The new site is coming along fairly well. Please take a look and please join in. We don't do a thing with your emails except send you free tickets or schtuff from time to time. We are putting up new and old pictures all the time in our Photo Gallery and we have a forum where people can vent. Very soon there will be a prize page which will be open to registered members of the site. I must admit that going from a print publication to a Web publication (though we always were a Web publication, just not only a Web publication) has proved harder on me than I thought. Without having to shove those files off to Canada each month we are getting flabby and out of shape...however, that is changing. Slowly but sure. We are still getting great interviews, doing great reviews and peppering the site with previews. We are also sponsoring some great shows including the Dresden Dolls this weekend. Hits are rapidly increasing and soon we will be bigger and better than ever. Your support, as always is requested. Tell your friends, tell your family, tell total strangers on the street. What do you get in return? Love, admiration, free CDs and soooo much more. Thanks. JIM

April 28, all hell will break loose in the lovely city of St. Louis. PLAYBACK:stl will be celebrating four years of publication with a large show at the Pageant (in the Delmar Loop). Not only will there be lots of great stuff to give away, raffle, or otherwise scatter on the audience, but we will have four huge talents take the stage. They include: Geoff Koch, a stunningly talented young man who will make your hearts flutter and your beer taste even better. One Lone Car, the hottest sensation on this side of the Mississippi that happen to come from the other side of the Mississippi. Lorenzo Goetz, the Champaign of party bands who will make  you dance and will make you wanna get "heavy." And the truly amazing Margot & the Nuclear So & So's who are just rereleasing their first album on Artemis Records - The Dust of Retreat. All four are featured on our music this month. Tickets are $6. The show is all ages. Doors are at 7. And you can get more info by calling 314-630-6404. Be there and help us SHINE.

MARCH 2006

MARCH:
SOUTH BY
SOUTHWEST ISSUE

If it is March (and it will be soon enough) we will be in Austin, TX for one of the country's largest music festivals - South By Southwest.  Each year PLAYBACK:stl has the distinct pleasure of spending five days in one of the coolest music cities in the country. While there we see hundreds of bands and meet hundreds of industry professionals. Many labels set up camp there to showcase their bands and look for other talent to sign. Our February issue will focus on this awesome festival with a cover story featuring TX-born talent Blue October. Also in the issue will be interview with dozens of artists including Elbow, The Cribs, Mellowdrone, Bluebottle Kiss, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Youth Group, Nine Black Alps, Mates of State, The Boy Least Likely, The Lashes, Magnolia Summer, Be Your Own Pet, Ladytron, Art Brut, Mellowdrone, and Andy Dick.

GET IN THE BAG. This year PLAYBACK:stl is setting up camp at SXSW's ground zero - the tradeshow in the Austin Convention Center. The tradeshow is open to badge holders (these include industry people, performers, and the media - last year they numbered 10,000) and lasts three days. At our booth this year we will be promoting the magazine (of course), doing whatever we can to attract attention to PLAYBACK:stl and the great music it is promoting, and getting the word out about YOU. This year we are handing out canvas bags that will feature the lovely PLAYBACK:stl logo on the side. Inside those bags will be information about the magazine and our various activities over 2006. There will also be plenty of room left over for your CD or promo material (due to space constraints we ask that you pick one or the other). Those who make their reservation before 2/13/06 will be featured in an ad (2x2) in the March issue of the magazine (there you can have your name, picture, and contact information). Currently we are looking at production of 750 to 1000 bags - you are invited to provide up to 500 discs or promotional packets for insertion*.

Get in the bag for a low cost of $200. This price includes an insertion of 500 discs or promotional information in our PLAYBACK:stl bag which will be distributed at the South By Southwest Tradeshow (March 16 -18) at the Austin Convention Center. You will not get better exposure for your music or business than with this audience. For those wishing to just distribute their disc or promotional material without the ad in the March issue, the cost is $150 and the deadline is 3/10/06.

Contact PLAYBACK:stl at 314-630-6404 for more information or email jim@playbackstl.com

Due to a new printing schedule, the
DEADLINE FOR the March issue is 2/12/06.

* Discs need to be shipped to Austin at artist's expense.

Leaders of the Free World
I’m sick of working for a living
I’m just ticking off the days till I die
I miss you Louise
And the sickest little pleasures keep me going in between pulling teeth

Periscope up
I’ve been looking for a ladder
I need to see THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF
And remind him what was passed onto me

Your mum don’t sleep!
The friends you keep!
I didn’t raise a thief!

But the LEADERS OF THE FREE WORLD
Are just little boys throwing stones
And its easy to ignore ‘til they’re knocking on the door of your homes

My thinking isn’t driven
But the music always gives me a lift
I’m so easy to please
But I think we dropped the baton like the 60’s didn’t happen. Oh no.

Periscope up
Should be looking for a ladder
I need to se THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF
And remind him what was passed onto me

Your mum don’t sleep!
The friends you keep!
I didn’t raise a thief!

Passing the gun from Father to FECKLESS son
We’re climbing a landslide where only the good die young

Elbow is a band out of England. They have toured here in the US and are amazing. They were on our second cover in 2002 and there will be a nice extensive interview with Guy Garvey in our March issue. They will be at SXSW. Awesome band.
