DBE JUST LIKE MEATLOAF: TWO OUT OF THREE AIN'T BAD
***Andre Berto knocks out Mikki Rodriguez to capture WBC Welterweight Crown; Ronald Hearns stays undefeated knocking out Jose Luis Gonzalez;
Chazz Witherspoon loses by confusing disqualification against
top heavyweight Chris Arreola***
NEW YORK (June 25, 2008) – Last weekend for DiBella Entertainment can be summed up in one line, "two out of three ain't bad". DBE had three of its combatants fighting in separate bouts in two different locations on Friday and Saturday.
The weekend started off well in the Cayman Islands as Ronald "The Chosen One" Hearns improved his undefeated record to 19-0, 15 KO's as he knocked out Jose Luis Gonzalez (12-4-1, 10 KO's) in the seventh round of a highly entertaining affair. Hearns looked impressive, throwing strong jabs in a fight that appeared around the world live on ShoBox. Ronald's improvement has been extraordinary and he is prepared for bigger and better things.
The next day in Memphis, Tennessee DBE promoted HBO's Boxing After Dark at FedExForum.
In the night's co-feature, DBE heavyweight Chazz "The Gentleman" Witherspoon challenged a vicious competitor in WBC Continental Americas champ Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola. Both fighters came out swinging and looking for the knockout. Arreola caught Witherspoon, putting him on the mat twice in the third round. The second knockdown occurred as the bell rang to end the round. The referee had no idea that the bell had rung. After looking confused and deliberating with the Commission for several minutes, the referee disqualified Witherspoon as his corner came in the ring thinking the round was over. The corner was not stopped by the inspector, thus they proceeded. "This was not the way for this fight to end," said DBE head Lou DiBella. "Chris Arreola is a true warrior and we wish him luck on his quest to win the heavyweight title. This referee was completely wrong and lost control of the fight. The corner was never stopped from coming into the ring. This fight had a right to come to a proper and conclusive finish."
DBE got back on the winning track with an exclamation point in the main event in Memphis. Top DBE welterweight Andre Berto showed he is the future of the power packed division, when the 24-year old captured the vacant WBC welterweight title knocking out tough and rugged Mexican Mikki Rodriguez in the 7th round. "I am so proud to have promoted Andre since his pro debut and I'm thrilled to add another World Champion to DBE's family of fighters," said DiBella. "Andre Berto will be a star in boxing for years to come."

McGirt vs. DeLeon in battle between sons of former world champs Friday night on ShoBox from Miami
VERO BEACH, Florida (April 9, 2008) – The marketing of unbeaten super middleweight prospect James McGirt, Jr. (18-0, 9 KOs) spikes Friday night when the son of former world champion James "Buddy" McGirt fights in his first scheduled 10-round bout against the offspring another ex-world title holder, Carlos "Baby Sugar" DeLeon, Jr. (19-2-2, 12 KOs), in the 10-round co-feature on ShoBox, airing live from Miccosukee Resort in Miami.
"I had an excellent training camp, about two months long, and I'm ready to go," James said. "All of the hard work has been done. My dad (and head trainer) watched tapes of DeLeon. He's told me what to do and what to watch out for. That's the way we always do it. Nobody breaks down tapes and analyzes opponents better than my father. I don't watch tapes; I just do what he teaches me. Working with Glen Johnson has been great for me. He brings a lot of experience to the table and a lot of pressure. I really liked the work."
The fathers of McGirt and DeLeon were world champions at the same time in 1988. McGirt, Sr., who had a 73-6-1 (48 KOs) record as a pro, was a 2-time world champion in two weight classes (IBF light welterweight 1988, WBC welterweight 1991-93). Carlos "Sugar" DeLeon, Sr., 52-8-1 (32 KOs) as a pro, was a 4-time WBC cruiserweight champion (1980-82, 1983-85, 1986-88, 1989).
"Training has been good, no complaints," Buddy McGirt remarked. "The best part was working with Glen Johnson. No matter who we fight, they can't put pressure on like Glen Johnson. They offered to pay James to spar with Glen, but we did it for the experience. DeLeon is a good fighter. His specialty is a double left hook. The key is to nullify it.
"James' strength and conditioning program has helped him a great deal. You can see the difference in his body, especially his legs. Plus, he's maturing. I've put him in the gym with the best to test him, and James has gained a lot of valuable experience that way."
McGirt, rated No. 26 by the WBC, is a southpaw originally from Brentwood, New York, now living and fighting out of Vero Beach, Florida. DeLeon, rated No. 29 by the WBC, is the reigning USNBC champion from Puerto Rico.
"Friday night is where we wanted to be (ShoBox in first 10-round fight)," McGirt's manager Dennis Witherow explained. "We did this like a business plan with long range plans. We knew that it was going to take time to get there. A win in this fight will be a big leap towards where we want to get. Ideally, we'll get a look at a top 15 or bigger name opponent. One different thing about James now is that outside of the ring he understands boxing is a business. He's not a trash talker like other guys, preferring to let his hands do the talking, but he realizes he has to market himself. He's been talking to kids in school, attending charity events, and he'll be doing more things he really enjoys like that.
"James is proud of who he is. He is a true student of the art of boxing. He's been educated in boxing his entire life. Not only has he learned how to be a good boxer, he knows when to box and throw certain punches, not just throwing 'em at random. His strength is going to be the biggest surprise. His conditioning has always been great, but the conditioning and weights program he's been on has made a huge difference."
Part of McGirt's marketing campaign includes a mission statement to become the first family in boxing to feature father-son world champions with the former working his natural son's corner as head trainer when the latter captures a major world title. The McGirts want to make boxing history together and the next chapter starts Friday night on ShoBox.

