If you haven't heard, the National SCRABBLE Championship is in Dayton this weekend. I'm digging through the stacks to find some remarkable tomes on language, vocabulary building, jargon, and other linguistic esoterica.

I'm finding word puzzlers, place names, and all kinds of goodies to help the competitive SCRABBLEr nail the landing in the exercise of mental gymnastics.

Then again, perhaps it's best to rest the mind between matches. A good DVD, a comic book or manga, or a mystery novel might be the trick. We've got much more than you might expect, and used books are a bargain. Plus, it's kind of like recycling... bring your books in to trade for something fresh. 

Travelers, if you've got a book with you on your trip and you finish it up, bring it in for something to read on the way home.

With "Julie & Julia" about to hit theaters (Aug 7th) I couldn't help but notice some Julia Child books on our shelves while searching for canning books for a customer.

Read a book, have a feast, make new friends!

When the power goes out, what to do? Naturally, we recommend you pick up a few good books, comics, and magazines. 

Mini Maglite flashlights are great makeshift candles for reading.  Just unscrew the head and use it as a base to stand the flashlight on end.  Indoors, a bright pocket flashlight clipped to the side of your belt, the waist of your pants, or in your pocket will point up to the ceiling reflecting enough light to move around safely, leave your hands free, and it won't shine in your eyes. 

Don't throw out your food.  It's going to go bad if you don't use it. HAVE A FEAST!  Organize a neighborhood or office cookout or grilling party!  Everyone fire up the grills, cook what you've got, invite neighbors, friends and family!  What better way to get to know the people around you.

If you've got some skills you might want to try your own home repairs.  We've got books to help you along the way.  We've also got plenty of grilling books to help you with that neighborhood feast.  And don't forget everything else we have available just to pass the time.  Bestsellers, classics, non-fiction, childrens books, history, comics, sports, art, music... you name, we've got it.
