Mudhoney with The Cynics - The Middle East (Cambridge, MA) - Friday, June 6, 2008

by Tim Bugbee
9 June 2008

If you are a garage rock freak, The Cynics are likely no stranger to your record collection, either by their own records, or the excellent Get Hip imprint run by guitarist GREG KOSTELICH. Not familiar with them, but have a passing interest in the Nuggets sound? Then by all means jump in with both feet. Greg's a riff machine, capable of full-on fuzz and some intricate, psych-styled finger work, whereas singer MICHAEL KASTELIC is a live wire, disguised as a curly-haired bundle of energy in impossibly tight black jeans. Overhead plumbing and kick drums were all fair game for Michael to clamber on to and off of. A lot of their set came from the excellent Rock N Roll record, such as the bouncy/catchy "Girl, You're On My Mind," the lament of "Now I'm Alone" (complete with Michael getting up close to the front row and giving the sad frown face), and quite possibly the song with the greatest scream in rock history, "Cry, Cry, Cry." Great to see these guys playing again, what a fun set.

I'm sorry kids!!
Whilst deleting one of the ubiquitous "Macys" adverts I must have accidently checked the wrong box and deleted our last two weeks of comments! This breaks my heart because there were some really great ones and I didn't get to respond to them!
I just wanted to let you know that it was an accident and we love you for keeping in touch!

I haven't been in touch as much as usual lately for two reasons. First, my mac has had some serious hard drive issues, (which the folks at "The Genius Bar" still cannot address!) and second, I've had a bout with sinusitis/bronchitis/laryngitis for the past week that has really been persistent!

We are leaving tomorrow for a European tour and I'm scared to death my voice won't be back by Wednesday for the first show! (if you are the prayin' kind or can work a spell/miracle , please do it for me now!)

Anyway, while we are back in Europe I will try to check in with you as much as possible. Unfortunately, I will have to set the "comments" to be 'approved' lest we be overrun with Macy's or Dating ads! I will approve comments and friend requests as quickly as I can, but it will be slower than usual for the next month or so.

You all know that we have the BEST FRIENDS in the WORLD! Get to Know each other and Take Care of each other! We hope to meet a lot of you in the next month as well as seeing old pals. We hope to meet/see the REST of you (of course Espana y Mexico!!) in the upcoming year!
Keep Sinnin',
Michael

CYNICAL SUMMER PT. 2 (slideshow posted now!)

So we had a dynamite 4th of July, what with Dr. Explosion, and Pibli playing with us for our friends in Madrid! Madrid has always been our real home and it was a super fab time as usual. La Boite was a hot hot club decked out in blood red with a neat circular ceiling design for the disco ball. Thanks to all of you for coming , we had a "blast" !! Ha! As always, thanks to Pepe/RecordRunner for making it all happen.

The next morning we are off to Italy, and it was quite a trip. We flew to Milan where we were picked up by trusty Julio, the Serbian Prince of Punk who would drive us to Salsamaggiore. It was a long drive but we had Jimmy and Pedro (the Fellini of Spain) with us from Madrid to keep the conversation loud and lively.

Salsamaggiore is a small, quiet, and beautiful town. I don't think they knew what hit them when the town was over run with fuzz monsters in tight pants and swinging girls in miniskirts!! The daily schedule consisted of brunch, cocktails, pool party, dj party, concert, and party well into the dawn. All the bands were great!!! The Phantom Keys were really groovy and it was so cool to hang out with them. The Urges really ripped up the stage on Friday and of course it's always a gas having some laughs with those lads.
Gianni, the promoter, is the greatest and we had a really good show. My dear friend Mathias even got to go go dance with the chicks while we played!! It was the best to have a swinging weekend with Matti and Harry!

We got to hook up with lots of good friends like Screaming Lord Gazza, Helvi, Javi, Alessandra, and even Wailin' Wazoo, Willy, & Murphy Morphine were there from Austria! Italy was hot and delicious! We had a hell of fantastic party at Festival Beat this year and we hope you did too!!

I posted a new slide show. It's really long so be patient if it has to load. (listen to a cynics record while you watch it!!) You can also click on "view all images" and when it takes you to slide.com if you click on "original view" you'll see the pics nice and big like they should be!!
Ciao for Now, Michael

CYNICAL SUMMER PT. 1

I WILL POST PICS OF ALL THIS WHEN I GET HOME IN MID JULY

Well here we are, back in beautiful Spain. Since my last blog, we have finished recording our new lp, which is scheduled to be out in late autumn. We recorded it in Gijon, one of my fave cities in the fucking world!!! We also had a magical evening there doing an acoustic show with our pals Dr. Explosion, Pibli, and Kaplan joining in on the fun.

