Ok, so someone let me borrow this new book by Steve Harvey ACT LIKE A LADY, THINK LIKE A MAN and I'm finding it extremely honest and thought provoking. It's not that he's providing any new information that most women already know but he relays it in a way that makes sure you won't forget it. Basically the premise is this: men are very simple to understand. They want three things: support, loyalty and sex. If they are really in love with you they will provide the three p's. Profession, Protection and Provision. Like I said, not exactly rocket science. But what gets me is that women still don't get it. Years after Men Are Like Mars, Women Like Venus, women are still struggling to "figure men out".
We make things way too hard. I've been clued in since my early 20's. See, as a disabled young woman, the true motivations of men were revealed to me quite early. Because my disabilities are physical, most men do not approach me. I am what would be considered average looking, with no outstanding physical features. (Not that I don't think I'm attractive, because I do) My best quality, however, in my opinion is my personality. And unfortunately many men don't "see" your personality at first glance. This is not to say ALL women with disabilities get the short end of the stick because there are men who are attracted to and do approach women of all kinds. I'm sure if I went around the world and met every single man there is, I would find a few that would like to take me out.
My point here is most men are drawn to the outside package first and foremost. They are then captivated by your charming personality and sharp wit as they get to know you. Reading romances,I've always noticed how 90% of the heroines are physically beautiful, stunning and even those who are average are above average in looks. There are a few authors who have taken on physical disabilities--a heroine with a heart problem, a hero that's blind--but for the most part, everyone is physically appealing. That's because it's meant to be a fantasy. Women want fantasy, right?
When I mentioned this to an editor I met at a romance writers conference once, she told me "If you want to read a story about a women heroine with a disability, write one." That easy, right? Wrong. As much as I can fantasize about a man becoming smitten with a woman who walks with a cane, it's hard to write because it rarely ever happens. What is it about her that draws him to her? I don't have the answer to that question so it's hard to expound. And after I do tall such a tale, who is going to read it? Do romance readers want more reality in their fiction or plain fantasy? Only you know.
So, I have a few questions for all you writers and readers out there, men and women alike-- 1) would you ever write/read a story with a disabled heroine? Why or why not? and 2) As a man/woman have you ever been attracted at first sight to someone of the opposite sex with a physical ailment or disability? Did you act on it?
I look forward to hearing your responses. Until next time....

THE ROMANCE READERS CONNECTION is a romance review e-zine connecting readers to the best reads on the scene! I've been a reviewer at TRRC for almost five years and I proudly say many of our reviews are quoted on book covers and websites.
Recently we've undergone a total site make over and invite you to drop in and let us know what you think. Our reviews are listed by genre, with all the newest reviews available on one page. You can also look up reviews by the author's or the reviewer's name (for mine, search Elissa Scott Kyle). It's a clean, modern layout easy to navigate. TRRC also has a blog where authors are guest starring. This is a great way for readers to interact with authors and ask the questions they've always wanted answered.
Author Julie Hyzy is the guest this week and Beverly Jenkins is up next. Keep your eye out for your author of choice--you never know when they might make an appearance. TRRC is a great review site filled with romance, suspense, paranormal, historical and more! Hope you get to visit soon!

Happy New Year! Wow, it's 2009--so hard to believe! I am looking forward to this year with a renewed sense of purpose and vision. My relationship with God has been growing and changing and I know He has wonderful plans in store for me. Jesus gave His life so that I may live with God's blessings and walk with Him always.
I'm on a new mission with my writing--at least 6 short stories published this year and I will be submitting a manuscript to a major publisher. No more waiting, no more holding back. It's easy to get consumed with anxiety and fear when submitting your work--you feel exposed, on display and vulnerable (at least I do) and going after the unknown can be very stressful. But, I would prefer not to live with too many regrets and I don't want to look back and wonder "What would've happened if..."
Writing is cathartic for me--all of my hopes, dreams, and creativity pour out onto the page and sometimes when I read back what I've written, I'm amazed. The process, although hard for me some days, is always magical and I feel blessed God has given me such a gift. Fellow writers, I urge you to pursue your dreams and continue to put pen to paper (or keep fingers on those keys!). Go for everything you would ever wish for because God will fulfill the greatest desires of your heart. Believe and it will be.

I am thrilled at the latest review I received by Deltareviewer on MySpace:
7 of 20 Reviews - A Knight's Illusion by Melissa Wathington Category: Writing and Poetry
A Knight's Illusion Melissa Wathington Lady Leo Publishing November 29, 2008 978-0-982101704 Romance - ebook 5 Stars
Lisette Adams has seen her share of bad luck. Her parents were killed when she was young and her first love has totally disregarded her. She left to attend college with the quest of completing her degree and joining the ranks of those searching for a successful career. Then she met her knight riding in on a white horse, Will, or so she thought. Lisette started to question Will's heart when her true feelings for an old friend came to the surface.
Tyson was a close friend of Lisette's. In fact they grew up together – his family took her in after the death of her parents. Tyson's marriage is shaky and he attempts to discuss his issues with Lisette but things didn't work out. A few weeks later he is in a deadly car accident. Lisette isn't certain that he will survive, so she sheds her heart while standing vigil by his hospital bed. Will Lisette be able to ride off into the sunset with her knight after all?
Wathington is a superb storyteller. The character development and vivid emotional details are magnificent. The flashbacks, romantic drama, and love left unspoken cumulate in a page turning romance. Wathington is definitely an author to watch.

