CAPITAL of Culture year changed it all for Liverpool quartet The Mission Babies.
It gave singer Kenny Van Johnston the inspiration to leave the Royal Marines, after serving three and a half years, to pursue his life-long dream to start a band.
"It's only this year things have really started to take off," he explains. "But I've been playing guitar and writing songs since I was eight.
Š"We are one of Liverpool Carling Academy's showcase bands. We sold the venue out in June. Since then our fan base has been growing and growing."
I caught up with the lads to find out more about their musical inspiration.
Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen
"IT'S a lyrical masterpiece and in my opinion one of the greatest songs ever written," says Kenny. "The line 'just wrap your legs around these velvet rims and strap your hands across my engines' is pure and utter genius. Bruce Springsteen is the true working class hero and a master of his trade and this song has always been a massive inspiration in my life."
Winter Song by Lindisfarne
Lead guitarist Jay Ryder says: "Just a little poetic reminder that life, no matter how dull it may seem, shouldn't be taken for granted as there is someone further down the ladder than yourself.
Medicated Goo by Traffic
Bass player Billy Lake says: "It has everything, rock, rhythm, blues, jazz and soul but the song still has loads of space. Fantastic musicianship."
Green Eyes by Coldplay
Drummer Danny Mcsays: "It is a mellow, up-beat, catchy tune with an awesome drive all the way through the song that gradually picks up. It's one of Coldplay's best songs in my opinion."
Mission Babies headline Liverpool's Carling Academy on Friday 19 December. The gig will also be their EP launch. For details see www.myspace.com/ missionbabies.

Well stone the crows,if ya gonna be hit in the face full on ya might as well do it in style!! This is just what happened to me last night when I went to hear Mission Babies at the Carling Academy Liverpool. All I can say is that I was blasted in the face what to me seemed like rocket fuel, but realised it was these four Liverpool lads rockin' the stage, and partying for what seemed like just five minutes, ended in a 10 tune event going on for a full glorious hour. Pure, pure joy.
The Clocks were supposed to headline, but they did a runner, leaving the Mission Babies to take the mantel, and to headline themselves. As it happened there were only few audience members in, but plenty of family and friends to support them, which by scouse standards was a great thing. The show must go on and in the words of bassist Billy, "plenty of room to dance". Well he picks the right words all right because the tunes, written by lead singer Kenny Johnston, do just that.
They started with an energetic number just to kick it all off, and from then on, electrified the whole place with other tunes such as "It's not your fault" and "Vertigo", giving a sort of rock/calypso type rhythm and feel, with an awesome session from the drummer Danny MC, just 15 years old, but what a talent. I hope they keep him, as he kicked that kit all the way through to the Pier Head and back. Well done mate.
Kenny, lead singer/front, and ex marine, pumps up the volume with a volatile voice, big sounding, and raw in energy. The band follow him, it's all big. Well, he must be doing something right to have followed his dreams, leaving the marines to fight for themselves, and who can blame him when you have such talent.
Lead guitarist Jay came through with some fine riffs, but sometimes disappeared into the ether. Need to turn the volume up on a speaker a bit here, but was obviously commanding the instrument to it's full potential, most of the time.
Bassist Billy whacked in there too, helping to give the rock a steady flow down below with some nice bass lines in songs such as Kenny's Mum's favourite tune "Hard to find Love....". Cool song, and in Kenny's modest words "Classic this one". It so is. To say these lads had a 'raw energy' would be an understatement! Especially with tunes like "Weekend Riots" pulling the roof off. "This is great stuff", I kept saying to myself, really fired up. Also, a lovely touch was the song "Crossfire", a ballad, played in memory of the singer's cousin brian, "thanks for coming you are all so beautiful", was one line, and really heartfelt, showing that they can play gently and sensitively when they want. I had a lump in my throat at this one.
These lads show passion, talent, give a performance, have great songs, and work together to achieve a unique sound, and most important give a great night's entertainment in what could be a great Liverpool band.
If you want raw in your face stuff, go see Mission Babies... adn if you want a deep feeling rock ballad too, I can highly recommend them. Do yourself a favour: go see Mission Babies before they are snatched up and signed by a London label and not seen again. After all they are going to play in New York, and well, like any scousers just don't do things by halves. Pure, pure joy.
