Serenity is a Firefly Class interplanetary ship. Originally conceived and built as a medium range cargo ship. Dimensions and Weights:She is comparable to that of Boeing 747. She is 63 meters long, 40 meters wide and 18 meters tall. Her gross empty weight is 575,000 lbs and her maximum takeoff weight is 945,000 lbs. Performance and Powerplants:Primarily powered by 2 wing mounted Smith & Davis SD-2595 (95,000 lb) turbofan and solar induction engines, she can achieve a maximum airspeed of mach 2 (1484 mph) at 1000 Meters EBSL (Earth Based Sea Level,) and mach 30 (22270 mph) at 100,000 Meters (62 miles) EBSL. During the transitional phase from atmospheric to orbital flight the fan blades rotate to collect photons emitted by a solar source to feed the engines keeping the relative thrust ratio comparable to it's atmospheric rating. The Firefly engine, a Smith & Davis SD-4631 photon reaction drive, was developed on the same principles that drive fusion in a star, (4 1H 2 e --> 4He 2 neutrinos 6 photons.) The reaction produces enough thrust to propel the ship to 643,738 kph (400,000 mph) taking it approximately 16 days to travel 1 AU. (The Astronomical Unit is the distance from the Earth to the Sun, 149,597,871 kilometers.) Although very reliable, this reaction produces large volumes of plasma as hot as the surface of a star. Thermal panels on the outside of the engine dissipate the plasma and heat that builds up during the process typically glowing in a yellowish hue as they cool down. Handling:The maneuvering of the ship is handled in two different ways. In atmosphere she has flaps and ailerons that in conjunction with the pitch of the side engines control her direction. In space she uses an RCS, (Reaction Control System,) consisting of Hydrazine fueled thrusters that work in a countered measure. For example if she were to turn nose up, thrusters on the back rear of the ship would fire upwards and thrusters of the front nose would fire downwards pushing the tail down and the nose up. Variations on this, tied into the side engines pitch, produce all her movement in space. For landing her side engines rotate vertical and vents on the front of the engine open to allow the engine the breathe as she hovers.
Gravity:The Firefly class ships gravity comes from a rotating ring just aft of the ships midsection. It produces a gravity field using the "Peristere Principal," that also acts as an momentum dampener to allow passengers more freedom of movement during all aspects of flight.

Written by Joss Whedon for TVGuide issue for Dec 26th week of 2005.
------------------------------------------------
Many people have asked me, "Joss, what is the future of television? What will we watch? And how will we watch it? Surely you must know, for you are wise, and slender." I usually smile and say nothing, because I wasn't actually listening to the question. But it's a good one, and I think it's time I let you in on a few highlights of Television-to-Be.
The networks will all be creating exciting, innovative new spin-offs of today's shows. Approximately 67 percent of all television will be CSI-based, including CSI: Des Moines, CSI: New York but a Different Part than Gary Sinise Is In and NCSI: SVU WKRP, which covers every possible gruesome crime with a groovin' '70s beat. (Jerry Bruckheimer will also have conquered Broadway with the CSI musical "FOLLICLE!" starring Nathan Lane as a frenetic but lovable blood spatter and Matthew Broderick as lint.)
Lost has that one-of-a-kind alchemy that really can't be copied. Therefore, look for the original series Misplaced, as well as Unfound, Not So Much with the Whereabouts and Just Pull Over and Ask!
In a stunningly cost-effective move, CBS will air How I Met Your Biological Mother, That Bitch, which is just old episodes of How I Met Your Mother with snarkier narration. HBO's Westminster will continue the trend pioneered by Deadwood and Rome by making 19th-century England really dirty and weird, like Jane Austen with Tourette's. (Actually, I can't wait for that one.) Also, the constant slew of cable mergers will result in the creation of CinePax, a channel that's just very confused about its morals.
Every year another film actress gets "too old" for film leads and finds a (sometimes much better) home on TV. This trend will continue a few years hence when the aging but feisty Dakota Fanning headlines CSI: Vancouver Made to Look Like Chicago.
Obviously, we'll see advances in technology. TiVo, iPods, streaming video the way we watch TV is changing dramatically. It's on our phones, in our cars even projected on specialized eyeglasses. But don't listen to the talk about having shows beamed directly into your brain. That's science-fiction nonsense. Shows will be stored in the pancreas and will enter the brain through the bloodstream after being downloaded into your iHole.
And what of me? My short-lived series Firefly was the basis for the epic action film Serenity (now available on DVD! I have little or no shame), and the future will see even more incarnations of this visionary work, as it returns to TV as Serenity: The Firefly Years, then back to film as Firefly: Serenity's Sequel, back to TV as SereniFly, and finally end as the direct-to-eyeglasses series Choose a Damn Name Already. I promise it'll be as heartwarming and exciting as the original Serenity, now available on DVD. (Explain again this thing you call shame....)
That's all I can tell you, except for one last thing: Veronica Mars will still be on. Veronica Mars will still be on. We clear about that?
Bye-ee!

