Own Little World - The Ramblings of a Part-Time Webcomic Creator

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:07 PM
Hello everyone.

In recently redesigning my website I decided that it was time to really make it the focal point for all my various projects and words. As such I created a NEW blog that'll run off the site.

It can be found HERE

For the most part what this means is that... well this will be the last blog I post here. In many ways it's the last anything I'll really be doing on MySpace as I've slowly grown more and more bored with the site. (Yes, I'm on Facebook more now).

I'll still come in from time to time, but if you're looking for new info on the comics or my life, you're going to have to go to the official BjCCreations blog to find it.

Thanks for subscribing all this time and look for some RSS feeds on the bottom of my new blog. They should hopefully work. :)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

GEEK 169 - Ah... the Fumi thing. I had hit a point where I honestly couldn't figure out what to do with her. Without planning it I had written her in such a way where she was always butting heads with Ian and their relationship became less and less an expression of my marriage. Sam and Hannah kind of took that over. Fumi kind of became this character stuck in limbo since I didn't know where to go with her.

So I decided on Japan. Have we seen the last of Fumi? Probably not.

GEEK 170 - This is a REALLY local thing. The FOX station here won't appear on cable in exactly twelve hours. They're basically idiots, so we'll see how long it lasts. If it goes all the way through February the only way to see them will be off a dish or by picking up their digital signal over air (which we've tried... it doesn't work too well). So it's going to be interesting to see what happens. Thankfully though there's the internet so I'm not really worried about missing anything.

GEEK 171 - I rented and beat The Force Unleashed for the Wii. Somewhere in there I found the time to put out this strip.

GEEK 172 - This one just brings up a couple of plot points again. I do have a plan for these, but I'm working them in slowly between the geek statements.

GEEK 173 - This was the exact reaction I had about this. I read the headline "BUFFY Wins An Emmy!!!" and got all excited, then I found out it was just an online poll. Not that I have a problem with Buffy getting an award, but I was kind of hoping it'd be from the official people and not simply because the Whedon faithful eat, drink, and sleep the internet.

GEEK 174 - Ah... HEROES. The blessing and curse itself. So far they've caught my interest with a couple of interesting bits, but there's still that bit in the back of my head that tells me they're going to @$% it up somehow. We'll just have to see, but so far I'm not hating it the way I did Season 2.

GEEK 175 - I watched the first few minutes of the Knight Rider show and when KITT became a pickup truck I officially gave up on it. I get that cars are more advanced now than they were when the original series was done, but there's GOT to be something more interesting for them to do than have KITT transform left and right.

GEEK 176 - GEEK KON! I hit up Madison's greatest con last weekend and had a blast! I don't have the funds to hit bigger cons, so it was nice to have something I could actually attend and have fun at. Geek Jeopardy was fun, but it's so hard to remember to put the responses in the form of a question! As I'm sure everyone's seen, there's a link above the comic to some pictures Jamie took of various costumes.

GEEK 177 - -sigh- Two more days and I'm 30! It's kind of strange to think about. I'm thankful though that I'm more or less where I want to be in life. Sure there's things I need to fix or what-not (Jenny Everywhere Chronicles?), but overall I'm at a good place in my life.

GEEK 178 - I read about The Graysons yesterday and I personally can't imagine what they're going to do with it. For those that don't know, it's basically a Smallville style show about Dick (or D.J. as he'll be known in the show) Grayson and his parents. Why? I'm not kidding when I liken it to doing a show about Hamlet when he's all happy. We aren't talking about Superman here who had powers is whole life or Batman who trained to be a hero the whole damn time, we're talking about a character that was in a circus! Anything they do in their "unique take on the character" will just be a slap in the face of the character. Look what they've been doing with Smallville (Doomsday the bartender anyone). Drastically changing the character doesn't work. Why can't they just make a new character, why does it HAVE TO be some known entity?

Anyway, that's all I've got for right now. As always thanks for reading the above and the strip itself.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Sorry I haven't blogged in a while... just haven't gotten around to it.