We just played a fantastic electric show in Leon, Spain, right in Plaza Mayor!!! I usually don't like playing outdoors but this really sounded good with young and old attending and dancing. I got to hang out with Alicia, Raul,(aka Tod Tomorrow), and members of the Cynics cover band "The Kastelics" (The Cynics of Leon). They are so cool and Alicia has a great shop called 'ELEKTRA' with comics & rnr stuff. Most importantly, I got to see my dear Natalio, the singer from The Kastelics, who recently had his jaw broken by some asshole, when Natalio was just trying to break up a fight!!! (blessed be the peacemakers) He looks really good considering, his jaw is wired shut, and he's still in a lot of pain. I stayed in Leon an extra couple days and hung out with them, and Mikey Mongo (expat from nyc) who has a groovy club in Leon called "Mongogo". He's way cool!!!

So then I'm in Madrid, in the middle of "Europride" , the biggest gay pride fest in the whole world!!! I swear I didn't know about it! It's really funny though!! There are more gays here than in New York in the 70's (before Rude-E Ghouliani gentrified the city and turned it into Disneyland east). My joke d'jour was "Madrid used to smell like hash, now it just smells like ass!" I got a lot of milage out of it and I'll be here all week....ba dump bump.

Really, it doesn't smell like ass, but it Does smell like bad cologne. (I hate that shit, it makes me gag) It really is quite a spectacle though!! They shut down Gran Via!! There were kids laying down in the middle of Gran Via!! That's tantamount to shutting down 5th Ave in New York for New Years Eve!! There were millions of people on the streets (you couldn't even move!) and millions of dollars spent. It was really NUTS and I've never seen anything like it.

Tonight we party with The Ugly Beats, end of their tour party, and we play in Madrid on July 4th before going to Italy for Festival Beat.

I'll update this blog when I can but I just wanted to let you know what we're up to if I'm a little slow at answering messages/friend requests it's because I have to pay to get online and the connections are slow. Besides that, I'm very drunk all of the time!
LOVE YOU ALL, I'LL UPDATE AND POST PICTURES WHEN I CAN OR WHEN I GET HOME!!
Yer Pal, Michael

SXSW 2007 The Cynics Ruled...

We just flew back from Texas and boy are my arms tired...and my legs, and my feet, and my ears, which are still ringing! Since you are on myspace if you are reading this , you already know that there are an infinite number of Terrible bands out there. Well friends , SXSW is the 'virtual' terror of myspace, come to ubiquitious surround sound 'real life'. The problem is , you can't delete them , deny them , or even disable their players, because everywhere you turn there is another aural assault. Well, that's what I thought at first. However, after some self-medication and relaxation, it can turn out to be a fun ride.

We had taken a 5:30am flight to Texas and we were going to get only One practice with our first time bassist , drummer , organist , before playing 2 shows in one day. I was tired and cranky. Meeting up with Ethan (LiveFastDie,Some Action) in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport bathroom cheered me up a bit. As soon as we got to Austin, and I met Jeanine and Joe I knew it was gonna' be o.k. They exuded cool , but I was still tired and nervous. Joe Emery is on top of everything though. He's got everything planned out and rounds up/herds everybody just like his amazing pet jack russell terrier. Every band NEEDS someone like that. If only Everyone could be like that. That's your first step to success.

Let's see , I drank a lot , we practiced , and the next thing I know we're in a cool record store setting up too much equipment in too small a space. It was a blast!!! The crowd was really neat, and I got a cool Antone's t-shirt. If you add to that the fact that Greg Beets from the Austin Chronicle was there, and put my picture in the paper the next day with a fine write up , then you'd have one hell of a day. But the day was just beginning! I had a Gyro and watched The Downbeat Five do a perfectly swinging set. Then I passed out in the back of the van , breathing in the warm , moist , springtime Texas air, filled with music and whiffs of comfort cooking. I could drift off into a siesta because I knew that Joe E. had our afternoon timed and planned.

I came to consciousness as we are barreling towards the club that will host the Get Hip Cavalcade of stars. Once again , we really lucked out. The stars of Texas shone down on The Cynics. The Habana Calle 6 Patio was like the Playboy mansion, with rocks and waterfalls and a delightful young staff. Everyone that worked on or at the GH showcase did such a great job. The bands all ripped it up. The vivacious new line-up of The Breakup Society and the vibrant performance by The Ugly Beats left me bereft of 'v' words. Paul Collins was amazing. (I even got to see Buffy's new band Tiger Tiger as they played the inside club. I love them.)
I really had fun playing with Joe and Jeanine and Stephen from The Ugly Beats. I can't believe we just had one practice! They are real pros!! We saw friends from Mexico , Spain , Norway , and even Pittsburgh!! I hope you all had as much fun as I did!!!
After Friday was over I able to relax a little and just enjoy the spectacle for what it was, and it was vast. I'm having Tequila with the proprietor of Casino El Camino , Casino himself , and his lovely young concubine. Casino and I have known each other for decades and it was super chatting about the state of the world , music , and outdoor toilets I think...Anyway , if you are EVER in Austin , Casino El Camino is on 6th and it's the first place you need to go. Everything else will fall into place.

