Article posted October 12, 2008 - 01:35 AM
WASHINGTON - President Bush and foreign financial officials displayed joint resolve Saturday to combat the unfolding financial crisis, hoping to calm investors whose panic has spread despite bold and accelerating government action.

Yet there was no concrete offer of new moves when Bush spoke on a Rose Garden stage just after daybreak, flanked by representatives from nearly a dozen nations and international organizations. The fresh message of the day was Bush's plea that nations work together to address the crisis, avoiding the go-it-alone protectionist trade strategies that worsened conditions during the Great Depression.

"In an interconnected world, no nation will gain by driving down the fortunes of another. We are in this together. We will come through it together," Bush said. "There have been moments of crisis in the past when powerful nations turned their energies against each other or sought to wall themselves off from the world. This time is different."

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Bush's commitment to collaborative action was repeated and agreed to by every official and minister who took part in a private White House meeting before the statement. Participating in that session with the president were top officials from the Group of Seven powers — the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada — as well as from the European Union, World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Bush did not mention any specific action that prompted his call. But Ireland recently moved to guarantee all bank deposits, triggering similar actions in Germany and other countries concerned that nervous depositors would move their bank accounts to Ireland.

The president barely referenced a significant new step from his administration — partial nationalization of some banks. After days of speculation this move was coming, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced late Friday night that the government would buy part ownership in an array of American banks.

President Hoover tried something like that in 1932 during the Great Depression. No detail was provided about how the new approach would work, only that it was similar to Britain's move to pour cash into its troubled banks in exchange for stakes in them. The U.S. government would use an unspecified portion of the $700 billion approved by Congress a week ago to purchase stocks in a wide variety of banks and other financial institutions.

The rescue program originally was sold to Congress and the public as a plan to buy mortgage-related loans from financial institutions. The goal was to remove troubled assets from those institutions' books and inspire them to restart more normal lending operations.

Congress passed the massive and hard-fought legislation, and Bush signed it. The government raised the amount of bank deposits it insured. Billions of dollars of reserves have gone into banking systems in the U.S. and other countries. Yet credit, the economy's lifeblood, has remained virtually frozen.

This paralysis in the credit markets has translated into intense turmoil in the stock markets. The Dow Jones industrial average just completed its worst week in history, plummeting more than 18 percent. Over the past year, people in the U.S. have watched $8.4 trillion drain from investment accounts and retirement savings.

So the administration decided to use the bailout bill to pump equity directly into the banks — an idea never mentioned during the congressional debate. The administration says it is authorized in an obscure corner of the 400-page legislation.

Officials are not saying how long it will take to get this program under way — just as is the case with the even more complicated effort to buy mortgage-backed securities.

Bush seemed to acknowledge that the lag is feeding anxiety on Wall Street. "These extraordinary efforts are being implemented as quickly and as effectively as possible," Bush said. "The benefits will not be realized overnight."

The White House session with Bush followed a three-hour meeting Friday night of G-7 finance ministers. The president largely echoed their terse statement, saying the nations have together pledged to "do what it takes to resolve this crisis."

Among their promises are preventing the failure of major banks, unfreezing credit markets, bolstering deposit insurance programs, getting the battered mortgage financing system to operate more normally and working with poorer but fast-growing nations that also are feeling the pinch.

To address this last pledge, Paulson scheduled a meeting Saturday evening of the Group of 20 countries — which include the G-7 plus the world's biggest developing countries such as China, Brazil and India — to explain recent actions by the U.S. and other wealthy allies.

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said she saw the discussions as a way to help emerging-market countries understand actions by wealthier nations so they can be included in solutions and "if they wish, adopt the same principles."

All the representatives are in Washington for weekend meetings of the 185-nation International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

In a briefing for the IMF's policy-setting board, Paulson said that after the immediate crisis "we must turn our attention to longer-term reforms to modernize our outdated financial regulatory structure."

It was the 22nd day among the past 27 that Bush had spoken about the financial crisis, since evidence first arose that the year-old subprime mortgage mess was evolving into a broader and more calamitous meltdown. After the almost 40-minute meeting and his six-minute statement, the president left the White House for a nearly two-hour mountain bike ride in the nearby Virginia woods.

Bush also addressed the crisis in his weekly radio address, as did Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden in delivering his party's response.

Biden criticized Republican nominee John McCain's proposal to solve the problem in part by having the government buy bad home-loan mortgages at full face value and renegotiate them at a reduced price.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama focused on words of calm.