GEEK 163 - Living in Wisconsin you can't help but see some crazed Packer fans. I grew up here and I've seen my fair share of games over the years, but there are people that take it to such an extreme. The whole Bring Brett Back @$% proves that point. The idea for sports fans to talk a different language entirely (which let's face it, they kind of do) was an interesting visual concept. It kind of only made sense to have Sam as the fan, since he's that athletic kind of guy that probably played football at some level in school.

GEEK 164 - Apple releases a bunch of new iPods and we still haven't seen ANYTHING in terms of new laptops. This annoys me for a couple of reasons. 1) I NEED to get a new laptop soon and I might actually be able to afford one and 2) The Macbook Air is so flipping cool and tiny you can't tell me they couldn't make a screaming fast machine in something the size of what I'm using now. In the back of my mind I keep holding out hope for some kind of tablet computer that would combo the two pieces of technology I use right now to make the comics. -sigh-

GEEK 165 - I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of FRINGE. Personally I enjoyed it, but it's not a show I can say "WATCH WATCH WATCH" to just anybody. I think everyone kind of has to make up their own minds on it. We'll just have to see what the next few episodes are like and see if FOX dumps it early.

GEEK 166 - Jamie and I went to a book store the other day (something we do a lot) and I flipped through the last volume of Y: The Last Man, only to find that it was all printed on newsprint (or whatever is the smallest step up from newsprint). I was SHOCKED! Why in the hell would you EVER print a trade paperback on newsprint. Maybe that was cool fifteen years ago, but now people (or at least me) kind of view a trade paperback as being like a high-end DVD release. Collecting something on newsprint just doesn't make a lick of sense to me. ESPECIALLY something as cool and noteworthy as Y: The Last Man. As I say in the comic I'm hoping for a super high-end hardcover at some point (or a super high-end paperback since 60 issues in a hardcover MIGHT cost a bit too much).

GEEK 167 - There's a lot of people out there right now that took the news of Dollhouse's break badly. I know we ALL are feeling like we're reliving Firefly, but the one and only thing that still give me hope is that Joss is still in charge. This was HIS choice, not the network's. Time will tell, but I think we're going to see this show pull through (at least for one full season). If not... so be it, it's not like we've never dealt with that before.

GEEK 168 - I watched the new footage of The Day The Earth Stood Still and I have to say that I'm actually looking forward to this. It seems like an interesting concept and a decent take on a FIFTY-YEAR-OLD movie. I get that it's got Keanu in it and he's not a favored actor, but let's give him a chance here. This movie kind of has a disaster genre feel to it, so I'm excited about that.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Okay, I've got to show everyone something here...

I'm sorry, but can someone please tell me how this is funny? I'm a huge fan of Spaceballs and when I heard they were doing an animated series based on it I got really excited, but this is NOT what I had in mind.

I get that Flash is awesome and more and more people are using it to make animation now, but could we maybe get someone better? This looks like really amatuerish crap! I'm sorry to say it so bluntly, but it does. I'm really let down here. I'm almost happy I don't get G4 so there's no way I could see this travesty.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

That's all I've got for right now. Thanks for reading.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

GEEK 161 - I found this little tidbit out the other day and I was like "whoa"... I never realized that I was in fact the same age as the Lego Minifig. I have a feeling now that all of my major Birthdays are going to be marked by news stories saying how OLD those little guys are.

For me, as the GIANT Lego freak that I am, it's kind of cool to think that in every way I'm of that first generation to have really REALLY good Legos.

I wanted to do the research, but I didn't, to see how long it was before they added other expressions to the minifig's head. I know it took YEARS.

GEEK 162 - This is a direction I've wanted to go for some time, at least on the level of hinting to it. Obviously he's going to have to try again at some point.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

So today is kind of a big day for me. I'm officially done with the morning shift at the station. Starting next week Tuesday I'm back to nights after 13 months having to get up at three in the morning.

It's such a big change that I sort of don't know what to make of it yet. My whole next week is just going to be odd since I'm technical directing MOST of the shows in a six day stretch. I'm hopeful that by the end of it I feel more comfortable with it than I do now.

