Akahum's performance at The Eden Festival this September reviewed on the BBC: "'there was just enough light to dance to a tremendous set by Akahum."

JUNE 2009
22nd - 'Hempi' No. 1 in Soundawesome charts!

Meet our new drummer / percussionist, Charlie Rascal!
Ian

Charlie is a long time friend of Akahum and we're chuffed to welcome him on board. Great dress sense too.

19th, 20th & 21st - Our Pre-Solstice Bash fell victim to a double booking so we rescheduled it to Friday night and moved to a generous friend's place just outside Hereford.

A jolly Summer night with friends and party-people.

Saturday morning we all set off to Builth Wells for the Sonic Rock Solstice. Even though our slot wasn't until Sunday we thought we'd get in early and catch up on the festival vibe etc. Saturday night we managed to meet up with the faces behind Soundawesome, shared a few drinks and had a laugh. Great site, friendly people and majestic Welsh scenery.
listen to the gig
We had a great time. The new tracks went down a treat and everyone warmed to the rhythms of Zenga and Charlie, a rare opportunity to see both of Akahum's percussionists on stage together! Thanks to Mart Hasbeen and everyone else who put SRS together.

12th & 13th - On top of other transport problems our gig at Misztifiedmind Records 4th Birthday Party (13.06.09) was thwarted by a section 63 being served on Gaia Roots, who were running the stage. Next time lucky you guys.

JUNE 2009
Saturday 6th June was our return appearance at the Wyeside Festival, Hereford. Organisers of Wyeside joined forces with 'The Big Event' to pull off a bigger-than-ever free festival. We played a full-on 30 minute set for many happy dancing feet.

MAY 2009
Two more gigs on the south coast, Southampton & Portsmouth. Even though the two venues were quite different both gigs had excellent audiences. The Hobbit was our 'Special Spring Quadrantids Meteor Shower Gig', a two & ½ hour marathon of new & updated tunes.
'The Cool Banana Junkyard Show' in Portsmouth was a full-on psychedelic experience with our projections & Pete firing off his cool laser show to our 90 minute build-up assault. We must thank Matt & all at TCBJS for showing us a great time.
Thanks to Flash Harry for the neat photos.

APRIL 2009
Great party at Featherstone Castle, Northumbria!
Thanks to Monk, Adam, Ewan and the rest of the Timelord crew for a fantastic weekend. These guys know how to do it.

100,000 total plays on our MySpace player - thank you all!

The music industry/scene is so reliant on the internet now that statistics are everything.
A year ago we would never have imagined seeing our play count in six figures.
It's great to know Akahum continues to please the ears of thousands.
Onwards & Upwards!

Uli, our helpful and supportive friend, has decided to part company with Akahum.  We're grateful for the gigs we've shared over the past 18 months or so, and wish him well for the future.  Good luck, Uli!

Hear one of our favourite tracks from ELECTWISTERY, Amber Temple, on Jerry Kranitz's ace online radio show, Aural Innovations, from Sunday 11th May, online for a week. http://aural-innovations.com/radio/radio.html

AKAHUM GOES GONG ... We're knocked out that Chris Cambridge and Daevid Allen have chosen our version of Fohat Digs Holes In Space to appear on Gong's soon-to-be-released "tributes" album, Zero's Heroes. You can currently hear the track at www.myspace.com/zerosheroescd, along with Will "Great Minds Think Alike" Greenwood 's version of the same track, and Bubbledubble's and Circle of Friends' inimitable homages to "I Tried So Hard".

This brilliant project is all thanks to the dynamic Chris Cambridge, who's putting the album together under the watchful eye of Daevid Allen. We can't wait to hear all the other free and fanciful renderings of Gong tracks by the weird and wonderful going Gong-like.

Speaking of Chris Cambridge, Akahum's David Unlimbo had a blast guesting with Shom at the Slang Farm party on Biddulph Moor on 2 May. It was great to see Hear & Now again ... Big respect to Mark (Bad Pot Noodle) for organising a great night. David won't be the only one hoping this cool event becomes a regular fixture in the festival calendar. Joyful greetings to everyone who was there.

MySpace News: The folks at Akahum and Worldvenue Towers are somewhat bewildered by the steady increase in visits and plays on the Akahum MySpace - we're regularly getting 500 plays a day now. Thanks to all you loyal and new friends. Incidentally, we've just notched up our 2000th friend - so congratulations to Sclavonia of Slaskie , Poland , from now on known to us as Sclavonia 2K! Cześc - Witajcie!!

Nov / Dec Tour Part 3

Hi. After Feddo's crazy radio show on  Sunday (2nd December) we spent a couple of days off in Amsterdam with Diffaith's friend Marcello & his family. It gave us some time to catch up on overdue sleep & eating. Thursday morning we set off for ORKZ in Groningen up in the very north of Holland. The last time we played there as UNLIMBO, ORKZ was still a squat. Since then it has acquired legal status and the venue, restaurant & bar have really benefited from the extra support. ORKZ is still great, and the people running it are still lovely. We had a delicious meal at the restaurant after the soundcheck and felt really up for a good gig. What a fantastic venue!

Well, we had a great time. The crowd wanted to dance all night and we played over two hours of material. Earlier that day we'd received a call that there was no gig at Leeuwarden for the Friday after all. The team at ORKZ got wind of this and asked us to play a second night there instead. Of course, we agreed.

