................................

.. ..

Thursday 22nd October @ BB Kings saw New York and the rest of the world for that matter, came together for what was the greatest event I have ever witnessed. The Grand Master Roc Raida Tribute. I have never seen so much unity, love and respect in one room! All to tribute a World Champion DJ, great father, family man and friend. RIP Grand Master Roc Raida. ....

.. ..

I was so happy to be in ....New York.... for this memorable event along with Tony Prince (Founder of DMC). ....

.. ..

Many of the greatest turntablists on planet Earth gathered at BB Kings to re-create Roc Raida’s routines throughout his battling/DJ career and to pay tribute to this legend. It took me a few days after the event to even come up with what I wanted to say about the event, because if I am honest it left me completely speechless.....

.. ..

Where do I start?....

.. ..

BB Kings was full to the brim of 900+ people all there for one reason. ....

.. ..

Tony Prince got up on stage to a full house to introduce the incredible DJs who were about to perform. It was great hearing Tony shouting Roc Raidaaaaaaaaaaaaaa like he did in1995, the year he won the DMC World Championship, and I know how many of the DJs loved having Tony on stage!  ....

.. ..

The night kicked off with tributes by the X-Ecutioners – Rob Swift, Boogie Blind, Total Eclipse, Mista Sinista and Precision. Boogie Blind in particular blew me away; these guys are truly the best! Raida would have been so proud of them all. ....

.. ..

The stage was full and crowded! As I looked around on stage and saw the super star line up, I realised this was a one off event and was unlikely to ever happen again!....

.. ..

Paying their tributes to the Grand Master was former DMC World Champions A-Trak who performed Raida’s ‘Push It Routine’ and DJ Craze who performed ‘Ugly People Be Quiet’ and ‘Sucka MCs’. I don’t know what it is about Craze, but I could watch him for hours, he oooozed personality and flare as he always does and smiled throughout his set, his re-creations were out of this world, he makes it look way too easy! ....

.. ..

Newly crowned DMC World Champion DJ Shiftee stepped up with one of my favourite Raida routines – ‘Chief Rocka’. ....

.. ..

The Beat Junkies DJ Babu performed ‘Going Back To Cali’ and Shortkut performed ‘I Got To Have It’.....

.. ..

DJ I-Dee re-created ‘Bring It Here’, DJ Dummy performed ‘Bridge Is Over’. ....

I loved how all the DJs incorporated Raida’s body tricks, it was so special, and every single DJ who performed was amazing. ....

.. ..

There were two screens on either side of stage that aired tribute videos to Raida. Personal videos, on tour documentaries, DMC footage, messages from the likes of DJ Premier, Jazzy Jeff and Mix Master Mike. It was so touching, and I could feel everyone in BB Kings felt the same way I did. ....

.. ..

The night was an emotional roller coaster, brimming with happiness and joy and sad and tearful the next, all within the space of 3 hours. ....

.. ..

Other performances on the night came from the Almighty Beat Junkies (Babu, J.Rocc,  Rhettmatic and Shortkut) who performed a tribute set, amazing amazing performance. It was so good to see all the Beat Junkies in the building! I love these guys.....

.. ..

The inventor of the Beat Juggle and X-Men founder ‘Steve Dee’ stepped up to stage to perform as well as Roli Rho of the 5th Platoon. ....

.. ..

The night’s hosts were Kinetic NRG and Lord Sear. Fantastic party rocking sets were provided by Z-Trip, J.Rocc and  Spin One (who runs a show alongside DJ Fatfingaz and DJ Yonny) on alistradio.net and their show that I have been a guest on now numerous times is Table Manners, so big shouts to the Table Manners crew!....

.. ..

One of the highlights for me alongside Craze and Boogie Blind was the phenomenal ‘Rock The Bells’ circle. This was truly outstanding! DMC Legend and one of my fav men in the world: DJ Cash Money got up, everyone chanting his name! Rock The Bells included – Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, Total Eclipse, A Trak, DJ Scratch, Boogie Blind, Cash Money, Total Eclipse, Sean C, Precision, Craze and more!....

.. ..

I could have stayed at BB Kings till daylight, and I think the DJs and everyone in the building would have too! ....

.. ..

Busta Rhymes came onto stage and brought Tyesha (Raida’s wife) and two of their beautiful children up one by one. He talked about Raida, touring with him, how they have become close and close to his beautiful family. It was just something else.....

.. ..

Many other attendees included: Kool Herc, Lord Finesse, Large Professor, Johnny Juice, Scram Jones, Scribble, IXL, Eclipse, Infamous, Klever, J-Smoke, DJ Slyce, IXL, Immortal Technique and so many many more plus Roc Raida’s mother and family on his side and in laws.....

.. ..

It was great to also see my friends Christie Z, Sondra, Marilyn, Cutfucious, Marcus, Fatfingaz (ouuuuuuuuuuuw), Rugged One, Esquire, Yom, Russell, Matty Mcfly, Ty Handswell and anyone who I have missed I am sorry, there were too many people there!....

.. ..

