There are a good many books dealing with time travel and some of the best have little or nothing to do with science fiction.

Dad (Walter) just finished this one and thought it threw in a bit too much contact with prominent history to be believable, but he was smiling and laughing when he told us about it.  While not precisely to his taste, it sounded like a fun tale, and Maureen Corrigan's review on NPR's Fresh Air was all good.

Check it out!  Now available at Bonnett's, 1 copy, used, cheap. Please stop in.

Iron Man's cinematic origin story was every bit as well done as the one in "Batman Begins."  Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Wayne (Batman) are similar types of characters.  Both are playboy billionaires who've inherited family wealth (and technology) garnered through military contracts.  Each character's personal motivations and goals fall on the side of 'good' but neither of them are 'Boy Scouts,' like Superman.

"Iron Man" is a great looking movie full of action and worth seeing on the big screen, but I recommend sitting no closer than halfway between the front and back rows.  We sat a bit too close to clearly see all the action.  Also, in case you haven't heard, you need to sit through the end of the credits for a little surprise.

Great effects and origin aside, the story-telling gets quites choppy toward the end of "Iron Man," and I'm honestly a bit ticked-off about it.  I don't have enough info to know for sure if the story-telling was butchered in the editing room or neglected as early as the scripting process.  The point is, the parts left out were obvious and most certainly detracted from the film.  The so-called 'extended version' will certainly be available on DVD.  But...

Movie admission is no less than half the cost of the eventual DVD and you don't get to leave the theater with anything but a memory.  Shouldn't that memory be something completely special instead of half-assed?  Allegedly 'restoring' these bits on DVD and calling it an "extended edition" or "bonus feature" is simply a rip-off.

We'll be closing about 5pm ET on New Year's Eve and will be closed on New Year's Day.  On January 2, 2008 we'll return to our regular store hours: Mon-Sat from Noon-8pm ET, closed Sundays.

I've mentioned before that we don't have an exact date handy for the opening of Bonnett's Book Store, but we know the doors were opened in 1939.  2008 will be Bonnett's 69th year doing business from 502 East Fifth Street... the longest continuously running business in the Oregon District!

2007 has been a tough year for just about everyone and only time will tell what 2008 holds in store, but our founders, Harold and Ruth Bonnett, opened our door for the first time during hard years and we look forward to continuing their tradition of having some of the very best deals anywhere on books, comics, magazines, and movies.

Time permitting, I hope to make better use of this MySpace and our other blogs and sites to keep you informed of our latest arrivals, fresh collectible comics, special events, etc., so pay attention!  ;-)

HAPPY 2008 EVERYONE!  :-)

That big word in the subject line is our way of saying "Happy Holidays" to people who complain about the phrase "Happy Holidays".  We came up with it back in  the earlier half of this decade.  Instead of leaving out anyone's favorite holiday we've tried to include a bit of all the well-known winter celebrations in our big word in order to acknowledge and honor each one instead of sweeping American differences under the rug with a generic phrase like "Happy Holidays".  And, it's a fun word, too!  Kinda like Mary Poppins' "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" or even Big Bird's "Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwyxz".  We don't mind how anyone wishes to celebrate, we simply offer our holiday well-wishes to all, inclusively.  So, Merry Christmaramahanakwanzamasoltice and a Happy New Year!
