Back in February La Family Dub & Richard Blair from Sidestepper throw a DJ set @ Circa28 in Miami, FL. It was a night where the crowd shaked their booties with different rhythms, boogaloo, dancehall, cumbia, afrobeat. Here are some pics from that night. Bless! LFD

Not everyone likes a fight, however, especially this columnist, who got e-mails from angry fans of La Family Dub, the Mexico City DJ collective we wrote about a few weeks ago. Apparently they weren't deserving of the moniker -- La Family Snub -- we gave them after being told they never showed up at Stop Miami one Friday night that they were booked. According to one, the Fam did notify Stop in advance. They even offered to send a replacement. We're told they'll be back to Stop soon and are playing at PS-14 on Thursday. We still love Stop and we definitely appreciate the artistry and integrity of La Family Dub. As for the mix-up: We'll just dub that a big misunderstanding and apologize for the snubbing , and leave it at that.

A message from La Family Dub. Inbox La Family Dub to lank More options Nov 30 Hi Lesley, Firstable, thanks for the review about LFD in your section, is creating a great buzz for us, even that in the review you mention things that are not true. We just wanted to clarify a couple of things because it seems that you got a different story, we know that your are friend with the people from Stop Miami, but we thing is fair for evryone and you to hear not just our version, but the thruth. That week we called the people from Stop on Wednesday but we found them until Thursday night, that is when we notified them that LFD can't be @ Stop on Friday. They mentioned that it was a short notice and to tell them these kind of things earlier, which we have done in the past. Besides that, we didn't have any contract with them, we are free to play wherever we want. They were cool and told us to look for a replacement and we did. On Friday around 12am we received a message saying that we have to go to Stop on Friday because you were supossed to be there to see us and write a review on LFD, that they forgot to tell us about it, so that we must go. At 2 am I found an email in my inbox from Stop saying that LFD will be @ Stop when it wasn't a fact, we haven't discussed the issue yet and we already told them that we can't. That Friday they called to tell us the same thing, we told them that we were at the airport (which was totally true, we went to pick up a memeber from LFD Mexico Crew) and told them again that was very hard to be @ Stop that day, they insisted and told us to do whatever we can and call them back. I called them again and left them a message confirming that we can't make it. So, there was no mistery, they knew we won't make it from the beggining. And we never had airpot problems by the way. Regarding the comment "Didn't someone tell them that you don't bite the hand that feeds you?", you should know that we never received a cent from Stop, even when we packed the place (almost all the times). We agreed to be there for free until the beggining of the season. Therefore, Stop wasn't feeding LFD and never did. By the way, we heard that you didn't go that night to Stop, but we'll let you know about upcoming shows not because we want a review or something, just so you can go and see us, and enjoy life as we do, I think you never seen us before. We are working on a new single, a Miami Herald/Stop version, you will get an mp3 soon. Next time, it would be nice to confirm the information you got or hear the other side of the story, you write for a well known and serious newspaper, not any newspaper. We have nothing to hide, nothing to be ashamed of, our souls are clean and ready to keep Miami, Mexico and the World rocking! We are trying to bring to Miami nothing but good vibes. "I'm so solid as a rock they just can't stop me now Even when they set their traps they just can't stop me now People will say this and that they just can't stop me now Even when they set up road blocks they just can't stop me now" Saludos! LA FAMILY DUB

Hola,
I just read your note on the La Family Dub Vs. Stop Miami "incident". It worries us that you would be so easily willing to write such a note without a previous confirmation of the facts. You write in a newspaper, not a gossip mag. It is very obvious that you are friends with the owners of Stop Miami.
"Didn't someone tell them that you don't bite the hand that feeds you"???? What is this, owners and pets??? Do you think Stop Miami is 'feeding' La Family Dub? Actually, It is the other way around on the days these guys play there!!! Incredible.
These guys are EXCELLENT people. Maybe the owners did not mention they got a message on the phone from the guys telling them what was going on several days before the supposedly betrayed show? Did they tell you why weren't they answering the phone? Because maybe they thought the guys were calling about the money they were promessed?
Do you know the guys have in their hands a very angry, racist and cursing phone message about 'mexicans' and this 'fuckin' city' from one of the owners that just shows who is the stressed and badly vibed bitch in this situation?
La Family Dub can become a cultural beacon in Miami in three months. They are good, working people, great artists, noble hearts. They did not do anything wrong. That does not make you look very good.
It is right music industry insiders are buzzing about them, and they have just started. Their potential creating a Fuacata! Meets ethnictronic revolution is a night away. Anyway, I guess the guys have to thank you for the publicy, gives them a usefull touch of punk coolness.
Try to get the revealing and controversial, and ultimately funny, MP3 audio file. It has been sampled over this super cool cumbiatronic track for future shows. I'm sure you'll get it from someone in the next days. It is the coolest and funniest thing, especially the part that screams "I have important friends in the Miami Herald!"
This has been PERFECT for them.
Stop's people will miss them.
Thank you for… nothing, I guess.

