April 2003 ... I drove to Austin with Stephen and Ben to meet Barrett for my first live Sigur Ros experience.  They were playing at Austin Music Hall ... not a big or fancy place ... fits a couple hundred tops.  Barrett had been waiting in line for a couple hours to get in.  A couple of hours ... no previous months of searching for tickets.  We got in ... found a spot towards the front ... and waited.  I went to pee at one point, Barrett tagging along, and he pointed out the lead singer/guitar Jonsi, walking in front of us.  No one even batted an eye at him.  Just some skinny kid at a show.  Don't remember a damn thing about the opening act ... it was pretty boring.  I had heard some Sigur Ros songs before this show ... and I liked them a lot ... but I had no idea.

It's hard to describe the feelings you get at a Sigur Ros show.  It's amazing to me how hundreds of us could sit there and be completely captivated by these four little Icelandic guys who don't speak much English ... none at all during the music.  They're not speaking Icelandic either, though.  No one really knows what's being said ... perhaps it is some form of Icelandic, but who in the hell speaks Icelandic besides those dudes and Bjork?  Mayhaps Erik the Red?  Who knows ...  What I do know is that the music those guys put forth allows you to see beyond any realm we've ever experienced.  I'm not sure it's possible to put it into words, they can't even do that .... but my friend Derek ("Weems") once said it was the closest thing to Zen we will probably ever experience.  Best description I've heard ... if you think in terms of Buddhism at all.  If not ... I say it speaks to your soul.  Sarah McLachlan may speak to your heart; Chopin might speak to your mind; but Sigur Ros allows your ears to communicate with your being ... soul, Self, whatever you want to call it.

Anyway, a few years later, most, if not all, of the band's shows are selling out quickly.  How this is possible is unbelievable to me ... it's just word of mouth.   I doubt very seriously Dave Matthews Band carried this many fans before they hit MTV.

Last week's show didn't create something new in me ... the first show did.  It was new ... it was amazing.  This year's was just ... peaceful, breath-taking, and beautiful.  I wish I had allowed myself to cry early in the set when they played Glosoli.  I didn't, however, and it never came again.  I was too damn focused on taking great pictures ... which came out fairly shitty anyway ... that's kharma for ya.  There are a couple shots in my pictures thing if you want to see ... both are Orri, the drummer.  God, he's awesome.  This guy behind me described him as "Animal" ... you know, the muppet.  Great description!  He's a maniac.  But in a mindblowingly beautiful way, of course.  Anyway ... I'm way too tired to go into more detail .. and I should have written this down before 6 days after the show ... because of course it's not as powerful now.  But anyway ... more later ....

"Strange World"

It's a very strange world that leaves me
Holding on to nothing when there's nothing left to lose
Your touch is cold and damp, the devil's in your eyes
I wonder why I always let you lead me on this way
'Cause you see only what you want to see
You feel only what you want to
And I am on the outside of your strange world

so last night, in my dream, i was in an early episode of friends.  i was telling the gang how i was actually watching the episode years after it was aired, and they didn't believe me.  so i told them all things they could expect in life.  i told jennifer about how she'd marry brad pitt, to which she said "excellent."  and then i said "but he'll cheat on you with angelina jolie."  her face went limp. jen had me read from some book. she was comparing how similar she and i were.  apparently we're both lefties, even though i don't think she is. she had me turn to a chapter about jews. the passage made no sense to me, so i put the book down and left.  then i was in a bandhall and aliens were attacking.  sancho was there, wearing a tux. he wouldn't walk home with me cuz his mom was on her way to make dinner.  then the aliens tried to kill jane fonda.  she was hurting them with a pink flower.  then i woke up.

jen started a riot, let's see if i can. so the pope is a special dude, right? god chose him, right? so how come they're voting on the new one? this poor new bastard has been sitting around for 50 years waiting to be able to be what god chose him for? shouldn't he be born with a sign that says "god chose me to be a pope someday?" you know, instead of some old dude's voting for him ... by the way, there must be some sort of campaigning going on over there, huh? "chose my guy, god sent him" "no, god sent my guy" ...wtf? similar subject with some differences - my mom and i just got into a big argument. she said "women shouldn't be priests" i said "why not?" she said "cuz jesus said so" i said "so?" she said "you know, you don't have to be so liberal all the time" i said "you don't have to be so ignorant all the time" bam, she got pissed. but yeah ... my god. this is what is wrong with the world. well, one of the many things. apparently we are just supposed to do things because someone says to ... i'm sorry, because some book written a really long ass time ago says that some dude said so. that's some stupid shit. i don't even want to think about this crap anymore ... you guys discuss

now ... usually i would immediately run to the authorities, as should you upon hearing this .... but tiegel is a good man. and i haven't explained yet how he killed this woman. it was with his penis. yes, that's right. he was givin it to her one night (or maybe mid morning) and he was so damn good that the poor woman's heart stopped. luckily, you see, tiegel was a fireman at one point in his odd little life, thus he was able to resuscitate her. note: this is a true story.
