Allo all!

Its been a busy couple of weeks with a bunch of shows and the 'joys' of planning our first trip to Sydney. Our last show at Rics on Friday night was only our third together as the new band and from all accounts its sounding as good as it ever has. We've definately enjoyed the last few shows immensely and we especially want to say thanks to everyone who's come to see us.

But right now there's only one word on our lips and its SYDNEY SYDNEY SYDNEY! We are childishly excited about our first trip to the great southern city and maybe its because none of us have had a holiday for a while, let alone been on a decent road-trip since we were 8. Either way, Grant has had a towbar installed to his car, Dave's sorted the hire of a box trailer and come sunrise tomorrow morning we will embark on the wide open road with a brief stop over in Armidale on our way to Sydney. We're doing a couple of shows but the main one we would love love love to see any of you at is the show on the Sunday night at the Excelsior Hotel. Here's the run down for the when's and where's and you can click on the poster for more info. Please don't hesitate to tell your uncle's, nieces, ex-boyfriends etc.. from Sydney to come along. Hope to see some of you there! XO Mr R

'My, What a Big Black Cloud'
Mr Rascal
(Independant)

'My, What a Big Black Cloud' is the product of Christian Duell's 'album in a month' challenge. He wrote, sang, played and recorded the ten-track effort in November last year, amongst personal sorrow, happiness, freak weather and a historical setting. As an emotional recount of his experiences, it is evident within the tracks that Christian was grieving, healing and looking ahead. Other tracks are just deliciously cute. With an array of amazing instrumentals (borrowed from Brisbane's Old Museum, where he recorded) and gorgeously tender vocals, his sound comes off as rather beautiful.

November 2008 was a month to remember for Mr Rascal.

Amidst a canceled wedding, a death in the family and some ridiculously bad luck were a series of sinister and curious tropical storms. In the deep hours of the night the streets of Brisbane became confetti-filled water courses and wind tunnels.

Stumbling through insomnia, sadness and these dream-like weather apparitions Christian Duell accepted the challenge to write and record an album in a month. What resulted was not so much an album but more an explosion of all of these experiences into songs.

Months later, the dust has settled on this memorable and turbulent month and the experience of November has now been revisited with a faithful remixing of the entire recording by renowned engineer Bryce Moorhead. The remixed recordings capture the spontaneity of the songwriting and performances, contained in the natural character of Brisbane's Old Museum Concert Hall.

The experiment of 'My, What a Big Black Cloud' has produced remarkable results. Not only does it have a semblance of album-like coherence, with common themes and sounds, it also hints at the numerous future possibilities for Mr Rascal's sonic direction.

The launch of this release will be celebrated in style at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Sunday 26 July 2009, with dates in Sydney and Melbourne to follow.

'My, What a Big Black Cloud' will be available as a limited hard-copy release from Monday 27 July, 2009 from independent retailers and online. The recording will also be available as a digital download from iTunes, emusic and amazon.

Hello all!

A quick note to say that we have a new song 'Two Curtains' up on our profile. Tell us what you think!

Basically this was part of the batch that I recorded for the album in a month in November last year...and we've been getting our good friend Bryce Moorhead to do a bit more mixing of the songs. We're hoping to remix the whole album and put it out in some kind of loose format in the next couple of months. Stay tuned.

Oh...and if you haven't already crossed over to the dark side of facebook then please come and visit us and become a member of the Mr Rascal fan page:

Dear friends of Mr Rascal,

This is a quick update to tell you about a very special show we're organising for THIS FRIDAY NIGHT!

Basically, we've gathered together three (well two at least!) unique, top-notch acts to put on a show with a difference.

Unfortunately...Mojo Webb has had to cancel as he is currently residing in hospital following a nasty motorcycle accident. He's doing OK but won't be on his feet for a while.

So! Replacing Mojo is DANNY WIDICOMBE (solo). Danny is widley regarded as Brisbane's 'guitarist to the stars', having lent his lead skills to the bands of such esteemed gentlemen as Tim Rogers, Bernard Fanning and Andrew Morris. Danny also features in alt-country supergroup The Wilson Pickers. Above all Danny is a handy soloist and will put on a hell of a show on Friday night. http://www.dangerbird.com.au

Secondly, DOUG WILSHIRE & THE TAILSPINNERS. 'Diamond Doug' is formerly of Brisbane rockabilly / blues outift the Chrome Daddies and has a illustrious musical history having lead a number of top quality acts and played and recorded with the likes of Royal Crown Review and the Drifters to name but a few.

And of course Brisbane's 'not-quite-favourite but still dearly-loved' musical collective MR RASCAL will be performing again with a whole new lineup- this time as an 8-piece with a new lead guitarist Dave Maguire (very awesome dude indeed) and Matthew Schneider (somtimes drummer for the Gin Club and Sue Ray's band) hitting the skins for the whole set. We promise a couple of new tunes and some new arrangements of the current 'Pocketful of Smoke' batch.

Following our sell-out album launch and the overwhelming love that has flowed since the album release we guarantee that this will be a great night.

MORE RASCAL THEATRICS!

Facing the steepest of odds, MR RASCAL recently etched their name into a tiny corner of local history with a sell-out album launch at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC. Have gained embarrassing levels of praise (one reviewer describing it as 'the most complete, well rounded and ambitious show from a local artist, no any artist in some time') for the launch event, the ever-changing local collective are back with another show not to be missed.

Mr Rascal will play the Globe Theatre on Friday the 22nd of August with the support of some most wonderful guests, blues legend MOJO WEBB and DOUG WILSHIRE AND THE TAILSPINNERS (formerly of The Chrome Daddies).