Thanks for a brilliant second night, ORKZ! Saturday morning we set off for our final gig of the tour at Kultuurhuis Bosch in Arnhem. Bosch is another familiar place for us - we played there, too, as UNLIMBO. Paul & Ria made us feel really at home. It's a fantastic venue and project and we're looking forward to going back sometime in 2008.

Sunday night we set off for Dunkerque for our 02:00 ferry. Arriving at 01:00 to check in, we found all crossings had been cancelled due to high winds. By the time our ferry loaded up we'd been sitting in the van freezing for 6 hours! And when we landed in Dover we (of course) caught all the rush hour traffic that our tour-planning had been so careful to avoid. Ah, yes -  what should have been an easy 'round trip' from Dover to Bristol (Diffaiths new home) to Hereford (Lyndon's stop) to Carmarthen (chez David) ended up being a long winded drag. Oh, and Manny's (the van) clutch went somewhere in Bristol, so Lyndon & David made the remainder of the journey in a courtesy car while Manny was recovered by Green Flag to Wales. Something dramatic always has to happen at the end of our tours.....

Akahum Nov/Dec tour continued..

..>..>

Hi. We've just got to that point in our tour where we can take a few days off. Last night (Sunday) we played at Radio Patapoe Amsterdam on Feddo Renier's show, Psychedelicatessen.

Feddo

Feddo
Feddo
Feddo
It was a good laugh, Feddo is always really enthusiastic about music, and does a raw, unpolished show. There was only enough room for a minimal set-up, so no guitar or big percussion. We played a few tunes, did a session, he played a track off the new album, the rest of the evening Feddo span tracks from all over the psychedelic world. Thanks for a great evening Feddo. Lets go back about two weeks ...
Tuesday was our 'warm-up' gig with Uli at KTS in Freiburg. We saw lots of familiar faces from our visit in the Spring and it was a great night to start a tour as three again.

At the end of the night we had some extra percussionists & Moses DJing over the top. A nice session.

Wednesday was spent driving from Freiburg to Berlin, with a few unplanned stops thanks to police in a petrol station outside Wurzburg and three zoll officers outside Potsdam.

Once we got to Berlin, we would stay the next two nights with Uli's friend Jan.
Thursday was our first Berlin gig, Cafe Zapata, which is a really cool venue. It's part of a huge complex of restaurant, theatre, cafe and large yard with artist spaces and a semi-permanent dance tent.

Thursday nights aren't good in Berlin, but Cafe Zapata was a good place to start, thanks to Joanna and her team

Friday Akahum went to Halle, 3 hours south of Berlin. The club was Reil 78 - a small place on the outskirts of town with a reputation for parties. Giant, who runs the venue, fed us well and was a great host. There were plenty of people up for a dance and we had a good gig.

KTS
Saturday was disappointing. Black Box Club in Tiergarten Berlin. The manager, Corbett, was cool but the club had only been open a month and word still hadn't got around. We played a short set and made our way to Bethanien, our place to stay for the next few days.
Monday we played a last-minute gig at Bethanien, Berlin. Bethanien is a huge hospital that has been squatted since the Seventies, but is now more organised and accepted as part of the local community.

Michael, our friendly host at Bethanien, heard we were at a loose end so printed up flyers & posters on the Saturday and got a bigger crowd in for our Monday night gig than we got on the previous Saturday at Black Box! You can't predict these things at all. If you're in Kreuzberg (Berlin) I suggest you check it out. There's usually a cafe open or people's kitchen night where you can get a decent meal for a donation.
Tuesday was our gig at Noch Besser Leben, Leipzig. Dietrich & Anja run the venue and love music. After a quick bread/pickles/cheese/coffee break we set up and had to start almost straight away - gigs have to finish at Noch Besser Leben at 11 pm or the police pay a visit. Not a big crowd, but a good turnout for a Tuesday night.
Wednesday was our return gig at Immerhin, Wurzburg. It was a long drive from Leipzig down the new A71, but I can recommend the 7 Km tunnel it goes through. We had a great night at Immerhin. Being a small place, an audience of forty odd means wall-to-wall!

Akahum played two sets and three encores. Horst & Elke did a grand job of looking after us and sent us on our way the next morning with packed lunches and drinks. Thanks, Immerhin!
Thursday we played at Borsigallee in Frankfurt, a huge wagenplatz full of people who know how to party. We played about 3 hours for a happy crowd who just wanted to dance. Great night, thanks to Dan, Hannah & John.

Friday offered more than its fair share of major hindrances. We were meant to arrive at Turning Point, Herrenwies for late afternoon because we had to provide our own PA, so would need that extra time to set up our regular kit as well as a PA. Unfortunately we were delayed by about three hours, thanks to a roadside clutch repair and some more Zoll Patrol encounters...but we got it all done and everyone enjoyed the night.

Wolfgang & Cecil have been running Turning Point as a venue for 35 years. We ate like kings and slept in warm beds for a change.

On Saturday we played at Haus Mainusch in Mainz, our last German gig. Not a great turn out, but, hey, we got people dancing, so can't complain. Thanks to Wolf for looking after us in Mainz.

So that's it for now. We're off to Groningen on Thursday, We've played at ORKZ before, so we're looking forward to a good night.

Speak again soon,

Akahum.
