I realize it's been a couple of days since the Muddy Waters Party up here at my juke joint, but I wanted to let all of you who attended, performed, worked, and volunteered that day that I haven't forgotten you. Our estimates are that over 200 of you came out Saturday to our little party. That's not counting musicians and staff. To Dixie Rose, Mark Klein, Gary Bello, Bryan Lee, Henry Gray, Selwyn Cooper, Reggie Seals, Big Red and the Soul Benders, Lil Dave Thompson and their respective bands; thank you for coming out and performing at less than what you normally charge. Your loyalty to me is much appreciated. To Lil' Ray Neal and Larry Garner; thank you for just showing up and hanging out with everyone. You didn't have to come up, but your loyalty to me and spreading the gospel of Teddy's Juke Joint when you're on the road means much more than what anyone here can imagine. To Big Daddy Blue & Lightnin' Boy; thank you for running the sound board for us outside again this year. And you know what, the bands sounded better outside this year than they have any year prior. To Selwyn Cooper and his drummer Pete, Lil Dave Thompson and his drummer, and Pete Latino; thank you for letting other musicians use your drums and amplifiers. It helped to keep our band transitions smooth and costs down. To Brigitte; thank you for stepping in and assisting my wife behind the bar. We were caught behind the 8-ball due to previous employees walking out on us at the last moment. Your assistance prevent a total meltdown as far as our bar activity would of been. To Big D (Dennis Schaibly) and WWOZ FM in New Orleans, Laura Larkin and WJBO AM in Baton Rouge, Rob Payer and WBRH FM in Baton Rouge, and Steve Caparotta and WAFB TV; thank you for promoting the Mud-In on your radio (and in Steve's case TV) program. We had numerous folks show up who said they heard about the Mud In from your programs. This was publicity that I couldn't afford normally and your personal touch enticed many of the folks that came out Saturday. To the Baton Rouge Blues Society and the Arts Council of Baton Rouge; thank you again for sponsoring the "Mud In" and providing the funding for the musicians who performed here for the third year in a row. This is getting to be like a tradition now, no? lol. To my brother Donald and sister Py; thanks for assisting with taking photos (and videos now), along with Donald for taking the lead on parking control this year (condensed parking is really better than having you all strung out from Zachary to JUTSON along Old Scenic like years past) and taking care of the yard maintenance the day before the show. The rest of you don't realize the work Donald puts in to keep the front yard of the Juke Joint from looking like a misaligned sugar cane field. That grass, that fence line, that trim around the building. Donald took care of that. And lastly my staff. Melvina for slaving over a hot oven and fryer all day and most of the night. She's the one who messes up those chicken wings you all love to eat when you come to the Juke Joint. Sandor, who does all the little things. From the artwork you see for my posters, writing the grant for the Mud-In (third year), keeping me on my toes concerning my finances, and he was the one who did the outreach with media outlets that promoted the Mud-In. Sandor went on WJBO, drove to New Orleans (with me), got the word out to BRHS, and used a personal contact at WAFB (Sandor says he went to LSU with Steve) to let the public know about Teddy's Juke Joint and the Mud-In. And while she is the last person I thank here, she is the first person in my heart and when all else fails will always stand behind me. I am speaking of course of my wife for 30+ years, Miss Nancy. She was my financial backer this year, moreso than ever. She worked behind the bar and helped in the kitchen from 9 AM Saturday till 1 AM Sunday. She helped to prepare food for two days prior till the festival and on top of all of this, did this all on a degenerating hip and an impacted tooth (that required us to rush to the dentist Friday morning just so we could reduce swelling on her face just so she could see again). I always say the Juke Joint is the "House that Teddy built." But it would be nothing without Nancy being faithfully behind me every step of the way. Thank you again baby, nobody (including me) works harder at the Juke Joint than you do. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't happen if I don't unlock the doors and let you in, but at the same time an event of this magnitude doesn't occur without the assistance of many behind me. Thank you for making the 2009 Muddy Waters Memorial Birthday Party a success. Teddy Johnson Proprietor of the Teddy's Juke Joint, 1979-2009