It's been awhile since I blogged but I am at a point where if I don't unload all of these thoughts and feelings, I may very well explode! LOL As you probably can tell from my status today, I am extremely and thoroughly irritated at where we are with the presidential election season. It makes one want to quote Rodney King--"Can't we all just get along?"
Of course, life is not simplistic that way and we, with our human nature, will probably never see a day where we all live in one accord. I mean, everything has to be divided in this country--gender, race, religion, political afiliation. Are you right wing, left wing, independent? Are you black or white or another race? Are you blue collar or white collar? Pro-choice or pro-life? The divisions in this country are wide, deep amd long. While some feel time has shortened those divisions, and although we are in the midst of a historical presidential race which may have never taken place over 30 years ago, the truth is still resounding. Those divisions are as wide and deep as ever.
The truth always rises to the surface when this country's citizens real thoughts and feelings are revealed. Although it may not be right, some will vote for McCain simply because Obama is considered black. (Racism) Some will vote for McCain because Palin is on his ticket and is a woman. (Sexism) And some will vote for Obama because they think McCain is too old. (Agism) Or just because Obama is considered black. (I say considered because Obama is actually black and white) A lot of people want to say that won't happen but at the end of the day when November 4th rolls around and each person faces that voting machine, they will fall back on their feelings and what "they know".
This is all extremely sad to me because I believe we are so much better than that. On this somber anniversary, I remember a nation that rallied together to help one another through such a devastating tragedy. Do you think that the people on the planes or trapped inside those buildings that day were thinking "I'm scared but I can't hold her hand because she's a Republican" or "I need help but I'm not going to ask him because he's black?" Is that how we look at them now, as categories and divisions? No, we see them as a whole--a group of people whose lives were cut short unfairly and unjustly. We grieved for them together, we honored them together, we still love them---together.
I am always amazed that people in this country can fight so bitterly over presidential elections but say that they will come together to support whomever we elect. That's what is said, but not what is done. We grumble, complain, stop being politically involved if our candidate does not win. We put blame on others for what has transpired but in reality, we do it to ourselves. Right now, people are blaming the media for being biased but who made the media what it is now? We did. We watch the very shows and media personalities we compain and get mad at. We give them ratings. We make them stars. So, how then, do we have the nerve to get mad at them for doing what we pay them to do? The same goes for our politicians.
I am not naive or unrealistic. I realize that the political system will not change anytime soon. The process of presidential elections will not change and the very climate of politics cannot be altered in any big way anytime soon either. People are going to be who they are and believe what they believe. And everyone has the right to vote whichever way they want. Our ancestors fought and died for the right to vote--every single person, woman, man, black, white, etc.--and all should exercise that right. It just makes me sick at heart to see this country, that has the potential to be so much more, be so fragmented. I pray everyday for the future of our citizens.
I look forward to November 5, 2008. Not to see who will be president but so we may hopefully move forward to the next phase of trying once more to become the US of A we proved we could be back in 2001. Maybe we can find our love for this country and start putting it above our divisions. Hey, one can only hope, right?

Hi guys,
It's been quite awhile since I had my last blog entry and a lot has gone on during that time! While there has been ALOT to say, I have found blogging is not really the way I need to share my thoughts of all that's been going on. As you can see, this MySpace page has undergone a facelift. Hope you like it-- please let me know if it's too hard to read!
Some good news is I have been blessed with several website design jobs so I will be busy with that for a minute and I am going back to my job as a book reviewer for TRRC (under the name Elissa Scott Kyle). TRRC (The Romance Readers Connection) is a great review site that covers all kinds of genres! Check them out when you get a chance.
So, this will probably be my last blog for awhile but I will try to check in when I can. Thanks to all those who subscribed here--I truly appreciate your support!

Current mood: excited
This is shaping up to be an exciting week already and it's only Monday! lol Here is what has me going...
Surrender Your Heart, a short story duet by yours truly is being released by Romance At Heart Publications on Thursday Jan. 10, 2008! For those of you who don't know about it, these two sensual romances are among my favorites.
In Surrender, Monique Wurlin is determined if she works hard enough, maybe she could ignore the warm and crazy feelings that Jordan evokes when he looks at her with his heart in his eyes. She doesn't want to open herself up to possible heartache ever again. Can Jordan break down her barriers and help Monique surrender her heart?
In How Do You Say Good-bye? Jessica Allen is still heartbroken over her split from Alexander Galey, the man she thought was her future. When they come face to face, startling revelations surface. Will they ever see each other the same way again or will they have to say goodbye once and for all to their love?
Then, I found out I am nominated for Short Story 2007 (Other) (it's inspirational) for Double The Blessings and my authors website at the Preditors and Editors Readers Poll for 2007. I am so honored!

Okay, I'm going to try to calm down now....Happy Monday!
