great musicians who I now count as friends and get some more gigs. I get to shoot a video at one of these gigs…everyone thinks I'm a star!!! I play at an Irish bar, a strange gig where many people seem to take much notice, but I am reliably informed by a regular that this is just their way…true Irish fashion…I sit at the bar and get drunk on whiskey… well earned.. the power to the peaceful festival in GGP is cool…but too damn cold…shame…..the fog comes and goes, metaphorically and literally …my time is up and I move onto a friends floor for a couple of weeks…a weird and wacky "trip" to say the least..it eventually serves its purpose..I go to the Strictly Bluegrass festival in searing heat, Billy Bragg kicks ass in his own political way, Richard Thompson bends strings like they were going out of style…and style he has….Drive By Truckers bring on some good ol' southern rock….yeehar! I get sun burnt….hehe…great day with some new and old friends. I keep playing gigs…I move again…cat sitting in Potrero in a cool apartment with lots of sun…nice…get some cool songs written…and some exercise on those big SF hills…I chill between gigs and get to see another side of the city….then I move on to my new room on 19th ave…sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag for a month…all part of the experience, does my back good… I finally get to eat a pleasant pie and wonder why I have not been eating them all along! I get to see Neil Young playing at the Bridge School Benefit 20 year anniversary out at the LakeShore amphitheater, amazing venue, amazing gig..never thought I would get to see the Old Man playing..HE FUCKIN ROCKS…harder than anyone I've ever seen..Pearl Jam are cool as are Trent Reznor, Gillan Welch and the all american experience of Brian Wilson…I wish they all could be Californian indeed…hehe…what a gig!! I spend days biking thru the beauty of Golden Gate Park and sitting out at Ocean Beach watching the surfers do their thang! I hit every café I can get a gig at including one in Oakland where one dude says I am too loud and walks out with his laptop….everyone else loves it…go figure!! Another in outer misson which I only realised too late was too far to ride a bike to…hehe..I meet some more soon to be friends…Start playing Monday nights at The Plough…good to be back…my good friend Mr Hawkins sits in and makes his guitar sing….beautiful …shots are drank…bourbon smiles……guided to read some interesting books, they can change your perspective and your life… I try my hand at surfing one cold morning…2 hours of battling waves leaves me exhausted and with a possible broken toe...but it's the best fun I've had since I was a kid throwing myself recklessly around sports grounds…a most excellent time was had and I will definitely be taking to the waves again DUDES!! I write some great songs, play more gigs.. fly down to LA for a few days..play an open mic there, get to hang out with a cool friend who takes me to Venice, Santa Monica, and various other cool places….what can I say LA lives up to it's rep!! Sure to make a trip back there next time…finally the time comes to leave..I don't want to but hey..that's life…and once again I get food poisoning on the plane ride home…unlucky you might say…NO SHIT I may retort!! What have I learnt from all this?… well…the two most important things in life are to always keep breathing and eating….after that…take the time to make good friends…they will save your life or at least slap you in the face and tell you your life is not in any danger…. Always have sun block at hand…do not persistently poke cats……keep your mouth shut when surfing…..and NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE EAT PLANE FOOD!!!! See y'all next year!!!

Food poisoning on the plane cold shivers, not a recommended way to travel. Arrived just as the month long rain stopped, it was all in the timing. Crashing on a friends floor surrounded by musical instruments, somewhat inspiring. Sitting in Golden Gate Park playing songs after eating half a huge sandwich from a store on Arguello, always saving the rest for later... big portions here..two meals for the price of one. First TV studio recording experience, great fun, great people..First gig in a laundromat, hard to get peoples heads out of their laptops, always a challenge. Headed for a hostel, didnt want to overstay my welcome on friends floors. Hostel life begins as does the drinking..the pub crawls..the cheap cans..the games of pool, and a cool open mic..Met some great people from all over the world, some characters..Luke you will be missed..life is short, have some fun. Stepped out of that life back into my own and continued playing..Got a free place to stay.a place to call home..Death masks on the wall freaked me out, wierd dreams, more than a few scares, all did me good..Got a cool gig once a week in a great Irish bar played my first gig in Oakland, competed with an Amtrak for some of the gig..met some great people from Portland, wonder if they won the yacht race..???? My buddy and I beat all comers with our drunken pool skills...Watched some cool movies, fell asleep during some..ehh..sorry! spent some time at the beach, got taken to see Neil Youngs concert film at the Red Vic for my birthday(hey you).probably the closest I will get to see him playing live, he fucking rocks!(no excuses for the language) Checked out the museums on the free Tuesdays...haha amazing!! Will be going back there for sure. Apparently I am a pretty decent dart player! Had some amazing conversations with an amazing person! Read some great books and continue to do so. Saw a beautiful sunset. Natural highs cannot be beaten.... Climbed on the roof of my place and then realised the ladder was faulty..oops! Ran down the street like some guy from an 80s teen movie(you really had to be there)..Watched Citizen Cane in Union Square...ate some amazing food all through the trip.Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Cuban..the list goes on..Coconut Ice cream, Fresh Donuts at 3am...living the American dream!!! Wrote some great songs...Managed to lose about 18lbs go figure...Left on a hot sunny day..arrived back in Dublin on a hot humid day, was not expecting that.
To all I met, thank you for making it the best experience I have had in years!!
Miss the place and the people like crazy...
See y'all soon

Well I am back in Ireland recovering after my adventures in the US..
Spent a month in California, travelling in and out of San Fran, sleeping on couches and generally just enjoying the sun, met up with some friends, wrote some songs, went to the speedway though there is more crash than speed and had some fun playing songs for joggers and skaters in the park...discovered a new vegetable(forgot its name)
Went to Austin, TX, saw some great music at the ACL and some other cool gigs too, like Willie Nelson, what a guy! Highlights would have to be Thievery Corporation at Stubbs, and Wilco at ACL. I went and got a burger when Coldplay were on and enjoyed my meal very much...lol....I could do nothing about the background music...he he
Met some great musicians down in Austin, got bittten by many mosquitos, almost got kidnapped by some very drunk people from New Braunfels, sat at a bar with David Carradine or Keith Carraidine there was some confusion from Jeremy Scott Echols onstage..lol... played some music here and there, missed out on thanksgiving completely, made good use of public transport and met some interesting characters in the process, saw 6th street on halloween, wrote more songs, realised small dogs are not for me, rekindled my love of cats, almost missed many planes, threw my back out, hallucinated while taking a a flu medicine, talked too much about politics, started drinking Harp, realised my country is just as corrupt as everywhere else - just greener!
Cheers to everyone I met
