For 26 years, Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton.. shepherded kids through the exciting world of books. The show, which fostered a love of reading, was the third longest-..running program in PBS history, outlasted only by Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. (R.I.P.) Reading Rainbow

Even if you can't remember a specific Reading Rainbow episode, chances are, the theme song is still lodged somewhere in your head:
Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high,
Take a look, it's in a book — Reading Rainbow ...

Even after his death, anything related to Michael Jackson
seems to be worth money.
And companies are willing to sue if you threaten to take their Jackson business away.
R.H. Smith & Sons is one of the largest wig manufacturing companies around for over a century. But recently another company, Rubie's Costume Company, has been trying to take some of their business.
Rubie's has been emailing potential buyers claiming they have exclusive worldwide rights to market and sell all Jackson wigs, costumes and accessories.
However, according to a lawsuit filed in New York's federal court by R.H. Smith, that's just not true.
In fact, Smith & Sons claims that under their license from MJ Licensing LLC, they are allowed to market the wigs and anything related to Jackson. They also state that Rubie's false claims to exclusivity has done them damage.
So in turn, they want to prohibit Rubie's from the claims and also want them to get in touch with everyone they've been in contact with recently and let them know they aren't the exlcusive sellers. Smith & Sons is also claiming for damages. Big surprise.
But who knew there was even such a high demand for Jackson wigs? Does this mean a large number of Jackson look-a-likes will be out and about this Halloween?

broaddaylight : The Ethereal Connection

by Robbin Clifford

photo by Heidi Clifford (prospector photographer)

One night while at work, I was listening to Big Sonic Heaven on L.A.'s Indie 103.1 F.M. and a song caught my ear. I waited with anticipation to find out what it was.

'That was 'Time in My Mouth' by the band broaddaylight, mastered by Robin Guthrie from the Cocteau Twins,' announced host Darren Revell.

Robin Guthrie? Now that is what you call a stamp of approval.

I immediately found my cell phone and called my editor blurting out a rather quick, 'Hello! broaddaylight, I want them! I just heard them on Indie, and their EP was mastered by the one, the only Robin Guthrie. Please, please, please!'

[Editor's note: This is, in fact, an accurate account of the conversation.]

A few nights later I called my editor again.  As it so happened, she had randomly met broaddaylight at a club the night before, told them about my request and secured the feature.

Who knew name-dropping could really help get the story? Then again, this is L.A.  Let's just call it the Ethereal Connection.

I met up with broaddaylight at the Viper Room on the Sunset Strip. After much gushing over the set, we grabbed a booth at the bar and saluted a brilliant evening of music. The L.A.-based band consists of Sarah Eakins (singer), husband James Allen Eakins (guitars, electronics) and Henry Bennet (guitar) and formed in 2004, while the trio lived in an eclectic apartment complex filled with musicians.

'When we got together and started playing, it felt really natural and spontaneous but at the same time, we have some kind of focus on what we do,' says Bennet. 'We have some sort of process, but it's rather organic.'

After talking about music with the band, it seems that broaddaylight is continuing the marriage of sound begun by the likes of the Cocteau Twins, using elements of post-punk, new wave, new romantic and goth that lend to an artsy and atmospheric product.

In 2002, on Sarah and James' wedding anniversary, the couple attended a performance from Violet Indiana (featuring Robin Guthrie and Siobhan de Maré, the former lead singer of Mono). It was at this show that James and Guthrie first met. Three years later, after the Cocteau Twins pulled out of a spot at Coachella and Guthrie opted to perform at the monthly L.A. party Violaine, the two met again.  This time, they exchanged emails.

'We just finished recording, so we began looking at ways to work with Robin, so we decided to do a really big show and produce it,' James explains. 'We asked Robin to do it, so he flew out from France to L.A. It was a big success and we became even better friends with him. When it came time to master The Bell Jar EP, he was kind enough to master [the tracks].'

The band was impressed with the final product. 'He gave us this wonderful lush shimmering effect to it that was unbelievable,' says Sarah. 'When you record something, you hear it so many times [that] you kind of lose sight of what it actually sounds like and, when it came back, he restored all of the magic and all of the wonder of the music as a whole and it was very much, 'Yes! This is what it's supposed to sound like!''

After the release of The Bell Jar, which features artwork by Sarah based on Edgar Degas' first color photographs, broaddaylight was friend-requested on MySpace by Big Sonic Heaven and James responded with a link to download the EP. Since the band didn't live far from the radio station's studio, James also delivered two copies of the EP to Darren Revell.

'He took a listen to us and put us in the must listen to again category and, when he listened to us the second time, he said he understood us and loved the sound,' James recalls. 'We have been played on Indie 103.1 since February. The first track they started playing was 'Closed' and then 'Time in My Mouth' and they started playing 'Hello and Goodbye.' Now, all of a sudden, we are playing at the Viper Room for Indie 103.1 for Check One…Two.'

The band's gratitude towards both Guthrie and Revell is readily apparent. 'For Robin to work with us and Darren to play us when we are not signed to a label is indescribable,' says James. As for upcoming projects, the band is currently writing material for its next release. Whether this will be in the form of another EP or a full-length is up in the air, but James has one idea in mind. 'We really love Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine. We're hoping Mr. Shields will be involved in our next recording.' Let's hope so.