VELVET UNDERGROUND Britney stood us up -- but count on Fed-Ex By LESLEY ABRAVANEL lank@aol.com
Semantics are funny, pesky things, aren't they? You know, using the word ''penthouse'' to describe a nondescript apartment that just happens to be on the top floor of the building; or the word ''suite'' to describe a two-by-four room; or even tagging a party as VIP, only to discover that the most important person in the room is your electrician who just so happened to wire the club that particular night. So when Britney Spears said she was coming ''here'' last weekend, she really meant ``Louisiana.''
As disappointed as we were that she didn't show to record with Pharrell Williams as planned, at least no one started rumors that she really was here. However, the rumors are true that Spears' much maligned ex, Fed-Ex, will be here tonight for hosting duties at Mansion. Legendary DJ Pete Tong will be spinning Mansion into an aural frenzy on Thanksgiving Eve -- that would be Wednesday for those who still can't get over the fact that Halloween's long gone. Also that night at The Fifth: the fifth annual Get Goosed Pre-Thanksgiving Day Bash featuring a stellar lineup of spin doctors including DJ Mark Leventhal, Louis Dee, Miguel G, Ani Phearce, Alex Alvarez and Pete Moreno. They say capacity is limited for the party and reservations are strongly encouraged, but somehow we don't think they'll necessarily turn you away at the door should you just show up impromptu. To get on the guest list, go to www.onsevents.com.
And speaking of giving thanks, fresh off his role as the ringleader of the VIP tent at BANG!, Michael Capponi is spearheading efforts to feed the homeless Thanksgiving Day in a lot at 700 Biscayne Blvd. from noon-4 p.m. Capponi is calling for volunteers. The Forge, Rosinella, Gemma Lounge and Opium Group have already signed up to donate. And now Capponi's asking all those who have ever begged to get on his proverbial list to come out and help, too. ''I realized that this effort could be replicated on a much larger scale so that we could feed as many people as possible on Thanksgiving Day,'' Capponi says. ``For that reason, I am inviting the community, particularly restaurants, to donate time and food.''
On a lighter note, it seems that more than a handful of hipsters have been imploring Tommy Pooch to bring sceney back to Tuesday night and he's done just that at The Delano, where he's revisiting the wildly popular cocktail confabs that used to take place at The Astor. This time, however, according to Pooch's partner Alan Roth, it's going to be bigger and better, with more celebrities, models and DJ Irie, the must-have accessory of the social season, whose musical Midas touch can turn even a librarian convention into a raucous affair that's talked about for weeks. When we asked Irie if he's cloned himself, he just laughed and said he takes each event as it comes and busts his bass to make it the best he can. Whatever he's doing, it's working. And, clearly so is Tobacco Road, which celebrates its unprecedented 94th anniversary this Friday with a huge party featuring live bands including the Spam Allstars and Suénalo Sound System. Starts at 8 p.m. and costs $10.
A place we hope is still here in 94 or so years is Stop Miami, our favorite urban outfitter of wine, cheese and creative DJ collectives such as the one that's been playing there on Friday nights for the past two months until they mysteriously didn't show up last week. 'They claimed they had some `airport' problems,'' says Danny Brody, Stop's co-owner, ''And then it turned out they played later somewhere else! This is a tough town for a small neighborhood joint, I tell ya!'' Didn't someone tell them that you don't bite the hand that feeds you? Hailing from Mexico City, La Family Dub or as we now call them, La Family Snub, had been attracting an A-list crowd of music execs from Sony and MTV to Stop thanks to their colorful mariachi-on-meth getups featuring Lucha Libre wrestlers' masks. One even dressed up as Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico, who watches over the crowd from a lighted perch above the DJ booth, where they spun everything from salsoul and Latin breakbeats to theme songs from 1960s Mexican TV series. With or without them, the party doesn't get going until after 11 and goes until at least 3 a.m., when, if you haven't had enough of Stop's tasty nibbles, it's just a hop across the boulevard to Taco Bell, where just last week we could have sworn we saw Nicole Richie stuffing her face, but then realized we were being delusional -- or would that be deluded? Hmm. Semantics.

To see La Family Dub working the wheels of steel is to watch a full on performance, band be damned. Up above the tiny, buzzing crowd at Stop Miami, in the little attic DJ booth behind their glowing, psychedelic Virgin Mary statuette, the two-man DJ crew whip through vintage Latin breakbeats, soulful salsa, oddball Mambo-dance fusion, and all kinds of other off-kilter, baroque sounds. This weekly event is already developing its own following, and chances are that the dub familia will be able to lead this growing gutter-funky cult to all manner of venues in the coming months. previewed by: Jason Jeffers
