Despite equipment failure during The Skuzzie's acoustic set at the Hackney Empire after-show party, Jerome and the boys still came through, winning applause from the crowd. And that's how the 12 months had pretty much panned out. Despite the odds The Skuzzies prevailed. Triumph of the year had to be the Joe Strummer Benefit at Inn On the Green on December 22nd. Whilst an artist painted a portrait of Strummer on one side of the room, a raft of notables, including Taurus Trakker, Raincoat Gina Birch and the inimitable Mick Jones guesting with the Rotten Hill Gang, graced the stage. The Skuzzies played a lightning set, converting non-believers who'd stepped in from the bar to give them the once over. Terry who'd seen the Heartbreakers in 1977 and reminded me that johnny Thunders had once stood on his hand, bopped around like a belligerant Santa whilst Mick Jones sidled out frrom backstage to watch The Skuzzies. It was that kind of night. For Jerome, Christmas came early when Jones invited him on stage to play 'Bank Robber'. Outside, a gentle frost settled on Ladbroke Grove, inside everyone remembered Joe Strummer, the ghosts of squats and dreams of freedom that the neighborhood kept like a hidden secret. January 2009 saw a new location, Brighton. Not one of the usual Skuzzie haunts but the spectral, fire damaged piers and desolate Regency squares possessed a frozen elegance. Tucked at the bottom of a narrow alley way, The Latest Music Bar was more familiar territory even if the gig, a spoken word event wasn't. The normally reclusive author, Nina Antonia, was giving a reading of 'Johnny Thunders - In Cold Blood' and asked Jerome to play guitar, orchestrating the drama of Thunder's stormy life. The following day, in the bar of the Pelirocco, Brighton's premier rock n' roll hotel, Jerome fuelled by a 'White Russian' played an impressive acoustic set that included a cover of Boyd Rice's ''Disneyland Can Wait. Nina, meanwhile, enlivened by a 'Soul Supreme' - a mix of Remy Martin, Kahlua and cream - read from her NY Dolls biography 'Too Much Too Soon'.  Appreciation goes to Jay Clifton and Tight Lip Literary Events for the whole sojourn. As for The Skuzzies, they are taking a well earned rest, recording, and will return with the spring.

