'I CANNOT tell a lie." The famous quote from America's first president, George Washington, is about to be called into question, according to leaked information on the plot of Dan Brown's new book.
The Lost Symbol looks set to create a huge uproar across the USA, with its allegations that far from being the country's 'founding father,' Washington was actually a traitor who had been secretly negotiating with the British during the American War of Independence.
His treachery – revealed in a deathbed confession – was apparently concealed by his fellow Freemasons.
Worse still, assertions that the original confession was concealed in George Washington's coffin is creating panic around the grounds of Mount Vernon where Washington is buried.
Historian Robert Cooper, curator of the Grand Lodge of Scotland and a world authority on Freemasonry says, "It seems they're planning security precautions to safeguard against what has become known as the 'Rosslyn effect,'" referring to the way that, after the publication of Brown's bestseller The Da Vinci Code, Rosslyn Chapel in Midlothian was deluged by grail seekers and treasure hunters.
According to The Da Vinci Code, descendants of a union between Christ and Mary Magdalene still lived near Rosslyn Chapel, safeguarding secrets hidden there about the true origins of the Christian church. Not surprisingly, the furore – particularly in Catholic quarters – was off the scale. This time, it seems Freemasons are being hauled over the coals. But Cooper doesn't seem overly concerned.
"Brown's novels are renowned for introducing sensational claims. These involve 'facts' suggesting that something which generations of people have taken for granted, is actually untrue. He weaves some real facts among the highly controversial stuff and has a good guys and bad guys race against the clock to decipher the clues. At the end of the day, it's simply a piece of formulaic fiction."
Maybe so, but with six weeks to go and millions of copies of The Lost Symbol already printed in anticipation of another blockbuster, Freemasons in the US have been accusing Doubleday, Brown's publishers, of cranking up the controversy and deliberately leaking details of the plot. Masons are worried enough to be setting up a website recruiting teams of "experts" to carry out a page by page analysis as soon as the book hits the shelves.
Cooper, who has recently returned from lecturing on Freemasonry in the USA, appears to have undertaken a pretty comprehensive analysis already, and if he knows where the plot leaks are coming from, he's not saying. "Of course I could be the victim of a double bluff but I don't believe so. My knowledge of the source convinces me of its reliability, and of course there is some conjecture on my own part, based on the comprehensive knowledge I have of the background to the story."
He claims his recent book Cracking the Freemason's Code – The Truth about Solomon's Key caused Dan Brown to change the title of his new novel from The Solomon Key to The Lost Symbol. "I don't know what other changes my book caused, but as a Masonic historian, I deal in facts, not fiction."
One fact about George Washington shows he became a Freemason in 1752, aged 20. Almost without exception the other founding fathers of the United States – including Benjamin Franklin and James Madison – were Freemasons, and the American constitution itself is said to be based on Masonic principles.
According to Cooper, Scottish Masons took the principles of Freemasonry over to America in the first place. "Scotland is different from the rest of the world in that we go back before Freemasonry as an 18th century organisation. We were ordinary working guys – craft guilds – with our own ancient knowledge and rituals. It was the original egalitarian society, and that's what we took to America."
He says the first known Freemasons in North America were Scotsmen from Aberdeen and Melrose. "That was in 1648, a hundred years before George Washington. A hundred years after George Washington, during a Masonic ceremony, a Scotsman laid the foundation stone for the Statue of Liberty. Not a bad bit of continuity…"
Scottish Masons took the spark of revolution across the Atlantic, too. The Lodge of St Andrew met in the Green Dragon Tavern in Boston, and on St Andrew's night 30th November, 1773. it was recorded that the Lodge meeting was adjourned as 'consignees of tea took up the Brethrens' time.' The men dressed as Mohawks who tipped the British tea into Boston harbour (the act that started the revolution) were Lodge members. One of the brothers was the famous revolutionary Paul Revere. After the revolution the new nation used skilled stonemasons from Scotland (personally recruited by Washington) to work on the prestigious buildings around Washington DC. These included the capitol building and the White House (where the Scottish masons wouldn't use slaves because they were not free men.)
All very stirring stuff, and not surprisingly, the present-day Freemasonic fraternity in Washington is incensed at the thought of a spanner being thrown into the works by Dan Brown. But could there be any basis behind the story?
The facts about the American Revolution show that in the early days, in the mid 1770's, the colonialists suffered a series of defeats. Strategic secrets were being passed to the British. The facts also show that an American army general, Benedict Arnold, was a traitor who plotted to surrender the fort at West Point to the British and turn the tide of war against his own side. The facts link Washington with Arnold when it comes to Freemasonry and the facts show that the day the plot was discovered, Washington was due to meet Arnold at West Point. "The hard facts stop there." says Cooper
It seems that in The Lost Symbol Washington has been working with Arnold and passing secrets to the British. But why on earth would Washington want to subvert the cause of American freedom?
