The National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus will hold a ceremony to remember those who lost their lives in the sea services during the Civil War.

The sailors and marines who gave their lives are often overlooked, and we want to make sure their service and sacrifice is remembered.

Join us at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 25. After an address in honor of the sailors and marines, uniformed sailors will fire the authentic naval cannon (a 7" Brooke Rifle) in lieu of a rifle salute, which is both more fitting and more impressive to observe!

After the event, hamburgers and hot dogs with be available for purchase.

Bill Dean of Ft. Payne, AL , below at left, dropped by Port Columbusthis week and donated a "Water Witch" marked Bible that had been in hisfamily for generations. It has the ship's name embossed in gold on thecover and a paper label inside indicating it was a gift to the shipfrom a society in New York City. It also features a handwritten, "MessNo. 1" and another indicating that the book was obtained during thecapture of the ship by Confederate sailors of the Savannah Squadron in1864.

The Bible will be on display during the ship's premier to the publicduring RiverBlast on April 4-5. For more information on RiverBlast, visit www.portcolumbus.org.

Looking for something to do once the turkey's gone?

For the first time, Port Columbus will have on display a 15-inch, 455-pound cannon ball from a Union Monitor-class ironclad ship. Due to the sheer weight and size, this cannon ball has never been displayed, but we brought it out for all of our visitors to be able to see and touch the largest cannon ball used in the Civil War.

Come see us and check it out, along with all of our other exhibits!

Port Columbus will be open Thanksgiving day and all weekend, from 9-5.