And to DIAMOND, the lady who fed us the best Louisiana style red beans & rice and fried chicken I've ever tasted; and to all my new found friends and family in BATON ROUGE, you are fantastic and I had a blast! I can't wait to visit you again! ============ THE 12th. ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL HERITAGE CELEBRATION, 2009 By Joan Turner (Published in BLUES BLAST, April 16, 2009) On Sunday, April 5, 2009, Baton Rouge, Louisiana hosted the 12th. Annual International Heritage Celebration. Presented by the Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs, the event is designed to bring the community closer together by highlighting its rich muli-cultural makeup with music, food, dance, storytelling and educational booths from many countries. One of the most colorful and interesting features of the celebration this year was the Parade of Nations. With bagpipers leading the way, Mayor – President Melvin "Kip" Holden led country representatives as they marched dressed in native costumes and presenting their countries' flags. The free event highlighted entertainment on three stages, the International Music Stage, the International Dance Stage and the Louisiana Heritage Music Stage. Under the capable direction of producer and Baton Rouge music industry leader Henry Turner, Jr., the Louisiana Heritage Music Stage provided a rich variety of talent from many musical genres across the state, including Cajun, gospel, rock, jazz, reggae, funk, Native American and blues. Outstanding performers included Lori Kates, Briggs Brown and Bayou Cajuns, Jonathan Long and the Baton Rouge Soul Explosion, Wonton Lust, Lil Fallay, the Herman Jackson Trio, Nukie, Step Child, King Solomon, the GreyHawk Band, Henry Turner, Jr. & Flavor, Gordon Nurse and the Steel Drummer/Island Band. Of special interest was a performance by the Mystic Belly Dancers, a Tahitian dance group from Corpus Christi, Texas. Other fun events included a children's and adult's limbo contest. In a city known as the "Blues Music Capital of Louisiana" that has produced such legendary artists as Slim Harpo, Buddy Guy, Henry Gray, Raful Neal, Tabby Thomas and his son, Grammy Award-winning super star Chris Thomas King, great blues performances are expected on such occasions, and blues lovers at the International Heritage Celebration were not disappointed. Veteran blues artist and former Malaco Records star King Solomon and his band turned in an outstanding performance. Solomon, born Johny B. Willis, is a master bassist, a writer, singer, producer, and performer who has toured throughout the United States and in several European countries. He now owns his own Knapp Town Sound label and his album Blues Take One is currently available. Nukie, an exciting new star on the Baton Rouge blues and soul scene, thrilled fans as she belted out her songs like a young Aretha Franklin. Her sultry voice and warm Southern charm is a winning combination. Nukie, born Dekisha Miller, is a powerful performer with vibrant talent and a unique style all her own. Her new singles are available from Hit City Records. Jonathan "Boogie" Long, a gifted young songwriter and blues artist, thrilled fans with his dynamic performance. Jonathan and his band, the Baton Rouge Soul Explosion, recently represented the Baton Rouge Blues Society in the 2009 International Blues Competition in Memphis. Picked by B. B. King's Blues Club to perform at The New Daisy Theater for the title of King of Beale Street, Jonathan sang his way to second place and a $500.00 cash prize. His debut album is coming soon and his own composition "Blues Revolution" is a hit in the making. Lil Fallay, Chris Andrus, a finalist for Southern Soul Male Artist of the Year, 2009, rocked the stage with his charismatic and exciting performance. He brought festival goers to their feet when he introduced his new dance sensation the "Zydefunk Slide." A polished and professional artist with a string of hit albums, including Dreams Do Come True, Taste Me, and Follow My Lead, Fallay thrilled listeners with songs like "A Mother's Love," and "L-O-V-E under Arrest." The 2009 International Heritage Celebration was an outstanding event that spotlighted the diversity and hospitality of Baton Rouge and the remarkable array of talent the city and state have to offer. Plans are already underway to make next year's festival even more memorable. For more information: http://www.brcwa...comhttp://www.myspace...com/ihclouisiana..stage

Photo: We are very sad to learn that pianist .. Eddie Bo, one of New Orleans' greatest and most beloved performers, passed on Wednesday, March 18 at the age of 78. His legacy is profound, and he was considered the last of the "junker"-style pianists, fusing jazz, R&B, funk, soul, and blues seasoned with New Orleans flavor. Edwin Joseph Bocage got his start in 1955 on the Ace Records label, and by 1961 he had his first hit, the novelty dance tune "Check Mr. Popeye." He went on to release more singles than any New Orleans artist except Fats Domino, including "Check Your Bucket" and his signature "Hook and Sling," which made it to #13 on the R&B chart in 1969. Eddie Bo was more than just an entertainer, penning "My Dearest Darling" for Etta James and producing albums for the likes of Art Neville, Irma Thomas, and Johnny Adams. He even lent his carpentry skills - by which he sustained a living through much of the 1970s - to build a studio for the Ric label, just one of over 40 labels he worked with over the years. He amassed an impressive collection of awards and honors, including a pair of Lifetime Acheivement Awards from the South Louisiana Music Association and the title of New Orleans musical ambassador to Pakistan. Funeral arrangements are still pending, so check back soon for information regarding memorial services for this legendary New Orleans treasure. photo: www.daylife.com