         THE SKUZZIES VS PEACHES GELDOF

I cant beleive what im actually hearing as I approach Notting Hill and its not until I get into Alan Mcgee's Death Disco that I find it is true I will explain....It must of been about 8.45 pm when I got out of my freinds car to buy some chewing gum (Ever tried to park in Notting Hill ?)and I enter a corner shop when in front of me there is a girl who is laughing down the phone and it is then that I hear the words" Peaches Geldof is playing Death disco Tonight!".........The first thing that enters my head is  that The Skuzzies must have cancelled!!! Bastards why didnt they tell me ,I get my  my freind to park on the corner, jump out of the car and ask the girl on the door wether the skuzzies are still playing ..when she says yes I wave to my freind and walk into the club thinking this is some sort of wind up and maybe the girl in the shop has got it wrong.I cant see any of the Skuzzies but out of the ram-packed crowd I recognize Alan Mcgee,Gary (who used to drum for the Libertines and now for Dirty Pretty things) and is accompained by band mates Carl Barat and Anthony Rossamando,Tim Burgess from the Charlatans and Street poet Belowsky. Its incredibly hot and my freind who's just finished parking for the last ten minutes grabs us both drinks when I see Jerome appear exchanging a hug with Alan Mcgee and having a chat with Gary so I go over and ask the inevitable "I didnt even know!" Jerome laughs "Ive only  just been told myself " Nick is with him and has a very mischevious grin on his face that says it all. This Tawdry Affair (Peaches aptly named group) are the first to go onstage, Peaches is playing Bass and there is the obligatory keyboard player (Seems like every group this day has to have one) and a vocalist who looks like that model Agneyss Deyn (or however you spell it).Now I try very hard to keep an open mind as I am here to see The Skuzzies..But there is no stage prescence,no movement,no riffs, and no catchy songs which probably means they will be signed up very soon and every song is soooo slow it makes Joy Division sound like a speedcore band. There are also paparazzi trying to get in but its just aswell they didnt as they may have thought This Tawdry Affair were wax statues stolen fom Madame Tussad's,Really their performance make shoe-gazing look like fun.The Audience politely clap and I can judge by the expressions on their faces that they feel as if they have been here forever. And then a sigh of relief! I look up and theyve gone! simply vanished(Now that is impressive) The Dj now starts to play The Clash's "Train in Vain" and the audience dance with Joy as if theyve been trapped in a prison and finnaly set free!"wow a beat everyone can dance too" someone says next to me and the whole floor get down. The Dj (Alan Mcgees son or so I am told) plays the perfect mix of Punk,Indie,Reggae etc which  sets the mood for The Skuzzies perfectly."So do you want it?" Jerome bellows down the mic and The audience hollers back with  The Band immediatly breaking into "Anthem" and then without pausing "Salome's corner" transforming the dull lifeless energy with their full -on roughneck rythyms.By now the crowd a wonderfull mix of Black and white are Jumping up and down with a rebel stance that can only come from The street and even peaches Posse are trying to join in ,The girl herself standing watching from the safety of the Dj's booth."Dissatisfied" is electric tonight its rythym punching a hole through the speakers followed by "Its not Love" a blistering crescendo of melody and rage. After the pop-punk excellence of "Shotgun Romance" (Which I hear some drunken girls singing outside after the club) Mc Scholar Jumps onto the stage and the band break into "Wary Days" which sounds like Roni Size and The Specials having fisticuffs on Deptford high street and has the whole club bouncing up and down and some which are doing a mix of slam dancing and break dancing (A new trend perhaps?).Then the band stop and with a cheeky grin on Jerome's face he announces the next number "This song is called Rich girls..and its guess it doesnt take a genius who were going to dedicate this one too!!!" The Whole crowd burst into laughter and Peaches looks pissed big time and for a breif second celebrity culture was shown up as The Tawdry affair it really is.After a Rapturous applause The Skuzzies returned for the encore "Psychosexual" Nick Beating the shit out of his Drums,Al throwing his bass against the wall and Jerome hitting the strings until his fingers bled .Afterwards I tell the band this has been by far the best show Ive ever seen them play and me and my compadre for the evening stagger out of death disco almost tripping on This Tawdry affair's  brand spanking new equipment and laughing at the thought of knowing that this will be a gig to remember for all the right reasons...

Its a moody hot friday night in July and my cab driver has his radio on full blasting Kate Nash which lets face it, is seriously asking for some verbal abuse especially as being working class! this guy should know better and I realise that theres no chance that this man is getting a tip unless he decides to let go of the fare and maybe... just then we will be even. After more torture from the kooks and Joe Dolce I finnaly arrive at the Paradise which is a beautiful Victorian house/club which has spectacular decor and has been given a Haunting Burlesque and voodoo type vibe with old bookshelves, skulls, paintings and Candelabras. There are tons of rooms and a Balcony where one can indulge in a smoke or  by the looks of things whatever anyone chooses! nobodys really holding back tonight and the bouncers dont seem to mind either way so considering this is the era where lighting a fag in the road gets you a dirty look then this club is definteley ahead of the rest. After getting a drink from the bar I head towards the backstage room to see The Boys and just as I get to the door when I hear a voice I know well shout"so youre just going to sit in our room..chop up lines and not offer us any???well you can just fuck off then" next thing I know a huge bald man is pushed out the door by Jerome and Alan Wass (who are both a tad mash up)and sent careening down the stairs when a bouncer arrives and just turns and grins explaining that "That man comes here every, week blags his way backstage with drugs and then offers the band's girlfreinds coke hoping to cop off, but wont offer the bands fuck all" and that "he had it coming" Jerome meanwhile invites me in and introduces me to some freinds and to the bands new mc (Scholar) who is a really cool guy and Al Whiteside who is the bands original bassist and is happy to return to the fold and as I find out later is perfect for the band, both  members making the show reach a new peak in its raw energetic flow. The tension in the air I realise isn't only out on the street tonight as the place is rammed and people are getting hot and sweaty and the more people come backstage the more agitated the band gets,Nina Antonia is sitting next to Nick Lewest (drums) and offers me a seat.Nick and Jerome are talking about a band Nick describes as a "bag of mince" and start to giggle like naughty school boys  when Gus(the man behind tonights show and who is dressed like a Pirate who's studied the black arts) tells the boys its time to play.As he introuduces the band over a dark soundtrack the packed out crowd cheer and the band slam into "Anthem" with Jerome and Al laying into their guitars whilst singing harmonies and Nick bashing the drums with furious might, and straight into  the bleak tale of"Salome's corner" which draws on the night's crooked and seductive flow with the girls gyrating like they did at Orpehus's demise.Faves "Shotugun Romance" and "Dissatisfied" have the crowd entranced with their poppy choruses and I notice many of them are singing along,Whilst new songs "Deja-vu" and "Its not love" leave everyone wondering how they can top it when Mc Scholar jumps onstage and the band launch into the Drum n Bass frenzy of "Wary days" to the sneering "Rich girls" bringing the show to a grand finale.Exhausted the boys head back to the backstage room whilst I go and order a drink totally blown away by their flawless set.Next up is Alan Wass joined by Jerome for a version of "Hired gun"  which is a folk/rock n roll classic and continue to thrill the crowd whilst near a state of collapse like the true rock n roll braves that they are.By the time Alan's set is over I go to congratulate everyone on the show  but there's a stone cold silenece suggesting something or other has gone down, whatever it is has obviously been rectified as I come back fifteen minutes later and everyone is in good spirits and I tell the band that without a doubt this is by far the best line-up ever and that the skuzzies despite hard times have bounced back full circle and are better than ever.Jackson Scott and  Jerome are deep in conversation ,One has to say its not easy to watch Jackson's flamenco vibe after the rock and roll display thats just gone down so I make a promise that I will  go and see him perfom next time he plays London. I go over to talk to Nina who hands me the Skuzzies new "Dissatisfied E.p" Bid her and the boys goodnight and tell  the cab driver to stick on the most exciting band in london in his cd player and head home.