"Ah, that I'm not clear about," admits Cooper. "I don't know what Brown has up his sleeve there, but I've been led to believe he's suggesting George Washington could be bought like anyone else, and the English Tories had made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
When Arnold was rumbled, Washington did a huge about-turn, covered his tracks and wholeheartedly embraced the cause of American independence."
The rest, as they say, is history – except that in the novel, it appears Washington has a crisis of conscience on his deathbed and writes a detailed confession to be published after his death. His personal physician and friend, Dr James Craik – also a Freemason – is known to have attended the dying president, whose sealed coffin is buried at Mount Vernon. In true Dan Brown tradition, details of the confession and the events surrounding it have been hidden somewhere, and veiled references to it are found a couple of centuries later by a researcher working at Mount Vernon.
He seems to think something highly secret and important has been buried in Washington's coffin. This secret – and the details surrounding it – have been concealed within Freemasonic codes of reference and the researcher can't make sense of the symbolism disguising what he knows is a significant find.
He contacts symbologist Robert Langdon but is murdered before he can explain his findings.
Langdon, the CIA and the FBI are now in a race to find the confession, which the secret services must destroy to safeguard the integrity of the country's founding father and the creation of the world's first democracy.
Langdon is the front runner since he's been contacted by a high ranking Freemason with knowledge of the symbolism of the Order. Apparently there's a surprise twist when it comes to the identity of this Freemason – a twist which has more orthodox members of the craft siding with the CIA and FBI in suppressing the truth.
"If this plotline is anywhere near accurate," says Cooper, who insists again that he has no reason to doubt his source, "then it's going to create a huge uproar across the USA."

Dan Brown has located his hero, Robert Langdon, right in the heart of Washington, which could reveal some interesting details for history buffs. "For the first time, Langdon will find himself embroiled in a mystery on US soil. This new novel explores the hidden history of our nation's capital," Brown has written in a posting on his official website.
George Washington is said to have demanded the city be laid out in a symbolic square, and for those of esoteric bent, it seems the shape of a square and compass can be formed by drawing a line on a map between two of the city's major landmarks, the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial, and following through along the walls of the White House and the Jefferson Memorial.
The square and compasses is one of the best-known Masonic symbols, where the measurements of a square showed that something previously imperfect had been perfected.
Masons apply the square metaphorically to themselves and their brethren.
Inside the Capitol, which sits at the dead centre of the square, lies the cornerstone laid by George Washington. In a Masonic ritual of 1793, a visual representation of the ceremony shows him dressed in his Masonic apron.

Search Encyclopaedia Britannica for the word Freemasons and an unusual though not entirely unexpected result pops up: the entry for scapegoats. The secretive organization that once counted George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Voltaire among its ranks has been a favorite target for conspiracy theorists since the 17th century, when Masonic lodges first spread across Europe. Now best-selling novelist Dan Brown has taken aim at the group's cultlike reputation in his latest book, The Lost Symbol — a fact that comes as no surprise to author Jay Kinney. In his own new book, The Masonic Myth, Kinney attempts to dispel some of the persistent rumors about the group by explaining how he became a Freemason himself.
TIME: You joined the Freemasons in 2001. What made you want to get involved?
Kinney: I had been interested since the '70s, when I saw a few books about Masonry and had a lot of confusion about it. Around 2000, I said, Why not try it myself?
Masons aren't allowed to recruit people. Why is that?
They don't want you to bring in people against their will. They need to join for their own voluntary reasons.
So what are the basic requirements? Who can join?
You are given an application form to fill out, that's the first thing. You have to be male. The questions include "Do you believe in a supreme being?" It doesn't specify one particular religion, but because of the way the rituals have evolved, it's assumed a Mason is going to have a non-specific belief in a God or deity. It also asks if you've ever been convicted of a serious crime. That is a deal breaker. The main other thing is they want confirmation that you're self-..supporting, that you're not joining the Masons to mooch off the lodge.
What was your initiation like?
When I showed up, I was put in a little preparation room beforehand that had some clothing that I was supposed to put on, and then they gave me a blindfold. The "obligation," or oath, is done at the altar in the middle of the lodge room. It's basically just a waist-high piece of furniture that has a Bible or whatever sacred text the individual has for their particular religion. Then you're walked around the lodge room, introduced to each of the main officers. You see the assembled brethren and the master of the lodge before you in his top hat. It's very traditional, early-1800s garb. And after the ritual — and this is true of all the Masonic degrees — the master recites a lecture on the group's history and symbols, memorized word for word. Those haven't changed in 200 years.

Of course, Brown began dropping clues when he hid the "widow's son" phrase on the dust jacket of "The Da Vinci Code" to allude to his next novel: Masons. There he also disguised an allusion to the enigmatic sculpture Kryptos at CIA headquarters: Washington. There's nothing the author likes better than a secretive society to help weave plots dense with coded knowledge that could change the course of history.