"I know these are difficult times. I know folks are worried," he was to say at a rally in Philadelphia, according to prepared remarks released by his campaign. "But I also know that now is not the time for fear or panic. Now is the time for resolve and steady leadership. Because I know we can steer ourselves out of this crisis." -source

Gabby Concepcion sparks ’Gabbymania!’ at ABS-CBN; will do teleserye, films for Star Cinema

By RAMIL DIGAL GULLE
abs-cbnNEWS.com

Are we seeing just the beginning of Gabbymania?  Less than 24 hours since actor Gabby Concepcion set foot in the
Philippines on Sunday--for the first time in 13 years --he already sent fans and production staff a-screaming when he came to ABS-CBN.

He sparked a mini-stampede at the studio where The Buzz was airing live, and even the usually grimly serious staff at the ABS-CBN central news desk--women and men--were reduced to a frenzy of giggles and digicam-and-cellphone cam-flashing when he dropped by the news room.

Concepcion confirmed in his interview over The Buzz on Sunday that he already spoke to Malou Santos, managing director of Star Cinema (the film production outfit of ABS-CBN) and he was already offered two film projects.

He added that ABS-CBN has also offered him a teleserye.

It is undeniable proof of
Concepcion’s star power--his thirteen years away from show business notwithstanding. Thirteen years away from show business seem to have done very little to diminish Concepcion’s romantic leading man looks.

In fact, The Buzz host Boy Abunda’s first question to the actor at the interview was, "Bakit ang guwapo mo (Why are you so good-looking)?"
Concepcion had to pause for a beat and mumbled something about genetics.

Indeed, the actor is several pounds heavier and age is already evident on the face that was first discovered some two decades ago as a model for a toothpaste commercial.

But his winning smile and finely-chiseled features remain. Whatever roughness that maturity and hardships have etched on his once boyishly handsome features only seems to have heightened his appeal.

Comeback
Concepcion left the country in 1995, several months after the 1994 Manila Film Festival scandal where he returned his Best Actor trophy after it was found out that the real winner of the award was, in fact, Edu Manzano.

Concepcion was the one who blew the whistle on his then manager Lolit Solis, whom he tagged as the mastermind behind an attempt to fraudulently proclaim him and then young actress Ruffa Gutierrez as the winners in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories.

"Nung umalis ako nung ’95, nilagay ko na yon sa likod ko (When I left in ’95 I left everything behind me. Yon, sabi ko I think I need to move on. Not everyone has the chance to succeed in show business. I felt I had my time)," he told Abunda.

In the
United States, Concepcion used whatever savings he had from his very successful Philippine showbiz career to study at Lincoln University. He finished two degrees simultaneously then went into the real-estate business. He eventually became one of the top ten real estate brokers in the US state of California.

He said that for the longest time, he was dead set on never returning to the
Philippines.

"Ayaw ko na
sana bumalik. Maraming nangyari. Nasaktan ako. Hindi ko na rin naisip na babalik akong Pilipinas," he told Abunda.

(I never wanted to come back. Too much had happened. I was very hurt. I never thought of coming back to the Philippines)

Concepcion said that he felt compelled to return for the sake of his father Rolly, who is suffering from a heart condition. It has become serious enough for his father to become wheelchair-bound.

"Dumami ang dahilan kung bakit kailangan kong umuwi. Dahil sa ama ko. Maysakit na siya sa puso. Hindi ko pwedeng sabihin sa sarili ko na well ganyan ang buhay. Idadasal ko na lang. Pag may nangyari sa kanya hindi ko mapapatawad ang sarili ko," he said.

(The compelling reasons for me to come back piled up. My dad has heart disease. I can’t just tell myself that that’s life and then pray about it. If anything happens to him I won’t be able to forgive myself.)

Concepcion also clarified an issue of his supposed welching on a contract with GMA Films for a movie with Jolina Magdangal. The actor said that he is still committed to the project, except that there’s "slight conflict" that has to be resolved.

The actor also admitted that part of the "slight conflict" is the emphasis that the movie would place on him. He explained that since any film he would do with GMA would be his comeback movie, he would want such a film to have greater focus on him.

"Maraming dahilan eh. Kung ito nga ay magiging comeback. it has to be a comeback kasi kung hindi ko magiging comeback, bakit ko gagawin?" he said.

(There are several reasons. If this would be a comeback for me, it has to really be a comeback. Because if it isn’t, why would I bother doing it?)

The actor then said that he already spoke with the GMA Films executives and clarified that he is still honoring his contract for the movie with Magdangal.

Movie with KC and
Sharon?
Concepcion also expressed great interest in someday making a movie with his ex-wife Sharon Cuneta, his daughter KC or a movie with all three of them together.