NEW YORK– IBF junior welterweight champion Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi hopes to ink a pact early next week to confirm his dream deal: a two-fight arrangement culminating with a showdown against the world’s recognized No. 1 junior welterweight, Ricky Hatton, The Ring magazine and IBO title-holder.
Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi

"I’ve got to admit that, after the Cotto fight," Malignaggi said, "I never thought that I’d get the chance to fight another great champion again. I believed in myself, but it was almost like I proved too much to everyone, that I had skills, but most of all, that I’m as tough as anyone who ever laced on gloves. I’m really grateful that Team Hatton looks like they’ll give me the opportunity to fight on Ricky’s big card in Manchester in May and then against him in the Fall in the United States.
"Ricky and I have a lot in common. Both our fathers were soccer players – his in England and mine in Italy – and we’ve both paid our dues and earned the respect of the fans and other fighters. The only marks on our records came against two great fighters, Mayweather and Cotto.
Ricky Hatton

What makes it so exciting is the big difference in our fighting styles. Ricky is rough and tough; an all-action fighter who takes advantage of everything he can to get the win. You’re never going to see a Hatton fight that doesn’t keep you on the edge of your seat. Most of my fights have been boxing matches. The excitement was dictated by how aggressive the other guy wanted to be. If they brought it, they got it back times 10. I know I’m at the top of my game right now and that’s what it takes to have a chance against a great champion like Ricky Hatton."
Malignaggi (24-1, 5 KOs) captured the IBF title last June, defeating champion Lovemore N’dou (45-8-1) by 12-found decision, and Paulie successfully defended his belt in January with a 12-round decision against No. 1 contender Herman Ngoudjo (16-1).

"Everyone was blown away when they heard Ricky was going to fight at City of Manchester Stadium," Paulie continued. "It’s going to be crazy over there! They’ve had a lot of quality fighters in Great Britain - Joe Calzaghe, David Haye, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. They also had Lennox Lewis, but nothing like what Ricky means to them. Vegas was crazy last December and I know we can bring that atmosphere back when we go at it in the Fall. This won’t be a Friendly, more like a World Cup match, wherever we fight.
"My goal has always been to make the biggest and best fights, just like my great friend, Floyd Mayweather, has told me to do. A match-up between me and Ricky will be a Super Fight, one talked about for as long as there is boxing. No other fight at 140 matters.
Paul Malignaggi and Aaron Baraunstein

And before the fight, well, everyone knows that I talk a lot of smack, so Ricky’s not going to get any breaks there, either. Like with Floyd, me and Ricky can save seeing if we’re cool until once we’ve earned each other’s respect at the only place it counts – in the ring. There is no one, I repeat, no one I want to fight more than the No. 1 guy in the division - Ricky Hatton. Forget the money, forget the titles, this is about being the best. I know that if I get in the ring with Ricky Hatton, I’ll show him and everyone else what I’m made of, that I am the best 140-pound fighter in the world.
"I want to thank Ricky, his father, Ray, his lawyer, Gareth, who I met in Vegas, my team and everyone at Golden Boy and DBE for working so hard on this. I know I’m not always the easiest guy to deal with because I get so emotional over stupid stuff and open my mouth. I want to hype things up and get my chance to prove to everyone that I can walk the walk with the best. I’m ready to sign on the dotted line and prove to the Hattons and everyone else that Paulie Malignaggi is ready and up for the task of making this the biggest and best promotion that it can be. The best versus the best! ’Magic Man’

If Ricky Hatton can beat me, then he can close the book on the 140-pound division. But no one’s beating the ’Magic Man’ ever again. Me and Ricky are both professionals and know we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We both know that if we don’t win in May, our fight can never happen. Let everyone know that Paulie Malignaggi will do his part to make this happen and I’m counting on Ricky to do the same."

SANTANA
*** DBE Spanish Harlem Junior Welterweight wants Salita***
"Santana has been diligently training and looking sharp for his return to Broadway Boxing," said manager Ernesto Dallas.
Santana is looking to rebound and "is on the comeback trail since his disappointing loss in June and is ready to show that one bad night does not derail a career," said Dallas. "Santana is still an emerging force in the Junior Welterweight division. It is a testament to our faith in Santana that we are going to fight Grover Wiley as a comeback fight. This is the same Grover Wiley who fought Dmitriy Salita and went the distance with him as a main event."

Team Santana knows exactly who they have their sights set on for the future. "I want to invite all fans to come out to the Manhattan Center on March 5th and see Santana’s performance against Wiley and compare to what Salita looked like against Wiley," said Dallas. "I also want to extend a personal invitation to Dmitriy and the rest of Team Salita to come out and watch a real fighter at work. There will be ringside seats waiting at the door coutesy of Edgar Santana. Team Santana doesn’t take on bums! Salita was too scared to fight us on HBO last year. Maybe after Santana’s performance with Wiley, Salita will grow a pair and step into the ring with Edgar and try to justify his ridiculous 3 ranking by the WBA!"