So Brown could have predicted this moment. He must have imagined we'd be taking crash courses on Masonry, poised to scour the nation's capital for symbols and deeper meaning, following the footsteps of Robert Langdon -- the author's tweedy Harvard symbologist hero, who's back in the new novel.
Does the layout of Washington reveal some hidden Masonic influence? Are those secret signs hidden in the construction of key buildings? And what about those scary symbols on the nation's currency?
Let's find out. Touring Brown-inspired Washington Masonry before the novel even comes out may sound crazy, but others have tried.

This has different meaning to the lowly initiates at the bottom of the proverbial pyramid, who merely serve as useful idiots, compared to what the adepts at the top of the pyramid believe. These adepts believe that the creator of the universe left the world -- including mankind itself -- in an imperfect state. The deviants at the top of the ladder, who run the stage show of consensus reality through their various levels of command and control, see themselves quite literally as Gods who, having reached perfection themselves, have the ability and natural right to shape and reshape the world according to their plan known as the "Great Work." They see themselves as re-creators, above and at odds with the true creator of the universe
The secular humanists and high priests of science have largely taken over from the control mechanism of organized religion, instilling a belief in people's minds that the material world is the extent of all truth, and that all truth is to be found through the understanding of science. As with organized religion, Freemasonry and other such organizations, what the "profane masses" at the bottom are given to believe is far different from that which the controllers at the top know and use against us lowly, "..lesser-..evolved" types, who are seen as nothing more than cannon fodder for the rebuilding of Solomon's (Sol-Om-On) Temple, which itself is exoteric allegory for the Great Work; the "perfection" of mankind and everything else under the sun
Science fiction writer and futurist, Arthur C. Clarke, stated in his "laws" of prediction that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishab..le from magic," and it's this "magic," which is the science behind the advanced technology unknown to the general public, that is being developed and perfected, not to free humanity but enslave and ultimately destroy it
People in the Western nations are constantly being beat over the head with well-funded propaganda designed to instill in their minds hope of a cure for cancer and AIDS. Well-meaning but painfully naive people driven by fear and emotion will then donate their hard-earned money to what they think is a noble cause, not knowing that these donations are going to the very same government-..linked institutions that gave us AIDS and are working to create -- not cure -- even faster-acting cancer viruses and plagues; the former being unleashed from the tip of a needle, with the latter waiting in some government laboratory to be released at a time seen fit by the psychopathic controllers on an oblivious public (no doubt to be blamed on some Middle Eastern patsies)
NASA spends billions of dollars on a PR campaign aimed at enthralling us with the wonders of space travel and future missions to Mars, but how many people know about the satellite technology that can spot a penny on the ground and even see through people's walls? What about the technology that evolved out of the Star Wars program, which has more than likely since been further developed and weaponized to control the weather, control people's minds, torture and harass people, strike targets on the ground, and even create nuclear-like explosions anywhere on the earth using directed-..energy and other satellite-..based electromagnetic.. weaponry?
The big agribusinesses like Monsanto, Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) have for years been leading the push in the peddling of genetically-..modified crops under the banner of feeding the third world population, "ending starvation" as their New World Order minions work to exterminate these same people with World Health Organization vaccination campaigns sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. But we already know this is a big lie because the evidence is overwhelming that these GM crops don't help, but sicken those who consume them and the foods made from them. It is estimated that over 70% of the processed garbage that passes as "food" found at the grocery stores is made from genetically-..modified ingredients. Meanwhile, hardly a week passes where we don't hear something in the establishment media about the obesity epidemic and rising rates of childhood diabetes. Of course no connection is made to the organ-..damaging, blood-altering GM waste that's in the junk they're eating
So above is just a few examples of how the "new" religion of the masses -- the religion of humanism and science -- which is yet another exoteric version of the ancient religion of the Kabbalistic/..Freemasonic controllers, is leading us into the darkness instead of into the light, as they would have us believe. We are lead to believe that humans today are on the cutting edge of technological discovery, and this technology is being developed to only help benefit the average person that is in fact a target for extermination by the same cryptocracy behind the development of this same technology that it also controls, administers and directs to meet its own agenda. Through flattery and reliance on the ignorance of a deliberately dumbed-down public oblivious to real history, the controllers, via their media, lead the people to believe that they're the most advanced people to ever walk the earth. By placing science above creation, this cements the flawed idea that man himself can become God through the understanding of science, and thus is the key to salvation in the material world, which we are supposed to believe is the extent of all existence. However, this salvation will not be for the many but rather the select few at the very top, who seek immortality in the material world through the mastering of science and the understanding of nature
The controllers' "perfection" of the world is nearing completion. They already have control over the planet's weather and crops with HAARP, scalar technology and GMO seeds. The metaphorical capstone will be added to the pyramid once humanity has been "pefected" with the emergence of the "New Man," which was frequently mentioned by the communists as being the peak of human evolution.