Ahh! Spider! Spider! No wait. Lint. Ahh! Lint! Malevolent lint! Oookay, where was I? Um, time of sadness... transition... live forever in our hearts.... Sorry, I want this post to be really special, I'm just going through my notes. Be with you guys in a sec. Ahhh... done the improbable... joke about dolphins... majestic DVD art... OH! Hey! Here we go: Thanks a bunch. Cool. I thought that went well. Some sentiment, but not maudlin... quality post. The one to go out on, if nobody notices my irrational fear of lint. I think the Browncoats will gain strength from my timely message, or from working out regularly. Anyway, my heart will go on. My liver's a house of cards, though, I kid you not. Callous? Who said that? Maybe you're callous, mister TROLL! I'm not callous. I got the same feeling when I heard the board was closing down as every one else. But I'm old. Really, really old. Like, Keanu Reeves Old. (God, he's well preserved.) So I've seen this before. The Bronze. The Angelix. The Portly Norwegian Bondage House. All come and gone. What remains? Only two things. The first is Homestar Runner. Go Homestar! Teen Girl Squad! Let's get ready to look SOO GOOD! The second, guess what, is love. No flying lessons, don't worry, but what we get from the shows, the films, and the time on these boards -- from each other -- just can't get shut down. You guys gave me so much hope and support... and I gave you a movie so, you know, advantage me. But still. What this place was is sweet, what it will always be is treasured. I got props for the Uni's for putting this up -- oh, and for making my damn (excuse me, BIG damn) movie. All things must pass. We'll find each other again, especially if any of you are portly, Norwegian and 'open-minded'. I'll do my best to tell stories that cause as much trouble as this one did. And if I ever get the chance to return to this one... in case it was ever unclear due to shoddy journalism, sign me right the hell up. You guys are the best crew flying. Thanks a bunch. -j.

From Nathan Fillion taken from the Official Browncoats Message Boards--------------- So, here we are. So much has happened recently and I feel this is the time to pause and reflect before the New Year starts slapping us around. We made the movie, it has come out on DVD just in time for that odd little Christian holiday where they celebrate not being fed to lions or something. It is number one on Amazon, and the old Firefly set is crawling back up the charts like a thirsty man in the desert towards a mirage. Does this make us better than anyone else? You bet it does. But it's not the kind of better than that causes you to look down your nose at anyone. It's more the kind that lets you pat someone patiently on the arm and say in a sanctimonious tone, "Mm hm, it's alright. I'll get you a copy of the movie and you can be cool, too. Just not quite as cool as me because I've been a Browncoat for sometime, now." If you are like me, you watch the movie to assure yourself the future will be safe, you watch the extras to see old friends, and you listen to Joss' commentary and shed a little tear over good times. Waht's that? You don't cry in the commentary? Well, just have an emotion chip installed, you robot, and refill your eye bags with saline. Be well, Browncoats. Aim high, as we have all learned that nothing is impossible (except getting Jewel and Morena to stop fighting over who is prettier when we all know it's me). Happy Holidays. Nathan "Captain Tightpants" Fillion