Huge respect and props to Sugarcuts, Sean C, Pro and everyone that put together and worked on the event. ....

.. ..

Much love and respect to Tyesha and their beautiful family.....

.. ..

RIP ROC RAIDA. MUCH LOVE....

For 25 incredible boundary pushing, trend setting, scratched, cut and mixed years, the world’s largest DJ organization, DMC, has been the authority on the DJ battle. The DMC’s annual World DJ Championship competition brings together the world’s brightest DJ talents, vetted by a series of gruelling global heats. By doing so, DMC continues to host one of the most entertaining and jaw dropping shows you will ever witness. This year’s show is no different. In the 25th Anniversary of this prestigious competition, DMC is bigger than ever.

On September the 11th and 12th, the Indig02 will see the DJ event of the year shake the very foundations of the entire infamous Dome. For the 25th Anniversary the stakes are higher than ever for the winners of this momentous year. And DMC are pulling all the stops to make sure this is not just a competition, but in the true essence of the DJ, a party to remember. With competitors from over 30 countries spanning the globe, the truly international DMC is bigger than ever

To kick start the weekend correctly, Friday, September 11th’s proceedings see the exhilarating Battle For Supremacy take place, with last year’s World Champion DJ Switch defending his title against the planet’s very best Supremacy title holders, including this year’s UK winner – DJ Rasp. The Team Battles also take place on the day, determining who will follow in the footsteps of the competition’s greats of previous years – from France’s C2C, Scratch Perverts and the Allies.

.. ..

In between the intense battles, the charismatic DJ Yoda will present a special live AV performance detailing the 25 Years of DMC, in his own ingenious way. This is bound to be a one-off, extremely exciting performance that is not to be missed! DJ I-Dee will also be showcasing the brand new Numark NS7 on the night, using state of the art Serato Itch software – a World’s first!  Jehst and Micall Parknsun follow up their storming UK Final set, returning with an energetic, unbeatable performance that you cannot miss.

On Saturday September 12th, DJ Jeppa will be flying the British flag in the DJ Championship World Final, as the worlds best DJs compete for the ultimate accolade! Pioneering legend and former DMC World Champion, DJ Q Bert will be flying over to perform on the night, and Rob Swift (Ill Insanity / X-Ecutioners) will be showcasing Scratch Live, as presented by sponsors Rane and Serato. Current World Champ DJ Fly will also be showcasing his talents.

And of course the winners will not leave empty handed - Champions over the two days have treats a-plenty in store. The bounty that awaits them will include prizes from Panasonic and Technics, Numark NS7, Drunknmunky clothing, Rane TTM57Sl mixer, Rane SL3’s, CKIN2U goodies, Gold Disc awards, Ortofon needles and DMC are bringing back the much sought after classic Champion jackets for the 25th Anniversary.

At the end of the night, to round off the 25th Anniversary celebrations in style, DMC have invited a myriad of the best of the best to perform together in one massive SUPER JAM! Q Bert, Rob Swift, DJ Fly, Shiftee and Switch. Hosted by the world famous Killa Kela, it is going to be legendary as the experienced winners go back to back with the new world champs.

DMC's Sally McLintock
THE DMC USA DJ FINALS - Rocking The Big Apple

What was the highlight of New York's biggest DJ event of the year last weekend?
"Being at the US Finals itself was a highlight for me. I love being in New York and at the event and seeing the different flavour the US has to offer - and of course, watching Kool DJ Red Alert hosting the DMC's again!"

Tell us about the DMC feature in the New York Times?
"I'm so happy for Christie and DMC USA. The Finals made the New York Times, which is amazing, it's rare for events of our nature to make the NY Times. I brought back a couple of copies, one for me and one for Tony Prince."

What legends did you bump into at The Crotona Park Jam in The Bronx Sally...?
"Dan it was unreal. I wanna be back at Crotona Park! I met Kool Herc, Biz Markie, Tony Tone from the Cold Crush Brothers, Grandmaster Caz, Lord Finesse, DJ Scratch, I bumped into Steve Dee too. So many legends just hanging out enjoying the Hip Hop, it's everything I imagined Hip Hop back in the day to be."

I hear you were on the A List Radio 'Table Manners' show in New York - what was that like? Does Terry Wogan have to start quaking in his shoes?
"I love being on radio Dan, no lie! It was great, I was there, Christie Z who organises DMC USA, Fat Fingaz (DMC US host, and DMC enthusiast), Donnie D (US Finalist judge) and two of the DMC US Finalists - DJ Lodus and DJ Ohm. We did a two hour show, which will be available to watch again on www.dmcdjchamps.com in a few days! Terry Wogan…watch this space!"

Who is your favourite turntablist ever?
"That would be DJ Craze for me without a doubt. I love watching him perform, he just becomes part of the turntable."

