For the second straight year, the readers of the Illinois Times have voted The Station the Best Original Band in Springfield, followed by runners up (two of my favorite bands) The Micah Walk Band and NIL8. Thank you to everyone for all of your continued support! We love you. Carter from: http://npaper-wehaa.com/illinoistimes/2009/09/17/#2009/10/29/?mode=2&article=627193 .. CENTRAL ILLINOIS MUSIC BEST ORIGINAL BAND
The Station The Station, repeating as Best Original Band (also, in 2008, the Band Most Likely to Hit it Big) celebrates 10 years as a band in 2009. Just a few months ago founding bassist Josh Kerska left the group and local bass virtuoso Jeff Cunningham joined, while the band continues on as one of the hottest progressive rock acts in the Midwest. The jamming quartet of Cunningham, Dave Littrell, Dave Carter and Kevin Lemen, obviously known for original music, presents an annual Halloween show focusing on a specific music group or event. This year see the Best Original Band for 2009 perform a night of Sly and the Family Stone tunes at City Nights Theater on Oct. 31. Be sure to check out another Station show to hear the catchy and intricate selfpenned tunes that won them this category for two years straight.Runner-ups Micah Walk Band and NIL8 show the incredible range of talent our readers had to choose from within the Springfield original music scene. Runners-up: Micah Walk Band, NIL8

Hello everyone, we are pleased to announce that Springfield/Chatham native Jeff Cunningham has officially joined The Station on bass guitar. You may remember Jeff from the Three Amigos, featuring Jeff and Dave and Dave from The Station, a musical trio that spawned The Station staples Rural Route One and Midwest Moonshine. Jeff, a graduate of the University of North Texas, has been an awe-inspiring fixture of the Central Illinois music scene performing in Soul Pudding, Lowphatt (with NIL8’s Bruce Williams and 56 Hope Rd’s Greg Fundis), Senses, Los Injectors, The Three Amigos, and many more over the years on the 4, 5, and 6 string bass as well as the fretless and upright bass. Jeff will bring years of experience and jaw-dropping virtuosity to the stage. We’re very excited as we look towards the future, which includes beginning work on our fifth album this fall, and we can’t wait for you to hear what we have in store! Our fall schedule will include stops in some our favorite cities across the Midwest as well as a two-night Halloween extravaganza in Springfield, Missouri and Springfield Illinois! Springfield, Illinios- In a move that would make Charles Lindbergh proud, The Station lights are flying to St. Louis. 'So what, I've seen The Staion's lights in St. Louis dozens of times' you may say. But not like this you haven't! After intense negotiations with Ryan Wilhite, or "WILHITE" as TheStatioNation may know him, Station LD The Illuminator has agreed to tour with Jake's Leg for their September 11th world tour. "We were really looking for somebody that is realatively okay, is somewhat inexperienced, and just can really make sure that there are lights on onstage. We could've hired a number of LD's that are very, very good and have a very professional manner about them, but they were all booked. And that's what led us to The Illuminator." So with a heavy heart and heavier lights, The Illuminator is packing up his things and heading South. All the way to the Manchester Homecoming, which is about 95 miles from home. 'Oh that's not very far' you may think to yourself. But have you ever thought of the multitude of things that can happen in 95 mile? Say, for instance that you're just driving down the interstate, 'loddy doddy doddy', stupid wind in your face because the damned window is stuck. So you lean over to try and unjam it and BBOOOOMM.....a bug just hit your windshield. Now you have to take your other hand and push in the button to spray the windshield wiper fluid. Talk about a workout! Guess what?!?! You're all out of fluid!! Now you have to get completely off the interstate to get some fluid, and while you're there, you decide to get some nourishment. After grabbing the fluid, teriyake beef jerky, gas station rollerburger and some nachos whith cheese, you're on the road. GODDMANIT you forgot to put the fluid in and now you've hit a bump and spilled ketchup from the delicious rollerburger on your brand new Planet Playground Records shirt. Oh wait...a phone call. It's WILHITE!!! Sweet, you needed the directions to the gig. But wait, windows still stuck down and the wind is blowing, can't hear a word he's saying! So you set the phone down, try to lean over and unjam it and...SHIT knocked the cheese sauce on the floor. After violently jerking the wheel because the sauce is on the floorboard and you're trying to pick it up really quick, your phone falls in between the seat and center console. Now you're yelling at WILHITE TO STAY ON THE PHONE, I'M TRYING TO SQUEEZE MY HAND INTO A CRACK THAT NO HAND HAS EVER FIT INTO......WAIT.....JUST THINK SKINNY....SUCK YOUR BREATH IN....GOT IT!!! Okay. So now you're on the phone with someone you can't hear, your dinner is on your shirt and floorboard, there's a freaking bug cemetery on your windshield, with a brand new gallon of fluid in the backseat, a window that's eternally stuck down and a hand that is now half the size it was earlier in the day. And you're only 8 miles from home. All of this so Jake's Leg can keep from having a dark stage. Now that's dedication!

In a year full of changes, The Station is going through our fair share of evolution as well. After a decade of sharing the stage together, founding bass player Josh Kerska and The Station are parting ways. As we look into the future, we’d like to wish Josh the best of luck in his future endeavors and leave him with our sincere thanks for sharing all those miles on the road with us. Stay tuned for updates on The Station’s fall plans, there's quite a bit in store.

Ok, so many years ago, we were driving overnight home from either Kansas City or Springfield, MO, I don't remember which. As we were departing, Dave and Josh, and maybe Jar, began to play the Top 5 game to stay awake. Top 5 Swarchenegger movies, top 5 Tom Cruise, top 20 movies of all time (Lucas is still in Josh's top 20, much to dave's dismay), etc. Well, I fell asleep in the back of the van. Fast forward to sunrise, I wake up and look around, sun is coming up over STL, and I hear "ok, top 5 Steve Gutenburg movies!" They were still at it! This just goes to show, the top 5 game is engaging and keeps you awake and has been used by the station many a late night drive. When I saw this comic strip I just started laughing out loud and no one around me really got it. Well, the story above is why it's so funny to me, and the singing drummer tidbit is funny cause it's true. now you know. -carter

So Jar and I (carter) are sitting on my couch on a saturday afternoon evaluating video footage of the band for the DVD project we're working on and I'm tracking our show from last night. It gets brought to my attention that we had a jambase review online. So I go check it out and have to laugh at the irony of reading a review about the performace that's playing in my dvd player!
Enjoy! Carter PS, Jar says "eat lots of bananas cause throat ulcers suck." You heard it here first.
Read the whole article at http://www.jambase.com/Articles/17736/Loyal-Earth-Festival-04.16-04.20-St.-Louis
"The first standout performance of the weekend came from the Springfield, IL band The Station. Their set was characterized by dissonant, jazzy melodies that would snap instantly into catchy choruses, with blazing guitar and sax work to top it off. Jam after jam peaked perfectly, with some pleasantly surprising excursions into trance territory a la The Disco Biscuits. The talent of lead axe man Kevin Leman was undeniable; he sounded conspicuously like a young Jimmy Herring, shredding through dissonant jazz scales but displaying a keen sense of ear-pleasing melody." Neil Salsich - Jambase.com