I burst through the swinging saloon doors and into the bright hot dust of 6th St. I hear hipster bands playing punk rock like they just discovered it yesterday and aren't aware of it's more exotic and subtle roots. I hear other hipsters screaming over what sounds like video game noises. I see pizza that is 8 dollars a slice. I over hear youngsters talking about what they called "rehab bands". (too funny!)
"Did you see those Creases in his face?" "I know! But I really don't need to see all his veins popping out" "He should wear a shirt" "Did you see the Saints? It was so sad..." "At least the Beasts of Bourbon had some life in 'em"

I hope I'm not in a "rehab band"

I talk to some kid about Liz Phair and the current 'direction' of Matador...I never want to talk about music again...Maybe the term 'irony' could be used correctly here in that the best thing about SXSW is talking to old and new friends about music , but you can't really talk because some terrible band is playing too loud. I'm swept back into Casino's and I'm drinking with The Ponys. One of my fave bands!! I love talking to them. Then I'm with Mikey from Delilah's Bar (your first stop in Chicago of course) and Connie (a.k.a. Savage Lady). We are off to see The Buzzcocks at Emo's. I am holding Connie's hand and she is holding Mike's as he parts the packed crowd like the proverbial Red Sea and we're pushed against the front of the stage. I feel bad 'cuz I know that's so rude , but no one said a word! I'm avoiding eye contact tho' as The Buzzcocks BOUND onto the stage, all at the same time, and tear into "Boredom" , then straight into "Fast Cars" , even "Breakdown". I've never seen Pete Shelly soo bouncy. Like a monochrome black soccer ball he wasn't still for a second. I figured he was in love again and I cried when he did all the love songs , Lipstick,Promises,What Do I Get,etc... Later I heard there was a rumor he died of a heart attack the night before and he was just glad to be alive! Seeing The Buzzcocks always makes me glad I'm alive!!

I know I saw LiveFastDie , I know I talked a lot of trash with a lot of good people , and I know I saw my friend Benji's band The Creteens and I know he showed me what french kissing is all about...I wish I could list all the anecdotes now...maybe later.

The moral of my story is , I guess it's easier to hang out at SXSW than to work there, but I wouldn't go unless I was there to work so...It's the BEST and BIGGEST indie fest in the U.S. if you have the right attitude.
I'm sure we'll do it again. Thanks again to Joe , Jeanine , and Stephen , for playing with us and making it all happen!
Love On Ya' , Michael

ALL RIGHT KIDS!!!
Everything here in Gijon is just too great to describe!!
The record sounds fucking fantastic and working with Dr. Explosion is a real BLAST!! He is producing , engineering , and playing on the recording all at once! We also have some new friends playing with us , Pibli , on drums , and Kappy, on bass. They are so talented and so much fun (Pibli constantly cracks Gregg up) that we decided to play a show here with them at The Savoy Club on Monday.
If you've never been to Gijon , don't tell anyone about it, so the secret doesn't get out. It's like a constant festival of parades , music , food, (mmmmmm... you know I love my croquetas!) and of course , intoxicating beverages.
My hotel room , or anywhere in the city really , is just a stone's throw from a beautiful beach. The people here know how to live, and appreciate life's most important virtues. It's all about friends , love , and having fun. I wish every one of you could be here!!
Love all WAYS!! , Michael

Yeah , I know everybody says that , but if you have a moment you should scroll through the past comments that we've gotten since we went on myspace (c'mon , it's only 12 pages or so since we went up Aug. 8th). You'll meet the coolest People and the most happening Bands in the world!! We're not out to collect 20 thousand billion friends who don't give a shit about Garage punk Trash or The Cynics. All the folks on our pages are true music lovers. Even if it's not the kind of music I would listen to, I can tell you that they are sincere and honest.

And that goes for all the bands as well! I'm constantly amazed at the talent and youthful energy that is out there , and I haven't even scratched the surface. I really enjoy hearing you all so thanks for sharing your art and life with us!!!! Troll and scroll through our pages and click on any band or person and I'll bet you'll find a cool new friend!!

We put up 'Get May Way' and it should be downloadable in a day or so. We will rotate songs every month or so, so if your profile song disappears ,sorry for the inconvenience , and check out the new posted tunes. We've gotten requests for the song "Revenge" but for now check out the awesome cover version of it by our dear friends from Croatia , The Nice Boys (www.myspace.com/theniceboysdontplayrocknroll)

We're planning to record a new studio record this winter in Spain , a country that has been like our Familia for 2 decades!! More on that later...
Love On Ya'!! THE CYNICS