Best ever Turntablist Performance?
"I absolutely loved C2C's 2005 performance, I loved the showmanship and the musicality of these guys, they truly are amazing artists…"

The most underrated Turntablist who hasn't won a world title?
"The most underrated DJ to not win a World DMC title in my opinion is DJ Woody or DJ Dexter from his 2000 World Final set when he came runner up to Craze…"

So. A monumental event. Shiftee from NYC crowned again - but I understand there's a West Coast dude right behind him...?
"Indeed, first of all congratulations to Shiftee though. He was excellent and a contender for this year's title I'm sure. Runner up went to Mista B from San Francisco who is part of the 4onefunk crew - I loved his set, so musical and funky. He definitely deserved runner up, watch out for Mista B."

Why haven't you moved to New York - you are the DMC Turntable Queen?
"Ha ha! Dan. I would love to move to NYC. Not sure the DMC family would be too happy about that one though would they?"

What is the greatest thing DMC has brought to the DMC / Turntable / Hip Hop world?
"The platform that is there for the DJ once they win that World title. I'm so proud of DMC and so happy to be such a main part in this event. DMC are truly one of the DJ pioneers and longest running DJ organisation, plus we care about the DJ and the artform."

What was it like witnessing our host DJ Red Alert for the first time - back in the day during the 80s you were far too young to have seen him, what were your impressions of the Hip Hop maestro?
"Yes I was never allowed to come along to the Royal Albert Hall days when I was like 8. I wouldn't have been a pain though, I would have been as quiet as a mouse!!! But it was amazing to watch Red on stage instead of watching the footage! Hearin his famous ayyyyyyy yooooo, and what a brilliant year for him to host being the 25th anniversary year"

What is the best thing about New York?
"The people, being an English girl in New York, the Hip Hop park jams and I have some great friends out there."

Who is going to win the titles at DMC 2009 in your opinion?
"There are so many surprises each year Dan - any country can win, which is why DMC is such a great event. Everyone needs to come down and witness the show DMC are planning for the 25th anniversary World Final, its gonna be a very special year. See you there people..."

In the 25th Anniversary of this prestigious competition, DMC is bigger than ever…

Kicking off 2009’s UK events, the UK DJ Final and Battle For UK Supremacy takes place at the 02 Academy Islington on Thursday 9th July with the winners going head to head with the best in the world at the World DJ Championships at the Indig02 on September 11th and 12th.

To become a DMC World Champion, DJs around the world use techniques such as
scratching and cutting to manipulate turntables and vinyl in order to create their own musical arrangements, performing live in front of an enthusiastic audience filled with both the extremely knowledgeable DMC fans and lucky newcomers being initiated to this fantastic contest.

The standards will be set on the night as two previous DMC World Champions collaborate for an amazing dual display of battling in its purest, most ferocious essence as DJ Switch and DJ Shiftee take to the wheels of steel to show how it’s done.

With World Championship winners over the years including the superstar likes of the Scratch Perverts, A-Trak (Kanye West’s DJ), Q Bert, Craze and Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), fame and respect could well accompany the bountiful prizes on offer.

And speaking of prizes - a veritable treasure trove awaits the winner. Full details of the prizes are yet to be announced, but there have been confirmed goodies provided by sponsors Calvin Klein.

In between the turntable mastery, the one and only Jehst will be performing an extremely special set in anticipation of his forthcoming album. He will be joined by Micall Parknsun, performing his banging new single ‘All 4 Hip-Hop’ and former DMC competitor DJ Jazz T.

Charismatic host Inja will also be launching his brand new smash single ‘Hat Low’ exclusively at the DMCs, featuring a special live guest appearance from the incredible SkinnyMan.

The Battle for UK Supremacy will also take place on the night, where past UK Champs go head-to-head for a place to compete in the Champions League of the DJ world in September, a competition that will determine who goes home as the universal winner of all winners…

DMC: A Brief History

From its humble DJ record service beginnings in the early 80s, to establishing magazines, a street wear brand and music compilation CDs [including Back to Mine, described by NME magazine as 'probably the greatest compilation series ever'], DMC has been vital in the growth of the DJ as a highly influential modern day cultural icon.

DMC redefined the role and image of the turntablist, believing strongly in the idea that the DJ could create something new and exciting armed with nothing but two decks, a mixer and healthy selection of vinyl.

25 years of hard fought battles later, and DMC has built an army of dedicated followers worldwide, housing successful branches and competitions in 25 countries. In the UK, host venues have included The Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena ,The Millennium Dome, Brixton Academy and the Hammersmith Apollo. Whilst the Championship Finals were staged internationally in Italy, Paris and New York, the spiritual home for the DMC World DJ Championship has become London. With DMC making appearances everywhere from Richard and Judy and Blue Peter to MTV and even being entwined within the plot of an episode of CSI: NY, it is clear to see the organization’s impact on popular culture.

Many great names have taken part over the years and are now etched forever within the historic visual series of DVD’s and on the DMCWORLD.COM web site’s DMC Hall of Fame. The inspirational performances of the world champions have advanced the art of turntablism and go down in the history books for pushing the limits of what humans can do with technology.

2009’s UK Finalists battling it out for a coveted place in September’s World Finals are to be announced as soon as all the regional finals are finished.