I'm just happy that I'll actually be able to go to a midnight show sometime. :)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I have most of the next few days off, so I shouldn't have any problem getting another Jenny Everywhere page online (most likely tomorrow or Sunday).

That's really all I've got for right now. Have a good weekend everyone.

GEEK 159 - This strip more or less says everything I want to about this. It just bugs me that after a few weeks Dark night was down to TWO screenings a day while Mama @$% Mia was still doing like six shows a night. Just annoys me.

GEEK 160 - I didn't intend to do this strip, but after hearing the news yesterday and really thinking about it I felt that I really wanted to pay a bit of homage to a man that probably did more to affect our movie-going experience than most of us will ever know.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

ISSUE 2 - PAGE 7!!!!

Amy is a very special character for me. There are a lot of things that I intend to do with her throughout the series, so it's really nice to FINALLY really get her on the page.

I want to try and push this concept that she's a bit soft spoken, which is why I've been making her words a smaller font size. I tried a 7pt on the last page and that kind of felt a bit too small, so now it's an 8pt font. Everyone else is done with a 9pt, so it's not that big of a change, but still.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

LIFE Season 1 on DVD.

I wish I could pick this up right now, but I just don't have the cash to lay down for a DVD season. This show KICKS ASS and if you haven't checked it out I highly recommend it. The main character is one of the most creative and interesting characters I've seen on tv in a long time.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dr. Horrible Soundtrack.

I DID pick this up, mostly because... well seriously why WOULDN'T I, this @$% is awesome on a level I couldn't have imagined when I first heard about it.

Again, if you've never checked it out... then shame on you!!!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I've got to get something off my chest.

@$% you FOX!!! Could you be bigger @$$holes?

You can probably figure out on your own what that was about.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

That's all I've got for today. More GEEK tomorrow.

Hello everyone,

After what seems like FOREVER, I'm finally back and I'm finally updating both of the comics again.

It seems like it's been forever, but it HAS been two months.

I've taken that time to really look at stuff (both in my real life and my creative life) and see what works and what doesn't. I'm sorry that process took so long, I'd wanted to update sooner but my schedule at work has gotten very taxing of late as I train on a new piece of equipment.

Hopefully in a week or so I'll only be working one shift and everything kind finally calm down (more or less). It's odd to me though, since it's been almost a perfect year since I moved to the morning shift.

What an odd year it's been.

While I got used to waking up that early to go to work, I never felt like I really found time to be creative like I had been working nights (i.e. when I launched GEEK). I'm hoping that switching back to a nocturnal way of life will help me reconnect even more with my art and writing.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

GEEK 158!!!!

So I'm trying something new art-wise. This is just a start point that I'm going to kind of… well start from. It's very important to me to have GEEK update five days a week (not really sure why) and what I've got set up with the art will allow me to do that.

During my time off I really REALLY looked at GEEK from a writing stand point and made a few decisions about the direction of the strip. Firstly I've decided to go back to the "single strip, single concept" method where each update is a solo piece talking about something or other. Secondly I've decided to kind of dial back the relationship stories. As you'll find this week they're still there, I'm not going to get rid of them completely, but the focus of the comic will be on geeking.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Jenny Everywhere Chronicles – Issue 2 – Page 6

I still intend to have this comic only update a couple of times a week, but for the next few weeks I want to try and bump that up to three pages in an effort to catch up. If I hadn't shut down I'd be almost done with Issue 2 right now but obviously I'm only a forth of the way there now.

I want to explain something from Page 5 while I've got the chance, the thing that was "moving" behind Chuck at the top of the page is NOT the thing that's causing the alarm (as Page 6 shows you what was). I had thought about a particular design for the Wilson which would involve chunks of the ship sort of floating around a central core (where the bridge and what-not would be). While I still may eventually use that idea, I've kind of scrapped showing it since right now it may confuse people too much.

As this page should reveal as well, while Chaos is RIGHT OUTSIDE the ship, the alarm is only picking up Odious in some other universe!