Red Stick, Blues Week Partner
By RED STICK INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL
Families, music lovers and animation enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience two community events next month when Red Stick International Animation Festival and Baton Rouge Blues Week team up to offer the community a fun, artistic experience. Baton Rouge Blues Week will take place April 18-26, and Red Stick International Animation Festival will be held April 22-25. Both events occur in the downtown Baton Rouge Arts District. During some of the overlapping dates, the two events will offer film screenings and musical performances that attendees of both can enjoy. “As Baton Rouge enhances its national reputation as an artistic and creative hub, we are pleased to partner with another successful local event to show our guests the synergy between art and music,” Red Stick International Animation Festival Director Stacey Simmons said. “These co-occurring events give people from our community a chance to enjoy two great entertainment venues at once, and it lets us showcase Baton Rouge’s unique cultural highlights to the out-of-town visitors who will travel here to attend Red Stick and Blues Week.” Following the Baton Rouge Blues Week Live After Five outdoor musical performance featuring Henry Gray & The Cats with special guest Buddy Flett on Friday, April 24, Red Stick and Blues Week will host an original live animation performance by artist J. Walt, set to blues music from the Elvin Killerbee Band, in the Manship Theatre. On Saturday, April 25, both events will host a showing of the acclaimed recent release, "Sita Sings the Blues." This animated film tells the story of an Indian girl, set to Southern American blues music. Attendees at both Blues Week and Red Stick are welcome to attend either event for free. “‘Sita Sings the Blues’ is a prime example of the international influence of American blues music,” Johnny Palazzotto, Baton Rouge Blues Week director said. “This animated film is extraordinary and should be seen by all. The Baton Rouge creative community is hosting some very special events from April 18-26. The Red Stick Animation Festival expands the Baton Rouge horizon, and Baton Rouge Blues Week displays the best of our blues heritage. Invite your friends to Baton Rouge for an enlightening week of the arts!” For more information on Red Stick activities, please visit www.redstickfestival.org . I had a blues blast last week up in Memphis for the 2009 International Blues Challenge. This year was the 25th Anniversary for the Challenge. Jonathon and his band didn't get into the finals but he did win a chance to perform at The New Daisy Theater on Saturday night for the title of King of the Blues on Beale St. The merchants on Beale picked which bands they wanted to compete and BB Kings chose Jonathon. He placed in the top four bands out of twelve and actually came out #2. The band won $500 but they didn't win the cool blues jackets that went to the #1 band. They were so close.
The band played their hearts out, played hard and were very professional the whole time they were in Memphis. I wish Jonathon and his band could have snagged the title they worked hard for. They played a second set and waited til 2 am.
The Phil Gates Band out of California won the jackets and in my opinion they were better the first time they had played. But I can't take it away from him, they were a good band. Phil Gates has a smile and radiance about him that never stops.
I am telling you Baton Rouge, Jonathon and Poole's writing and singing ability is out the box, over the top..I am not sure if Poole co-wrote the song, "Blues Revolution," but the whole bands performance should have earned them best song title on Beale Street. They drew in a crowd everytime they played that song and even had a following down at The New Daisy. The song is going to go somewhere, someday, somehow. I said, it should be on XM radio right now!
Maybe when Jonathon gets his music on cd, WBRH should consider giving it air time. The Baton Rouge Blues Festival is coming up in April, Johnny P. if your listening you really should give these boys a chance to be heard on stage, "Blues Revolution," will one day be a hit.
They may not have been in the top three from The International Blues Challenge, but they were heard, they played their heart and souls out and made contacts. You couldn't ask anymore of these guys. They are #1 in my book.
Jonathon Long & The Blues Revolution
Jonathon Long: Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar
Jermyn "Big Poole": Vocals, Keyboard
Zach Matchett: Bass
Chad Solomon: Drums
Darren Jones: Saxaphone
Thank You Jonathon and your band members for representing the Baton Rouge Blues Society so well. We are proud of everyone of you!