IGN's Sci-Fi Brain continues it's week-long coverage of Serenity with an interview with Adam Baldwin, the man they call Jayne. The previous interviews with Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, Christina Hendricks, and Ron Glass are here and here. SAMPLE:During my recent interview with members of the cast of Serenity (released on DVD December 20th), I was listening to Nathan Fillions dream cast for a Mel Brooks spoof, when he turned and asked fellow co-star, Adam Baldwin, Who would play Jayne in a Mel Brooks version of a spoof of Firefly?

IGN's Sci-Fi Brain continues it's week-long coverage of Serenity DVD release with an interview with Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds). O Captain! My Captain!SAMPLE:When I approach Nathan Fillion to initiate my interview, he pulls out the chair beside him, and pats the seat for me to sit down. This is just the kind of person that he is friendly, personable, and more than likely able to talk to anyone about anything for any length of time. His effortless smile put me instantly at ease, and I immediately learn that, apparently, no one is safe from his predilection to tease, be they cast member or complete stranger. When I shamefully admit that I hadnt succumbed to the mighty power of Firefly until this past year, he abruptly turns his back on me to end the conversation. I pout at his rejection, and promise that I would buy plenty of the Serenity DVDs to make up for it. What do you want? Nathan asks in feigned seriousness. Do you want forgiveness? I meekly answer in the affirmative. He lays his hands on my head and announces, I forgive you.

From the Official Browncoats Forum. - Registration Required ------------------------------- Yes, gentle viewers (and rough, burly viewers) (and viewers who are mostly gentle and kind and then one day WHAM! homicidal rage), it's officially 'SERENITY comes out on DVD' day. Last night as we slept, Santa rode around in his sleigh and delivered shiny, odd-looking DVD's to all the good video stores (The naughty video stores got [insert movie you hate to complete witticism]). Everyone's buying copies, the Whos down in Whoville are all joining hands and singing, the President has declared a National Holiday for himelf lasting four months (again) and all is right with the world except for war and famine and stuff like that. But let's not dwell. What I'm excited about isn't just that fans get their copies, or that the people who decided to wait till vid will pick it up. What I'm excited about is someone who has no idea what SERENITY is getting so bored they decide to give it a shot. When I worked in a video store centuries ago, my favorite moment ever was seeing a young girl watching the monitor where we'd thrown up "Holy Grail" and pulling at her mom's sleeve laughing, saying "Look, mommy, they're using coconuts!" Ahh, the classics. All I can do is hope the stores display our little film proudly, and that we manage, in our own small way, to sell five hundred billion copies in the first twelve minutes. Reach for the stars, kids. Barring that, I hope that some day a small child will be tugging on a sleeve and saying "Look, Mommy, the intransigent moral rectitude of the antagonist's world view renders him humble to the point of arrogance!" Kids are so cute. Well, no news to give you; just wanted to take a moment to be with my peeps on this auspicious day. Have fun. You've earned it. Most of you. some of you are just cruising by on other people's hard funwork. You think I don't know!?! But let's not dwell. Smooches, -joss.

IGN's Sci-Fi Brain interviews Wash (Alan Tudyk), Book (Ron Glass), and Saffron (Christina Hendricks) in their hopes for the DVD release. Sample: If there was one sense you get from talking to members of the cast of Serenity, its one of hope. While the film may not have performed as well at the box office as the cast and their fans would have liked, that doesnt necessarily mean that anyone has given up. This coming Tuesday, December 20th, Serenity will be released on DVD, and Universal pictures has stated that they will be keeping a close eye on the numbers. Should the DVD sell as anticipated, the prospect for a sequel to Serenity is a good one. Read More...