There's so much to this issue that I really love and can't wait to show you. The character of Odious is one that I started developing when I first found Jenny Everywhere four years ago. He's such a fun character to write and I really REALLY want to show him off to you guys.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

You may have noticed at some point during the whole "down-time" thing that I updated the look of the Chronicles website. I finally figured out how to code the pages so if you're on any given issue it shows all the correct stuff including the accurate portrait of the version of Jenny appearing in that issue. If you go back a few pages to where Issue 1 ends and Issue 2 begins you'll see what I'm talking about.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I almost forgot.

I did in fact win the Jenny Everywhere Card Contest. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. At some point later this month the cards go to the printer. I'll let you all know when I've gotten the finished product.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Well that's been one heck of a post up there, so I think I'll leave it at that. I want to thank everyone for reading my stuff and for waiting as I get back on track with everything. It was nice to be able to deal with the gut-punch life dealt to me.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to point you to THIS. There's going to be a card game coming out in a bit (I'm not sure as to how wide spread at this point) that will involve webcomic characters... one of which being Jenny Everywhere.

The design for the card was made into a contest and everyone gets to vote for the winner.

I did up something I'm really happy with and sent it in.

I don't want to be that guy that says that you HAVE to vote for me. There are other deserving entrees, so please vote however you want.

Again, it can all be found HERE.

I'll let you know how it goes when the voting is done.

HOLY @$%!!!!!!!

I'm not going to try and hide the fact that I'm a huge Watchmen fan. I literally carry around my copy in my computer case. This looks AMAZING! If they can find a way to pull off the story I think this may become the greatest comic adaption film ever. I know that's a tall order, but good god does this thing look good!

Let's just say I needed something like this to truly energize me again.

Seriously, check it out. And if you haven't read Watchmen... well then frankly I have to wonder what the hell is the matter with you. :)

I can't get into the details (which is a load of @$% since I probably technically could), but my job just got "redefined". Whereas I once did things I loved and worked with people that I was great friends with (including my wife) I now don't do any of that.

I have a job, which is good, but I'm a solo act now. Whereas I once worked with a crew and did something meaningful, I now have become a glorified stopwatch.

In turn a good friend lost his job, others have been "reassigned". Jamie has been downgraded to part-time, She's lost her benefits and her status as an Editor.

It hasn't been a good day. To say the least.

My mind is so $%^ing shattered right now it's not even funny. If I hear the word "hyper" one more time I think I might go insane.

Sorry, inside joke.

I know that eventually I'll come to accept what's going on or find something different/better, but for right now and for the near future I just can't even think straight about anything.

Nothing seems to make sense.

I... I can't bring myself to do the comics right now for fear of what I'll make them into. This just doesn't feel like the right time to be doing any of that.

I don't know what more to say. I'm so beside myself right now with all the corporate what-have-you that I just can't...

Keep an eye out. Things will be back, when I can focus once again on what I need to do.

Thanks for understanding.
-Benj.

I've kind of been letting this story lead me. Oddly enough it gets us back to Ian and Fumi and the what-have-you between them right now. Go to my forum for GEEK HERE to weigh in on geeky tattoos and the like.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

What's THIS? A Jenny Everywhere Chronicles Page?!?!?!

I realize it's been forever and a day (though it seems like even longer) since I've updated this comic. I'd hoped to do it earlier in the week but got busy with the day job (which became the day job, the night job, and the following day job). Needless to say I've been getting sleep when I can.

I'm not even going to make it a big secret or anything. The person in the last panel of Page 5 IS Chaos. I felt that it was time to show everyone what he looks like (or at least one of his forms... he he). The trees on this page were something that popped into my head while imagining what the page would look like. It hit me that in the depths of space where there isn't a sun right there for plants to feed off of, there would have to be some solution to the whole "we need air" thing. What I came up with are these special trees that can process the faint light of stars and nebula into oxygen.

Really I think it's a good excuse to have cool looking trees INSIDE a spaceship. :)

I'm going to be busting out Page 6 either Friday or Saturday, so be on the look out for that.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Honestly, I need to get some @$%in' sleep. I'll see you all later.
