Los Angeles-based singer/ songwriter Nick Daugherty will be performing tracks from his debut album, “Movin’ Higher,” Saturday, May 23, at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach.

The 28-year-old has had quite an unusual musical path. By day, he works as a hi-tech consultant with NASA and by night takes to the stages of Hollywood. Growing up in Louisiana, Daugherty spent his days listening to Green Day and having his father teach him how to play the guitar. Unlike most singer/songwriters who tend to name James Taylor or The Beatles as influences, Daugherty’s are far vaster and touch upon many genres. Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer and Sam Cooke all fall into his list of inspirations; and one of them had a lot to do with his quest for being a musician.

“I heard John Mayer back in 1999 and instantly knew he was something different,” Daugherty said. “He has great guitar chops and can sing at the same time. It just hit me in the forehead and made me realize I needed to be doing that as well.”

After high school, Daugherty enlisted in the military and was stationed in El Segundo.

“I was working on satellites for the military in this vault with no windows or anything,” he said. “It was kind of boring, but was a great experience.”

Eventually, the Air Force came around and was asking for volunteers to leave the service as they had too many people working in his field. Raising his hand, Daugherty was one of the first to opt out and was now able to focus more on his much-desired music career.

This Saturday at The Lighthouse, Daugherty will be giving the South Bay crowd a taste of his debut CD. The album is almost three years in the making and was produced by Mandi Martin, who formerly managed Ray Charles’ publishing company and worked with some of the biggest soul artists of the 1960s and 1970s. The Hermosa Beach show, which opens at 1 p.m., coincides with the release of “Movin” Higher” on iTunes.

“There’s so much diversity on this album,” said Daugherty. “Songs range from sounding like Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson and Otis Redding.”

When he is not performing, Daugherty works for a software company in which he consults quite a bit with NASA and various other companies. The 9-to-5 day job doesn’t seem to be affecting his pursuit of a career in music. Music Connection just named him one of the “Top 100 Unsigned Artists of 2009” and he is playing all around Los Angeles.

Click here to read this entry.Forgive me, father, it has been a long time since my last post…

A few months back, Mandi and I were in the studio, editing tracks for my upcoming EP CD (which I had hoped would be finished, pressed, and mailed out to you by now). Turns out there's a lot more work to do than I ever realized.

"What is an EP," you ask?

Imagine going into a really fancy restaurant you know you can't afford, but immediately as soon as you walk in, you get whisked away by the aroma of prime-cut tenderloin together with garlic and herbs wafting through the air. You get whisked away by the ambience of the dim track lighting, the jazz trio in the corner, and the old photographs on the wall that provide a better history lesson than you could get in a year's worth of Houghton Mifflin text. It's one of those restaurants that's too cool not to stop in and hang out for a while, whatever the price. If it were me, I would promptly sit down and order an appetizer for dinner.

All the fun, half the guilt. That, my friends, is an EP. Mine was going to have six songs.

Anyway, Mandi said something very profound to me that day in the studio. "Nicky, these tracks came out so good! This is going to be huge in Europe and Australia. If only we could release it there."

"Why can't we?" I retorted, briefly taken aback.

"Well, it's very difficult to find distribution for an EP overseas. They usually want to see a full album."

Now for an indie cat (on an indie budget) like me, news like this is bittersweet. I'm so excited about the first six tracks we made together I can't stand it, and here's a chance to make even more music with an incredible group of people that lots of other songwriters only dream about. When opportunity knocks, answer the door, right?

But the no-frills, hard-nosed, business side of me winces to think that for every song we add to the project, we pile on thousands of dollars worth of additional costs for studio time, musicians, editing, mixing, mastering, etc etc etc.

Now I know what Jason Mraz meant when he said, "I have no regrets that I bet my whole checking account because it all amounts to nothing up in the end…"

And Mandi makes a good point — this really is the opportunity of a lifetime for me. And for once in my life I don't mind putting all my eggs in one basket.

(Insert more clichés here to imply going for it.)

So it's back to the drawing… er, writing… board for me. I've got four new songs I'm working on for the CD. Bring me the steak, Pierre! This appetizer just won't do.

Wheatware Guitar PicksI'm really excited to write about this, because I know I'm breaking some major news to many of you. Kids, my music just got a lot more organic.

True, we're only using real instruments with real players on the new CD, but we're using some new organic gear that you really ought to know about.

I just received a sample of guitar picks and drumsticks made from wheat. Can you believe it? Wheat!

For years, people have been telling me that I could help stop global warming by using different light bulbs, but FINALLY, there's a company out there that can truly help reduce our dependency on wood and plastic.

It's called Wheatware-- and it's the real deal.

Wheatware make compostable guitar picks that offer an alternative to the millions of plastic picks manufactured each year -- without sacrificing performance. And the Wheatware drumsticks deliver all the performance advantages of wood, yet are made of a sustainable material that doesn't kill trees.

Here are 5 reasons I'm SO EXCITED to break the news on Wheatware:

  • It reduces our reliance on foreign oil

  • It's renewable. We have an abundant surplus of American wheat every year

  • It reduces our need for wood and trees, saving our forests, which help to cool the planet

  • It's completely natural and non-allergenic

  • It's biodegradable. If you bury Wheatware in the ground, it turns to compost in 90 days

On 07-07-07, while I was playing my 365-day finale concert, Wheatware donated 272 pairs of Wheatware Compostable drumsticks, 3,240 Wheatware Compostable guitar picks, and 4,100 Wheatware Compostable clothes hangers to the Live Earth musicians like John Mayer and Kanye West. Now, just a few months later, they're available to you and me!

You might also check out their other biodegradable products:

  • Forks, knives, and spoons

  • Chopsticks and wasabi dishes

  • Golf tees

  • Clothes hangers

The launch of Wheatware products is part of Wheatware's Great Switch-Out from Wood to Wheat, and I'm happy to say I'm on board. Shouldn't you be too?

UPDATE: I spoke to the folks at Wheatware, and they offered me a special coupon code to get 10% off on your order. Just use the code below when you check out. But hurry, this code won't last forever.

Click here to get 10% off your first order at Wheatware.com

I have been using my new Wheatware guitar picks for about 10 days now, and I've gotta' say, they feel great. Plus, the sound off the strings is not plastic sounding like my regular picks. It sounds more like I'm using my fingers to play than a pick. Overall, I think it is much richer and crisp then the fender picks I usually use.

For pick chewers: if you're like me, you have a habit of chewing on your picks in between playing. I can tell you honestly that these babies really hold up -- no teeth marks. They're even kinda tasty.

I'm not a drummer, but I just read where Josh Redlus from a band called the Beemones, commented:
"The picks had great attack and felt comfortable to hold -- very solid feel. And you got to feel each strike of the sticks on the drums, more so than hickory, kind of like maple sticks I once had and loved. I guess that's sort of a "by-product" of the material, but I see it as a great feature. I definitely endorse them!"

Have you tried any Wheatware products? Did you like them? Leave me a comment and let me know!
Nick Daugherty