"
Sharon has been part of my life. Of course I’d like to do a movie with her. I’d love to do a movie with KC.  She’s my daughter after all. Sharon is the mother of my daughter; it would be nice if we could do something together.

"Maraming intrigang papasok dyan. Katulad nga ng sabi ni
Sharon paglalaruan lang. Pero kung maiiwasan natin yan why not, you know?  Gumawa tayo, ipakita natin sa tao, tutal yon ang gusto nila," he said.

(I know there would be a lot of intrigues. Like what
Sharon said, some people could just make a circus out of the whole thing. But if we could find a way to prevent that from happening, why not? Let’s make the movie because that’s what people would love to see.)

Concepcion also said that he’s very happy about his coming projects with ABS-CBN although there aren’t any specifics as of yet. "I’m very excited about the projects kasi, I know kung paano gumawa ang Channel 2 (I know how good Channel 2 is at that sort of thing)."

Peace with Lolit
He also revealed that he is now on good terms with his former manager Lolit Solis. He said that he and Solis patched things up in
Las Vegas, when they both went there to watch Manny Pacquiao’s last fight.

"Wala na kaming tampuhan ni Lolit. In fact, nagkita kami sa
Las Vegas. Nagulat nga ako na lumapit sya sa akin. Nag-usap kami na-settle namin yon on the spot.  Sabi niya, "O sige bati na tayo. Pahingi ng 100 dollars.’  Buti meron akong 100 dollars. Kung hindi baka hindi pa kami nag-bati," he said, laughing.

(There’s no more bad blood between me and Lolit. If fact, we met in
Las Vegas. I was surprised that she approached me. We talked and settled everything on the spot. She said, "We’re okay now. Now give me a hundred dollars. Good thing I had a hundred dollars on me or else we wouldn’t have patched things up.)

Abunda then asked if
Concepcion is aware whether his ex-wife still has any gripes or grudge against him.

"Meron nga ba? Well, siguro sa mga naririnig natin
noon may galit siya sa akin. But that’s all in the past. Kung ano man ang kasalanang nagawa ko sa kanya o kahit kanino, nandito ako para humingi ng pagpapatawad. So let’s put all the issues behind us now. I’m not here para mang-intriga. Nandirito ako to start a new life," he replied.

(Does she really? Well, before I used to hear from others that she’s angry at me. But that’s all in the past. Whatever mistakes I made, whomever I offended before whether it’s Sharon or someone else, I’m here to ask for forgiveness. I want to start a new life.)

Humbling lesson
The actor told Abunda that his experience of going from a showbiz superstar to hitting rock-bottom in the
United States was a very humbling one.

"On my part, the
United States is very humbling. Dun ako natutong wala kang alalay. Wala kang kasama ikaw gagawa lahat.

(It was in
United States that I learned to live life without any assistants. Over there you have to do everything yourself. No one will help you except yourself. I experienced what it’s like to fall on your face and then get up again using your own hard work. You’ll learn that only when you go through it and feel it when you find yourself in that same place.)

He also thanked all the Filipinos in the
United States who helped him out when he was starting to build his own life, away from the glamour, fame and comforts of a showbiz career.

"Mahaba ang 13 years. Unang-una gusto kong magpasalamat sa kapwa Pilipino natin na nasa Amerika na nagtiwala sa akin nung ako’y pumasok sa real estate. Sila rin ang tumatawag at sila rin ang napagbebentahan ko. At pinagkatiwalaan nila ako. Sino ba itong artista na ito na may nalalalaman sa real estate?  Pinagkatiwalaan nila ako," he said.

(Thirteen years is a long time. I give my thanks first to all our fellow Filipinos in
America who trusted me when I went into real estate. They were the ones who called on me and they were the ones I sold property to. And they trusted me. I mean, it was good of them to give a chance to an actor who claimed to know about real estate. They trusted me.)

How to maintain your self improvement course

Once you have decided on a self improvement course, you will face moments along your journey where it seems that you are not making progress toward your goal. It is but natural.

Staying in the course when the results do not seem to be coming can be challenging. But then, you must not give up when you are pursuing a dream.

Stay on your self improvement course. Do not jump overboard. If you believe in your dream and is willing to see it through, you will surely enjoy the sweet reward of success when you arrive at your destination.

Below are four tips for staying the self improvement course.

1. Stay positive.

Your mental attitude toward your situation is very important. If you think possibilities, you will be better able to focus on the opportunities that are present in setbacks or delays.