THE SKUZZIES BORDERLINE SHOW (By Suzzane.H)

It's a cold friday night on february the 22nd and I'm getting hassled on Charring Cross road to buy a rose from a young man who's breath smells of onions. I push past him and slip down a narrow alley leading to The Borderline. The security seem quite nice and escort me past the pictures of the bands that have graced the stage and since become legend(Oasis,The Verve,Janes Addiction)and down to the backstage area to have a natter with The Skuzzies.Jerome and Nina are sitting in the dressing room and there's tension in the air..."look at those fucking tossers" Jerome says showing me the front cover of The Fly magazine which features those smug accountant lookalikes The Young Knives. " How can anyone like that shit? They should be working in a fucking bank not playing music,They're new Labour's wet dream" says Jerome. I have to agree with him. The lead singer looks a lot like my doctor and they are certainly not young.  "I dont mind if a band look shit and play good music but the Young Knives don't even do that" Jerome adds, before throwing a glass at the wall. "The Skuzzies exist as an antidote to all the happy let's pretend everything is great bullshit like Mika,Kate Nash,Scouting for Girls etc"  As Jerome told me before the gig. "The buzz I get from an audience is when they tell me how much they love our energy onstage, cos thats exactly what was on the agenda when I started this group.Lets face it Joe Strummers dead,Johnny Thunders is dead,Joey Ramone all these guys played every show like it was their last. I hate comfortable bands  Rock n Roll should be about excitment not ease".Nick and Ill Spectre arrive and its clear that everyone wants some space so I head towards the stage, the first thing I notice is how much The Skuzzie's Fan Base has grown its ram-packed tonight. The DJ spins Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers"Chinese Rocks" and at midnight the band strole onto the stage to excited hollering from the crowd,The minute they burst into the opening number 'Ice Cold' . The audience are jumping up and down and one of the security leans over and shouts in my ear "Its been a while since I've seen an audience enjoy themselves so much" A testament to how stale most bands have become. 'Must be more (The Anthem)' is a steady Clash/Ramones type rocker with Nick le West pummeling the drums and 'Dissatisfied' is a Funk/Punk mash up which I find myself whistling on the bus on the way home! New song 'Wary Days' reveals a more melodic Trip/hop edge and of course they end with the sneering 'Rich girls' with lines like "do what you do best... and open up your purse"  delivered with complete contempt from Jerome and Ill Spectre.I catch up with the group afterwards and they are in great spirits, giggling like school kids, I now realise that this group use tension on stage like a magician uses emotion in a ritual.