As with all things Mr Rascal, this show again tests ambition to the point of failure. The Rascal band will feature a number of brand new players as well as new songs and new arrangements of the current batch of the songs from the latest album 'A Pocketful of Smoke'. With the guest lineup featuring a mix of blues, rockabilly as well as the hard-to-pigeonhole folk stylings of the Rascal troupe, this event guarantees a collision of a whole bunch of local musical worlds!

Tickets to the show are available from www.oztix.com.au 1300 762 545 or from the Globe box office ($10 + booking fee).

Dear friends of Mr Rascal,

Album Launch

I'd finally like to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who came out to our album launch last Friday night. I'm sure anyone who was there would agree that it was a really memorable night and of us in the band it couldn't have gone much better. There was a lot of hard work put in to make such an ambitious undertaking a reality and so I'd personally like to thank Tyneale, Bryce and Marty particularly for putting in the hard yards to make it happen.

For anyone who missed it or if you're curious to hear what the peeps of the street press reckoned have a gander at a review in this week's Rave:

Time Off also had a most complimentary review...they don't seem to have it on the net anywhere so pick up a copy of this week's edition if you're interested.

Press

So the album is now officially out. In the lead up to the album launch we had a couple of interviews and a review of the album as well:

Again, Rave seems to be the only magazine that has anything on the net..

We're also chuffed that Big Oz Australia have chosen to make 'A Pocketful of Smoke' a feature album on their website:

Album Release

Finally the album is officially out and about and we would like everyone who is slightly interested in what we do to own a copy. There's a few ways you can do it but the best bet is going to either our myspace or website and ordering a copy or downloading the album from itunes:

It is also available from Rockinghorse Records (City), Kill the Music (City) and Leading Edge (Indooroopilly).

We've got a couple of gigs coming up in the next couple of weeks (one at Ric's on the 31 July and another semi-ambitious one planned for the Globe in late August) so stay tuned.

Thanks again for your collective support and for making the launch a success.

Cheers

Good morning everybody!

Album launch

Well our album launch is now but a few days away (this Friday 11 July) and to say that the support and interest in the event has been overwhelming is an understatement! There are still a limited number of tickets available so please if you haven't bought one yet get in quick and order online:

https://www.qtix.com.au/show/mr_rascal_08.aspx

Unfortunately our dear tabala-playing friend Dheeraj is stranded between Nepal and India and has regrettably had to pull out of the show. No doubt he would have been a stellar inclusion to the lineup but the show must go on and there will still be 16 other musicians to ensure it is suitably spectacular!

Here's a little bit of extra info on the lineup for the night. QPAC is a well-oiled machine as you can imagine so you can be assured that the following times will run like clockwork (ba-bum chi!):

Doors open 7:30pm

Carry Nation 8:00pm

The Granite Lakes 8:45pm

Mr Rascal 9:30pm

And..everything you'll ever need to know about finding the joint: http://www.qpac.com.au/at_qpac/location_and_access/

Tickets will be available on the door if available and there will be t-shirts, badges, copies of the single and of course THE ALBUM!

Album release

Speaking of which the album is officially released today! This would mean a lot if we had a record company because you would see it on every street and corner and Koshie would be giving it a plug on Sunrise. But alas this is not so, so it's a little harder to get. Basically you can start by ordering it from us via our website:

http://www.misterrascal.com/shop.htm

Alternatively it will be available on iTunes if not today in the next couple of days…

http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/

Then you could buy it from one of Brisbane's fleeting independent record stores..namely Rockinghorse (245 Albert St, http://www.rockinghorse.net/) or Leading Edge (Level 1, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre)…but again you'll have to wait til probably Tuesday or Wednesday for that. Ah..the joys of DIY!

Either way…we promise it will be available at the launch! And of course we are featruing the final two songs off the album on our website and myspace this week 'Road to the Morning Sun' and 'The Tombstone Express'

www.myspace.com/misterrascal

www.misterrascal.com

Hopefully we can catch up with a lot of you at the show. This is a really exciting / rewarding time for all of us who have been a part of the making of the album so thank you to everyone who has helped to support it!

Cheers

Having completed their self-funded debut album 'A Pocketful of Smoke', Brisbane musical collective Mr Rascal are preparing to launch the album in style with a showcase event of spectacular proportions on Friday the 11th of July at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC. https://www.qtix.com.au/show/mr_rascal_08.aspx

With the launch event now less than two weeks away, and tickets selling fast, Rascal are heavily in 'rehearsal-mode'. The full seventeen-piece band is now confirmed, including guitar, bass, percussion, keys, a brass ensemble, strings, banjo, mandolin, classical singers and a tabala player.

Despite the sense of ambition inherent in all of Mr Rascal's movements, 'A Pocketful of Smoke' is not merely an experiment in local collaboration. The album features 10 very genuine and personal stories; some playful, others painful, weaved together by underlying themes of loss and generational change.

With their debut feature-length album, Mr Rascal aim to convey the fine line between joy and pain; ambition and comfort; for no other reason than to strike a chord of commonality with the occasional likeminded soul.

In the lead up to the release of the album, Mr Rascal will be featuring three new songs a week on their official website and myspace site.

The debut Mr Rascal album 'A Pocketful of Smoke' will be available from iTUNES, independent record stores and to order online from Monday the 7th July, 2008. For more information go to www.misterrascal.com and www.myspace.com/misterrascal. Tickets to the album launch are available from qtix.com.au or by calling 136 246.