Try to become your own dictator when you surrender your will to negative thoughts. Keep a positive attitude. You know that you have what it takes to succeed.

Tell yourself to think thoughts that will lift your spirit and renew that desire to succeed.

2. Pull versus Push.

It is not possible to push a rope. Neither can you make any progress by pushing and forcing it to move to your liking.

Experts will tell you that you need to make yourself "attractive" so that you can effortlessly draw to yourself what you want in life. This will also move you away from seducing or pushing in order to produce the outcome that you desire.

What have you been attracting to your life? Are you the one doing the pushing or the pulling?

3. Be persistent.

Continue on taking action daily toward your dreams and goals. Patience and persistence are the crowning qualities of self-confident champions.

Think of the gardener who plants a seed and then waits for it to sprout and grow. He waters and nourishes the seed even when he does not see immediate results, having faith that the seed will develop into a beautiful plant.

Like the gardener, do not think of what you see and what is going on today. Look ahead in the future and what your actions now will result to.

What can you do today to achieve your future plans?

4. Have a success partner.

Having a success partner to encourage and support you especially when you are down or frustrated can make the difference in achieving a goal.

Sometimes our vision is blurred by distraction or discouragement. Having a supportive partner who wants big things for you and believes in you can help you stay the self improvement course.

You can do it on your own, but you do not have to do it alone. You have a choice.

Why not have a success partner who will stick with you not only through the good times but also through the bad times?

Elbert Hubbard  "Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will see you that much nearer to your goal."

Nobody told you that the self improvement course you have chosen to trek is easy. But with enough willpower and the perseverance to go on, you will finally reach that long awaited destination which is success.

There are a variety of self improvement articles available nowadays. You may be thinking that this is one of those, obviously.

What have you got to lose by reading one more self improvement article?

When you came the 40-year stage in your life, you will suddenly realize many things. You get to ask yourself questions. How will it be when I get to the end of my life? How do I feel about the life I lived?

Then someone gave you some self improvement articles while telling you that it is not yet too late. Does that mean anything to you?

You bet it does. The feeling of anxiety that will come next is just normal. Then you will feel confused because life had felt so good. You were happy, had a successful marriage, two wonderful kids, and a job you reasonably enjoyed. What was my problem?

It was your class ceiling. The "practical" and fear-based side that had convinced you all along that your passion and dreams had died.

Here are top ten shifts in perspective that can help you move your life to the next level. This self improvement article will assist you in breaking through your own glass ceiling to create the life you really want.

1. Give yourself permission to dream. You probably had no problem dreaming as a kid. What happened to your ability to imagine and dream about what you want and who you want to be? When was the last time you caught yourself daydreaming and appreciated it?

2. Stop looking outside yourself for happiness. Look inside. Increase your self-awareness. Get curious about who you are at the core. Cultivate and nurture a relationship with yourself.

3. Cover the basics. Take the time to address your personal needs. How can you focus on thriving in your life if you are in survival mode? Set up that meeting with a financial advisor, get your space organized, clean up the details that are wasting your energy.

4. Embrace your past and move on. Shift from "why it happened" to what I want to do about it now. Asking "why" is not a very empowering question. Asking what or how I want to proceed can be much more powerful and produce forward movement.

5. Remember that you are not alone. It is easy to feel overwhelmed with life. Seek support. Read more self improvement articles. They might help you figure about some things that are puzzling you.

6. Remember gratitude. Count your blessings. What is working right in you life? Make a list. Set aside a bit of time everyday to acknowledge what or who you are grateful for. The more you practice gratitude, the more you attract into your life things to be grateful for.

7. Court your passion. You still have your passions though it has been a while since you may have felt it flow. When are you the most alive and joyful in your life? Who do you most admire and what do they inspire in you?

8. Take action and take a risk. All the inspiration in the world is not enough to make you move your life to the next level. It takes inspired action to do that.

9. Keep breathing. You probably forget to take deep full breaths. We have all learned to constrict our breathing in response to stress. According to many self improvement articles, we not only need oxygen to stay alive, we need oxygen to give us energy and keep us healthy. Right now take 5 deep, full breaths.

10. Have fun. Call a friend, take a bubble bath, take yourself to an art museum or schedule a whole day out in nature. Put on some great music and dance till you drop.

And you thought this was just one of those self improvement articles.

MANILA, Philippines - On the eve of their highly touted interfaith rally on Friday, religious, political and militant groups made last-minute reminders as they finalized preparations for the event.

In separate statements released Thursday night, the groups made clear their call for truth and accountability from the Arroyo administration, especially in the wake of the $329.48-million ZTE broadband network deal mess.

Meanwhile, opposition leader and Makati Mayor Jejomar C. Binay said around 50,000 will participate in the interfaith rally.

Green symbolizing "hope" will be the color of the day for opposition groups who will join militant and religious organizations gather in Makati City for the rally.

"Magsuot tayo ng berde bukas. Green is the color of hope and naniniwala kaming may pag-asa ang bayan (We should wear green tomorrow.

Green is the color of hope and we believe there is hope for the nation)," United Opposition spokesman Adel Tamano said in an interview on dzBB radio Thursday evening.

Former President Joseph Estrada is expected to attend the rally.

Students from Catholic schools will join the inter-faith rally, with the Manila Archdiocesan and Parochial Schools Association (MAPSA) pledging active support.

MAPSA president Msgr. Gerardo Santos said his group belongs to the "Watch and Pray Movement" composed of Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines–NCR, parochial schools and catechists, Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines, Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting.

"We opted to join them not because we favor GMA's resignation but because we want to be in solidarity with the citizenry who value Truth that's why our slogan is 'Truth, Accountability and Integrity' which we want to highlight," he said.

"We should be together in this pilgrimage for truth and rid the country of corruption which has severely affected the citizens," he added.

He said college students have been invited to the inter-faith rally on "voluntary basis."

"We also invited school teachers and personnel and I want them to be there conscious of their role in society," he added.

Their assembly would begin at Don Bosco Makati where an orientation will be held "because we want to be clear on our stand and establish a common ground."

Other Christian denominations voiced solidarity with the inter-faith rally, in separate statements posted on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Web site (www.cbcpnews.com) Thursday night.

Bishop Solito Toquero of the United Methodist Church, Manila Episcopal Area said graft and corruption have cost the Arroyo administration its credibility to govern.

"The loss of respect for authority in almost all sectors of our society in politics, business or religion is very much prevalent these days not only in the Philippines but also in many other nations," Toquero said in a statement.

"What has happened to our leaders and to the "only Christian country in Asia? Why can we not eliminate graft and corruption in government?

Whatever regime is in power, the octopus of graft and corruption, strangling and gripping tightly our people, agencies and institutions continue to choke us; our leaders seem powerless to extricate us from this stranglehold. Are we not a Christian country? Is this not an oxymoron, a corrupt 'Christian' country, allegedly the most corrupt in Asia?" he asked.

For his part, Iglesia Filipina Independiente bishop Godofredo David said the present crisis caused by greed for wealth and power should be stopped.

He said the Filipino people deserve a president and a government that would genuinely promote their welfare and well-being and uphold their interests as citizens of the country."

David also urged his church members in particular and people in general that all should need to make efforts to search for the truth and fight falsehood and deception.

"Let us find inspiration in the courage of those who speak the truth and with them continue to thread the path towards the establishment of just society under a government that genuinely serves the interest of the Filipino people, he said.

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) also welcomed the CBCP's stand against corruption.

"We call on the Filipino people to have the courage to be set free from the sins injustice, oppression, suppression and violence. Let us claim our right for the truth. Let us support and join in collective action for truth to come out and let justice roll down wherever it may," UCCP general secretary bishop Eliezer Pascua said.

UCCP also questioned Arroyo's integrity as her administration has failed to curb corruption in the country.

A pastor of the National Methodist Churches in the Philippines said that the evil of corruption has to be exorcised and ended.

Militants, on the other hand, will push for the ouster of Arroyo during the event.

Umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said it and its affiliate organizations will assemble at 2 p.m. at Rustan's along Ayala Avenue where it will hold a short program.

They will then march towards the Ninoy Aquino Monument to join the other groups and forces for the 5 p.m. interfaith prayer assembly.

Bayan prepared a 20-foot long effigy depicting Arroyo as a "devil snake" holding a gun and bundles of money to symbolize how the regime has been using state power and public resources to conceal the truth and suppress the people.

Bayan chairwoman Carol Araullo said the movement calling for Arroyo's resignation or ouster keeps growing, expanding, and strengthening as the political crisis drags on.

"Even the latest pastoral letter issued by the CBCP cannot provide respite to Arroyo because the crisis has now become very intense. The only acceptable resolution right now is to change the regime and institute meaningful reforms to address corruption and the other evils of the current government," she said.

"Arroyo has been able to maneuver and escape prosecution in the past through her blatant use of state power and public resources to buy political support, silence witnesses, and undermine government processes and institutions that could check her abuses. But there comes a point when people will say enough is enough. Now is that time," she added. - GMANews.TV
